Product Description
The Dilemmas of Social Democracies seeks to advance the eradication of poverty and the ethical construction of social democracy and sustainable peace. Howard Richards and Joanna Swanger argue that the reason that capitalism resists transformation and that social democracy is so hard to achieve is because of the philosophical and institutional underpinnings_the constitutive rules_of capitalism; the book therefore explores the historical origins of these rules, their implications for blocking progress toward social justice, and how they can be improved. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Review from Branddenotes.blogspot.com
Put in general terms, the point of the book boils down to this:
1. "Expecting people to be motivated to act to meet other people's needs by a desire for economic gain or profit is only a partial answer to the problem of motivation, not the whole answer."
2. "Expecting the price-signals generated by supply and demand in markets to tell people how to act to meet other people's needs is only a partial answer to the problem of guidance, not the whole answer."

So far, it sounds like the authors are in the mainstream Unitedstatesian liberal/European social democrat stream of thought. Let's stick with liberal economics, capitalism, but put some soft stockings on the market's invisible foot so it's stomping doesn't hurt so much. But then...

3. "To the extent that a society depends for meeting people's needs on profit motives and price-signals, measures designed to alleviate poverty, which weaken profit motives and/or distort price-signals, are likely to backfire."

This sounds like the same thing that conservatives will say, that the good intentions of the liberals/social democrats are actually counterproductive, and do the opposite of what is intended, thanks to the counterintuitive but immutable laws of economics.

The authors wouldn't disagree, except they would note that "economics" should not be reified and turned into universal laws like the laws of physics. On those (vanishingly rare) occasions when neoliberal economics is correct about the real world, it is only so because the governing customs are those of neoliberal economics.

What the authors' argument boils down to is similar to that of the early communists who viewed European social democrats as deluded traitors whose concessions to capitalism would never work, because the intrinsic nature of capitalism - namely, that high profits are essential to ensure investment hence employment and high wages down the road - would not allow the ideals of social democrats to be implemented for long. Without wealthy foreign markets that demand a social democratic country's products, the country will be without the high level of profits necessary to ensure both high wages and high levels of investment at the same time. When once-backward countries caught up and began to produce high quality products using highly exploited laborers - hence at a lower cost of production - social democratic countries simply couldn't compete as well, and their incredibly successful economies finally experienced problems in funding their redistributive policies, much to the relief of neoliberal economists, who previously had been reduced to arguing that these wealthy, egalitarian societies would be even better if only they ditched the policies that made them what they were.

The bottom line is: the underlying constitutive rules of the modern worldwide economy must be changed to allow for motives other than self-enrichment (for a few) and self-preservation (for the many) to operate. Kind of like... socialism. ... Read more

Product Description
Microsoft's Active Server Pages technology is still arelatively new way to create dynamic Web sites and Web-baseddistributed applications. However, during its short life span, it hasevolved to become the foremost tool in the Windows-oriented Webprogrammer's toolbox. This is probably due to the ease with whichcomplex pages and applications can be created, combined with theability to use home-grown custom components, and existing Microsoftand 3rd party commercial components, through the Component ObjectModel (COM/COM+) architecture. Microsoft is currently working on thenext generation of ASP, provisionally called ASP+. While it stillsupports existing ASP pages and applications, ASP+ is actually acomplete rewrite of the existing versions. It changes the way that youneed to think about ASP and your Web-based applications and Websites. 'A Preview of ASP+' is the first book to outline the changesand the new ways that you can use ASP in your applications.Amazon.com Review
Microsoft's new Active Server Pages+ (ASP+) standard promises a lot more for Web developers who work on the Windows platform. A Preview of Active Server Pages+ surveys the new features and APIs that you'll need to know to develop effectively with ASP+. Stressing practical e-commerce examples, this book will be a welcome resource to anyone who programs in ASP already and wants a look at what's next from Microsoft.

This text gives you an excellent comparison of the old ASP with the new ASP+. (Many examples show both ways of coding by using a side-by-side comparison.) The book makes the case that ASP+ is a better way to program with easier scripting (by using the new Visual Basic 7 or the new C# [pronounced c-sharp], available with the next version of Visual C++) and easier access to components. Based on Microsoft's grandly named Next Generation Web Services (NGWS), ASP+ promises a new era of more maintainable code. Prominent sections showcase the various controls available in ASP+, from HTML controls to intrinsic controls to more advanced ("rich") controls. How to add data validation by using built-in ASP+ objects is explained, too, as is how to create custom components. Later chapters look at the improved abilities of ASP+, such as easier configuration, authentication, and deployment. The book ends by showing you a nicely functional e-commerce application that's written in ASP+.

By listing ASP+ objects and APIs from Microsoft in a handy appendix, programmers can get a sample of what's available. (There's also a useful section that details the most important differences for developers who are moving from ASP to ASP+.) Although some of this material might change as ASP+ moves to its final form, A Preview of Active Server Pages+ sets the stage with a valuable tour of what to expect in what surely will be a better way to create dynamic Web content on the Windows platform. --Richard Dragan

3-0 out of 5 stars It *was* good as an intro to ASP.NET
I enjoyed getting this book so early on in the .NET beta. Obviously superceded now, and full of repetitive sections, but with no competition it was a winner! ;-)

3-0 out of 5 stars Save your money for full blown release
There will be several more changes to the .NET framework.Notice how I said .NET and not ASP+....It is no longer called that. The examples are okay but the explanations are not that great and lacks the typical reader involvement that I have grown to love from the WROX family. This is my first disappointing review for WROX and hope it's my last.Save your money for BizTalk or Commerce Server books until this is a fully baked language and framework.

1-0 out of 5 stars session variables
According to Ch. 9 all session variables are there for, is to write debug pages. Whoa! that's VERY interesting, however I would have thought that, just maybe, there is more to that than what this book offers, not. A very disappointing manual as a whole, and particurlarly annoying when one realises than the only reason this book is as thick as it is, is due not to content, but use of large fonts and continual repetitions. Not to be recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to get started
This is a great book (as to be expected from Alex Homer) for beginning to understand .Net and ASP+. It doesn't go into the .Net framework in too much detail but explains how ASP has progressed to ASP+ and ADO to ADO+.A must read for any ASP devloper who wants to move to .Net

5-0 out of 5 stars Decent preview
Although I am a little late I'd like to add my review for those of you who are planning to purchase this book. I think it is a nice pioneering review for ASP+. (ASP.NET). A lot has been said about .NET, the only thing I'd like to add that this book was probably the first one to be published about the .NET platform even before the name was .NET. So the info in the book is still relevant but the names have changed a little bit. If you are interested in learning the .NET platform get a more recent source other wise to learn ASP.NET I believe it is a good choice. I'll give it 5 points mainly because the examples are written in c# which is a nice change. If you'd prefer VB there are still enough examples. ... Read more

Product Description
After a failed attempt on his life by an unknown terrorist cell, Professor Daniel Dupont decides to fake his own death with the help of Doctor Juard. The government authorities, believing that the attack is part of a series of political assassinations, send Wallas, a recently promoted special investigator, from Paris to the provincial town where the crime took place, which by coincidence he visited as a child. As he wanders the confusing streets of the town, he finds himself increasingly lost in a web of conspiracies, doppelgangers and memories. Cleverly deconstructing the detective-fiction genre, "The Erasers", Alain Robbe-Grillet's first published novel, shifts between various narrators and time frames, while maintaining the suspense of a conventional thriller. The result is an engrossing examination of consciousness and reality which is also one of the founding texts of the Nouveau Roman school. ... Read more
