For quite some time critics have been intrigued by the unique rhetorical strategies of Heinrich Heine's and Giacomo Leopardi's narratives. This book breaks new ground in the field of Heine and Leopardi scholarship by providing a critical analysis of similarities between the rhetorical strategies of Heinrich Heine's text Ludwig Berne. Eine Denkschrift and Giacomo Leopardi's 'Il Cantico del Gallo Silvestre' and the midrashic process. In their texts, Heine and Leopardi interweave biblical references, historical events, and personal encounters with their narrative and juxtapose them to a contemporary situation, thus presenting the reader with their interpretation of an existential experience. These narratives are midrashic in inviting multiple interpretations of equal validity. In an age imbued with optimism, Heine and Leopardi discredit the whole tradition of the eschatological messianic message of redemption and negate the Enlightenment's belief in the renewal of society. ... Exegitical Intrigue
In the Rhetoric of Midrash, many different exegetical methods are employed to derive deeper meaning from a text. It is an exegitical tradition implicated by pre-Talmudic prescriptions that through a flourish of esoteric imprecations allows the reader to become acquainted with the log of meanings that intersect within a given pasage of the Tanakh (the Hebrew Bible). How are Heinrich Heine and Giacomo Leopardi, a German classicist and an Italian philologist, associated with this rhetorical strategy, or shall we say archeological intervention? Delia Fabbroni-Giannotti Nisbet assimilates the two world literary giants and by way of explicit and close readings of Heine's tales and Leopardi's fables, implicates their existential briefings in inspiring ways. I must admit my scepticism upon picking up this book, a sholarly work that may evoke nostalgia for the broad and tout court assessments which have punctuated the Modernist mindscape. The diction is technical but not abstruse, the allusions to Medieval Jewish scholars is usually offered as an aside, but by dissonance frustrating because the notes are not as helpful as one should wish. However the focus of the work manages to stay faithful to a mindfulness that sustains a diaogue with the two great poets so as to disinter the buried meanings that have been silenced in respect to Heine, and reiterate the rhetorical suppleness and agility that characterizes a fables of Leopardi and particularly the "Cantic of the Sylvan Cock", which appropriates a significance within the text equal to that of Heine's "Ludwig Beorne. Eine Denkshrift." Essentially we find an existential crisis that operates on several fronts, although the adoption of language in its most expressive folds is left undiscussed by Delia Fabbroni-Giannotti Nisbet. If we are to understand the elemental force and influential presence which the Jewish school of Midrash has had on Modernism, and by extention on postmodernism, we need look no further than Johann Hamann and Jacques Derrida, Friedrich Schleiermacher and Walter Benjamin. The intersection between relativist hermeneutic and ludic heuristic statements funnels the prerogative of the critical assemblages. Of complimentary import to "The Rhetoric of Midrash" is Jacob Neusner's work on the liminality of discourse, which often is employed to clarify and qualify. In addition Robert Alter and Frenck Kermode's "The Literary Guide to the Bible" serves as a very functional and effective backdrop to some claims. By comparison to the vast intellectual fund of scholarship that treats this Jewish hermeneutic subject the concision of the promulgations seem approximative but insulate unto a paradigm that simplifies. However one must wonder if it is enough to award credit to such an involuted and particular study on a topic as exponentially equivocal and mystical as Midrash. I gather however the author does a great job explicating, unfolding, and arresting the exegitical quandaries that arise without claiming exceptional authority. In this she succeeds and her effort is a welcome addition to the postmodern reassesment of both Heine and Leopardi, two who fit the description but perhaps are denied such a classification because, paradoxically, their maverick intelligence and poetic genius is borne of implied classicism. Finally, the author encapsulates the poetics of both the German and the Italian by bringing to the fore how by adopting anologues Midrashic gestures they evidenced the "everyday as a metaphor against which the eternal is read, and the eternal a metaphor against which the everyday is reenacted".
