Product Description

An excerpt:

John Keats came of undistinguished parentage. No biographer carries his pedigree further than his maternal grandfather, or alleges that there was any trace, however faint or remote, of ancestral eminence. The maternal grandfather was a Mr. Jennings, who kept a large livery-stable, called the Swan and Hoop, in the Pavement, Moorfields, London, opposite the entrance to Finsbury Circus. The principal stableman or assistant in the business was named Thomas Keats, of Devonshire or Cornish parentage. He was a well-conducted, sensible, good-looking little man, and won the favour of Jennings’s daughter, named Frances or Fanny: they married, and this rather considerable rise in his fortunes left Keats unassuming and manly as before. He appears to have been a natural gentleman. Jennings was a prosperous tradesman, and might have died rich (his death took place in 1805) but for easy-going good-nature tending to the gullible. Mrs. Keats seems to have been in character less uniform and single-minded than her husband. She is described as passionately fond of amusement, prodigal, dotingly attached to her children, more especially John, much beloved by them in return, sensible, and at the same time saturnine in demeanour: a personable tall woman with a large oval face. Her pleasure-seeking tendency probably led her into some imprudences, for her first baby, John, was a seven months’ child.[13]

John Keats was born at the Moorfields place of business on the 31st of October 1795. This date of birth is established by the register of baptisms at St. Botolph’s, Bishopsgate: the date usually assigned, the 29th of October, appears to be inaccurate, though Keats himself, and others of the family, believed in it. There were three other children of the marriage—or four if we reckon a a son who died in infancy:

Product Description

From the introduction by Philip Levine:

Walter Jackson Bate, in his biography of Keats, has writers, critics, readers, have approached Keats during the last century, on one quality in his writing they have been completely united.

They have all been won by an economy and power of phrase excelled only by Shakespeare." This poet whose greatest ambition was to he "among the English poets" is not only preeminent among those of the past, but for well over a century he has continued to be the yardstick by which those who have written poetry in our language can measure their success. He remains a wellspring to which all of us might go to refresh our belief in the value of this art.

Product Description
Keats stands as a prophetic prelude to many of today's radical attempts at self- and cultural-transformation. But this side of Keats is rarely recognized. He is remembered mainly as a Romantic poet whose stature was magnified by his early death. Eclipsed by the lush sensuality of his poems, the real meaning of his life and the true greatness of his poetic achievement - how we make sense of our experience - has been largely misunderstood.

"Book of the Heart" grasps the core of Keats's poetic practice of life. It uncovers the path of knowledge that his letters reveal. In a moving and imaginative literary achievement, Rodríguez presents Keats as a hero of the heart, whose deep experience of life directed him in a unique way toward love, suffering, death, and creativity.

"Book of the Heart" is part of the "Studies in Imagination" series from Lindisfarne Books. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Forging of Keats's Soul
The book functions both as a biography of Keats and as a story of a person in the process of "the Great Work"--the forging of a soul/identity. Not only was Keats a great poet, he also had remarkable things to say in his letters about death, love, beauty, and salvation.

I gave it four stars instead of five because I felt that some chapters had less to offer than others, but overall the book gave me a greater appreciation for Keats's life and work, and it also gave me inspiration for my own living life poetically.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exploration of the Real Keates
Andres Rodriguez is clearly very passionate about Literature and the influence Keates had upon his own generation and those that would follow. This book reviews and examines not only the poems of Keates but what could be argued to be even more important in the understanding of the man, his letters. The very mention of John Keates conjures up images of everything related to the "Romantics," however, Rodriguez successfully pays tribute to Keates "the author" instead of Keates as a member of the "Romantic Period." This book would be interesting to both avid fans of Keates and those who are taking their first approach in studying the genius.

5-0 out of 5 stars A memorable and illuminating book
This is a memorable and illuminating book, making accessible to the general reader the treasures to be found in Keats's letters as well as his poetry. One of the remarkable things about this book is its emphasis on Keats's understanding of the healing powers of imagination and of poetry. Many, many years ago, my favorite English teacher told me that she hoped to write a book about Keats's letters.I remember wondering how a book about anyone's letters could be interesting, and hoped someday to see her book. She never wrote it, alas-- so it was a wonderful discovery to find in Andres Rodriguez's book some of the depths that my long-ago mentor had hoped to plumb. Don't be fooled by the negative review titled "fooled again"-- this is an unusual and beautiful book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fooled Again
I purchased this book based on the editorial reviews.
Well, I've been fooled again and again by glowing MOVIE reviews, but this is a first for me in literature. This is a badly written book. My one star recommendation is for you to purchase the book (it is inexpensive) to make your own judgment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable reminder of two things.
The two lessons of this book: yes, Americans can fight and win guerilla wars; and yes, the Imperial Japanese really did deserve to lose.

Of course, if you use "employs torture" as your sole criterion to determine whether a power is evil, you get interesting results -- but that doesn't establish that they are necessarily _inaccurate_ results. "A plague on both your houses" (or "on both your houses but one of them more than the other") is an appropriate sentiment more often than you'd think...

Still, for this book itself: very heartily recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Hulq
Hey, this a fascinating bit of history that seems to have been largely forgotten. Col. Fertig is considered the "Father of the U S Special Forces," which he helped to set up at Ft Bragg after WW II.If you like "behind the lines" war stories, here is a real one that's hard to beat.
It must have been difficult to write about the Mindanao events so long after they occurred.Keats has done a good job, but I agree the book needed more editing.
I'm presenting the history of Fertig's Mindanao Guerrillas to a literary group.I have checked the facts of Keats' book against several official records and the book is reasonably accurate.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting - WW2 Gorilla Warfare In Mindanao, Philippines
Interesting story of Colonel Fertig who did not surrender with other Americans in 1942, but fought on in Mindanao. It is a story how he met Filippino gorillas and organized them on that island. There are not many stories of combat - it was mostly just ambushing Japanese patrols. It is mostly a story of Colonel Fertig's efforts to organize them and keep them supplied. And the book contains many stories of the people themselves. This was of personal interest to me since several of my wife's aunts and uncles died hiding from the Japanese in Mindanao.I wondered why people were so afraid of the Japanese occupation forces. This book answered those questions with stories of Japanese sadistic cruelty towards civilians.

I took off 1 star because the book is needlessly wordy. It could easily been 1/3 shorter. It is written as a novel more than a biography.Although essentially true, some fiction seems to have been added to tell the story in this manor, and to capture the spirit of that time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truth is better than fiction
I picked this book up because I had read about General Fertig in several of W. E. B. Griffin's Marine series books. He seemed to be an interesting character and he is / was.The reality of his work in the Philippines was better that Griffin's version of it.I enjoyed this book, like all of the War in the Philippines books I've picked up.Fertig just didn't want to surrender and didn't.He had a Navy chief and an Army Captain Hedges with him most of the war.He started out small, expanded, and ended up with almost no troops. In early 1944, a new Japanese General took over Mindanao and was doing a good job of driving out the guerrillas, but other areas needed reinforcements, so this didn't last long.Fertig's nemesis was a fellow guerrilla leader named Morgan. He didn't' administrate well, and was basically a patriotic bandit. He was eventually sent to Australia to see MacArthur. MacArthur and / or his henchmen didn't want anything to do with Guerrillas in the Philippines at all, but since they were there, they eventually got help.Fertig did a great job of administrating the island. The local leaders worked well with him and vice versa. It kind of figures that when the American's finally landed they were disliked more than the Japs were.I picked this up at the Wichita Public Library.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Generals point of view
This is the story of the Guerrilla war waged against the "Hapons" on the island of Mindano during WW2, as an armchair student of Insurgency and Guerrilla Warfare I've read just about everything I can find on the subject... Yank Levy, Che Guevara, Giap etc. This book showed me a side of an insurgent war that the others had overlooked... Leadership.

When the convention American forces on the Phillipines colapsed many Filipinos started their own resistance organisations, Fertig had a hard time ensuring their loyality to his leadership, in particular I found the struggle between Morgan and Fertig interesting and I feel I learned a couple of important lessons on leadership by reading this book. Morgans challenge to Fertigs leadership developed into a life or death struggle for Fertig and how he was able to deal with the threat without killing Morgan makes for good reading.

This book also does a good job of showing the importance of external support during a guerrilla conflict.

Its not often a book of this type can be entertaining and informative but this books does a very good job.

Product Description
This is an entirely new selection of Keats's finest poetry containing all his best known work as well as a sample of less familiar pieces.Keats published three volumes of poetry before his death at age twenty-five of tuberculosis and, while many of his contemporaries were prompt to recognize his greatness, snobbery and political hostility led the Tory press to vilify and patronize him as a "Cockney poet."Financial anxieties and the loss of those he loved most had tried him persistently, yet he dismissed the concept of life as a vale of tears and substituted the concept of a "vale of Soul-making."His poetry and his remarkable letters reveal a spirit of questing vitality and profound understanding and his final volume, which contains the great odes and the unfinished Hyperion, attests to an astonishing maturity of power. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "A thing of beauty is a joy forever"
There are many collections of Keats' poetry, of course, but this is the one that introduced me to his radiant work. From early poems such as the naive but sustained dream of "Endymion," to the luxuriant & sensual "Eve of Saint Agnes," to the great odes & his unfinished "Hyperion," the astonishing range of this tragically short-lived poet is presented with short but useful annotations. It's still difficult to believe that such a young man could create so much lapidary beauty in such a short time! In addition to all the major poems, there's a small selection of his letters, which are even more emotionally intense & raw than his poems. The introduction by editor Paul de Man gives an astute & perceptive overview of Keat's work.

Of all the Romantic poets, Keats seems to exemplify their aspirations & vision most beautifully. Even his apprentice work is already rich, detailed, melodic & flowing -- so much so that it's easy to overlook its very real philosophical underpinnings. But there's substance beneath the visually stunning style, a sense of the tragic dimension of life, and a constant grappling with transcendental questions. In a contemporary world that celebrates the crass & the lowest common denominator, we realize that beauty is revolutionary, never more needed than now. And there is no better place to find it than in the poetry of John Keats. If you have any sensitivity & longing for life-transforming art, his work is indispensible!

Product Description
This is the father and the almost universal source, whether acknowledged or not, of all subsequent biographies of that heroic personality so inaptly referred to as 'poor Keats.' Richard Monckton Milnes, who afterwards became Lord Houghton, was only a boy of eleven when Keats died and did not frequent the same circles as the poet, but when he was on a visit to Walter Savage Landor, Houghton met with Charles Browne, who had been an intimate friend of Keats in his Hampstead days. Mr Browne had, himself, planned a biography of Keats but abandoned it when he determined to emigrate to New Zealand. His accumulated material he handed over to Houghton, but the latter spent eight years collecting further material, documentary and by the way of personal recollections and eye-witnesses, and the book, as it finally appeared, is substantially a portrait of Keats as he appeared to his contemporaries, authenticated by a large collection of the poet's original letters and literary notes,. The present edition has a note on the letters by Lewis Gibbs. ... Read more
