3-0 out of 5 stars Wow, blast from the past!
My dad and I used this to experiment, back in the '70s -- '80s when I was 10-18. I still remember some recipes from those times: ribs hung in a hot oven, Star Anise Chicken. I actually found a copy in a used book store and picked up a copy. Some very nice basic techniques, although tastes have changed for many people (away from as much salt/sodium, and so on.) ... Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
Western literary study flows out of eighteenth-century works by Alexander Pope, Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, Frances Burney, Denis Diderot, Johann Gottfried Herder, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. Experience the birth of the modern novel, or compare the development of language using dictionaries and grammar discourses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Help, Useful,Lacking in Some Areas
I had never used SparkNotes before, but I felt that some help would be useful in explaining the symbolism of To Kill a Mockingbird.I had read it a few years earlier and had only taken the story in, not the deeper meaning the author intended. At the outset, the constant themes and symbols are explained, though not in very much detail. Then summaries of the chapters are included, though this would only be useful to someone that hadn't read the book as they are just summaries, nothing more. These "notes" would be helpful to someone reading for pleasure and wanting to understand the symbolism. It would be invaluable to someone in high school or college needing to review the chapters to write an essay, or need to understand the symbolism for discussions. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars To Kill a Mockingbird
the copy I received had a signature on the fly page, which was indicated when I purchased it.However, there were underlines and comments throughout the book which were a bit distracting. However, the book itself deserved every award it received!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tightly written with a message for everyone
Harper Lee was encouraged to write some of her childhood memories. What in the beginning seems like the story of three childhood friends in depression era Macomb, Alabama, turns out to be packed with insights to the makeup of human kind.

This story is intriguing on many levels from the history of the area to the stereotyping of people. Most of all every turn was a surprise as told in the first person from the view of Scout Finch. And instead of telling the story in a six year old vocabulary she uses an exceptionally large repertoire to describe the people and events. This story is not as slow passed as one may guess from first glance as every remark and every action will be needed for a future action.

A major controversial part of the story is the trial of Tom Robinson. Hoverer this is just a catalyst to help Scout understand the nature of people including her father Atticus and you will find that as important as it is it is just a part of the story with other major characters such as Arthur "Boo" Radley.

Even thought it appears that Scout is the recipient of the insights, I believe we the reader is the real recipient.

I can truly say that this book has changed my outlook in life.

Product Description

Set in the small Southern town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the Depression, this story follows three years in the life of eight-year-old Scout Finch, her brother, Jem, and their father, Atticus. The three years are punctuated by the arrest and eventual trial of a young black man accused of raping a white woman. The result is a tough and tender novel of race, class, justice, and the pain of growing up, all through the eyes of a young girl. Robert Mulligan directed the film adaptation, which won an Oscar for best script (Horton Foote) and best actor (Gregory Peck).

5-0 out of 5 stars There are some relly good role models for teens in this book
I thought his book was extra-ordinary. The characters are so interestingand complex. Harper Lee is a brilliant writer and really brought thislittle southern town to life with her descriptions of the town and the people in the town. She has a vocabulary to die for. I have to say my favorite character is Scout because she is so innocent and really wantstoknow what is going on but can't quite get the clue. She is soadorable andshe knows who she is and how she thinks she should act andshe doesn'tbother herself by responding to the snotty remarks of MissStephanie. Thisbook is really amazing and I would recomend it to anyonethat is lookingfor a good read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for nativeamericans or english talking people, but..
Why all this strange words? I have no problem what so ever with theEnglish language, but this book, have a lot of slang that is not so easy totranslate. I don't say it's a bad or anything but..My classmates didactually agree with me when I said it was too difficult to understand. Hey,I'm from Sweden, and the english we learn in school is NOT the samelanguage that English people talk, or write for that matter. Well, HarperLee is one of the better authors that I can think of and To kill amockingbird is kind of a great book if you learn to understand all theslang that follows. Thank you! ... Read more
