Product Description
Ephemeral lives, and souls lost in the tattered fabric of war, displacement, and ruined love find hope, redemption, and a common voice in Eugene Gloria's artful concoction of American and Filipino vernaculars. While some of these thirty poems deal with the landscape and folkways of contemporary Filipinos, others locate themselves on the streets and byways of present-day America. Like many poets of dual heritage, Gloria's work is concerned with self-definition, with the attempt to reconcile a feeling of exile and homelessness. Frequently taking the form of character studies and first-person narratives, Gloria's poems poignantly illuminate the common man's search for connection to the self and to the world.

"Eugene Gloria's Drivers at the Short-Time Motel is propelled by an imagistic sincerity and paced lyricism. Each poem seems to embody the plain-spoken as well as the embellishments that we associate with classical and modern Asian poetry. Though many of the poems address the lingering hurt of cultural and economic imperialism, worlds coexist in the same skin through magical imagery. Gauged by a keen eye, history is scrutinized, but through a playful exactness. These wonderful poems are trustworthy." --Yusef Komunyaaka ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Words from A Promising New Talent
This was a challenging book of poems to read. It maps out an intelligent and complex world--the bicultural experience. Nostalgic and unidealistic, here is a Filipino-American voice struggling through the painful, alwaysimportant memories attached to contrasting landscapes--those of the U.S.and the Philippines. My favorite poems were those that dealt with thespeaker's immediate family. And though the language is beautiful in many ofthe poems, what really strikes hard is the honesty with which speaker tellshis (and his family's) stories.

Product Description
Willis Barnstone's third book of memoirs begins with his childhood and ends with his brother's death in 1987. A central theme is labels--names, ethnicities, all distinctions that cause suspicion, anger, and destruction.

Barnstone speaks as a Jew who has from early in his life shared parallel experiences with African Americans. He dwells on his own experience of "passing," already present in the name Barnstone, a name changed before his birth to conceal--or not to advertise--that he was a Jew, which might affect admission to private schools and college, his integration into society, and his professional life. But the price of dissembling was self-deprecation, fear of rejection, and guilt. Barnstone makes the analogy to the African American experience explicit. He speaks of his black step-grandmother, of childhood playmates, of the activist Bayard Rustin and the turbulent and exhilarating integration of his Quaker boarding school, of his first publication--a letter to The Nation--protesting the racial and religious exclusionary practices of the Bowdoin fraternities, of being a soldier with blacks in the segregated South, and of the 18th-century slave memoirist Olaudah Equiano.

Finally, there is a dialogue with Yusef Komunyakaa and a small selection of Komunyakaa's Jewish Bible poems. We Jews and Blacks is also a dramatic and whimsical literary memoir. It contains a number of Barnstone's poems, which give a second view of an event, a crystallization of his thinking. Both sorrowful and joyful, Barnstone's memoir is a fresh and significant contribution to American letters. ... Read more

Excerpt: (2) Rayburn's voice and mannerisms as well as his political philosophy and even his religious affiliation were said to mirror those of his mentor, Earl Kemp Long. (3) Rayburn was perhaps the staunchest legislative defender of the Louisiana charity hospital system and worked to bring such a facility to Bogalusa. (4) The Rayburn School of Veterinary Science in Baton Rouge honors his commitment to the establishment of the Louisiana State University's School of Veterinary Medicine, the only in the state. (5) Rayburn was known unofficially as the "Dean of the Louisiana Senate". Benjamin Burras Rayburn, Sr., known as B. B. "Sixty" Rayburn (August 11, 1916 - March 5, 2008), was a veteran politician from Bogalusa, an incorporated city in Washington Parish in southeastern Louisiana in the United States. He was a firm supporter of the region's public hospitals, highways, and its indigenous Southeastern Louisiana University. He served as a populist Democrat in both houses of the Louisiana State Legislature from 1948-1996. Rayburn's political roots were imbedded in the administrations of Governor Earl Kemp Long, but he was also friendly with later chief executives John J. McKeithen and Edwin Washington Edwards. Even his loud and raspy voice was often compared to that of Earl Long. Rayburn survived generations of social and political change in his adopted home state, including the collapse of legal segregation as well as the rise of women and...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=16311357 ...
