Product Description
Gold Dust on His Shirt is an evocative telling of the experience of a Scandinavian immigrant family of hard-rock miners at the turn of the century and up to World War II. Based on fascinating historical research, these are tales of arriving in ‘Amerika,’ blasting the Grand Trunk Pacific railway, work in the mines, and domestic life and labour struggles in company towns throughout British Columbia.

Part family history, part economic and social history, Gold Dust on His Shirt is an intriguing look at life on the industrial frontier, the world of immigrant workers and the rise of unions such as the Wobblies. This remarkable and provocative tale of a family, region and era references a number of broader social and political issues.

Born in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, to Scandinavian parents, Irene Howard has devoted her writing career to combining her interest in labour and immigrant history with her love of literature. She has been an English instructor and has broadcast talks for the CBC and written articles and essays for Canadian magazines and journals. She is the author of several books, including The Struggle for Social Justice in British Columbia: Helena Gutteridge, the Unknown Reformer, which in 1993 won the University of British Columbia Silver Medal for Canadian Biography and was shortlisted for a City of Vancouver Book Award and the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize. ... Product Description
When Helena Gutteridge died in 1960, she left behind a legacy of social and political reform. She was born into a working-class family in England where, as a young woman, she was involved in the militant struggle for votes for women. When she arrived in British Columbia in 1911, she quickly became a champion for the rights of women and workers. In this book, Irene Howard chronicles Gutteridge's life and struggles for these causes - for women's suffrage, for jobs for the unemployed and union recognition, for the minimum wage, and for low-cost housing. Following a term on Vancouver's City Council - she was in 1937 the first woman to be elected to Council - she worked in a Japanese internment camp. She continued to work for several left-wing and women's causes until her death at the age of 81. As was typical for a woman of her class and time, Helena Gutteridge did not keep personal records, nor did organizational records exist to any extent. ... Read more

Janzen has been a leading figure on issues of health, illness, and healing in Southern and Central Africa since the 1960s and has dedicated much of his career to providing a better understanding of African society. Janzens knowledge of the Kikongo language and his intermittent visits to the lower Congo region between 1964 and 1982 have paved the way for a contextual understanding of the roots of Western Equatorial African approaches to sickness and healing, combining African and Western derived biomedical therapies. While his fieldwork in the lower Congo region has been very important in shaping him as an anthropologist, Janzens research has expanded to include other African countries such as Rwanda, Burundi, Senegal, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, and Sudan, among many others. His work over the years has provided society as a whole with a comprehensive and holistic approach to health and healing, and has led to award winning publications, which have gained international attention. Along with his research on African society, Janzen has been conducting research on Mennonite society and culture, and is an active member of the Ka...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=13578968 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great handbook for any PE teacher
We were required to buy this book in college as part of the Health and Exercise Science department requirement. At the time I thought the price was a little steep but when you look at the information in the book you realize that it is "one of those books you will use forever".I have the 8th edition so I do not know what has been updated but I do see that it was first published in 1951..It covers 26 sports/activities.It is worth the investment, especially when you need to know the exact dimensions of a tennis court....
