Product Description

James Hogg'sJacobite Relics--originally commissioned by the Highland Society of London in 1817--is an important addition toThe Collected Works of James Hogg. It created a canon for the Jacobite song which had an enormous influence on subsequent collections, and was of great importance in defining the relationship between the Scottish song tradition and its Romantic editors and collectors. From the first publication of the Relics in 1819, there has been speculation about how many of them were authored or at least substantially altered by Hogg. Murray Pittock has conducted extensive research in this area since 1987, and has identified several previously unknown sources from which Hogg would have worked as he developed his collection. The introduction to volume one includes the crucial issue of Hogg's relationship to the Jacobite song tradition, and the place of the Relics within Hogg's career and personal context, facilitating further interpretations of Hogg's range of creative strategies. Both volumes one and two provide considerable annotation to accurately communicate the context of the songs and Hogg's relationship to the textuality of Jacobite culture. Volume one also includes a bibliography and glossary. The introduction to volume two deals with the genesis of the text and Hogg's relationship with the Highland Society.

THE following speeches were delivered on the occasion of the unveiling of the Memorial erected to commemorate the birthplace of JAMES HOGG, the Ettrick Shepherd. The brief sketch of his life is appended mainly for the benefit of those who may not have had an opportunity of reading Thomsons Life of the Poet, or Mrs Gardens Memorials of her Father. The publisher acknowledges his indebtedness to George Lewis Co. for the excellent report of the proceedings published in the Southern Reporter, and to Nicholas Dickson, Esq., editor of the Border Magazine, for some of the illustrations. It may be interesting to note that the chair occupied by Lord Napier on the occasion of the unveiling of the monument was one of the Ettrick Shepherds, and was lent by Mr Thomos Amos, Yarrow, whose mother was for a number of years a servant of HOGG. THERE are few names in Scottish literary history better known than that of James Hogg, the Ettrick Shepherd. It is almost a hundred years ago since his first song, Donald Macdonald, was given to the world but the lapse of time has neither lessened the public interest in the man, nor seriously diminished the reputation of the poet. Hence the erection of a Monument, by the Edinburgh Border Counties Association, to commemorate the site of his birthplace, and which was unveiled by Lord Napier and Ettrick on the 28th July, has evoked considerable interest and enthusiasm among all classes of the community. xis Birth. James Hogg was born at Ettrickhall, in the parish of Ettrick, in the year 1770. Unfortunately, it is impossible to fix the exact date of his birth. There was no Registration Act in those days, and birthdays in the case of ordinary mortals were seldom celebrated, so that it is hardly surprising that our poet, when he began to interest himself in the matter, should have had some difficulty in knowing when he first saw the light. He was wont to affirm that he was born on the 25th of January, 1772. He may have been right as to the day and the month, but he was almost certainly wrong as to the year. In the Kirk Session Records of Ettrick his baptism is recorded as having taken place on the 9th December, 1770. But if he was born in January, it does seem strange that he was not baptised till the following December. His fathers house was within a few yards of the Manse, so that even if he had been a very delicate child - of which there is no evidence-there was no reason for his baptism being so long delayed. It has been surmised that Hogg fixed on the 25th January as his natal day, because he had the ambition of becoming the successor of Burns, and perhaps thought that to be born on the same day was a favourable augury. There may not be much in the suggestion, though it is by no means incredible. Hoggs father was a shepherd, but shortly befork the birth of his distinguished son he leased the farm of Ettrickhall-a venture which unfortunately proved disastrous from a financial point of view. His ancestry, however, was by -no means common-place... ... Read more

Product Description
JAMES HOGG - NOTE - The scheme of the Series necessitates the inclusion, in one volume with this sketch of Hoggs life, of brief notices of the minor and more or less contemporary poets, Robert Tannahill, William Motherwell, and William Thorn. JAMES HOGG - INTRODUCTION - IF there have been many greater poets than the Ettrick Shepherd, there have probably been few more closely associated with a particular district of the earths surface, more racy of the soil from which they sprung. Herein, perhaps, lie Hoggs limitations for, of course, he is local rather than universal, the poet of a class rather than of humanity, of an epoch rather than of the ages. But, accepting these limitations, herein also lies his strength. For there are few instances of the poetry of a particular people and locality being so completely incarnated in one man, and through him passing so directly into literature. Indeed, so essential is the connexion, that a glance at the locality in question, and at its condition a century ago, is indispensable ere we proceed to bring the poet himself upon the stage. The shire of Selkirk, anciently known as Ettrick Forest, the Arcadia of Scotland and the hunting-ground of Scottish kings, is described by the gazetteer as forming part of the eastern declivity of that lofty ridge of mountains which from Northumberland penetrates northward into Clydesdale. Its surface is but little diversified, appearing, indeed, to the spectator, now that the ancient wood has been removed, but as one assemblage of hills. It is watered by two principal streams, which, flowing in a north-easterly direction and for some distance almost in parallel lines, unite to empty their waters into Tweed. These rivers are the Ettrick and that most tunefully besung of rivulets, the Yarrow. The hills are generally rounded in outline and grassy but at certain points-as on Min hmuir, or at the pass into Moffatdale-they become more rugged and barren, displaying lines which are more striking to the eye and grander. At Ettrick Peli and Blackhouse Heights they rise respectively to 2200 and 2370 feet above sea level. Excepting Selkirk and Galashiels on the eastern limit of the county, there are no towns whilst the villages, few and scattered, might be more accurately described as hamlets... ... Read more
