Chapters: University of New Zealand Alumni, Peter Hogg, Raoul Franklin, Herbert William Williams, Leslie Albert Knight, Charles Elliot Fox, Norman Alexander, Maurice John Goodall. Excerpt: The University of New Zealand was the New Zealand university from 1870 to 1961. It was the sole New Zealand university, having a federal structure embracing several constituent colleges at various locations around New Zealand. By the time it was dissolved into four independent universities and two associated agricultural colleges in 1961, it comprised the University of Otago (Dunedin), University of Canterbury (Christchurch), University of Auckland, Victoria University of Wellington, Canterbury Agricultural College (Lincoln) and Massey Agricultural College (Palmerston North). The University of New Zealand Act set up the University in 1870. The University of Otago negotiated to keep its title of "university" when it joined the University of New Zealand in 1874, however, it agreed to award degrees of the University of New Zealand. The colleges in Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington were known as "university colleges" rather than "universities" throughout most of the history of the University of New Zealand, ie Canterbury University College, Auckland University College and Victoria University College. The Universities Act of 1961 dissolved the university and granted degree-conferring powers to the constituent Colleges. The New Zealand Vice-Chancellors' Committee assumed certain administrative functions exercised by the University Grants Committee which in turn assumed some functions of the University of New Zealand on its demise. The University used to set its own entrance examination and also used to award scholarships to financially assist study. When the universit... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=426231 ... Read more

At first glance this is a witty and comical collection of poems. But the eccentric nature of many of the poems nevertheless belies the often serious historical and moral issues contained within. As close to Hogg's final copy as possible, this collection includes many poems which have never been studied critically before. "The 1994Queer Book is much more than a reprint of the 1832 text... Hogg boasted to William Blackwood 'it will be a grand book for thae Englishers for they winna understand a word of it'."Journal of James Hogg Society

1-0 out of 5 stars A little book of horrors.
There are none so blind as those who do not want to see, or so deaf as those who do not want to hear. In this kingdom of the blind, not even the one-eyed man is king. How can anyone reason with understanding with such a state of mind? How can anyone, with such a state of mind, not be afraid of the truth?

As can be expected, the authors have been indoctrinated by their training in newspaper journalism, which trains them to be strangers of the truth unless it suits them. To sell their story, they have to be purveyors of the untruth to convince readers. In typical newspaper journalistic style, the book purports (on its front cover) to provide a full exposé. What one can find on the inside is sensationally sleazy journalism, which has selectively chosen to quote from individuals who have and had forgotten why they chose to follow the teachings of the S·E·S in the first place. I could have given the book an extra star rating for the satirical amusement it provided me. I was amused by the misunderstanding the authors and their informants have of the real purpose for which the S·E·S was established.

As the main thrust for the "full exposé", it describes broken marriages having been the result of one partner in such relationships following the "Truth". However, the survival of a marriage depends on two people, each with their own original intent (implicit or explicit desires) for agreeing to form their relationship in the first place. For example, if the one member of the relationship primarily wanted the relationship for sex, and the other for children, then when Nature has taken its course over time, there would possibly have to be new intentions of mutual interest for the marriage relationship to survive. When the one member has satisfied his or her desire to have children, and the children have eventually fled the nest, then the main purpose for the relationship for the one person has taken its course. As is often the case for either gender, "the golden egg" is more important than "the goose that lays it".

Misconstruction of the truth and the facts permeates the book. It states that the S·E·S is the latest in a long line of esoteric schools, and that it is a Hindu-based cult, with "dopey civilians" working slavishly on back-breaking tasks, etc, etc, - all of which are sound-bytes to convince readers that the S·E·S is a "House of Freaks". The authors have used the word "cult" throughout the book with hysterical frequency.

The authors would have done the human race a far greater service if they developed the skills needed to expose the murderous consequences of religious fanatism throughout the history of religions that are reflected in churches that are still in existence today. The vicars, bishops, and deans mentioned in the book, who have cast the first stone that Christ spoke of, forget that their followers depend on them being able to convince their flock of the virtuous Unknown (Call Him or Her by whatever name you will)

Some elements in the book reflect the facts about the S·E·S, but they have been rather spoilt by the authors' mission to convince readers of their own beliefs at whatever cost to the truth(s). Up until at least the passing away of its main founder, the S·E·S has failed to show relevance, in practice, of its philosophical teaching to the excellent (though incomplete) economics teaching it provides. There is also the misconstrued handling of the sexual energy (that exists in all humans) that the authors bring to the attention of readers (A wise teaching is needed for all humans in this regard). And there is the inevitable tendency for at least some egos to develop in some individuals who, in their human frailty, become attached to power. The Work of the S·E·S is not easy, even for those at the top. A reversal of rôles for long periods (in years) is needed for reminding the victims of such attachment of what it is like to start at the beginning (- this should help break some bad habits)

I've begun to realise that criticism (positive or negative) provides an opportunity for new information, and I believe the book would be best read by all long-established members of the S·E·S: It would provide them with an opportunity for analytic reflection and debate on the real and apparent substance of the S·E·S teachings as claimed by its authors (of the book and the teachings). It is said that the truth can set one free, so there should be no fear in facing up to it. The S·E·S is one of many "torchbearers" for guiding seekers of the Truth, and it is entering a new era that would need it to be relevant for the human race and its fellow creatures. We, as a human race, have not yet become guardians of this planet and its life. Time is almost running out, so forgo the belief in rebirth of a life that may never be. The proof is in the Present.

"Love! Love! To what great dangers a loving heart allures its object! Love is a naked sword which, if injudiciously employed, can do untold harm ..." (- from "The Heart of the Eastern Mystical Teaching" - ISBN: 0854240306) ... Read more

Product Description
For several years, the armies of Napoleon III deployed some 450 Muslim Sudanese slave soldiers in Veracruz, the port of Mexico City. As in the other case of Western hemisphere military slavery (the West India Regiments, a British unit in existence 1795-1815), the Sudanese were imported from Africa in the hopes that they would better survive the tropical diseases that so terribly afflicted European soldiers. In both cases, the Africans did indeed fulfill these expectations.

The mixture of cultures embodied by this event has piqued the interest of several historians, so it is by no means unknown. Hill and Hogg provide a particularly thorough, if unimaginative, account of this exotic interlude, explaining its background, looking in detail at the battle record in Mexico, and figuring out who exactly made up the battalion. Much in their account is odd and interesting, for example, the Sudanese superiority to Austrian troops and their festive nine-day spree in Paris on the emperor's tab. The authors also assess the episode's longer-term impact on the Sudan, showing that the veterans of Mexico, having learned much from their extended exposure to French military practices, rose quickly in the ranks, then taught these methods to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars A life-time accomplishment by two world-class experts.
Two great experts on the history of the Sudan coordinated a fine study of the only time a force of regular African troops were deployed to the New World.Taking place during the French intervention in Mexico, this is the story of a battalion of Sudanese infantry who fought against Juarez and his Mexican patriots.

Hill and Hogg start off with a look at the Sudan during the first half of the 19th century. Then part of an Egyptian empire, they explain why these soldiers would be sent to Mexico, and how this impacted on Egypt's foreign relations.

The work covers a wide range of topics, ranging from recruitment, training, deployment, and combat. Also nice is a look at how the surviviors played important roles in the failing Egyptian empire of the 1870s-80s.

American, French, Egyptian, and Sudanese sources are employed. An interesting work that will proabaly never be surpased.Sadly, it was Richard Hill's last book. ... Read more
