Product Description

A fabulous lost Amazon city once inhabited by women warriors and containing a rare red diamond: it sounded like myth, but archeologist Jillian Sherwood believed it was real, and she was willing to put up with anything to find it -- even Ben Lewis. Ruffian, knock-about, and number one river guide in Brazil, Ben was all man -- over six feet of rock-hard muscles that rippled under his khakis, with lazy blue eyes that taunted her from his tanned face. Jillian watched him come to a fast boil when she refused to reveal their exact destination upriver in the uncharted rain forests -- and resolved to stand her ground. Neither of them could foresee what the days ahead promised: an odyssey into the fiery heart of passion and betrayal, and a danger that would force them to cast their fates together, immersed in the eternal, unsolved mysteries of love.... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A SUPER-RARE 5 STAR---
Out of 29 Audible audio books, this is the one I enjoyed the most. The narrator had a small s-lisp that occurred occasionally and surprised me out of the story now-and-then, but it was nothing like her nerve-racking performance of Nora Robert's THE SEARCH. The story itself was extremely entertaining, the characters were very likable, and the romance was believable. I actually listened to this one twice.

5-0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I felt like I was THERE on that adventure...I was actually rooting for him to FINALLY get the girl! hahahaAt first I thought all that sexual build-up would lead to some pretty steamy stuff..but it wasn't what I expected. (Not that it wasn't good) HOWEVER...after I was done reading the book I realized something :)The way LH decided to do the love scenes made it more about exactly THAT!!.. Love! The book had had plenty of mindless sex talk, or thoughts, and so it was good that the love making was more love-LY if you know what I mean:) I ended up ADORING this story!!!!! Funny thing is, I wouldn't think of sitting and watching a movie of this! I hate TV :/ I am fairly new to reading books. (cheeks getting red of embarrassment)But after discovering Linda Howard...I'm OBSESSED now!! I panic just thinking about who to read next when I'm done with all of LH's books!! :( Any ideas??? Hmm, I WOULD watch the movie now though if it were based on Lillian and Ben!hehe

5-0 out of 5 stars Great adventure, great chemistry
This book was a lot of fun.Very funny, great chemistry between characters, with just enough suspense to keep a good pace. Most people liken it to Romancing the Stone and it is very similar.

Jillian Sherwood is an archeologist who embarks on a mission to find a lost city in the Amazon when she finds her career is failing, thanks to her father who believed the city existed and died trying to find it himself.Everyone else thought he was a quack, but she knows her fathers research was true and she knows the city is there somewhere and to clear her name as well as her fathers, she goes to drastic measures to see it through. To fund the expedition, she must partner with her half brother who has always hated her and his partner a complete thug.Jillian goes into the expedition with her eyes wide open knowing that they're in it to find treasure and will likely do her harm once they get what they want, but she's willing to take the risk.
When they get to South America, they hire Ben, a guide, who can navigate them up river and keep them as safe as possible through the unknown of the jungle. Ben is an absolutely hysterical single minded sex obsessed character who clashes wills with Jillian from the get go.In the beginning they each underestimate the other, but quickly learn that they're both strong, intelligent personalities that the other can respect.
As they begin their journey, they quickly team up knowing that if there's a treasure to be found, both of their lives could be in danger.Through their partnership, they bond very quickly and depend on one another.Jillian, who's very attracted to Ben, insists nothing sexual is going to happen between them and this drives Ben absolutely crazy. The dialogue and actions throughout are funny, witty, and very sexy.I absolutely love these two together.
The book overall is very predictable, but romance usually is.You're certainly not disappointed in reading how these two find their happily ever after.

4-0 out of 5 stars HEART OF FIRE
A GOOD READ.FAST MOVING AND GOOD STORY.WANTED LINDA ROBERTS BUT PURCHASED HOWARD BY MISTAKE.GLAD I DID BECAUSE I ENJOYED THIS BOOK.WILL PURCHASE MORE.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Iffy On This One!
I just don't feel that this was one of Linda Howard's best works. It was a bit too predictable for me. Dutra was described as what one would perceive a villain to be described, especially with his spiky teeth.Rick, Jillian's brother was also a predictable character. He acted too much like a spoiled brat and obviously jillian didn't feel too bad about his death because she slept with Ben right on the same day that he died. Also, if Kates was such a shady character why didn't Jillian question him in the beginning regarding his reasons for funding the search.I just found myself questioning too many things with this book.I hope her other books are better. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite novels
I can remember first picking up this book years ago. I loved every page & it made me start to read more books by Linda Howard. I would recommend this book to readers who love classic pieces. This book is filled with lots of poignancy & beauty. Enjoy!

3-0 out of 5 stars Dislike the characters, but love the book?
Right from the start there is nothing to like about Rome, the hero.He is arrogant, abusive, self centered and posessive.Sarah, the heroine, fares a bit better in the beginning but quickly becomes a snivelling bundle of need and never manages to stick up for herself. There is truly not much to like about either one of these characters.I give it three stars because Linda Howard knows how to write a story like few others. In spite of the fact that she has two characters with ugly flaws the story kept me riveted and I could not put it down. These two are sexually obsessive about each other which makes for some steamy love scenes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sarah's Child was her husband!
Linda Howard writes such great strong, virile male characters, but this one (Rome) might have been just a little bit too selfish.Yes, he had suffered the loss of his wife and 2 small sons, but he certainly didn't have much trouble replacing his wife with Sarah. But, when Sarah gets pregnant, he wants her to have an abortion, and barring that, to keep the inconvenient baby away from him.She went through her whole pregnancy alone, without any support from him, and after the baby was born, he couldn't be bothered to acknowledge the child.

Still, I liked the story because obviously he was going to come around, and I liked how Rome and Sarah fell in love and became so important to each other.I can see many would be put off by Rome's selfishness, though.

All in all, I liked it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sarah's Child
Love this book, so well written and very sensative characters. The introduction of a rival for sarah's affection is carried into another book which is really great.
Ive many of Howard's books and have yet to read one I didn't get fully engrossed in.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ick!
There are no words to describe how terrible this book is.I guess the redeeming quality is that it certainly illicited emotions in me.They ranged from disgust to the total ick factor.

Sarah Harper has loved Rome Matthews since the day she met him.Unfortunatly for Sarah, Rome fell in love and married Sarah's best friend Diana.Happily married for 8 years with two sons, Rome's life is torn apart when his wife and his two boys are killed by a drunk driver. Two years after their deaths, Rome is finally cleaning out the house and calls Sarah over to collect any momentoes before he donates everything to the Salvation Army.Grief stricken and still coping with their deaths, Rome has always been attracted to Sarah even though he never acted on it.He's mesmerized by Sarah's cool reserve, not realizing that cool reserve was a self defense mechanism to protect herself from the unbearable situation she found herself in.Rome's attraction turns to pure obsession and he finds he has to have Sarah, taking her viriginity that she's been saving for him for 32 years!!!He knows he can't treat the situation lightly and convinces himself that Diana would approve and proposes marriage.Sarah knows he doesn't love her but she can't bare to sit back and watch him take another wife and settles for what she can get with him hoping that he may eventually fall in love with her. Before they're married, Rome tells Sarah he won't have any more children, shattering Sarah's dreams of a husband, children and love. When Sarah comes down with a terrible flu, she's too sick and doesn't take her birth control.Shortly thereafter, she becomes pregnant and Rome is enraged insisting she abort the chid.Sarah refuses and tells Rome she loves him but won't make that sacrifice.Rome agrees to her keeping the child but he won't have anything to do with it.

I know that we're supposed to believe that Sarah's patience and love are unconditional and she slowly brings Rome back to life, but I simply couldn't buy into it.I felt nothing but disgust for both Rome and Sarah.Rome for verbally abusing Sarah and denying his child for months!! Sarah birthed their baby alone and he didn't even meet the baby for three months even though they were all living in the same apartment.... I mean come on!Even worse was Sarah's heinous sense of self worth.Who would put up with a loveless, abusive denial of one's happiness?Rome left her bed every night after having sex with her (a contrived misunderstanding, man I hate those), he compared her to his dead wife, and he told her to get an abortion, nevermind that he didn't support her during her pregnancy, was absent for the birth, and refused to even look at his daughter for months.Somehow we're supposed to believe they still lived together and made love each night? Ick, ick, ick ick ick!

On the last page of the novel, he realizes the monster he's been and finally holds his daughter..... sorry, one page?I was waiting for her to dump his ass so he came to his senses... nope.... surely no one would put up with that abuse, especially for the love of their child... nope.... this book couldn't have left me less satisfied. She was not the relentless loving woman to bring him back from death... she was completely pathetic with a complete and utter lack of self preservation or protective instincts a mother should have for her child. Did I say Ick? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars mackenzie's legacy mackenzie's mountain mackenzie's mission
Linda Howard quickly became one of my favorite authors. Her stories of strong men and women are well writen and catch your interest . I am looking forward to reading more of her novels.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST of the Mackenzies!!!
Hey!

I absolutely adored both of these books!!!! Mackenzie's Mountain is a great novel about a schoolteacher (Mary) who just can't let Joe Mackenzie quit high school, so she sets off up the mountain that he lives on with his father, Wolf, to see what she can do to get him back in school. What she finds up on that mountain is a passion she's never imagined existed before with a tall, tough and rugged warrior with a past. Wolf, for his part, has been to jail for a rape he didn't commit and isn't willing to ruin Mary's reputation in their small town, so he refuses to begin a relationship with the sweet lady.

Then, a real rapist is on the loose in this quaint, little town and targeting people who are close to Joe and Wolf Mackenzie. And Mary is one of the top targets on his list...

Mackenzie's Mission is about Joe Mackenzie all grown up and in the Air Force. He meets Caroline, a weapons expert who is working on a top secret weapons system for their latest fighter plane, and finds himself instantly attracted to the prickly beauty. Caroline is overwhelmed by her first taste of passion and initially falls back on her old stand-by of treating men with disdain and instantly going on the defensive. But Joe uses the excuse of the other men's attraction to Caroline to make her agree to pretend to date him so she won't be bothered by the obnoxious fighter pilots (or, at least, so he claims). Caroline reluctantly agrees to fake date Joe, but then the dates become all to real.

But there is one little problem that these two have to overcome before they can really get together. It just so happens that there's someone on the base who's sabotaging the weapons system and all evidence is pointing to Caroline...

These two books are the best in the Mackenzie series, and I think they are some of the best books Linda Howard has written in her entire career. I love these books, and am so glad to add them to my Linda Howard collection!

If you love a good dose of mystery, a great, steamy romance, and reading about two powerful, aggressive characters learning that they are simply meant for each other, these books are for you. Hope all this helps you potential buyers and I hope every one of you has a wonderful day!

Luv ya,
Tashi :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally
Thank you so much! It was a birthday present and arrived very promptly with time to spare. thanks again

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous Linda Howard
So, I admit that I'm a Linda Howard fan - I have every single book she's ever published. But, these are 2 great books - perfect for anyone who's never read a Howard before. Her books combine adventure with suspense and romance to perfection.

With her ability to set the scene, you feel like a friend of the Mackenzie family - listening to the story of how Mary and Wolf met and how Joe's really made something of himself. There are suspenseful moments of laughter, outrage, excitement, and pride, and of course those steamy, drool-worthy moments that make you blush and turn green with envy at the same time.

It's impossible not to like these stories.Be sure to get "Mackenzie's Honor" for the stories of Zane and Change as well as "Mackenzie's Magic" (always part of an anthology since it's a novella) to round out the set.

Linda Howard writes the best hero's in the genre and always delivers a do-not-miss book. For other great Linda Howard books, start with Shades of Twilight (5 stars), After the Night, Mr. Perfect (another 10) or Dream Man - all great books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wolff and Joe
I thought the premise of this series was fantastic. It deals with bigotry, hate, and love.Reading about Wolff and his son Joe meeting their match in Mary is such a joy. Then knowing what Joe goes on to do with his life is just superb.I really wish that she had gone on to do books on the other brothers. ... What would make the perfect man?

That's the deliciously racy topic that Jaine Bright and her three girlfriends are pondering one night at their favorite after-hours hot spot: Mr. Perfect. Would he be tall, dark, and handsome? Caring and warmhearted -- or will just muscular do? As their conversation hears up, they concoct a tongue-in-cheek checklist that becomes an overnight sensation, spreading like wildfire at work and sizzling along e-mail lines. But what began as a joke among friends turns deadly serious when one of the four women is murdered....Turning to her neighbor, an unpredictable police detective, for help, Jaine must unmask a killer to save her friends -- and herself. Now, knowing whom to trust and whom to love is a matter of survival -- as the dream of Mr. Perfect becomes a chilling nightmare.Amazon.com Review
Setting: Warren, Michigan, present day

Sensuality: 8

Jaine Bright and three close friends share dinner one night and during casual conversation, create a list of qualifications for the perfect man--some logical, some hilariously funny, some racy. Within days, their tongue-in-cheek wish list of attributes for Mr. Perfect has been leaked to the press and the resultant publicity is overwhelming. Coworkers, TV crews, and reporters barrage the quartet with comments and criticism.

As if Jaine doesn't have enough to cope with, she has a new neighbor who she suspects is a criminal. She's relieved to learn that her neighbor is really an undercover cop, but she's still wary--because smart, sexy Sam Donovan handles her sharp witticisms with easy humor, and Jaine suspects that he may threaten her heart. What Jaine doesn't know is that she's about to need Sam desperately for something other than romance because her circle of friends is in big trouble. Unfortunately, that list of qualifications for Mr. Perfect has touched off a madman's rage. All of their lives are threatened and some of them are going to die, maybe all of them, if Sam can't stop the unknown killer.

Mr. Perfect brings to readers the quintessential Linda Howard hero, whose straightforward, "me Tarzan, you Jane" attitude plays well with a smart, witty heroine. The rapid-fire dialogue between the two is downright hilarious at times, even when the two are about to steam up the windows and burn up the sheets. It's difficult to balance this kind of humor and sensuality with edgy suspense, but Howard manages it with aplomb. If you enjoyed Heart of Fire and Dream Man, you're going to love this latest novel. It's drop-dead wonderful.--Lois Faye Dyer ... Read more

Mr Perfect is a very good book - one that made me put down the other things I was reading so I could finish it. It is not, however, anything like any other books I've seen classed as romantic suspense. Why? Well for starters the suspense does not arrive until halfway through the story. Mr Perfect is funny, about friendship, and also contains many aspects of a contemporary romance novel. The characters are interesting - if occasionally annoying - and the main relationship made for a wonderful read.

This review is full of quotes - it's one of those highly quotable books!

Jaine and her three work colleagues create a list of what constitutes the `perfect man'. It gets leaked to the office newsletter, and then from there - as, unfortunately the rubbish so often does in real life - the media picks up on it and the publicity gets out of control. Then one of the friends is murdered. Then someone starts stalking the others. Jaine's neighbour Sam takes a personal interest in the case - and in Jaine.

"Let me go," she said again.
"I can't."
She eyed him suspiciously. "Why not?" Actually, she was afraid she knew why not. "Why not" had been growing in his wet jeans for a few minutes now.

Sam grinned, thinking of Jaine and her stubborn chin with that cute little dent in it, and her almost-dimples and sparkling blue eyes. She attacked life, rather than simply letting it happen; he'd never before met anyone so annoying and funny and sharp. He had major plans for her, the most immediate of which was getting her under him.

When the relationship begins (after quite a bit of time spent just with the heroine and her friends) it happens FAST. Yet it worked for me. Because the hero and heroine seemed like such normal people with such normal goals in life, I believed it was possible for them to rush into everything. I also think it was necessary for the story to get the two of them into something serious.

He eyed the cucumber. "Have I interrupted something?"
Jaine wanted to hit him, but she didn't have the energy. Still, something in her lightened at his presence.
"She's going to put it on my eyes."
He gave her a sideways, you-gotta-be-kidding look.
"It'll roll off."

I didn't like that we didn't get anything from Sam's point of view until more than halfway through the book. By then I'd assumed we weren't going to hear from him. I would have preferred to have been in his head earlier, but that's a minor issue.

"Go away," Jaine said. "I'm busy."
"So I see. What is this, the Produce Five Hundred? I've been chasing you up and down the aisles for the last five minutes."

"Thing? I don't do things."
"You'll do mine," he said under his breath,

Sam was an excellent hero because he was so realistic and such a guy and yet he really gave a damn about Jaine and did his best to help her and her friends.

"You're such a guy."
"What the hell did you want me to be, a ballerina?"
No, she didn't want him to be anything except what he was.

I had a fair idea how the story would work out, but there were enough twists and turns to keep me guessing and keep me interested. I also loved that the one Too Stupid To Live moment in the book did not come on behalf of the heroine - and not on behalf of the hero. It was Jaine's sister who screwed up and put them in danger. There're many authors who should take note of that!

Nothing alarming had happened, except he discovered that Jaine sang a lot when she was tipsy.

He could shake them awake, he supposed, but that wouldn't be much fun. What was fun was finding a pot and a metal spoon and banging them together, then watching the four women bolt upright, wild-eyed.

So is this the greatest romantic suspense book ever? Probably not. As it's not even a suspense book until halfway through I'm not sure it even qualifies as a candidate for the title. However it's so, so good. It's one of those books I couldn't put down to go to bed (the sun was rising when I finished!). I fell in love with the flawed and funny characters, I laughed out loud many times, I was scared in the appropriate places, and I became the author's newest fan. What more can you ask for?

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST Linda Howard Book EVER
Four women get together to create a list of qualities in their Perfect Man. Drama and hilarity ensues as a killer sees the list as a taunt to his perfection. Detective Sam Donovan lives next door to one of the "list ladies", Janie Bright. Janie is one of the most fun, brilliant characters I've read about in forever. She has a sarcastic sense of humor and a killer wit. Sam Donovan is an alpha male with all the right moves.

Read this book. You will NOT be disappointed! I have read everything Ms. Howard has ever written, and this is heads and shoulders above the rest. The only other books that this could compare with is her Mackenzie series. Honestly, Sam reminds me a bit of Zane Mackenzie.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Linda Howard
There are many of her books I absolutely love, but this one made me howl with laughter. The characters are great and it's rather a creepy story. I've read it several times since it's original release. I just wish Linda could get back to this type of writing. It's been very hard to top this one for me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Love Linda Howard - but not Mr. Perfect!
I just recently discovered Linda Howard.Mr. Perfect is my 8th novel by her.I absolutely adored After the Night, Shades of Twilight and Dream Man.Coming in next was Kill and Tell and All the Queen's Men.Then there was Now You see Her and Cry No More.I gave them all 5 stars - even though After the Night, Shades of Twilight and Dream Man should have gotten 10 stars! However, I just finished Mr. Perfect and am sorry to say, I did not enjoy this one that much.Maybe it was because Jaine was a little too caustic and maybe just a little too funny for me.It could be my problem.I don't know, but this one, I will not recommend. Not that I didn't love the "Sam" character, I did.I will be shortly moving on to her next novel - because 1 out of 8 isn't bad and so far, other than Mr. Perfect - Iadore Linda Howard!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!!
This book had a little of everything I look for in a book; mystery, suspense and hot steamy romance. I felt the author did a good job of balancing all of these elements. We have Jaine the sarcastic funny girl next door who along with her friends write a list of what they called "mr.Perfect." The list then becomes a big deal even making it on the news causing someone to start killing off the girls who made the list.
This is one of my favorite Linda Howard books. Jaine's character is so funny and relatable and who wouldn't love to have a hot cop neighbor like Sam. I really enjoyed the dynamics between the two, especially how they hated each other at first. The whole book was great. The suspense kept you on your toes and the characters kept you laughing. this is why Linda Howard is one of my favorit authors.

1-0 out of 5 stars Total Rip Off
I loved this book.I loved it when it first came out I don't know how many years ago.But to re-release it, in hardcover no less, and then to charge that ridiculous amount is, well, ridiculous. You'd be better off buying it used.Save yourself the money. And while we're on the topic of Linda Howard, maybe she could write more of this type of romance/mystery instead of mystery with a little bit of romance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grant and Jane
Midnight Rainbow was originally published as a Silhouette Intimate Moments in the '80's and is about 250 pages. It is more exciting, more action-packed, more romantic and plain more fabulous than many a longer mass market paperback published nowadays. In fact it is one of my top 5 favorite Linda Howard books. If only she still wrote like this! The plot is simple enough - burnt out special ops hero must rescue spoiled socialite from villain's Costa Rican lair. There's a microfilm involved, which the villain and other nefarious types are burning to get their hands on, but this is just the McGuffin. It's the well-developed leads and their sizzling chemistry that make this story special.

Without going into graphic details, Ms Howard paints a hero who's seen too much and done too much, both in his special ops work and previously in Vietnam. Grant is dead emotionally, unable to even relate to his family, and holed up on a remote Tennessee farm when he's called into action one last time. He's also tough, capable, manly, rugged, commanding, and sheer sex on a stick. One of the hottest heroes ever! Readers who love protective alpha men or Southern bad boys should run to get this book.

Jane Greer (don't call her Priscilla!) is far from the bubble-brained twit Grant expects, she's intelligent, resourceful and brave. Too often so-called "feisty" heroines turn out to be TSTL, putting themselves and the hero in repeated jeopardy because they think they know better than a trained warrior. Jane is refreshingly free of this, but she's quirky, zany and just unique. I've never read a heroine quite like her. I admired her too, no way could I trek uncomplainingly through jungles for days on end with little food or water, even with Grant's fine ass swaying in front of me.

Most of the book takes place in the jungle, which is painted so well that I could feel the steamy heat. And jump at the anaconda scene *shudder*. There's lots of steamy heat in the love scenes too, which are sensual and fairly graphic but tasteful (no anaconda jokes please). Grant and Jane's chemistry is amazing, rarely have I felt a hero and heroine to be so completely perfect for each other. 5 big fat juicy stars :-)

1-0 out of 5 stars Price for 228 pages?
I love all her books, but I can not beleive the price of her two books here , 228 short pages for almost 19.00,, I do bleive that is a rip-off and getting a bit greedy, needless to say I wont buy either of these book,, to short for 19.00 smacks,

4-0 out of 5 stars If you love old LH, you will definitly love it.
I like the old Linda Howard, this is a good read though the story was a little bit out of date and unrealistic, who care. It was well written and made you didn't want to put it down.Much and much better than LH's recent books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read
This was a wonderful book and this is why I think so:

Official "Ro" Reasoning:

*Spoiler Alert*

(-0 Stars) The story was very well-written with great story progression and cohesiveness throughout the novel.

(-0 Stars) This book had great characters. I loved Grant and I loved Jane. Jane wasn't stunningly beautiful like so many heroines in books nowadays which was absolutely refreshing because the average woman isn't 'hauntingly beautiful'. She was also courageous without seeming mannish. She was strong; she didn't take any crap from Grant. Also, Grant was very manly without being overbearing, he was lovingly protective of Jane all the while being stubborn about that love.

(-0 Stars) Their chemistry was amazing without being raunchy and the love scenes were well written.

Good job, Ms. Howard. Great book.

Official "Ro" Rating: 5 Stars, Highly Recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "How about an authentic Yankee doing a southern woman?" (Jack Russo) - 4 1/2 stars...
Daisy Minor wakes up on the morning of her 34th birthday and realizes that she's had enough.Enough of being the small-town, plain-Jane librarian.Enough of living with her widowed Mom and spinster Aunt. Most of all she's had enough of her perpetually dateless, man-free existence. Her biological clock is ticking away like a time bomb and some changes are in order. With a little help in the hair, make-up and wardrobe departments, Daisy decides she's ready to make her mark on the singles scene...resulting in all sorts of mayhem.Good thing Police Chief Jack Russo is good at dealing with mayhem.Too bad Jack isn't Daisy's "type" - or could she be wrong about that?

This book reminded me of why I started reading Contemporary Romance in the first place!Daisy and Jack have great chemistry and their scenes together sizzle with snappy dialogue that doesn't sound scripted. The story is tightly written and flows beautifully. There's a lot of humor and I found myself smiling through most of the book and actually laughing out loud in a few places.

The author did insert a sub-plot involving young women and girls being smuggled into the States and forced to work in the sex trade. It felt a little out of place in this otherwise light and funny story and never quite reaches any believable level of suspense.I really enjoyed this book, but you might be disappointed if you are looking for a real Romantic Suspense read.Highly recommended if you want a well-written, sexy Contemporary Romance.

Contains little (if any) strong language and a couple of sex scenes that fall in the mild/moderate range.

5-0 out of 5 stars A can't put down read!
This is a book that you'll want to read again and again and again. I first read it many years ago. I had since lost my original copy, but still wanted to reread it. So I bought another copy. Linda Howard has several books that tell stories that are timeless this is one of them. Enjoy your read!

5-0 out of 5 stars 10 Star for Open Season!
I just loved Open Season.I have read most of Linda Howards books and I adore pretty much all of them. But Open Season was a delight!I loved the character, Daisy Minor. I laughed throughout the whole book.Mind you, I don't usually go for the humorous books. In fact, I wasn't thrilled with Mr. Perfect.I found it too silly for my taste. However, Open Season was wonderful!I loved Daisy.I loved everything about her.Daisy's make over was so much fun to experience and you just couldn't help but falling in love with her personality.
If you are looking for a good book and a very good time - try Open Season.I promise you won't be disappointed!
Another very good one that I just finished from Linda Howard was Dying to Please.Order that too! These are two books that you just can't go wrong with.
Happy reading!

2-0 out of 5 stars Could have been good, but wasn't
This book was truly lacking in some essential Linda Howard elements that made it nothing short of boring.Regardless, I still found myself turning page after page, hoping for something but found I had absolutely no emotional investment in anything that is going on.The romance is quick and light, there are some funny moments, but the suspense, or lack thereof, is more sympathetic towards the villains.

On Daisy Minor's 34th birthday, she has an epiphany. She wants the American dream; husband, children, home. The problem is she lives with her mother, is a stereotypical dowdy librarian, with frumpy clothes and has absolutely no prospects for a boyfriend because she's simply not attractive.Daisy proceeds to go through a complete makeover process, dies her hair, buys new clothes and makeup and gets her own apartment to begin her manhunt. While at a bar, Daisy unknowingly witnesses a murder and in turn becomes the hunted.Jack Russo is the chief of police in Daisy's town and he enjoys getting Daisy riled up.After her transformation, he simply can't get enough of her and they start an affair in very short order. While spending time with Daisy and learning about her friends and life, he realizes that not everyone is whom they appear to be and discovers that she is being used as bait in an investigation as well as being hunted by murderers.

Simply put, this book is so out of the norm, because Daisy never has a clue that she's being used or hunted so there's absolutely no suspense tied to it.Jack is always two steps ahead of the game and Daisy is never actually in any danger. Although intelligent, she doesn't get to use her wits to escape, figure out who's out to get her or anything else that makes Linda Howard's women so brave, strong and exciting. If anything, the book is really about how Jack accidentally stumbles into a sex trade ring and stops it without so much as breaking a sweat. The transformation Daisy goes through seems so extreme, right down to dying her hair from brown to blond seems so superficial in her efforts to be attractive, that it's hard to reconcile that someone loves her for being her. If you're a Linda Howard fan like me, you'll read it because there's almost nothing left to read, but if not, skip this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Open Season
I love Linda Howard books and this is a fun filled and heart warming story about a woman who finally realizes that life is passing her by and decides to do something about it.Wonderful.I bought the audiobook, and unfortunately it was abridged.Since I had already read the book before listening to it on tape, I was disappointed. You just cannot truly enjoy this story in an abridged format. ... The Story
Niema was a witness to her husband's murder five years ago. John Medina was there to take care of her and get them out of the country safely. He has to go on a black opsmission and talks Niema into it. A new explosive is being made and is unstable compound. John needs to steal information and plant a bug in the arms dealer's phone line. Deep undercover Niema has more fun than she's had in years. Together Niema and John must make it through the op trusting each other is the only way out.

Thoughts
The book is fast paced and interesting. I read it all in one sitting. Niema and John's relationship was complicated and romantic. Their attraction is a force that's uncontrollable. I love Linda Howards book, the queen of romantic suspense. This book is well written, very intellegent and witty. It's not my favorite of hers, but its good all the same. If you enjoy a good spy novel with suspense and romance this is the book for you

4-0 out of 5 stars the usual Howard greatness
Young widow of Navy SEAL goes undercover to bug computer of French weapon's dealer. She pretends to be the love interest of attractive & mysterious Mr. Temple, who's really a special ops guy who was with heroine & the rest of their Special Ops team when her husband died 5 yrs ago & who's kept tabs on her because of his personal interest in her.

This romance-suspense is an exciting Howard book. The action-suspense kept me on my toes & the romance engaged my emotions.Sexual chemistry sizzled & culminated in a passionate love scene, even though it didn't occur until 3/4 of the book. Good pacing

Well recommended.

Product Description
If you sense someone’s watching you from afar, or if you feel a shadow other than your own at your back, I might as well pack it up and call it a day.

It’s a job that makes a killing. Efficient, professional, and without apology, Lily Mansfield is a hired assassin, working as a contract agent for the CIA. Her targets are the powerful and corrupt, those who can’t be touched by the law.

Now, after nineteen years of service, Lily has been drawn into a dangerous game that hasn’t been sanctioned, seeking vengeance for her own reasons. Each move bolder than the next, she is compromising her superiors, drawing unwanted attention, and endangering her very life. Though stress and shock have made her feel somewhat invincible and a little cocky, Lily knows that she too can be taken out in an instant. And if it’s her time, so be it. She intends to go down fighting.

A CIA agent himself, Lucas Swain recognizes the signs of trauma in the line of fire. His orders: either bring her in or bring her down. Yet he too is drawn into the game with Lily Mansfield, dancing on a tightrope as he tries to avoid a major international incident while still battling a tenacious foe who is dogging their every step. Keeping laser focus on the task at hand while vigilantly watching her back, Mansfield never sees the lethal peril that lies directly in her path . . . and how loyalty has a price.

Chock-full of the intrigue, breathless action, and sensuality that have made Linda Howard the master of romantic suspense, Kiss Me While I Sleep is a daring thriller of passion, sudden twists, and richly imagined characters who live and breathe in readers’ hearts. It is the most gripping and complex novel of Linda Howard’s career. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kiss Me While I Sleep - Loved it!
I finished this book this morning and I can't stop thinking about it.I fell in love with Lily and I fell in love with Lucas.Linda Howard allows you to truly get into both of their heads and understand their thoughts and reasoning. This made me feel so close to them.Because of the negative reviews, I almost didn't purchase this book - so glad I did.I was out for dinner this evening and believe it or not (even though I was having a wonderful time), my mind kept slipping back to Lily and Lucas.I didn't want the story to end.I got so attached to them.It was as if they were a part of me.I highly recommend this book.I wish Linda Howard could come out with a second book about Lily and Lucas so those of us who fell in love with them could see how they are doing.
Great going Linda - please keep them coming!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice for driving
This audio CD was very suspenseful. It had a man and a woman reader, I've never experienced that before. I will admit that man's voice was not sexy and I did not find him at all appealing. I think with a different male reader the audio very would have been better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wake me up when it gets better
I must admit: The plot is far more intriguing than the writing itself, which contains generic descriptions and depersonalized dialogues.

CIA professional killer Lily Mansfield (good choice of last name here) plots revenge on the family responsible for the death of her daughter and dear friends. After the first killing, nothing much moves, plot-wise or style-wise.I'll take static if the writing itself is the hero of the novel.I'll forgive language less than elaborate if the plot is good.Example: John Grisham, the king of plots. But if it has neither, where is the reader supposed to go?

It's only toward the end, when CIA agent Lucas Swain gets in contact with Lily and the two have sex that things wake up a bit.Something Howard can do is sex scenes. It gets hot, hot, hot, but too hot, too late. Too late for feelings, at least, which are not believable here. They are plastered on a story that seems improvised from one page to the next. This technique --or lack thereof--might work on more literary pieces. But in a genre defined book where the destruction of a research lab (where the creation of a virus and its antivirus are motivated by profit) is carefully planned, so should the construction of the novel that narrates it.The action packed ending does not save the novel, specially when the last pages, formulaic and thus predictable, can only weaken it.

Too bad: The title was so cool!

3-0 out of 5 stars Should be a 2 but the writing was still good
I unfortunately find that I've read most of the good books by Linda Howard and am scraping the barrel for the remaining. This was not a bad book and the writing is still excellent, but the content and plot is completely off.

Lily Mansfield is a hired assasin for the CIA who goes rogue when her friends and daughter are killed due to an operation gone bad.She takes out their killer but unfortunately for her, the killer has crazed relatives who want to avenge his death, and the killer is also a CIA sanctioned informant which means that the CIA also needs to stop her.Knowing all this, she finds herself trusting and pairing up with Lucas Swain who saves her from a near death predicament.Lucas was sent by the CIA the stop Lily.We don't actually know what his orders were until the very end, but all along, we're led to believe he is there to kill her.Once Lucas is with Lily however, he decides that he can make a conquest before fulfilling his orders. As usual, Howard's love scenes are always steamy and erotic, and eventually Lucas falls in love with Lily and helps her to complete her mission.

Having said that, all of the deception and twists of the novel were over manipulated and forced in this book. It actually had all the ingredients to be a really good story, but seeing as how this is supposed to be romantic suspense, it fell short of both romance and suspense.Lily doesn't meet Lucas until page 134 and from there, he's just plain goofy.Lily knows that he's likely CIA, but she enjoys his sense of humor and her attraction to him to convince herself she's safe. The behavior doesn't make sense for a contract assasin for almost 20 years. The premise of the ending is predictable, but it's so brief that I found myself searching for another chapter, not realizing it was over. This is certainly one of those times a story would have benefited from an Epilogue.Overall, it simply leaves you unsatisfied.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kept Me Glued to the Pages
Lily Mansfield had been recruited by the CIA as a contract assassin when she was only eighteen. Now she's in her thirties and living in France, where she does the unforgivable, a revenge killing of an Italian godfather type named Salvatore, a bad guy who had three people she cared deeply about killed for destroying his lab, a place where he was hatching a vaccine scam. Now not only is Salvatore's malicious son after her, but the CIA is as well, because wouldn't you know it, Salvatore was one of their prized assets.

The folks at Langly hire send another contract shooter named Lucas Swain to do away with Lily, but as things go, they tumbles into each others arms and take up arms against the bad guys, finishing the job that Lily's friends had died for. Yes the story seems a little bit out there, and there is more, but you know what, the book held me enthralled, refusing to let me off the sofa, till I finished and isn't that what a good book is supposed to do? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just love the old Linda Howard
I have waited for a long time of this book. This is one of the best of LH's publication and I could not put it down.It was well written and the story plot was exciting and passionate. The character of H/H were lovable and honest, though you may argued the likabilty of Sabin, I did love him.

I do like to read all the old LH books, for the current publications, it always show lack of the passion and integrity between the H/H, just like "Death Angel", don't know what inspire LH to write it, the story is a mess.

If you like a fast read and passionate story, you will love it.

3-0 out of 5 stars For long-time Howard fans, this book is like a time capsule
Plot Summary:A young widow walking on a Florida beach at night sees a man struggling in the surf and rescues him from drowning. He's been shot multiple times, and unconscious from a head wound.Rachel Jones has personal experience with the shady side of life, and so instead of calling the cops, she follows her instinct to care for this man in private. When Kell Sabin finally regains his senses after four days, he is suspicious and closed off toward Rachel. He quickly realizes that she's a good person who could get caught in the crosshairs, because the people who tried to kill Sabin won't stop until they know he's dead.

Originally published in 1987 under the Silhouette Intimate Moments imprint, Linda Howard's Diamond Bay has been rereleased in 2010 as a hardcover, where I found it at my local library. While this novel isn't exactly a hidden gem in Ms. Howard's backlist, it is an okay read, IF the reader can choke down a few massively implausible plot points.Be warned - one or two might stick in your craw like a chicken bone, and unfortunately it gets in the way of the reader's ability to willingly suspend disbelief.

Diamond Bay is also overly melodramatic at times, but at least this story feels complete from start to finish, despite it's slim size (218 pages).Since I was just disappointed by the similarly-sized Ice: A Novel, it proves that Ms. Howard can develop a complete romance within a tight page count.

I enjoyed this story because I could see the seeds of future characters that Ms. Howard developed, especially John Medina, her CIA ghost who figures most prominently in All the Queen's Men.Kell Sabin is a rough outline who becomes even more sophisticated, sexy, and dangerous with John Medina. It was also noticeable to me how the women in this story took on the more traditional roles reserved for women, but in Ms. Howard's later books the heroines are government agents, or charging into danger themselves.Romances were quite different back in the 1980s, and this book is like a little time capsule for Ms. Howard's fans who want to compare her new style against the old one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love It
Love the series, Linda Howard is great at combinding romance and action all in one.Recomend the series as a very good read

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of My All-Time Favs!
One of my favorite re-reads, Diamond Bay has everything I adore. An uber-alpha hero who isn't a jerk, a direct, intelligent heroine who doesn't have to tell us she's smart and strong because she shows it in everything she does and their gut wrenching romantic story.

Rachel is satisfied with the peaceful life she's made in Diamond Bay on the gulf coast of Florida. She spends her days with her boisterous pets, gardening and doing her chores and she makes a good living writing and owning two souvenir shops. But her quiet life is shattered when Kell Sabin washes up on the shores of Diamond Bay, shot and unconscious.

A woman who knows how to get things done, she almost kills herself dragging him back to her house, because her instincts tell her he needs protected. She of course makes the right decision because Kell is a super-secret agent for the American Government who lives a solitary life of danger and intrigue.

When Kell wakes up, he find himself well taken care of and safely tucked away in a secluded house off the Bay he dove into after being shot at. He's momentarily confused, because he knows someone is trying to kill him, but he has no idea how he got to safety. Who is holding him prisoner?

After shopping to buy things for her unexpected patient, Rachel arrives home to a fully conscious man. When she realizes who the man is holding a knife to her throat from behind, she's both relieved and frightened. Calmly she informs him she is no threat to him and that he is on the mend.

The overly cautious Sabin doesn't know if he should trust the startling woman before him, but, in his weakened condition, he has no other choice. As he allows himself to be cared for, he realizes there is a strange attraction between them. Strange because he's feels he knows her even though he's been unconscious for the last three days.

As for Rachel, she's already fallen for the dark stranger who washed into her life so suddenly, and there is nothing she won't do to keep him safe from those who mean to harm him.

Kell doesn't like the way she puts herself in danger when the very man whom he suspects took part in engineering the attempt on his life shows up at her house. He doesn't like it all. But her help is invaluable and when he calls in a trusted friend to aid him in snaring the double agent, he knows he has to get away from the woman who not only saved his life, but is about to steal his heart. He, of course, needs to for her own good- for if his enemies discover that he would sell his soul to keep her safe, he would place her and his governments' secrets in the gravest of dangers.

Rachel isn't gonna make it easy for him to just walk away, but when his greatest fear is realized, walk away he does.

What kind of life can someone lead when they are forced to live apart from their love of a lifetime?

You'll have to read to find out!

This steamy one-time category romance from the 80's still tops my list as my most romantic, comfort read of all time- even all these years later!

4-0 out of 5 stars Tears of the Renegade
I loved this book.Susan was a perfect match for Cord.Susan stood up for her family without turning her back on Cord.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This story is about Cord, who is honestly kind of a jerk, and Susan who seems to nice to put up with him.
Cord wants revenge on his Aunt and Cousin for being mean to him in his youth. Susan wants to protect her Mother and Brother-in-law (she is widowed). Cord is trying to enact a hostile takeover on the family company and destroy his aunt and cousin financially. There are a few good points to this book, I like that Susan was actually very happy with her husband, physically and mentally. It is rare that the widowed wife is completely happy with her husband in romance novels.
However, I really had an issue with the way Cord treated Susan throughout the novel, he was dismissive of her as an honest and capable person, inconsiderate, and there was one seen that really freaked me out how she was saying "no" and he was not listening. I think these issues are somewhat typical of romances from the '80's. SUsan is also stupidly loyal to MIL and BIL, despite evidence of their underhand business dealings, and puts her well being in the line fro two people who don't really deserve it and would likely not do the same for her. I like Howard's newer stuff better, i would recommend sticking with that.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Story
I have no regrets in regards to buying this book.It was worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thrilled!!!
I have been searching for copies of Linda Howards' earlier books and was so thrilled to finally find this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Will give you frown lines....
OK, this is an OLD story by Linda Howards ( nothing at all like her more recent books), nevertheless, its STILL one of the MOST annoying love stories out there. If you can take 250pgs worth of seeing a weak, spineless goodie-goodie heroine getting walked all over for the sake of " showing what love is all about to the man who abuses me in every way" , then DO read this.

Hero walks into town to get revenge from his family after years of being away.Heroine sees the hero, she falls for him, he abuses her constantly, but she cant help falling in love, the MORE abusive and spiteful he gets the MORE she loves him... Hero back stabs her and her whole family, she falls into bed because she LOVES him, and MUST show him she loves him... riiiight...... *rolls eyes*

Ahem, so this is what this book is like.....truthfully, is THIS is a romance novel? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love those Mackenzie's!
These stories are actually pretty standard romance stories. You know from the beginning who will end up with who and both parties have "never met anyone that made them feel that way".Having said that, I love these stories!I've read other romance novels and had no desire to read them again, but I bought these so I could read them all over again.I had gotten them from the library years ago and when I saw them for my Kindle, I had to have them. There's just something about the Mackenzie's that makes these hard to put down.I breezed through the books again and loved them as much the second time around. I would recommend these to anyone that likes romance novels.Yes, there are cliches and sometimes things happen in the stories that make me question how any woman would put up with that behavior but overall they're very entertaining reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mackenzies bundle: Mackenzies mountain
The stories were so full of action and romance I didn't want it to end. Especially Joe's story who was sooo hot.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Do It!!!
I got this audio version from the library.I do a lot of traveling and I love Linda Howard so how could I go wrong.

I listened to the tapes even though I read that they were the abridged version (I only listen to and buy unabridged editions)and I regretted it imensely.

The editing was awful. So awful that bad books were even worse (All That Glitters and Independant Wife).Loving Evangeline I thought was an okay book, but because the editor cut out so much of the story, this too becomes an awful book.Loving Evangeline is one book that I think readers should take the time to read.

If you have to get the audio version then go through your library and obtain a copy.Whatever you do, do not buy it first!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Linda Howard ALWAYS gets 5 stars from me!!
Since there is no description of this audio book, I thought I would add one.
This is a Collector's Edition of *3* Linda Howard romances (abridged). All That Glitters, Loving Evangeline, and An Independent Wife.
I took a chance and ordered this not really knowing what I would be getting, and I am so glad I did. ... Read more

Product Description

With the scintillating sensuality and high-voltage thrills that distinguish all of her blockbusters of romantic suspense, Linda Howard grips the imagination and touches the heart as only she can, in her sixth dazzling New York Times bestseller.

A talented painter in her early thirties, Paris Sweeney has achieved enviable success: her work sells at an exclusive New York City gallery, and her popularity is at an all-time high. Life is good, and Sweeney, as she prefers to be called, is content.

But lately, Sweeney's dreams -- lush, vivid, and drenched in vibrant hues -- seem to echo a growing restlessness that has taken hold of her. Suddenly, impulsively, Sweeney falls into a night of intense passion with millionaire Richard Worth. Now, the true dangers of her all-consuming urges are about to be revealed where Sweeney least expects it: in her paintings.

After a creative frenzy she can barely recall, Sweeney discovers she has rendered a disturbing image -- a graphic murder scene. Against her better instincts, she returns to the canvas time and again, filling out each chilling detail piece by piece. But when a shattering, real-life murder mirrors her creation, Sweeney falls under suspicion. With every stroke of her brush, she risks incriminating herself with her inexplicable knowledge of a deadly crime. And every desire -- including her hunger for Richard -- is loaded with uncertainty as Sweeney races to unmask a killer.Amazon.com Review

This is an excellent book. I would definitely recommend it. Candra's unique gift and her relationship with Richard will keep you hooked.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book is Great - the Abridged Audio is the PITS!!!!
Having read this book several times - I can accurately say that whoever did the edit for the ABRIDGED AUDIO EDITION absolutely RUINED this book. It is disjointed and so many key elements to the book that make it really interesting - not to mention sizzle - are left out. I knew better than to buy an abridged, but I like the original story so much I wanted to give it a try. I strongly advise that you pass on this. It's a shame that they couldn't bother to put the UNABRIDGED version on here. Save money on the Abridged Audio and buy the book - the WHOLE book - it's much better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting twist of paranormal mystery and romance
This was a solid read and had a lot of interesting moments.I enjoyed the paranormal elements of the main character but have never been a fan of damsels who are completely in distress.I prefer my heroines with some spunk and sass and our girl Sweeney comes off as abrasive and rude.

One year ago, artist Paris Sweeney's (known as just Sweeney) life is completely altered when she sees her first ghost. From there, strange things keep happening like all the traffic lights turning green when she's near, or knowing all the answers to Jeopardy questions before they're even asked. She paints pictures and has an exclusive contract with the Worth gallery. As a recluse, Sweeney is blind of men and a personal life in general, but one day as part of all the strange goings on, she finds herself painfully aware and attracted to Richard Worth, the soon to be ex-husband to her friend Candra Worth, the owner of the art gallery.Richard has always admired Sweeney and once he realizes Sweeney has finally noticed him as a man, he makes his move.Sweeney does not want to get involved considering Candra is her friend and the divorce is not final, but eventually she starts to depend on Richard when the worst of her changes takes place. She finds herself painting death scenes that have happened as if she were there, and eventually death scenes that haven't even taken place. When this happens, Sweeney's body goes into shock and hypothermia and Richard is there to save her when it happens.Richard and Sweeney are unable to prevent the death and find they must prove that they were not the killer as well as find out who the killer is.

The tension and romance are very nice in this book, however the suspense was not quite so suspenseful. There were only a handful of people who could have done it and it really didn't matter which one it was.The book mentioned too much of the changes in Sweeney but didn't tie any significance to her curse or gifts depending on how you look at it.Last, but certainly not least, the epilogue was an extreme disappointment. One year later, it was less than half a page, and didn't touch on how Sweeney's clairvoyance has come along or even if she and Richard made their dreams come true.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another good one from Linda Howard!
Setting: Modern Times

This is one of my favorite books by Linda Howard. A classic love connection. I love especially that she has these little quirks that make her different: she can see dead ghosts, all traffic lights turn green upon her approach, parking spaces made available, and her plants bloom no matter what, plus there's the sleep painting of murder.

This book is a "MUST have" to add to your romance book collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars An okay read, more like a 3.5
I've recently started reading Linda Howard's backlist, and this one was an okay read. The characters weren't developed as fully as in the other books I've read by her, nor was the relationship between the hero and heroine realistic. Both of them did things that seemed too out-of-character (I don't want to ruin the story for anyone, so I won't go into detail). That said, the underlying plot was interesting, and I did read it all the way through to an ending that felt very rushed. It's really a 3.5, but I rounded down because of the weak characterization and the rushed ending. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Touch of Romance
The premise of this novel is achingly erotic- hard, cold on-the-run outlaw Rafe is wounded by a bounty hunter in late 19th century Arizona Territory, forcing him to seek out the help of a shanty town doctor who happens to be Annie, an independent spinster type with a passion for healing people. Seeing no other option with the law and bounty hunters one step behind him, Rafe kidnaps Annie at gunpoint and forces her deep into the woods to bring him back to life. Once there, Rafe finds himself attracted to Annie, to the point of pain and suffering, and basically decides to keep her long enough that he can seduce her before returning her to her practice. Of course, things don't work that simply (thank goodness- it was a bit horrifying of an idea for a moment) and the two find themselves on an adventure soon enough.

The book was pretty hot and gripping for the first sixteen chapters or soon. Even though Rafe talks like a modern day teenage boy (he loves telling Annie how hard he is, etc) you find yourself liking him more and more. He's despicable because he has to be- an innocent man who has been chased for years for a crime he didn't commit, he's lived on the run and in the wilderness for far too long, after just serving in the war. He'd once been a respectable southern gent, though you see very little of that remaining in his speech and manners. His growing vulnerability with Annie makes him seem sweet and deserving of love and a second chance.

Annie is a fine enough heroine- her passion for healing and medicine make her worthy of pride and you find yourself liking her independent streak. However, her inability to handle herself with Rafe is a direct contradiction to that supposed strength and independence. Annie seems to lose both intelligence and strength when she's near Rafe and the seduction scenes are somewhat hard to stomach.

That being said, this was still a four star novel up to the point of chapter sixteen. I had a hard time reading the novel at that point and found myself skimming pages and then skipping pages and then skipping to the end. Without giving away the plot, I'll just say I found the course of actions to be out of character and too fantastical. I certainly didn't need the element of fantasy either in my western romance... but maybe that's just me. Of course, you'd have to read the novel to understand that part.

This novel was one of the least romantic romances I've ever read, but it was still a good piece of historical fiction until it seemed to unravel at some point and lose focus. There is a great conspiracy subplot too that would have been better had it been more evolved and more of a focus. It was three to four star novel in the beginning. Since I couldn't finish it, I'm giving it two.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have read
This has to be one of the best books that I have read.I love Linda Howard and have read many of her books. This rates right at the very top.I have read this book twice.I highly recommend it to anyone.Great story writing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Story, Quick Read
I especially get into the mood for a good Western Romance when I visit Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, or even around my home state of Texas!Linda Howard is one of those who writes a captivating story that takes me right back in time with the lay of the land.

For the most part the book had a good story and was quickly read with no problems.Just don't think about the story line or events that play out for too long, they then become a little hard to believe.

I would recommend it to others for a nice quick read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing!
I loved this book. I loved both the hero and the heroine. I loved seeing how they started to care for each other, how they talked and trusted each other. There were no misunderstandings. There were no unnecessary fights or any stubbornness. I loved the setting. I loved it that she was a doctor, independent, caring. He was wonderful, hard and dominating, but also caring and vulnerable. There were some scenes I didn't like so much - their first lovemaking for instance, but at least it was more realistic than in so many other books where the hero is able to hold himself back no matter what. But all in all, I enjoyed this book. And I never felt tempted to throw it through the window, which happens so often with romance novels;) I really recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable read.
Madelyn answers an ad for a mail-order bride. She falls, hard, for Reese Duncan. He, however is still stinging from the hurts that his ex-wife inflicted upon him.He doesn't trust women as far as he can throw them. This is purely a business arrangement for him - but he's never met anyone like Madelyn before. He's strong, mistrusting, easy to anger and she's loving her new life in spite of him.I really enjoyed this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting
I've read a lot of the older Howard books and was very excited to read this one, but I have to admit, I was disappointed.Of course, it was still very well written and had a lot of humor and tension that Howard usually delivers, however the story itself just fell really flat to me.

Maddie Patterson is a well off woman living in NYC who is restless and looking for something to do.She comes across a WantAd from Montana from a man looking for a wife.Because she's bored and doesn't know what she wants to do with her life, she finds the ad intriguing and responds out of curiosity.Eventually, she flies out to Montana and meets Reese Duncan and nearly stumbles over herself at how attracted she is to him. From here, what was a curiosity/joke on her part turns into her seriously hoping he'll choose her to marry him.Reese is still recovering from a disastrous divorce where he lost his shirt in the settlement, takes one look at Maddie and knows he can't afford her. They end up spending a wonderful day together but Reese doesn't want to make the same mistake as his first marriage and sends Maddie home.Maddie is seriously disappointed. After Reese meets all the slim pickings of other candidates, he throws caution to the wind and picks Maddie and she agrees to marry him. From then on, he treats her miserably, punishing her for all the mistakes his first wife made, but Maddie tolerates him and eventually strikes back.I find myself to be a patient person, but I had a hard time swallowing how remarkable Maddie is in tempering Reese. She's a great heroine and I loved her spirit and sense of humor, but I had a hard time swallowing the circumstances of the marriage in the first place.Perhaps I take marriage a little more seriously than a wantad and 24 hour meeting.

The story is witty and fun and a fast read, but overall, I wasn't drawn in or emotionaly invested in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vintage Howard...
Linda Howard is legendary in the romance genre, and this may be one of her finest.I recently reread it to see if it would live up to my fond memories and I am pleased to say, if anything, it surpassed them.

Reese Duncan is the quintessential Howard hero.........strong alpha, stubborn, sexy, and prideful. However, Duncan's Bride stands out to me NOT because of the hero, but because of the heroine.Madelyn is everything that I love my heroines to be.She has a ton of class, heart, devotion, work ethic, and the determination to win over Reese Duncan (a seemingly impossible task).

This book has the ability to make you laugh one minute, cry the next, feel anger and then happiness in the space of a few paragraphs. The ability to draw the reader in is one of Howard's biggest gifts, and in Duncan's Bride..... she outdoes even herself.

Madelyn is EXACTLY what Reese needs. He is an embittered and angry man.Madelyn is all warmth, laughter, hope, and love.Slowly she teaches Reese how to love and trust once more.It takes some time...he's a stubborn man.....but the payoff at the end is worth everything.I highly recommend this favorite of mine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great romance,a pleasure to read and a keeper
I love this book and have kept it since it first came out.A nice play with the mail order bride, embittered Reese just wants a wife, but Maddie is more than he bargained for. It's wonderfully sensual and it also has an emotional core.I believed in these characters and believed in their love.So it's a keeper and a reread for me.Vintage, excellent Howard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book

Product Description
Returning to the entrancing supernatural territory of her popular novels Dream Man and Son of the Morning, New York Times bestselling author Linda Howard has written a sizzling new novel that is her most daring, exciting, and original yet.

In 1985, with much fanfare, a time capsule was buried under the front lawn of a small-town county courthouse, to be reopened in 2085. But just twenty years later, in the dead of night, the capsule is dug up, its contents stolen. That same night, one of the contributors to the capsule is brutally slain in his home–with no sign of forced entry or indication of a struggle. One by one, others who had placed items in the time capsule are murdered.

Besides his suspicions about the sudden, mysterious appearance of Nikita Stover, the chief investigator, Knox Davis, has absolutely no leads. And while Nikita’s no murderer, she seems to be hiding plenty of secrets. With more at stake than anyone else realizes, the smart-talking Nikita is determined to catch this cunning killer–while at the same time battling her own deepening feelings for a man and for a world in which she doesn’t belong.

When readers crave a seductive novel of unrelenting suspense with a paranormal twist, Linda Howard delivers time and again . . . make that Killing Time–a captivating, character-rich story that races along on a breathless plot full of action and intimacy, romance and danger, thrills and intrigue.

3-0 out of 5 stars Meh
Ok I'm a huge Linda Howard fan. I've read every single thing she's ever written and most of my all time favs were written by her. It used to be that I would auto buy her and salivate for the next one. This latest one is why I've stopped that. Don't get me wrong, I read it all (in about 3 to 4 hours, that's how "easy" it was,) but (hating to say it) it was just "eh".

This story is about a time cop from the future (which should have made me love it because you know how I love my Sci Fi) and a cop from small town Kentucky. The plot was thin, or at the very least, too easily resolved and the ending was so rushed I was like, "huh? the climax is here already?". It was like she hit her deadline and said, "Well, I gotta end it somewhere." And did.

The other major problem was the lack of chemistry between the hero and heroine. I just didn't "feel" it like her old stuff.

Anyway, like I said, I didn't stop and throw it against the wall so I can't say it was bad. I just found it lacking.

So in the end, I say read it, but wait till it's in paperback or get it from the library. The HB price isn't worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Literary Triumph!
One of the finest novels of the last 5 years, Killing Time is author Linda Howard's literary triumph over the critics of her work.Perhaps when the entire body of her work is viewed as a whole, it can be seen as uneven. But what author can that not be said about?Hemingway, Faulkner, Jane Austin, etc., have all reached the height of excellence and plumbed some depths as well. This novel, however, is Ms. Howard at the very pinacle of her literary powers. Her characters are believeable, fully developed, and totally fleshed out in their humanity. The plot is stunning in its realism and plausability. The quality of writing is astonishingly beautiful, lyrical, and haunting.Literature rarely touches my very soul and I read a lot of books. This one grabs the heart and doesn't ever let go until long after you close the back cover and rush to find a friend with whom to share this gem.Why this particular novel and Ms. Howard has not received the deserved attention is somewhat perplexing.Elitism is certainly rampant in the world of books. But that this book never received a literary prize and Howard hasn't entered the lexicon of true giants of literature is beyond a mystery for it is an unforgiveable crime.

4-0 out of 5 stars Killing Time - Different but Enjoyable
I enjoyed this book.I salute Linda Howard for trying different types of story lines.Don't listen to the negative reviews. If you are a Linda Howard fan, read it and enjoy.I know you'll love the end.By the time I closed this book - I was very satified and had a smile on my face.I will never miss a Linda Howard book!
Don't forget to read my very favorites - After the Night *******, Open Season ******, Shades of Twilight ******, Son of the Morning *********, Dream Man ******, Dying to Please *****.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is under-appreciated!
Unlike Ms. Howard's usual heroes, this time the main guy is a beta instead of an alpha, but even here he is a very self assured "alpha-ish" beta who has SOME give, but there is a point beyond which the heroine, the other characters, and the bad guys better not push him. I fell in love with him. And I loved Nikita. She is smart, funny and very sympathetic given her unusual origins. I think alot of people who didn't like this story didn't like the paranormal element and went into it with the expectation of a typical contemporary romance. I think that as long as you're armed with the knowledge that this is a time-travel book, and if you're okay with that, then this is an excellent read. I loved it!

3-0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars - It's a treat to see Howard write a science fiction romance
Plot Summary:Chief Investigator Knox Davis finds himself with a string of strange homicide cases, but it all began when the city's time capsule was stolen. While on a crime scene, he finds a woman poking around, and she introduces herself as Nikita Stover, a FBI agent. When her story doesn't hold up, Knox arrests her and Nikita tells him that she's an agent, but from 200 years into the future.

Linda Howard is such a fearless author.I don't know too many writers who can write westerns, thrillers, contemporaries, paranormal stories, and science fiction too.Killing Time falls squarely in that small niche known as science fiction romance, and I wish she'd try it again.I've read this book twice now (once several years ago, just recently for my book club), and while I enjoyed it both times, I feel that there's something missing from this story that keeps Howard fans from loving it whole-heartedly.To me this book falls somewhere between three and four stars.

I am a particular fan of Knox Davis, the curious-like-a-cat investigator who is in charge of the homicide investigation when Nikita shows up out of the blue.He hides his inquisitive nature beneath a laid-back persona, and the townspeople obviously hold him in high regard.I think the problem with the story stems more from Nikita, who comes from the future with more emotional baggage than the reader anticipates. For some reason she doesn't come across as a sympathetic character, and I had a hard time connecting with her.

Still, I thought Ms. Howard crafted a good tale, and it's no mean feat to write about the future.I can't predict what will happen 40-years from now, much less 200-years.I always give science fiction writers extra props for tackling such a mind-bending topic, and I hope Ms. Howard will give science fiction romance another shot. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rule Rules!!
After reading Duncan's Bride (my first Linda Howard romance - but not my last!!) I *had* to find another book like it.After reading many message boards, I learned that LH's heros all tend to be the alpha male personality, which I LOVE: strong, hard-working, stubborn, dominant.I also liked the contemporary "western" setting of the D'sB: big, tough cowboy / rancher - the image is very sexy.So when I stumbled upon this LH oldie but goodie, I was soooo pleased and satisfied with the story. It has all the elements that Duncan's Bride has (sexual chemistry, great love scenes, believable & charismatic characters), but was satisfyingly different, as well (in plot and characters, obviously).

Rule, the hero, rules! And the sexual chemistry between Cathryn and Rule is fantastic. The reviews on Amazon are not that great for this book, which compelled me to write this glowing review.I was doubtful at first that LH could repeat the wonderful work she did in D'sB, but after reading only the first few pages, I was totally in, and having finished it I am so glad I bought it because it is right up there with my ultimate favorite. So if you like Duncan's Bride...Against the Rules is for you!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Dated, flawed but readable.
Really immature heroine, standard strong silent type hero.I read this as a palate cleanser after the awfulness that was ICE.As flawed as it is,it was far more engaging than Ice (Howard's most recent release.)I like Howard's westerns. This is a reprint of a much earlier book, and it reads like that. It's dated, there's no questions about it.But it still fills the 2 hours very nicely.Rule ostensibly works for Catherine, after she inherits the ranch from her dad.She worried about his intentions - does he want her or does he want the ranch that he has managed so well in her absence that people refer to it as Rule's spread.Cat needs to grow up,Rule needs to let go and they both need each other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming.... easy read
LH's earlier work, this story reminded me of how romance novels used to be written (without being too annoying, think Johanna Lindsey, Jude Deveraux, Judith McNaught, and etc). I noticed the mixed reviews here so keep in mind not everyones taste in romance novels are the same, just know that THIS book is NOT what LH's recent books are like, theres NO hardcore, killing, murders, robbery, CIA, FBI ,etc... nothing of that sort in this story. Dont be disappointed and write bad reviews expecting that... this book was written in 1983, purely fictional gooey 'romance' book.Know what you're getting into.

This is a short story about an alpha male named Rule who ends up falling for the daughter of his employer. After an romantic encounter with Rule when she, Cat, was 17 yrs old, she runs away to return years later, feeling more secure, centered, mature and confident since she IS the owner of the ranch... so she thinks. What happens after this is very sweet, theres no real twists and turns to this story, not that I was complaining. The ending was very endearing, it'll make you go awwwww....you know that warm feeling you get when you've finished reading a sweet, sweet romance novel that makes your heart ache with happiness for fictional characters you've just read about, well this is one of those feel-good books. Its only about 250pgs long, pretty straight up , never dragged on IMHO, easily read'able after work before going to bed.Its going to be one of my fav's of all time.Worth every penny you spend on it.

I noticed someone mentioning a spanking scene in this book and wanted to remark on it.When this takes place, Cat was 15 years old, throws a fit and smacks Rule( 11yrs older than Cat ) who was at the time boss at the ranch (her father had passed away). He had just told her she was too young to date a 18 years old guy.So she smacked him, so he spanked her, only time it ever happened. It did not sound abusive to me when I read it, but thats just my opinion.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dated... dated... dated
Young and widowed heiress Cat Donahue returns to the ranch that she grew up on and has since inherited after her father's death. She fled as a teen after losing her virginity to Rule Jackson, the ranch foreman 11 years her senior with a penchant for spanking. With her newly found independence, she tries to rule over him, which does not sit well with this cowboy, who is used to running the ranch without interference. So much for independence - Cat lets Rule walk all over her and continues to warm his bed at night. She's in love, but is he? She can't help but wonder if he's with her for love of her or the ranch he has spent half his life taking care of.

"Against the Rules" is a great example of why older novels should stay in the vault. They simply don't translate well. Howard's he-man version of an alpha male may have been great in 1983; but in 2007 he's just a misogynistic jerk who needs a swift kick in the manhood. Other 80's Howard retreads to avoid include "All the Glitters," "Diamond Bay," "An Independent Wife," "Loving Evangeline," and "A Game of Chance" just to name a few.

1-0 out of 5 stars Are you sure this is Linda Howard?
Ok, so Linda Howards often writes her lead male characters as borderline obnoxious.Perhaps a little too handsome, perhaps a little too cocky. But they usually aren't sleazy. And they are usually at least attractive in some sort of way to the reader.Rule left me cold.So cold, I was reaching for my sweater.Am I supposed to be amused that the 26 year old lowered the pants of a 15 year old and gave HER the "spanking of my life?"Should I find it romantic that he commited statutory rape?(17/28...hello people?!)And where is the chemistry?I mean, I thought Gray from After the Night was taking it a little too far, but at least he and Faith had chemistry.Believable chemistry. All, in all, I guess Linda Howard fans will want to read it for the competionist point of view. But if you haven't read a Howard book, STAY AWAY FROM THIS ONE!!!!! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Starts out so well, but...
I had a hard time "rating" A LADY OF THE WEST.It started out really well and I was enjoying the story.I liked the fact that Jake was a man scarred by loss and was going to fight to regain control of his parents' ranch; I liked that Victoria was a cool, unawakened lady but with a core of inner strength. She even had enough guts to marry a man she barely knew, in order to keep a roof above her relative's heads.

The romantic tension between Jake and Victoria is nicely kept at "sizzle" and there is a good buildup (SPOILER) to Jake and his brother Ben's seizure of the ranch. (END SPOILER)
But after that point, the story went pffft.Jake morphed into a controlling, domineering hero with a constantly hard you-know-what, making up for lost time with Victoria, and Victoria morphed into a miserable little wifey because Jake was excellent in bed but would just never say those three little words.I will say that Victoria did continue to show flashes of her old gumption & strength, but she was also about 2/3rd's inwardly boo-hooing due to Jake's unrelenting emotional coldness.

I see that some readers took offense to a scene where Jake hits Victoria right across the face. It's certainly not the kind of scene I like reading in a romance novel, but somewhat in Jake's defense, Victoria is telling him she's pregnant *exactly* three weeks after their wedding, which took place the day after (SPOILER) Jake killed her husband. He thinks she's carrying the child of her late husband, the man who killed Jake's parents.Jake thinks she's trying to pass off the late husband's baby as his own. (END SPOILER)
While I'm not crazy about this scene (or Jake's immediate assumption that Victoria is willingly tricking him), the author made the action *almost* understandable if not admirable.Unfortunately for me there's nothing much that Jake can do afterwards which makes him any less of a jerk.In fact, although he regrets hitting her and realizes he made a big mistake, Jake *still* won't 'fess up to Victoria that he loves her.

There are well-written subcharacters in A LADY OF THE WEST which propel the story along, and two smaller romantic subplots involving Victoria's female relatives which helped maintain my interest. But it was disappointing to feel a letdown after resolution of the ranch's ownership, which occurs midway through the book. The two main characters lost something for me after this and their now-consummated romance lost all of its tension.Waiting around for Jake to finally say "I love you" to Victoria - which isn't until the last few pages of the story - became a chore, if not quite a bore.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Hero Gone Bad
First, yes this contains spoilers. I gave this book two stars because the portion up until where the hero actually hit the heroine, and draws blood, was very good. I was surprised that all of a sudden it seems like a switch was flipped on the hero. He went from rough but good protective man (which is great, and I love reads on alpha males), to a husband that strikes his wife, feels really no remorse, and then demands she move her stuff back into their bedroom. I also thought of the Heroine as strong up until that point, but she actually refuses to leave the hero, even when after hitting her he tells her she can leave him. He also gives his token word not to hit her again, which I feel is in every pamphlet under warnings for battered women.
So, good book up until page 291, and then it was over for me. The Hero just starts doing selfish acts. No husband would keep a horse around that killed a family member because he wants foals. The author also makes an attempt to tidy the Emma/Ben story line but it comes off as he is marrying because she gets pregnant.
So two stars for a good read before page 291, and then it goes down hill. I love Linda Howard too, but this was wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is what you're looking for!
This book captures it all! There is no boring start, long middle, or short ending. Linda Howard does a great job going into depth with all the characters. I didn't want it to end. This is a classic! A must read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Tough book
This was not your usual light romance set in the West. This was one tough and dark book. The hero, Jake,is really bitter, even with reason, and pretty much stays that way.Victoria, the heroine, is one tough woman to put up with it all.

Spoilers ahead:

He his her! This is not okayIf he wanted to make sure she was not carrying another man's child, he should have waited for awhile. He rushes things, then blames her because he may not be the father.

I hated that the little sister died.I do not read this kind of book for sadness, but for entertainment. I was glad to catch up with Louis in "Angel Creek." That horse should have been let go after he killed the first person (or shot).

All said, this is a book that sticks with you, so I stretched it to a 4.If the characters wre real, I would have hoped they would mellow with age.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok story, not bad.
I wasn't thrilled with the thoughts and actions of the heroine Victoria and her sister Celia. But the story around the guys was pretty good. It's not the author's best work, but it's interesting. In most romance novels, there is an event which separates the couple after they get together.Too many authors disappoint me with their lack of creativity and credibility and use the following event. The couple assume incorrect things about each other based on lack of "normal communication."For example, if one had given a straight answer to the other's question there would have been no conflict. In this book, I was impressed with the author coming up with a conflict based on miscommunication, but no one was lying or being vague.Victoria was honest but Jake didn't believe her, and his reasons for not believing her were logical. That was well done, Ms. Howard.Sexual language: moderate.Number of sex scenes: thirteen.Setting: 1866 New Mexico cattle ranch.Copyright: 1990.Genre: historical western romance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I rec' all in this series!
I did a reread of Linda Howard's White Lies the other night because I needed a sure thing- i.e. the book you KNOW will make you fall in love with both the hero AND the heroine, as well as their HEA- also something engaging yet one I didn't have to think too much over! Linda Howard's oldies are all that for me... but mostly I read it because I needed a sure thing.

White Lies begins with the heroine, Jay, losing her job- a job she's worked her tail off for. Things go from bad to worse when the FBI show up at her door informing her that her ex-husband was involved in an explosion- one that involved a very important agent...and one of them is dead. (It is Jay's job to discover which.)

Shaken, she accepts- it's the least she can do for the man she once called husband and friend, even if she let him go long ago. But immediately upon entering the hospital room, her heart goes out to him- only he's so broken and bruised she has no idea if he really IS her ex-husband.

The man in the bed is just as drawn to Jay- even in a coma- but when he comes to quicker than expected, they are still at square one. He has amnesia.

Altho Jay comes to accept the convalescing man as her ex-husband, something is still very different- he's more intense, dangerous even, and there's one thing she knows for certain- she's falling in love and she'll stop at nothing to keep him safe.

Originally published as category romance in the 80's, The Kell Sabin Series by LH are some of all time favorite re-reads and they hold up even today!. I rec' all of them!

4-0 out of 5 stars secret agents AND amnesia!
I'd been putting this one off because, in general, I'm not a fan of Linda Howard's writing style. Add to it that it's a 10-year-old reissue of a 16-year-old category romance, and I'd have been content to let it just stay in the TBR pile forever.

But it pushed my guilty pleasures buttons, and I'm glad I read it.

Jay is a divorced woman (yes, it was written in 1988, and this book follows the convention of giving the heroine's masculine names. I think the idea was to show how manly... er... strong and independent they are. I've always found it irritating.), on the verge of losing her job to nepotism, when government agents approach her regarding her ex-husband Steve.

Seems Steve and one of their agents were in an explosion. One died, and the other's in a coma. Both bodies are too damaged for the agents to identify them, so they ask Jay to help. The injured and unconsious man responds to Jay's presence, and she gives them a tentative "well, it might be Steve" and they're very eager to accept that as a positive identification.

The agents are also eager to keep Jay by his side, and the doctor agrees, as her presence positively affects his vital signs (lowers his blood pressure, I'm guessing). They give her an offer she can't refuse: they'll provide an apartment for her and pay her a salary so she can quit her job and devote her time to "Steve."

When he wakes up, he has amnesia.

I think that's as far as I'll go--there are more developments, but we're getting into spoiler territory here, and even though the developments are pretty obvious, I don't want to ruin them.

White Lies is in some ways a quintessential romance, especially of its time period. The situations are unbelievable even to the most credulous, and border on the ridiculous, and the romance itself is rather naive, fairy-tale-ish. For example, Jay's willing to ditch her entire life based on the fact that she's been told that the injured man's eyes are brown underneath the bandages, and she's unwilling to peek under the sheets even once, because that would be violating his privacy (???).

But here's why I enjoyed reading it: I'm a sucker for secret agent intrigue, and for amnesia stories. I think it's the mystery about it that grabs me. I got sucked in wondering why the agents were so eager to have her identify the man as Steve, and of course the falling in love with someone you can't see is hugely romantic, like the story Gwen tells about herself and Newton in House Sitter.

Even more fun is when... okay, it's a spoiler, but if you didn't see this coming, I worry about you... both of them realize that he's not Steve, but each decides to keep the truth a secret to protect the other.

I had so much fun, I didn't even notice the problem I've had with Howard's writing style--maybe it wasn't there, or isn't present in all her books, or it developed later. Anyway, I'm glad I read this, but it's not going to convince me to look for more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really good
I got the book off ebay as a set of four. The author is one I like, so thought I would take a chance with some of her older novels.I am really glad I did. This book captured my attention from the beginning.

The first part of the book is best.Jay and Steve's attachment begins immediately and the sense of closeness grows. The second half is good, but not as good.I really never saw her lie as necessary. She would not have been sent away if Steve did not want it.The sexual tension also seemed somewhat forced during the second half.If the two halves were really consistent, they would have been in bed as soon as he was able.

Anyway, I enjoyed the book.It helped pass several pleasant hours.I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it
This was my second Linda Howard book and I've read it twice since. Since I own more books than I can count I seldom get to read a book twice (except Pride and Prejudice which I've read about 7-8 times!) so this says how much I like it. This book, is one of my favorites of contemporary romance.
Jay is called by the FBI to identify a man completely covered in bandages and in coma as her ex husband Steve. She starts to have feelings for him once more after spending some days beside him but on the other hand she's not so sure she's identified the right man after all. Steve seems more self assured, strong, determined than the easy going, flighty man she used to know. Do they get to have another chance after all?
The mystery and tension run deep thoughout the book and the only disadvantage of it, is its small size!!! I so wished it lasted longer!

5-0 out of 5 stars White Lies
This is one of my favorite Linda Howard books! I'm on my third paperback copy. I've reread it that many times. It never leaves me bored.Read it and see. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars She did not do Joe justice
I loved the first book Mackenzie's Mountain- and Joe's character had a lot of potential but this book fell flat for me- I did not feel the chemistry for the 2 main characters-I hate when an author makes a girl go from virgin who has never dated to wanton sex goddess- not believable- and Joe falls madly in love after having amazing sex- it takes more than that to fall head over heels

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable book
I liked the book and characters just fine.Joe needed a strong woman to measure up to him. The plot just seemed to contrived.Joe seemed too perfect.Caroline seemed too intelligence and innocent.Just too many toos.

I read this one right after McKenzie's Mountain. Some distance between the two would probably given this one a better chance to stand on it's own two feet without so many comparisons. There wasn't the sense that things came hard to these two so the rewards could seem deserved.

I probably am not putting this well. The first book captured some emotions that this one did not.I enjoyed it anyway. It passed the time nicely and I would like to read more books about the McKenzies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable story of lust and love.
I loved the character Joe, whose natural abilities and hard work take him to the top in his field of air force fighter pilots. He is in charge of testing and developing a new jet.Caroline is on the project team.He tells her she should pretend to have a romance with him so the other pilots will leave her alone. This is the story of her romance with Joe.It was a nice story. There were bad guys as well.Sexual language: mild.Number of sex scenes: four.Copyright: 1992.Genre: contemporary romance.

2-0 out of 5 stars I liked Joe better in "Mountain"
Give me the determined 16 year-old from Wolf's story, rather than the domineering 35 year-old here. This older Joe really didn't live up to his potential from the first book.Yes, he has achieved his dreams but he is harder and more pushy in this book.Rather than seducing Caroline into a relationship he basically just informs her that he will have her - no romance at all.He calls her "my woman" more than he does by her name, and their sex scenes are all lust, no tenderness. Yes, the sex is hot, but when Joe tells Caroline "you'll lose your cherry" I actually cringed. Is he a grown man or a frat boy?He doesn't hesitate to suspect Caroline of a crime and then just gives her a light apology afterwards.I guess we are expected to chalk it all up to a stereotypical fighter jock mentality, but I was hoping he'd turn out more like his dad, whom I adore.Probably not fair of me, but there it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hot, hot, hot. Joe MacKenzie is awesom
I loved this book. Joe MacKenzie is sexy personified. His control, strength, and sexuality left me breathless. This book is one of a series of five MacKenzie books. I can't wait to track down the others! I'm a new Linda Howard fan, that's for sure. ... Read more
