Product Description

First published in 1980, More Bad News is the Second Volume in the research findings of the Glasgow University Media Group. It develops the analytic findings and methods of the first volume Bad News through a series of Case Studies of Television News Coverage, and argues that much of what passes as balanced and factual news reporting is produced from a highly partial viewpoint.

Focusing on the British economy in crisis, and its thematic linkage with the Social Contract during the first four months of 1975, the book deals with three main levels of activity: the story, the language and the visuals. As the book unpacks each level of routine news coverage a picture emerges which has the surface appearance of neutrality and balance but is in fact highly partial and restricted

Product Description
Going against the tide of optimism that characterizes most books on doing business in China, this study reveals an unstable, disorganized and capricious legal system that is far from trustworthy. The author, a practitioner in Shanghai, contends that all foreign investment in China will remain totally at risk until a broad range of enormous administrative lacunae are filled with responsible, reliable legal norms. These gaps in the system - all cearly analyzed and measured here for the reader - include the lack of clear delineation between legal and policy norms, the breadth of discretion accorded to bodies charged with legal interpretation and implementation, the limited scope of judicial review, and resulting problems of legislative inconsistency and haphazard legal enforcement. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How China's legal system really works
This book examines how China's legal system really functions. It focuses on explaining the difference between what appears on the face of the law in China and how it really operates in practice. He demonstrates how the discrepency is not just due to a clash in Western inspired legal concepts and Chinese culture, but by a concerted attempt by various actors to contrive a legal system which maximises discretionary power of administrative authorities to make and interpret law.

Topics covered include the creation and application of law, consistency, interpretation, and supervision over enforcement and lawmaking.

The book is well regarded in academic circles, and is on the reading lists of most Western law schools that offer Chinese law within their curriculum. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Excerpted from my July 2010 review in The National Barbecue News
.....As long as we're talking about books from foreign lands, let me present to you one from a bit farther away than just across our northern border. This time we'll cross an ocean to bring to you a book from England. "Big Book of BBQ" by Pippa Cuthbert, Lindsay Cameron Wilson, Peter Howard, Julie Biuso, Penny Oliver and Ian Batchelor ($14.81, New Holland Publishers, 304 pp.) is a look at how they do it in merry olde England. We may have won the war a couple of centuries ago, but the Brits seem to have made away with a whole bunch of our barbecue secrets. It all makes for an interesting read, especially as you take note of how they've subjected their own culinary influences on some familiar dishes (hint: it's more than just measuring everything in the metric system). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Material for any Teacher or Student of Art
The last decade of the 19th century produced revolutionary changes in architecture, painting and sculpture. These new forms shaped many features of the art of the 20th century.A general statement of the art of our times is that one by one the old criteria of what a work of art ought to be has been discarded in favor of a dynamic approach in which everything becomes possible.

The author brings the distinctive aspects of each work into focus by means of visual juxtaposition.Contrasting works gives insight into differences in approach, purpose and form. No restrictive labels are affixed to styles. Artistic development is placed within its general cultural framework, not separated from political and intellectual concerns during the period in which the artists lived and made their art.

This book with 1,600 illustrations of which 300 plates are in full color is a comprehensive and inclusive visual record of the nine individual decades from l890 - l980.The emphasis is equally divided among the three specialties - decade by decade.

The text is so interestingly informative indicating formidable research and a high degree of selectivity and sensitivity in the use of the material. Each page adds immeasurably to ones knowledge and background.

This volume would provide comprehensive material for any teacher of art as well as unlimited possibilities for a student.

Highly recommended as most definitive and detailed and marvelously illustrated - really a pleasure to peruse. I love this book a lot. ... Read more

I think this inexpensive book is a gem! I have found it suitable for use as teaching material with pupils of all ages. The progressive layout is attractive and easy to follow, with modern illustrations and textsupporting the printed music. As my title suggests, one of its plus pointsis that, on the whole, the book offers REAL tunes for students to play(particularly important for older learners!) rather than speciallyconcocted ones. Reservations? Some of the "advice" given is,perhaps, down to personal opinion (e.g. cleaning strings with eau decologne!). Basically though, this book will encourage, rather than put off,the beginning pupil and carry them onto greater things! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 10 stars for this book
This is one of the best books I have ever read about the underwater world. Incredibly beautiful underwater photography of high quality. The photos do not only depict animals swimming around but, for example, sarcastic fringehead males in a showy territorial "fight," close up.

I also like the authors' sensible view about animals and diving in the ocean. No show-off accounts of near-shark-escapes but an honest experience, mostly good but sometimes scary, of working under water. The authors recount some extraordinary events, such as a ride on a manta after freeing him from entangling fishing nets, or unexpectedly finding themselves surrounded by a school of fish that is being slaughtered by marlins.

With this book we get a wonderful view into the ocean world but also a fascinating account of what it is like spending many hours a day waiting, scouting, decompressing, refilling tanks and back to waiting so one can capture a never seen one-minute event on film that made it worth all the work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A poetic underwater journey!
Stare at the beautiful underwater photographs. Sitback, relax and gently discover the Ocean Realm with the still images of Howard Hall and his wifeMichele, images that, as Peter Benchley (Jaws, The Deep) writes in theforeword, are among the finest in the world. Dive. Wander through the Kelpforests of the northern Pacific. Get a close-up of sharks and squids inmagic detail. Enjoy the vivid colors of the reef and watch lobsters and seaturtles, dolphins and whales in an exciting photographic journey! Sincethis book is not a reference work, you will also enjoy reading it slowlyand in the direction of your choice, diving at pleasure through the lighttext that describes the Hall's adventures as filmmakers and marinephotographers. And then you will also find some information about thesea-life captured in the images and poetic hints about scuba-diving andunderwater photography. A nice dive, a pleasant reading and, at the pricethat Amazon.com is offering it, a real gift. Buy the book! ... Read more

Product Description
On War is one of the most important books ever writtenon the subject of war. Clausewitz, a Prussian officerwho fought against the French during the NapoleonicWars, sought to understand and analyze the phenomenon ofwar so that future leaders could conduct and winconflicts more effectively. He studied the human andsocial factors that affect outcomes, as well as thetactical and technological ones. He understood that warwas a weapon of government, and that political purpose, chance, and enmity combine to shape its dynamics.

On War continues to be read by military strategists, politicians, and others for its timeless insights. This abridged edition by Beatrice Heuser, using theacclaimed translation by Michael Howard and Peter Paret, selects the central books in which Clausewitz's views onthe nature and theory of war are developed. Heuser's introduction explains the originality of Clausewitz'sideas, his education and background, and summarizes his key theories, while explanatory notes provide furtherinformation on the historical examples Clausewitz cites.

About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars not the princeton edition
I don't mind amazon being enterprising, but it constitutes a form of fraud ("bait and switch") to redirect those attempting to find a Kindle version of the Princeton University Press, Peter Paret and Michael Howard edition of On War to this edition. Please stop this practice: the books are not remotely the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Worth Rereading
This book is a good edition of the military treatise, "On War."As von Clausewitz himself noted, his treatise was written to not to advance a new military system, but to establish the basic concepts of war, and, according to von Clausewitz, its most important activity battle. His purpose was to supply the raw material for developing military theories and systems.

To establish these concepts von Clausewitz draws on his on military experience and historical examples. In doing so he proves he is indeed a keen observer and very careful thinker. Although these days he is more quoted than actually read, his treatise contains many insights that are as relevant to 21st Century warfare as they were to the Napoleonic era from which they were derived.

For example, von Clausewitz presents a short but excellent discussion of battlefield intelligence (which he correctly refers to as `information'). He clearly understands that intelligence does not represent absolute truth or accuracy, but only approximations and probabilities. And then there is his famous concept of "Friction", which he uses as rubric for all those unexpected and often incalculable factors which can delay, disrupt, or even destroy even the most carefully crafted military operation. One wishes that he had devoted more than a shot section to this remarkable concept.

Now von Clausewitz has a somewhat narrow view of both war and battle. He conceptualizes war as a matter of clashes of conventional forces on the battlefield and does not really consider its broader manifestations in the form of economic or asymmetric warfare. His strategic thought is limited to B.H. Liddell Hart termed "military strategy" or battlefield strategy as opposed to Grand Strategy involving national policies. There is nothing wrong with this approach, but the reader ought to be aware that this is a closely focused treatise.

Perhaps the greatest error that von Clausewitz made in producing this work was creating so many quotable aphorisms in his text. This has led to wholesale quoting out of context of his work which often has resulted in profound misunderstandings of what he is really saying by folks who have read the quotes, but not his actual writings. This is a shame because von Clausewitz is really a worthwhile read who has a lot of still relevant concepts on war and battle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a great book if your a military buff. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know the science of war. It was well written and very interesting. Buy this book!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Looking for a theory of war.
It is an extensive work, since it fits with the epoch, in which writing little was a sign of inconsistency, little importance and scanty reflection. The books or parts that compose it were finished in variable degree by the author, whose premature death did not allow its conclusion. I am interested in the first chapters on the theory and the philosophy of the war.
Other books treat on the tactics of a period in which the enemy deployment was staying at the sights of the enemy command and his HHQQ and auxiliary, placed in a nearby height. He praises Liddell Hart's opposite: a decisive battle using the maximum own concentration and power on the enemy army.
In an age of masses armies, inaugurated by Napoleon, soon was clear that it was not possible to win a war between full armed nations, in an alone great battle. It was necessary a campaign with successive victorious operations, looking for the achievement of the military goals of the campaign (theatre of operations, Europe, Pacific Ocean, Africa) or the strategy. In addition, already there did not exist a genius advanced to his epoch as Napoleon.

Be careful ordering an abridge edition of this work. Becuase some of the books could be missing. ... Read more
