Read more

Auszug: Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell, 1st Baron Baden-Powell (pronounced ) OM, GCMG, GCVO, KCB (22 February 1857 - 8 January 1941), also known as B-P or Lord Baden-Powell, was a lieutenant-general in the British Army, writer, and founder of the Scout Movement. After having been educated at Charterhouse School, Baden-Powell served in the British Army from 1876 until 1910 in India and Africa. In 1899, during the Second Boer War in South Africa, Baden-Powell successfully defended the town in the Siege of Mafeking. Several of his military books, written for military reconnaissance and scout training in his African years, were also read by boys. Based on those earlier books, he wrote Scouting for Boys, published in 1908 by Pearson, for youth readership. During writing, he tested his ideas through a camping trip on Brownsea Island with the local Boys' Brigade and sons of his friends that began on 1 August 1907, which is now seen as the beginning of Scouting. A Short but Touching Tribute to a Great Man
Published on the centennial of Janusz Korczak's birth, in 1978, this book is a short but fitting tribute to a great man, a hero in Poland and Israel - along with most of Europe and parts of Latin America - but virtually forgotten in the United States.Although Korczak trained to be a pediatrician, it is as an advocate for children and children's rights that he found his calling. He founded an orphanage, in which he took in the children nobody wanted.Always believing in the dignity and abilities of these - and all children, he instituted his own special pedagogical approach to raising and educating these children, winning the respect and admiration of children and peers alike. In the dark years when the ominous clouds of Nazism cast their shadows over his beloved Warsaw, he created a radio show in which he assumed the persona of The Old Doctor to disguise his Jewish identity. His mask, however, did not last long, and he was banished from the air waves. The following year, all of Warsaw's Jews were herded into the infamous ghetto.Having been forced to give up his original orphanage, he started a new one in the Ghetto. In a valiant effort to afford the ghetto children a semblance of normalcy and dignity, he nurtured all who came to him. Finally, on August 4, 1942, barely a week beyond his 64th birthday, he was among the group ordered to board the train to the Treblinka death camp.He had been offered safe passage out of the ghetto, but repeatedly refused, saying that one does not abandon a sick child. With quiet dignity, he and nearly 200 of his orphans marched to the train that would take them to Treblinka. He was never heard of again.

This book, relying primarily on Hanna Olczak's account, gives an overview of this man's life and many accomplishments.Though it is not nearly as detailed as Betty Jean Lifton's "The King of Children," this book does the man justice. It also offers a unique Polish perspective. And for someone like myself, who so deeply admires this great and gentle man, this book is a precious keepsake. ...
