Product Description
Webster's edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of synonyms and antonyms for difficult and often ambiguous English words that are encountered in other works of literature, conversation, or academic examinations. Extremely rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority in the notes compared to words which are ¿difficult, and often encountered¿ in examinations. Rather than supply a single synonym, many areprovided for a variety of meanings, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of the English language, and avoid using the notes as a pure crutch. Having the reader decipher a word's meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. If a difficult word is not noted on a page, chances are that it has been highlighted on a previous page. A more complete thesaurus is supplied at the end of the book; synonyms and antonyms are extracted from Webster's Online Dictionary.

Product Description
Sidney Lanier (1842-1881) was an American musician and poet. He began playing the flute at an early age, and his love of that musical instrument continued throughout his life. His most famous poems were Corn (1875), The Symphony (1875), Centennial Meditation (1876), The Song of the Chattahoochee (1877), The Marshes of Glynn (1878), and Sunrise (1881). The latter two poems are generally considered his greatest works. They are part of an unfinished set of lyrical nature poems known as the Hymns of the Marshes, which describe the vast, open salt marshes of Glynn County on the coast of Georgia. Late in his life, Lanier became a student, lecturer, and, finally, a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, specializing in the works of the English novelists, Shakespeare, the Elizabethan sonneteers, Chaucer, and the Anglo-Saxon poets. Lanier developed a unique style of poetry written in logaoedic dactyls, which was strongly influenced by the works of his beloved Anglo- Saxon poets. He wrote several of his greatest poems in this meter, including Revenge of Hamish (1878), The Marshes of Glynn, and Sunrise. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
A strange blend of first-hand Civil War reporting, German romanticism, and philosophy, Sidney Lanier's early and only novel has long been out of print except in the costly Centennial Edition of the Works of Sidney Lanier. Tiger-Lilies is important as a reflection of both Lanier's activities from his graduation from Oglethorpe University in 1860 until the end of the Civil War and his inner life of literature and thought. Much of the novel is distilled recollection of his own experiences: the early portion is set in the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee and recalls the summer vacation spent in the hotel owned by his grandfather; the second large section is a fictional retelling of incidents in his wartime history, his carefree days as a signalman stationed on Burwell's Bay, his adventures in fighting Yankee raiders, and his dreary days as a prisoner of war at Camp Lookout. Biographers and critics have been so concerned with the poet Lanier was later to become that any intrinsic interest of the novel itself has been obscured. Tiger-Lilies contains much of interest to the student of Southern literature and the student of nineteenth-century romance and realism in American fiction. ... Read more

It cannot be quite well that the multitudes of other stars which beam down through the daylight should be utterly blotted out from our senses and our thoughts. Somehow the starlight has never mixed in trade; it has never become so commonplace as the sunlight. At any rate, it is mathematically certain that he who forgets the stars that shine at noonday loses half the universe. Now in proposing to examine with some detail that brilliant Elizabethan period which may well be called the high noon of English letters, I invite you first to study with me a number of poets who have been for the majority of people as utterly drowned out of sight in the overpowering fame of Shakspere as are the stars in yonder sky at this moment. I think, as I call over some names, how remote they are from the daily life of our time: think of Henry Howard, of Wyatt, of the two Vauxs, of that delicious Henry Constable, of Bartholomew Griffin, of Nicholas Breton, of Lyly, of Giles and Phineas Fletcher, of Peele, Greene, Marlowe, Lodge, Edwards, Nicholson, Sack- ville, Gascoigne, Barnfield, Daniel, Raleigh, Sidney, Lady Mary Wroth... ...
