Product Description
The most delightful and magical of Shakespeare's comedies, A Midsummer Night's Dream was an instant success with its Elizabethan audiences and critics, who were particularly entertained by the broad comedy of the tradesmen and the jokes and tricks of the fairy kingdom. One measure of the play's popularity has been its value to other poets and playwrights as a model for imitation and a source for borrowing.

In this volume, the Introduction describes the critical response to A Midsummer Night's Dream from around 1598 to the present day, while the documentary section runs from 1775 to 1920 and includes work by British, American, and European critics. This includes eighty five separate items, providing a comprehensive review of the critical literature. Contents include: The criticism of Malone, Steevens, Schlegel, Hazlitt, Coleridge, Ruskin, Taine, Dowden, Swinburne, Shaw, Brandes, Beerbohm, Chesterton, Bjornson and Croce. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic children's story of triumph over fear.
I read this to my children and it is one story they always remember and talk about.Richard Kennedy does not write down to children. This makes his books equally enjoyable for adults to read. This story trulyfrightened us as we read it, but the young hero faces his fears and keepshis wits about him, and the human spirit triumphs over the monster. A wordof caution: this storycould be a bit too scary for a young, easilyfrightened child. ... Read more

We had made a stage of sixteen miles in seven hours in the morning; that is to say, first bugle a quarter to one o'clock, march atTO ADVANCE. 23two o'clock, and arrival after nine o'clock, — a weary journey! Happy for those who had slept through the day; I had not. The bugle sounded, the line formed, and we marched at nine o'clock, and travelled till midnight, a distance under eight miles. We were told that the advanced columns were close to us, and we saw the fires of their pickets; and a line was assigned us to stretch our weary limbs on the ground, and snatch the brief repose allowed until daybreak, when we were again to advance. Scarcely, however, had we made ourselves as comfortable as a military cloak on the bare heath, with a stone for a pillow, would allow, —and many a tune have I less enjoyed a luxurious bed, with all the voluptuous appliances of repose, than I now blessed, my mother earth below, and the canop... ... Product Description
One of the most enduring characters in Thomas Wolfe's fiction is Francis Starwick, the midwestern aesthete who befriends Eugene Gant at Harvard in Wolfe's second autobiographical novel, Of Time and the River. In the process of organizing Wolfe's massive manuscript for publication, however, editor Maxwell Perkins deleted some of the analyses of Starwick's behavior and several of the episodes involving Eugene and Starwick. The result was that the relationship between the two young men was not as fully developed as Wolfe had originally planned.Richard S. Kennedy discovered these excised passages among the Wolfe papers at Harvard University's Houghton Library. In The Starwick Episodes he has arranged them sequentially and indicated their position in the original manuscript. In one of them Starwick introduces Eugene to Joyce's Ulysses, and in another he takes him to view the paintings in Boston's Museum of Fine arts.Additional scenes find the two exploring the lower depths of Paris until at length their true sexual natures are revealed in a visit to a Parsian brothel.Kennedy's research also uncovered the story of the life of Kenneth Raisbeck, the young man whom Wolfe used as the starting point for his fictional creation of Starwick. In his Introduction, Kennedy describes Raisbeck's career, both its brilliant promise and its tragic end, and his similarity to the character in the novel. ...
