Product Description
This book continues the personal story of Jabra Ibrahim Jabra (1920–1994) that began with The First Well: A Bethlehem Boyhood. Jabra was one of the Middle East’s leading novelists, poets, critics, painters, and translators (he was the first to translate The Sound and the Fury into Arabic), and is the writer who is given credit for modernizing the Arabic novel. This book not only helps us understand Jabra as a writer and human being but also his times in post–World War II Baghdad when Iraq was enjoying an unprecedented period of creativity in literature and the arts.

As a bright and inquisitive young man he became friends with the archeologist Max Mallowan and his wife, who, he later learned, was Agatha Christie (she wrote The Mousetrap during this period, in a little mud brick room). Jabra’s intellectual autobiography quickly developed as he traveled to Jerusalem, Oxford, and Harvard University, where he studied with I. A. Richards and Archibald MacLeish. A number of different teaching posts in Baghdad provided him opportunities to become friends with many leading poets, such as Buland al-Haydari and Tawfiq Sayigh; historians like George Antonius; and the renowned translators of Arabic literature Desmond Stewart and Denys Johnson-Davies.

But this book is not only about matters of the mind, it is about matters of the heart as well. Jabra beautifully describes his lengthy love affair with a young Muslim woman, the beautiful Lamica, whom he first met near Princesses’ Street and whom he eventually married. He recounts all of the difficulties they had to surmount, and the pleasures to be had.

This is the last book that Jabra published during his lifetime. Not only is Jabra’s life an outstanding example of the circumstances—and fate—of the Palestinian in the twentieth century, but it also provides countless interesting insights into the cultural life of the Middle East in general and its modes of interconnection with the West. ... This book is a disaster. There are mistakes in the text, mistakes in the math, mistakes in the diagrams, mistakes in the end of chapter problems. I don't know how the publisher let this one be printed.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very effective introductory text
The text is geared towards the student who is proficient in basic circuits and electronics, and does a good job at teaching the fundamentals of power electronics. There are errors in the text, but I recommend to go to his website, since the corrections are listed there. His website also had interactive applets which help to teach the concepts of power electronics. The exercises are challenging and relevant to real-world problems.I would recommend this text for someone new to power electronics.

Product Description

Poetry aficionados will appreciate this beautifully designed and illustrated collection of 200 haiku by the four most celebrated Japanese poets of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries: Basho, Buson, Issa, and Shiki, who modernized the form and coined the very term haiku. Enhancing their work are four seasonally-themed groups of verse, many written by Basho’s students and associates. The translation is thoroughly readable and contemporary, and the images evocative. An enlightening introduction offers biographical information on the featured poets, background on the nature of haiku and its development within the Japanese poetic tradition, and a short account of the Buddhist practice to which most of the writers were connected.

4-0 out of 5 stars 750 russian verbs and their uses
This is an excellent supplement to the Big Silver Book of 555 Russian Verbs fully conjugatedby Jack Franke or the Big Silver Book of 555 Russian verbs is an excellent supplement tothe present book by Issa Zauber. Sven Aschberg, chronic student of russian language

4-0 out of 5 stars good reference for verbs, prepositions, and objects
If you're like me, you have a hard enough time just picking up vocabulary, let alone trying to remember which prepositions are used with certain verbs, and which verbs can take objects in the dative, genitive, prepositional, or instrumental case. This book covers all these areas and gives good examples.

My only complaint is that sometimes verbs are shown with their aspectual pairs, and sometimes they aren't.For example, the perfective verb kupit' is listed by itself, but the listing for the imperfective form pokupat' shows both forms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly indespensable
I've been using this book for 1 1/2 years now and its dog-eared quality is second only to that of my main textbook. Its sample sentences are what bring new verbs alive to me. I've had Russian friends tape record these sentences as I've encountered new verbs, so I've gotten the benefit from both print and aural presentations of the book's contents. If I hadn't bought this book I would have had to invent it myself. It, together with 501 Verbs: Fully Conjugated and the Russian/Eng dictionary are my triumvirate. There is zero chance you'll regret this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY useful
Anyone studying Russian should have this book. The many examples of usage are what make it so incredible. It does't replace a standard dictionary, but it is an outstanding supplement. I can say that it is a big help to me and is a book that I highly recommend to people.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best verb references for Russian!
Although it isn't as exhaustive as Daum and Shenk's verb tome, this book is perhaps even more essential for the Russian language learner. Its strengths are that it not only covers petty much all but the most specialized verbs (believe me, 750 verbs are more than you'll ever actively use), but it also illustrates them in context -- giving you the variant meanings when used with different cases and in conjunction with different prepositions. These last two points pose the biggest difficulties in using Russian verbs properly, once the learner has mastered the conjugations and the idea of aspect. Regular practice with this book would benefit ever the most advanced students of Russian.

Now, if someone would just craft a good workbook using this book as a basis, we would have a very powerful learning tool! ... Read more

Picture this: a cool summer night, six guys sitting around a campfire, puffing on cigars, sharing a few bottles of fine Bordeaux, and telling stories of glory days gone by. After sharing dozens of stories (many of which we probably heard before), someone would always bring up The list the skills that men can not survive without. We agreed on most of the skills and fiercely debated the others, without ever reaching unanimity. Does this scene sound familiar? The book s foundation are my memories of family reunions filled with laughter and camaraderie. It is about the skills I relied on as I progressed through the various stages in my life.As you read, you will agree with some of the skills, debate others, and possibly wonder why one of your favorite skills was not included. That is okay. The purpose is for you to enjoy the experience of learning these essential skills to shape your life in a positive way. Finally, as an avid movie lover, which I acquired from my father, I end each chapter with a few of my favorite movies that correspond to the respective skill. Some you will recognize and others you might never have heard of. For the movies you haven t yet watched, go ahead and rent them. You will see why I chose them. Enjoy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars always and always
The extraordinary loveliness of this book cover can't be seen from the Amazon book product view until the book is held in one's own hand. On that upper right corner lied two siblings completely absorbing in the moment gazing at a frog, and in them I saw my brother and I in the past, I saw my own two young children today, I saw the artist Karas made this picture perfect and most essentially, I saw Issa's haiku breathing through. Issa(1763-1827), one of the most celebrated and loved haiku master, lost his mother when he was very young and he thus always had a soft spot for young children (as well as vulnerable insects) and for this, he remained to be a special inspirational poet for many. He suffered through his life first by a storybook stepmother and later the loss of his own wife and children but he filled the lack and transcended the pain with sensitivity and compassion and left this world with haiku full of surprises, innocence and elegant simplicity.

TODAY and TODAY has fully inherited ISSA's legacy and succeeded in so many ways. Eighteen of his friendly haiku were exquisitely translated and brought to life through captivating illustrations depicting a family of three generations enjoying todays through four seasons in a year. The artwork done in "rice paper, wood plank, pencil and paint" amazingly deepens the meaning of Issa's Haiku and only if I can enlarge some of them to hang on the wall to open a window of constant reminder that there were no regrets for yesterday, no worries for tomorrow but what truly matters as crystallized by this children's book are those little moments of today and today. From the miraculous cherry blossom to the starry summer sky, from golden chrysanthemums to drifting autumn moon, from grandpa's saving the kite to grandpa's empty chair...but then the spring of the new cycle has arrived again and this book with all its "unique wonder" shall make us appreciate Issa's haiku and Kara's artwork for always and always.

5-0 out of 5 stars We love this book
We love this book. The story comes from an ancient Japanese poem, which is beautiful, but maybe a little too melancholy for little kids to understand and appreciate fully. The illustrations are lovely as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bummer
Wow, what a disappointment.I kept thinking, This isn't translating well.I don't think it was the English as much as that the ideas were a bit much for my children. We do have a cherry tree, but they couldn't appreciate the poetry because they had a hard time figuring out what was going on.The "seasons" theme was distracting. It seemed like just as soon as they were getting the hang of it, the book flipped the script on them. The illustrations are lovely, so this could be a nice book for the kids to study the pictures, but definitely not a lapbook to read at bedtime. ... Product Description
Hitherto the human rights debate in Africa has concentrated on the legal and philosophical. The author, Professor of Law at the University of Dar es Salaam, here moves the debate to the social and political planes. He attempts to reconceptualise human rights ideology from the standpoint of the working people in Africa. He defines the approach as avoiding the pitfalls of the liberal perspective as being absolutist in viewing human rights as a central question and the rights struggle as the backbone of democratic struggles. The author maintains that such a study cannot be politically neutral or intellectually uncommitted. Both the critique of dominant discourse and the reconceptualisation are located within the current social science and jurisprudential debates. ... Read more

Product Description
Science education imparts a method of inquiry and a systematic way of processing knowledge about the physical world. For this reason, science education provides part of the foundation for any knowledge based effort to improve health, nutrition, family planning, environment, agriculture, and industry. Countries around the world recognize the fact that science and technology contribute to the economic prosperity and social advancement and help sustainable development of their nations. Science education has always been a priority in their education planning. Different approaches have been used to address the popularization of science and to encourage curiosity and imagination of scientific phenomena in schools and out of the school environments. However despite all these efforts school systems fail to attract enough students who could take up their career. This book brings together prominent science educators and researchers from around the world to share their contemporary knowledge about research and trends in improvement of science education and curricula. The chapters provide information on recent trends and developments, effective teaching of science in schools, innovative approaches, advanced curriculum materials and the use of learning technologies. The book will be a critical and specialized source that describes how we can foster scientific habits of mind among young students and what pedagogical knowledge can lead to best practices in science education. We need more efforts like this one, from a widening circle of contributors addressing the question of what it means to be educated scientifically and to develop scientific habits of mind. The 21st century promises to present a continuing stream of new problems demanding minds capable of addressing them.Deanna Kuhn Professor of Psychology and EducationColumbia University Teachers College, USAThis volume does much to advance the intellectual debate regarding scientific literacy within our global society. Collectively, the authors acknowledge that a full understanding of science education requires simultaneous attention to the cognitive, pedagogical, and technological dimensions of teaching and learning, as well as a focus on appropriate science content knowledge. The discussion is informed by inclusion of original research studies as well as the provision of the research bases for exemplary practices espoused by the authors.Larry G. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fostering Scientific Habits of Mind
Here comes one of those rare books who quietly turn up without fanfare or pretense and yet hold some of the most significant issues of our times on the subject of Science Education.
I was drawn at first by curiosity in this peculiar assemblage of globally well-known professors and doctors, radiating from Harvard University to Flinders ofAustralia, from CambridgeU.K. to Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, I kind of felt a potential message emanating from their collective effort.
When an erudite giant like Keith Taber gives out his thoughts, it usually initiatesan evolutionary change in our thinking habits, his mile long bio owns an array of deep-seated views on Science Education.Equallyto mention the other eminent figures involved in this book, a proven and obvious distinctiveness comes about as their common characteristic, they earned combined centuries and plus years of experience in guiding our educators around the world. For years now, these doctors and professors have been writing, and constantly speaking out, always with a sense of resolve and foresight to all the teachers, leaders and communities about the necessity of reforms and education strategies. To name some more of these academic experts involved in this book, we have ProfessorAnderson Roger from Columbia Teachers College, Professor Grotzer Tina from Harvard University, Professor Asghar Anila from The Johns Hopkins Univeristy and so on...just too many to list, but similarly influential.
This book goes to, all who go through the niggling feeling, that there ought to be more behind the conventional methods we put up with to prime our young student forthis constantlyand rapid changingtechnological and intellectualgrowth we see today all over the world;what is working in our educational system? what is not working in these archaic methods? how do we align the path of our current education styles to fulfillthe demands of a mounting global competition? This are the questions discussed, analyzed, and put forth in this book, which in its humble entry could have been easily overlooked to our detriment.
Separated by chapters, clad individually by these scholars, the deliberations go straight to the point and inevitably compel the reader to pause in reflection , as each statement heralds a renewed vista in our way of teaching. I really enjoyed reading this book, and feel duty-bound to write this review for the sake of the hundreds around the world who aspire change in a stagnant educational settingsand those who seek guidance to teach and deliver a stronger and well prepared society to our developing and fast upgrading future. ... Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Issa," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Issa in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Issa when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Issa, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
