Product Description
1929. Supernaturalism runs like a scarlet thread through the whole Christians' Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Many a Christian today passes hastily over the miracle stories in the Scriptures and dwells with greater satisfaction on the less spectacular portrayal of men's moral ideals and spiritual struggles abundantly recorded in his sacred book. Why did the advocates of the new religion concern themselves so extensively with the imagery of supernaturalism? To answer this question is the purpose of the present volume. Contents: age of supernaturalism; visibility of spirits; media of revelation; heroic redeemers; suppliant humanity; protection for society; help for the individual; destiny of the soul; fate of the mind. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars AN OFTEN-OVERLOOKED EARLY 20TH CENTURY "LIFE OF JESUS"
Shirley Jackson Case (1872-1947; Shirley is a MALE, by the way) was a member of the Florida Southern College faculty, and author of various books.

In a sense, this 1927 book is a sequel to Case's 1912 book The Historicity of Jesus, "in which the contentions of those who deny his existence were subjected to careful examination."He begins the book by noting, "The following pages have been written with a single purpose in mind. They seek to depict Jesus as he actually appeared to the men of his own time in Palestine nineteen hundred years ago."

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"That the canonical gospels are true history because apostles sponsor their content is also a proposition of doubtful validity. The books themselves contain no explicit information about the identity of their several authors..."
"Incidental references to the later astonishment felt by kindred and former neighbors when they learned of his public activities may be meant to indicate that his previous manner of life had been entirely conventional and provocative of no comment."
"Had Jesus been called upon for self-classification in the interests of indicating the type of task to which he had set himself, updoubtedly the word 'prophet' would have been the first to spring to his lips."
"In the capacity of teacher he was pre-eminently a Jewish figure, while the hero was more suitable to gentile tastes."
"Yet the renunciation demanded by Jesus certainly was not of the morbid, ascetic type.He and his followers enjoyed God's sunshine, they delighted in the fields and the flowers, they saw the goodness of the Almighty displayed all about them, and they regarded it as entirely proper to live happily and joyfully at the present moment."
"Jesus inculcated ideals that were practically impossible of literal realization in the present."

This book, though somewhat "dated," remains of interest to those interested in the historical Jesus, New Testament studies, and biblical criticism.

4-0 out of 5 stars Would Have Been A great Novel.
I only wish jackson would have lived long enough to finish this novel. It is great, and I am glad that her husband published it. It should not be set on fire, that is a very ignorant thing to say. Just because we do notunderstand, or dislike something, does not mean we destroy it. Didn't yourmother teach you anything?Everyone who is a fan of Jackson, do read herlast work. SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY 241 INDEX 251 PREFACE This book sketches the first eight centuries of Christian itys history an old story told in a new way. The Christian movement is presented in terms of the living people who constituted its membership and who were especially promi nent in giving it direction and continuity. Thus history is depicted as a process of life. Visiting cemeteries to decipher old tombstones may satisfy a morbid curiosity, but excursions among the dead are a poor substitute for personal companionship with the living. His torical study has too often been a sepulchral discipline. It has consisted in gleaning dates and proper names from an cient documents treated as if they were cemetery inscriptions. In the present volume an effort has been made to walk with the people of the past upon their own highways, to feel the realities they felt in life, and to participate sympathetically in the tasks that engaged their attention. It is this emphasis that gives to the present volume its distinctiveness. The needs of the layman have been kept definitely in mind. He may read as he runs. There are no footnotes to halt his progress or deflect his interest. But this book may also be used as a textbook for class study. The appended Selected Bibliography furnishes suggestions for further reading on the subject matter of each chapter. A course of study adapted to the needs of various groups may easily be set up by grading the supplementary reading according to the needs of the students. The story of Christianitys past, vi PREFACE whether studied in church schools, colleges, or seminaries, will become much more attractive when approached from the biographical point of view, S. J. C. The Divinity School The University of Chicago My 27, 1934 INTRODUCTION Man is a great builderj he has been a maker of many things. At the very dawn of history he appeared in this aggressive role. He devised crude instruments to aid him in his quest for food and shelter. By whirling a wooden drill, or striking sparks from hard flint, he invented fire to cook his food and warm his habitation. Applying his constructive skill in the arts of agriculture and navigation, he slowly subjected both land and sea to his will. In the long course of the centuries he has built roads, invented en gines, bridged rivers, tunneled mountains, conquered the air, organized vast industries, accumulated fabulous wealth, and bound continent to continent with telegraph cables, radio communication, and globe-encircling routes of com merce. Slowly but surely he has mastered mightily his physical environment. Man is also a builder of culture. The invention of lan guage, together with the art of writing and printing, has made possible the preservation of knowledge accumulating from generation to generation and its dissemination over the face of the earth... ...
