Product Description
This revised and updated edition of Franco Marucci's "I fogli della Sibilla: Retorica e medievalismo in Gerard Manley Hopkins" (1981) was conceived and written in the wake of two innovative and seminal approaches to the literary text that came into prominence during the 1970s. The first is that of the "new rhetoric," which superseded the old-fashioned taxonomic methods of description, and put forward the possibility of a functional integration of rhetoric within the complexity of the literary text. The second approach is that of cultural typology, as carried out by the Tartu school and its most oustanding exponent, Jurij Lotman. Translated into English from the original Italian by the author, "The Fine Delight that Fathers Thought", however, is anything but a deliberate adaptation of the text to theory. Divided into two distinct sections, Marucci's work addresses in the first section several interpretive issues where there is still a marked critical disagreement: specifically, the statute and the function of the artifice.Marucci does not investigate Hopkins's rhetoric - which has long been dismissed as a series of empty devices or, worse still, censured as a vice - from a subjective viewpoint. He instead places Hopkins's work within the semiotic context and interprets its rhetoric according to the communicative exigencies and finalities that support and justify its uses. In the second section, Marucci argues, against the prevailing critical view, that Hopkins gradually deactivated his received cultural codes and from his conversion onward replaced them with code options (behavioural, signic, ethical, theological, political, and, above all, aesthetic) of a distinct and unmistakable medieval character. Marucci uses Hopkins's letters, diaries, essays, sermons, spiritual and theological writings, and "The Wreck of the Deutschland", the linchpin of all Hopking's work, to combine theory and text in a volume that may be relevant reading for Hopkins students and scholars, as well as for those who are interested in medieval studies and rhetoric. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Caged Sky
I am a sort of Caged Sky looking for the blue yonder. Maria Lichtmann book is a real gem.Graced story of Gerard Manley Hopkin's poetry given new life. One of GMH poems is a favorite of mine. Naturally Maria's insight opens for me a wonderfull way to express pray. "The Caged Skylark" is so apt for a man like me "Man's spirit will be flesh-bound, when found at best,But uncumbered:meadow-down is not distressed...(I am quite elderly)...."GMH.Thanks again from teacher Maria Lichtmann poetry as prayer. tony short.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quiet, deep and helpful
I love the poetry of Hopkins but nevertheless find each poem requires hard work before I can really enter into it. This book helped me appreciate the poems and use them in prayer. ... Read more

Product Description
Renowned Hopkins expert Joseph J. Feeney, S.J., offers a fresh take on Gerard Manley Hopkins which shakes our understanding of his poetry and his life and points towards the next phase in Hopkins studies. While affirming the received view of Hopkins as a major poet of nature, religion, and psychology, Feeney finds a pervasive, rarely noticed playfulness by employing both the theory of play and close reading of his texts. This new Hopkins lived a playful life from childhood till death as a student who loved puns and jokes and wrote parodies, comic verse, and satires; as a Jesuit who played and organized games and had 'a gift for mimicry'; and most significantly, as a poet and prose stylist who rewards readers with unexpected displays of whimsy and incongruity, even, strikingly, in "The Wreck of the Deutschland", "The Windhover", and the "Terrible Sonnets".Feeney convincingly argues that Hopkins's distinctive playfulness is inextricably bound to his sense of fun, his creativity, his style, and his competitiveness with other poets. In unexpected images, quirky metaphors, strange perspectives, puns, coinages, twisted syntax, wordmusic, and sprung rhythm, we see his playful streak burst forth to adorn those works critics consider his most brilliant. No one who absorbs this book's radical readings will ever see and hear Hopkins's poetry and prose quite the way they used to. ... Read more

Product Description

The most striking characteristic of Hopkins's poems is the language: the unusual and confusing diction and series of adjectives, verbs, and nouns. His imagery can be simple, as in Heaven-Haven, where the comparison is between a nun entering a convent and a ship entering a harbour out of a storm. It can be splendidly metaphysical and intricate, as it is in As Kingfishers Catch Fire, where he leaps from one image to another to show how each thing expresses its own uniqueness, and how divinity reflects itself through all of them.
