Product Description
Written in 1820, Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is one of the earliest pieces of American fiction still in circulation. The story follows Ichabod Crane, a strange and superstitious teacher, who seeks to win the affection of Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter of a wealthy farmer in the town of Sleepy Hollow. Upon leaving a party hosted by the Van Tassels, Crane is chased by a Headless Horseman -- the ghost of a Hessian soldier, and disappears. While Katrina is left to marry Crane's rival, Brom Bones, the reader is left to interpret the mystery of the horseman. Irving's work ranges from thrilling, to clever and humorous, to hauntingly vivid as he moves throughout the tale. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless
This is one of those stories that needs to be savored. The words have a beautiful cadence that make for great material to be read aloud. The story itself is fun, with vivid characters and a bit of mystery. But I go back to it every now and then just to experience the beauty of the language.

4-0 out of 5 stars review
I bought copies of this book for my students. They arrived on time and in perfect condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story
I knew how this book turned out before I even started it. But the author writes so wonderfully I felt like I was just learning the story as I went along. I sat up, wide-eyed, as I read the chase scene, afraid of the ghost as though it were in my room. Amazing author no wonder this is a classic.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Quick, Thrilling Read
The majority of this short story is spent on developing the characters, some of which are not pertinent to the story.Once you get through the characters introduction, the story happens quickly and leaves the reader questioning what really happened and a desire for more.

If you're looking for a ghost story, this isn't the book for you.But if you're looking for a thrilling, quick read, definitely pick up this classic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Short Story
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is set in the early 1800s in the Dutch farming community of Tarry Town.Ichabod Crane is the local school teacher and a scarecrow of a man.The first two thirds of the story establish a love triangle between Crane, a beautiful young heiress, and a young man named Abraham Van Brunt. The remainder of the story deals with events involving Ichabod and a certain horseman.

Those reading this book in search of a horror novel will be sorely disappointed.Much of the writing dwells on the atmosphere and charm of the setting, the nature of life in a small community, and other non-suspenseful items. There is a chase that certainly adds tension toward the end, but it is fairly brief. This is not to say that Sleepy Hollow is not worth reading. It's obviously a classic and is a pleasant read. But it's much more of a wry commentary on life in a farming community than it is a tension packed thriller.I would recommend it to any reader willing to accept it for what it is.

Product Description
Tales of the Alhambra is a collection of essays, verbal sketches, and stories by Washington Irving.

Shortly after completing a biography of Christopher Columbus in 1828, Washington Irving traveled from Madrid, where he had been staying, to Granada, Spain. At first sight, he described it as "a most picturesque and beautiful city, situated in one of the loveliest landscapes that I have ever seen." Irving was preparing a book called A Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada, a history of the years 1478–1492, and was continuing his research on the topic. He immediately asked the then-governor of the historic Alhambra Palace as well as the archbishop of Granada for access to the palace, which was granted because of Irving's celebrity status. Aided by a 17-year old guide named Mateo Ximenes, Irving was inspired by his experience to write Tales of the Alhambra. Throughout his trip, he filled his notebooks and journals with descriptions and observations though he did not believe his writing would ever do it justice. He wrote, "How unworthy is my scribbling of the place." Irving continued to travel through Spain until he was appointed as secretary of legation at the United States Embassy in London, serving under the incoming minister Louis McLane. He arrived in London by late September 1829. -- from Wikipedia ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A literary introduction to the founder of Islam
In the last two decades of his life, Washington Irving produced a number of biographies intended for "the family library." In many ways, these works resemble the brief biographies currently being produced by literary figures for the Penguin Biographical Series. With a strong emphasis on the narrative events, while recounting the general literary and cultural traditions that enliven his subjects, Irving produced highly readable and intelligent works, among then studies of Christopher Columbus and George Washington.Published in 1850 after Irving returned from his tour as Minister to Spain, "Life of Mahomet and His Successors " was initially a sketch for what Irving hoped would be a longer study of the Islamic invasion of Spain and its effects on Spanish culture. At the request of a friend, Irving lengthed his intial sketch of the Prophet, revising it years later, again at the request of a friend, and adding an appendex, "Of the Islam Faith" that examines Islamic articles of faith and the daily religious practices of Moslems.Although Irving is a product of an Enlightenmenteducation, he is by no means dismissive of the aims or beliefs of Mohammed. For instance, in discussing the various miracles attributed to Mohammed, Irving notes that Mohammed himself said that the only miracle was the Koran.Irving also notes the reactions of Christians and Jews during the foundation of Islam--that many said he was anti-Christ, that many signs and portents in Constantinople excited the religious authorities throughout the Mediterranean world. Irving's harshest criticism is reserved for the transformation of Islam during the prophet's life into a political force, often of violence and intolerance, which in Irving's opinion, distorted the spiritual truth of Mohammed's earlier visions.Despite these criticisms, Irving ultimately offers the reader the argument that the truest measure of Islam and its founder can be located in the beauty of the Koran.Read with Karen Armstrong's study of Islam, as well as NJ Dawood's translation of the Koran, this forgotten biography will extend your historical understanding of this important man and the world religious movement he founded.

5-0 out of 5 stars An American classic legend, a "ghost" story
The legend of the headless horseman roaming through Sleep Hollow is one that I first read in elementary school and I have encouraged my children to read. Ichabod Crane is a poor and awkward schoolteacher who boards at different farmhouses during the year. This way, he had a place to live without being an excessive burden on any one family. After arriving at Sleepy Hollow, he learned that while one day is much like the next, the people spice up their lives by telling tales of ghosts and other creatures of the night. Their favorite is the one about the soldier of the Revolutionary War whose head was taken off by a cannonball. To this day, he rides his horse through the woods, searching for his missing head.
When Ichabod becomes enamored with Katrina, the beautiful daughter of a wealthy farmer, he has a rival, the dashing and handsome Brom Bones. Katrina's father has a party and Ichabod and Brom both attend. Brom keeps many of the people spellbound with his stories of seeing ghosts. Ichabod is unnerved by the tales and is frightened when he goes to leave. On the way back to his current residence, Ichabod encounters the headless horseman, who chases him and throws his "head" at Ichabod. The next day, Ichabod's hat is found next to a smashed pumpkin, but Ichabod is never again seen in Sleepy Hollow. Hereafter, Brom Bones was known to display a faint smile every time the name of Ichabod Crane was mentioned in conversation.
This is a classic American folk tale, based on the legends of early America. It is a ghost story for children, and the ending is clearly one where the explanation is obvious. It should be read by all children so that they understand that legends are often made from easily explained facts.
