Product Description
This book is a fresh investigation disproving the notion, popular today among certain segments of the world's religious culture, that the Russian journalist Nicholas Notovitch had definitely discovered, at an Indo-Tibetan monastery, a bona fide ancient Buddhist manuscript which allegedly described Jesus' travels to India and Central Asia before he then launched his well-know public ministry back in Israel. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Jesus between 12 and 30: Christianity Meets Buddhism?
Have you ever wondered what Jesus Christ did after His intellectual challenge to the Jewish leaders at the age of 12 and before His own ministry at the age of 30?Some feel that this 18 year gap was filled by a journey to India (and other far eastern countries). In was here, some contend, that Jesus was influenced by Buddhism and other eastern religions and philosophies.

This sounds humorous--and it should. This is because it is a laughable theory!

H. Louis Fader writes a complex book refuting the idea that Christ made his way to Far-Eastern countries (such as India, Tibet, et. al.) and was in any way influenced by Buddhist philosophies.Fader's collegiate-level book is extremely thorough. It actually reads like a doctoral theses and a detective novel. In the end, Fader sucessfully gives very compelling evidence that Nicholas Notovitch's "Lost Gospel" is nothing more than a [...]

I have given this book "4 stars."This is not because it is lacking in anything. It is because it is written for people who are above-average readers and thinkers in the areas Fader covers. This is not asserted to insult anybody's intelligence. It is stated to show that the book may be over the avererage person's head. However, those who have a genuine interest in the topic of Notovitch's "Lost Gospel" will find the book very helpful.Fader cuts no corners in proving that Christ did not receive any training from Buddhist monks in far-eastern lands.

The book may be confusing to people who do not understand Christian theology or who do not understand the debate about Christ being influence by far-eastern theology. As stated--Fader refutes the notion that Jesus made His way too far east of Israel on the map--let alone making it the whole way to India.I recommend the book to advanced readers who are seeking to learn more about the alleged relationship between Christianity and Buddhism.I do not recommend the book to novice readers who lack in knowledge about Christian and far-eastern theology. ... Product Description
This volume offers a collection of essays by a group of scholars of Arabic literature. It explores various manifestations of traditional as well as modern and postmodern themes and techniques in Arabic literature. Tripartite concepts of tradition, modernity, and postmodernity in Arabic literary works are explored and analyzed. The volume illustrates the fact that Arabic literature has kept abreast not only of the primarily modern literary movements in the West but also of the "postmodern condition". ... Read more

Product Description
Hisham Sharabi (1927-2005) was a distinguished Palestinian intellectual and an outspoken critic of traditional Arab society and culture. Despite his wealthy family and his upbringing as a member of the privileged class, his conscious self-analysis after the 1967 Arab defeat by Israel led him to radically change his former bourgeois outlook on his society and its culture.

Written in a simple language, Embers and Ashes tells of Sharabi's childhood and boyhood in Palestine, his youth and initial political activism as a university student in Lebanon, and his life and education as a graduate student in the US. He brings his newly acquired self-analysis and sociocultural criticism to bear on the story of each of these phases. As a boy happily growing up in Palestine, he observes how he was unconsciously indoctrinated in the values of his wealthy class, despite the beautiful memories he retains of his early life. In Lebanon, he observes the same imposed values and especially the authoritarian attitudes of his Arab professors at the university and of the leadership of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party he joined (although he describes in chilling detail the lamentable manner in which the Party's leader, Antun Sa'adah, with whom he was on intimate terms, was put to death by the authorities of Lebanon after a plot and a summary trial). In the United States he appreciates the freedom that his American professors allowed him in forming his own views and learning to defend them; he forms his first romantic relationships; and he observes the unbecoming behavior of some Arab students--even as he and they all hear about debacles in far-off Palestine and the Arab world.

Although Sharabi wrote many books in English and Arabic expressing his insights into the flaws of Arab societal structure, culture, and politics, it is his autobiography, Embers and Ashes: Memoirs of an Arab Intellectual, published in Arabic in 1978, that offers a candid and poignant account of his own personal formation and development. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Haiku and Tanka from the heart of a Japanese poet.
Issa's poems written about the death of his two-year old daughter and other tragedies in his life are short, concise and heart-wrenching.His poems that relate Mother nature and human nature, without a glaringly obvious connection, are well-crafted and thought-provoking.I especially enjoyed the biographical section in the beginning of the book, and the annotations accompanying many of the poems which gave me (a gaijin) a better understanding of Japanese culture and background for the poems.I highly recommend this book not only for Issa's poems but for the editor and translator's obvious knowledge of Japan, its people and customs. ... Product Description
On the surface of this novel, various members of a Moroccan family recount their versions of the family's experiences under the French Protectorate and since Independence. On a deeper level, the book deals with human memory and how it forms one's experience of the world. Some critics have found the Arabic original to be similar to Proust's Remembrance of Things Past. Outstanding Moroccan novelist and critic Mohamed Berrada first published Lu'bat al-Nisyan in 1987, and it has since been translated into French and Spanish. Called the first postmodern novel in Arabic, the story is written in such a captivating style that it has become a bestseller in the Arab world. Apart from its postmodern modes of narration and metafictional structure, the novel has elements of an autobiographical nature. Hadi, his mother, brother and other characters subtly portray the lives experienced by people from various classes and different backgrounds. The narrator and the narrator's narrator take these nuances and struggle with how a story, any story, should be told. Change in Moroccan culture and in the psyche of the main protagonist is painted artfully by the encircling wealth of detail. ... Read more
