Editorial Review

Product Description
This volume contains a fresh English translation of Josephus' apologetic treatise "Against Apion", based on the new critical text established by H. Schreckenberg. It also provides the first English commentary on this treatise, with comprehensive treatment of the historical, literary, and rhetorical features of Josephus' most engaging literary product. "Against Apion" contains the most important evidence for hostility to Judeans in antiquity, as Josephus responds to both Egyptian and Hellenistic slurs on the Judean people, their origins and character. Josephus' robust defense of his people, with his striking account of the Judean constitution ("theocracy"), also constitutes the finest example of Judean apologetics from antiquity. The commentary will provide a richly-documented resource for the many readers of this treatise - those who study and teach early Judaism, early Christianity, and the cultural politics of antiquity. It also offers the first "postcolonial" reading of Josephus, in his attempt to present his Judean tradition under the cultural hegemony of the Greek intellectual tradition and the political power of Rome. ... Product Description
It is fatal to show pity in a time of war. Led by the mighty Titus, the Roman army besieges Jerusalem. Arrows rain over the city day and night, and battering rams assault its defensive walls. Inside, the people curse their fate, resistant to the last but maddened by hunger. After days of rebellion, at last their city falls. The citizens plead for mercy but as the Romans march on the Temple of Masada, the most sacred sanctuary of the Jewish people, flaming torches blaze above their heads. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling, highly readable history
This is a concise (102 pages) excerpt of the writings of Josephus about the Jewish War in AD 70 against Titus of Rome. It depicts what happened in Jerusalem about 40 years after the time of Jesus.

Every now and then, you pick up a book to read for whatever reason, and find something in it so valuable you wish everyone would read it. I was curious to read some Josephus because there had been so many references to his (extra-biblical) writings in my Bible classes at Biola. This slim volume was the only thing my bookstore had of his work, so I bought it.

The horrors of war and the folly of man's pride are so vividly depicted in this book...it has such an immediate feel and modern style to it that you don't feel the usual disconnect of the centuries that have passed. Josephus paints the visuals for your mind and you experience the tragedy of this sad tale along with him. The violence is very intense and heartbreaking. This story is completely relevant today, and bears proof that mankind has not changed.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in Roman, Jewish, or Biblical history. It is easy to read and understand, but does contain graphic, war-related violence. There is only one short paragraph as an explanatory note so you may want to seek more background information elsewhere. The length makes it great for a quick, fulfilling read. ... Read more

Product Description
This book offers a comprehensive study of the Sicarii in Josephus s Judean War. Detailed rhetorical analyses are provided not only for the Masada narrative, where Josephus tells how the Sicarii famously committed suicide, but also for all other places in War where their activities are described or must be inferred from the context. The study shows how Josephus adopted the Sicarii in his narrative to develop and bring to a resolution several major themes in War. In a departure from the classical proposal that the Sicarii were an armed and fanatical off-shoot of the Zealots, this work concludes that from a historical perspective, Sicarii was a somewhat fluid term used to describe Jews of the Judean revolt who were associated with acts of violence against their own people for religious/political ends. ...
