1-0 out of 5 stars Survival will not be about guns and ammo!
Some useful tips mostly too much time spent on firearms.Future survival will be about fleas and germs, water, food, and sharing with neighbors not about firearms.Mostly misses the real issues and does not address situations in detail, much too broad taking advantage of the title!

4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of Information
Everything you might want to know about the Mini 14 and its history; but it would be nice to have an updated edition that includes the newer Minis since 2005.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great History of the Mini-14
This book was a good read.It told of the firearms that lead to the development of the Mini-14 and the pros and cons of the design.I did feel like the author was out of material near the end of the book and put in filler of other similar weapons to the mini-14 as well that information was not completely useless.By the end of the book I was convinced that it is a great hunting and plinking rifle as well as a good rifle for self defense, however I still wouldn't classify this rifle as an assault rifle, I'll leave that title for the M-16 and AK-47 rifle families. If you are a fan or proud owner of this great Ruger rifle this book is worth the read.It reads fairly quickly for average readers and is more a history book than an instruction manual.

2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money for ammunition. . .
This book is very dated; it doesn't appear that the author or editor has looked at it, or revised it, since the mid-80s.As such, it fails to place the Mini-14 in the context of various recent crime bills and their effects on folding stocks, etc.Furthermore, there is too much in here about various Beretta designs, and a .22 cal. plinker.Much of the information is generic to all rifles, such as tips on scabbards and bipods, while there is relatively little timely information specific to the Mini-14, such as how to tweak better performance from the weapon. The author also digresses a bit too far afield on the Sturm Ruger corp. in general, and Ruger non-firearm information in particular.
Some current information on hand-loading for the Mini-14 would be a nice addition as well.
It appears this book was an early draft that was never finished for market, although it clearly shows evidence that the author is well-acquainted with his subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended reading for all gun enthusiasts.
Duncan Long's The Mini-14: The Plinker, Hunter, Assault, And Everything Else Rifle is the definitive work on the most versatile modern rifle available to homeowners, hunters, survivalists, law-enforcement agencies, and the military today. Long covers all sixteen models of the Mini-14 andhow the rifle owner can construct a number of variations through accessorykits such as standard, laser, and night scopes; magazines; folding andpistol-grip stocks; bullpup conversions; multi-caliber adaptors; flashsuppressors; silences; and slings. Long's detailed history of the Mini-14includes description of its factory-produced variations, specifications, available accessories, major suppliers, and a great deal more.Comprehensive, authoritative, and "reader friendly", The Mini-14is highly recommended reading for all gun enthusiasts, and a"must" for all Mini-14 gun owners.

2-0 out of 5 stars A good book for a beginner working with Mini-14s.
I recently purchase a Mini-14 and I was looking for some resource materials.I purchased both this book and "Super Systems". This is by far the better choice of the two. While field stripping explainationis ok, I would have liked some pictures of this proceedure. If you arealready an experienced Mini-14 user then save your money. ... Read more

Product Description
Here, entirely updated, is the latest edition of the most complete, authoritative cruising guide to the northeastern coast. The bible for Eastern sailors and powerboaters for more than half a century has been thoroughly overhauled and expertly refitted. For the preparation of the twelfth edition, the authors visited nearly all the harbors, talked with harbormasters and marina owners, and reevaluated earlier judgments. The Guide tells you how to dodge bad currents and edge around shoal water, and where to anchor and find essential services, including pump-out stations, fuel docks, and a hot shower. It notes channels and harbors that have been dredged or shoaled up; recently replaced buoys; and changes in marinas, boatyards, and other facilities. This guide is far more than a traditional cruising guide, providing valuable information on weather, tides, coastal geography and geology, fog, marine birds, animals, sea conditions, and even places of historical interest ashore. The authors—who know these great cruising grounds as old friends—relate the histories of the towns, ports, vessels, lighthouses, and even rocks you'll encounter. Black-and-white photographs and maps throughout. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I've been using this guide for 30 years
I wouldn't cruise Maine without it. It shouldn't be your only guide as names of stores and such are dated -- but the really great parts are timeless - the same strange current runs past Mt Desert rock and the old fisherman's story about Siasconset Nantucket sinking is still just as wonderful. Read it for the history, the stories, and the character of these special waters.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with this guide
The Cruising Guide to the New England Coast: Including the Hudson River, Long Island Sound, and the Coast of New Brunswick, Twelfth Edition

I was really disappointed when we received this book. I'm sure we could have returned it to Amazon, but as we are currently in the Caribbean, returning it would have cost more than the book. So it goes...

This book was originally written in 1937. It is in it's twelfth edition where it says in 1999 they wrote sections on the Hudson River and Cape Cod and some sections of Maine. The few black & white photos in the book look dated.

Sentences like "The latest miracle machine is GPS. If it does what it is said to do, it is a great source of comfort to the navigator" makes me wonder about the other info in this book which, at its best, is 11 years old.

We'll take it with us, but I hope to find something else. I would NOT recommend this book, sorry.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what it used to be
Thirty years ago we swore by The Cruising Guide to the New England Coast when we cruised in our Tartan 41. However, technology has increased the ability to receive the latest data. It would be good if the folks who bring us this Cruising Guide would have a web site to give us the latest information on the dredging of channels, great places to buy fish, etc. The book is outdated. However, it was a good read.

2-0 out of 5 stars all black and white
Maptech is a better quick reference guide and more useful for navigation

2-0 out of 5 stars Out of Date
While the cover for this book says 'Updated' and is labeled 12th edition, it appears to be a 2002 printing of a 1990 copyrighted texted. It describes the use of GPS briefly and refers to 'when it works, it is okay'. Obviously the comment predates the bombing raids on Bagdad. The description of harbors is little changed from a 1978 printing but having visited some of these harbors in 2004, I found the names, phone numbers and parts of the onshore facilities' descriptions totally out of date. I returned mine...hope you find a more up-to-date reference. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information with some glaring errors
Overall, the book provides some very useful information, but at least two glaring errors, both concerning the non-AK Czech rifle known as the vz58, leave questions about Long's research. On page 34 he writes, "These selective fire rifles are chambered for the 7.62x45mm Czech, which is identical to the Soviet M43 round."First, the 7.62x45 Czech is a different round; it is not identical to the Soviet M43, which is 7.62x39. (The earlier vz52 rifle, which was chambered in 7.62x45 Czech, was replaced with the vz52/57 in 7.62x39 as a result of Soviet insistence upon a standard round for all Warsaw Pact nations. This change would have been unnecessary if the two were identical.) In addition, the vz58 -- which replaced the vz52/57 -- was, and is, chambered in the 7.62x39 Soviet round.

Also, he barely mentions some variations of the AK -- such as the Egyptian and Bulgarian models.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Kalashnikov Family OfAssault Rifles
A tired rehash.
Very few pictures mostly line drawings
Totally out of date.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Story of the Most Influential Rifle in History
The AK-47 may not have been the very first "assault" rifle created to fill the gap between smaller sirearms and largerer machine guns in the military, but it is certainly the most influential and important rifle in the history of the 20th century.Duncan Long's tale explains the gun's origins, functioning, and its influence on the design and construction of such vaunted modern firearms as the FN-FAL (a weapon used heavily in Europe and by UN forces), the Galil (the Israeli assaut rifle), etc.

Is this book a manual on how to care for your Kalashnikov rifle or a catalog of its varied accessories?No--and it's not meant to be.Instead, it is a thorough and very readable history of the AK-family, from the AK-47's origins as a successor to the not-so-good SKS to its endurance as one of the best weapons ever designed to its successor the AK-74 and beyond.

If you have an interest in this fine firearm, please give Long's book a read--you'll enjoy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too BAD
this is not a book for starters cause it does not has any meaning in it

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is the backbone of any AK47 historian.
I have always found the AK47 and its spinoffs to be among the mostfascinating, absorbing, and attractive firearms in existance. It's the1911 of long-arms.This book serves as the perfect source of informationfor those who are in the same position as I am.Long writes in a mannerwhich is extremely readable, and he sticks to the topic without digressing. Even though some of the info contained has been obsoleted by recentgun-control legislation in the U.S. and the further modernization of the AKin the form of the AK100 series, it provides the most complete compilationof the AK family around, from infantry to sniper, including even thesmallest technical detail.I highly recommend it. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Weak effort
I received this book entirely by mistake!I had ordered a different book by Steve Kehaya on the SKS.When I contacted the seller about the mix-up, he graciously apologized, and refunded my purchase, saying to do with this book as I wish (since the price of shipping is so high compared to the value of the book).

Now that I have the two books to compare side by side, it's glaringly obvious how lacking this book is in depth and objectivity. While it does provide accurate basic information on a few common varieties, it doesn't even try to cover the many variations on the SKS, nor does it give much detail into the workings of the gun's parts.

If you're on a *very* tight budget and just want a basic guide to your SKS carbine, try to pick this up for under ten bucks (including postage).Otherwise, for just a few more dollars, treat yourself to the Steve Kehaya book.Really.It's about twice as long, better written, much better researched, and much better illustrated.

3-0 out of 5 stars Long on history, short on style
To be fair, this book contains a large amount of information about the SKS rifle, its history, its operation, accessories, and maintenance. I have two complaints, one relatively minor, one that has me strongly considering shipping it back for a full refund.

The minor complaint: Duncan Long's use of English is less than polished compared to what I'm used to. I hate grammar nazis more than most people, but there were too many sentences in this book that I had to reread because they just didn't quite flow. The language is not too technical and is easy to read...but one or two more trips across the editor's desk could have smoothed some rough edges in the writing.

The major complaint: Duncan Long, as far too many gun enthusiasts I've run into tend to do, falls into the trap of assuming that his knowledge about firearms translates into a kind of moral authority regarding the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. His regular lapses into tangents pontificating about the rights and wrongs of gun regulation is quite tiresome, unless you're a proud follower of the N.R.A.'s "Cold Dead Hands" propaganda. Anyone who remembers that the Bill of Rights was written to be vague, to necessitate continual reflection on how those Rights are best understood in changing times, stands a good chance of being as irritated by Duncan Long's unnecessary sermons as I was. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable lightweight adventure
Phil Hunter has just discovered the invention of the age--working antigravity--when he's laid off from his job, the entire department shut down. Phil decides this is what he's been waiting for--a chance to become fabulously wealthy with his own company, Anti-Gravity Unlimited. With anti-gravity, not only is space flight a cheap possibility, perpetual motion is also possible. With a couple of anti-gravity rods, it's easy to hook up a generator and create unlimited electrical current. All of mankind's environmental problems are solved--as are any issues with poverty. Phil sees a new utopia--until his house is blown up and all of his former co-workers are listed as killed in the paper.

On the run, Phil heads for his best friend's house, only to discover that his best friend has abandoned his long-time girlfriend (and clone)--where a hitman disguised as a bag lady tries to gun both of them down. Together, Phil and Nikki try to figure out how to stay alive for long enough to mass produce enough anti-gravity rods to allow him to start his business. Still, where on earth can they hide if the entire world corporate government is after them?

Author Duncan Long creates an intriguing dystopic future where corporations have taken over the government and are gradually replacing workers with robots, forcing the masses into poverty. Long adds charm to the story by having Phil accept this world in a matter-of-fact way. Sure everyone goes armed and expects to run into ambushes if they travel the interstates. Sure, armored bag-lady hitmen are going to be out there. Long keeps his writing and his narrative simple. ANTI-GRAV UNLIMITED wasn't (I don't think) targetted as a young adult novel, but it could have been.

I kept expecting to see some big reversal, a black moment, but things seemed pretty easy for Phil and Nikki. Because Phil made a big deal about his best friend (the one who'd cloned Nikki), I anticipated that Craig would play an important role--as an antagonist. Instead, the primary antagonist didn't seem especially frightening.

Unlike some other dystopic novels written during this period, ANTI-GRAV UNLIMITED doesn't really push the envelope and make us question society's directions. It's simply a nice old-fashioned story about one guy trying to get rich and get the girl in the face of overwhelming odds. Nothing wrong with that--I enjoyed it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good old fashoned fun read.
Reminds me of the Heinlein books that got me started in SF (think 'Have Spacesuit, Will Travel').
I hope the typos mentioned by others were simply the result of a hasty data entry from the original print edition to the digital one. I never saw the original so I cannot say for sure. Only a couple of them are glaring enough to take the reader out of the story but I hope they get cleaned up before this entertaining book ever gets the reprint it deserves.
As for the suicidal 'bag ladies' I assumed they were 'programmed' with the same drug used on the Lincoln character. The bad guys were certainly portrayed as ruthless enough to expend a few pawns to keep their secrets.
Finally, If Duncan Long ever sees this I urge him to write a sequel. The ending certainly deserves one.It sure looks like he planned one.Let's hope he still has his notes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining
A wonderfully entertaining and somewhat thought provoking work of "tounge-in-cheek" science fiction. Kind of reminiscent of some of Heinlein's work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Yeah, not bad, but...
Basically, it's a future-dystopia with a positive outlook. Corporations rule the Earth and prevent any technological development that might improve people's standard of living, wanting to keep us all as humble peons (sound familiar? *cynical moment*).

All is well in the land of rampant capitalism, when an inventor comes up with anti-grav rods that are a source of almost free, unlimited power (perpetual motion, yes!). While dodging corporate hit-men, who are actually hit-bag-ladies (for reasons never explained) he flies his van around and...well...you can read the book.

It's not great stuff - the bag ladies and their willingness to commit suicide at the drop of a hat were hard to swallow, and when we finally met the Big Bad, he was over-the-top and cliche-ish.Also, while I usually like romance subplots, this one was two-dimensional and the book would have been better off without it, IMNSHO.The ending is somewhat abrupt, too.And there are some wince-worthy typos, but you can fix those in the digital copy.

I think the real problem with it is the fact that it's got oodles of plot, but not really any *theme*.Nothing to make you think, nothing that really touches your heart and soul, no characters you fall in love with, or remember years later.

To be fair, there are good things about Antigrav Unlimited. It's entertaining enough to keep the pages turning.I probably won't ever reread it, but despite the cliches, it's a reasonably fun read. And it *is* a free download from www.baen.com's Free Library, so you can't beat the price.Give it a try sometime when you're out of things to read.

To the reviewer who's read it an ungodly number of times - well, I guess there's someone for every book, and I admit that I like a few that are less than original myself.They're...comfort food.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great either
I thought that this book was decent, but only decent.I can't really say specifically why, but I found the writing style to be a touch sophomoric.I never really got the sense that the protagonist was in real danger, and everything he wanted to do seemed to come too easy for him; I didn't find the villains terribly well-realized either.

That being said, the entire book can be read for free, courtesy of Baen's Free Library, and it was at least diverting and entertaining enough to be worth "free".I probably wouldn't pay money for it, though. ... Read more

The greatest value of this book is that it tells you how industrial (read business) spies think. We tend to think of sociopaths as Ted Bundy types luring innocent co-eds to their deaths, but this type fits into the corporate world quite comfortably. Some of the equipment in this book is dated, but the methods are current.I'm sure there are a few new tricks that have come along since this book was written, but it is still very cogent in today's world. No need to wait to get it, the publisher gets it out the next day 8003802230 or look on their site loompanics dot com. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Useless garbage
I recieved this book as a gift from a relative who meant well, but was not very gun savvy...

This book sufers from the 'need to put out another title syndrome.'In effect, nothing in this book is of value- the modifications are flights of fancy or hack job work.Basic searching on the internet will teach you more about building or upgrading the AR-15 platform than this book. Additionally, it is rife with inaccuracies and/or bad techniques to do modifications to the AR-15.

Morevover, this book is at least a decade and a half out of date. Many of the companies listed as parts sources (Rhino Systems for example) have been out of business for a decade, and it doesn't even address the A3 flattop configuartion that is the standard these days.It is obvious that the book is just a reprint of something from circa 1987 with no re-editing ro re-writing.

Finally, many of the chapters just read as one big advertisement for this company or that product, much like the current articles in many gun magazines. It is obvious Duncan Long gave glowing reviews of products in exchange for free samples of those products.

In short, this book is a waste of money. If not for the fact it was a present I would probably toss it out.If you want to learn about the AR-15 there are many far better sources in print and on the web. ... Read more

Sturm, Ruger 10/22 Rifle and .44 Magnum Carbine by Duncan Long is an excellent reference book for these 2 Ruger designs of which the 10/22 has become one of the most popular .22 rifles ever produced. All topics addressed in the book are of value, however, I only wish there had been more information on the .44 Magnum.A summary of the specific years produced and production numbers would be of value.More history is always helpful. But, overall it is a nice resource for these 2 significant Ruger rifles.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great For General/Basic Intro. to Sniper Rifles
This book is a good intro. to sniper rifles; although it doesn't go into enough detail to make it anything remotely like a field/training manual, it does give the reader a little info. on many different rifles in manydifferent cals. etc. If you'd like to purchase an accurate rifle withsniping accuracy (.5 MOA) and you don't want to spend the big bucks to doit, give this book a read.It will also give you a brief history lesson onvarious rifles. It's an easy read, and well worth buying. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Like an Incomplete Brochure
This book is good as an introduction to the HK small arms but not as a definitive guide. There are key pieces of false information, poorly researched history and extended areas of rewritten H&K catalogs.

If you are fairly educated on Heckler and Koch small arms I do not recommend this book; there is nothing special in this publication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive guide to HK rifles and spinoffs
In the late 70's and early 80's, a new type of military unit was developed and refined to combat terrorism.During the Iranian emmbassy crisis in England, the world watched as black clad commandos stormed the building, each carring a radical new machine gun, different than anything anyone had seen. That was the HK MP5, a spinoff of the famous G3 rifle.Although the G3 and MP5 had been in production since the late 50's/ early 60's, the public had rarely seen or heard of these remarkable weapons.Soon they became the weapon of choice for counterterrorism units, SWAT teams, and other specialized units for close quarter combat, and long range sharpshooting. This is the best book availible for information on Heckler and Koch rifles, submachine guns, and general machine guns.Includes the history, development, and other facts about the G3, MP5, HK33, and any other variants, both in automatic and semi.Has information on the rare Vollmer conversions, sniper models, as well as information on accessories such as the HK69 grenade launcher and other rarities.Pictures are great, as are the descriptions of each of these weapons. The book does not have information about HK pistols, but I believe the author has written a separate book regarding them.If your a HK fan, a gun nut in general, or are just curious this is the book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars HK assault rifle systems
I read this book, and it was helpful with all the HK assault rifles, subguns, and machine guns. If hit some of the assault rifles, but it more into the subguns, and machine guns. If you want a sub, or a machine gun,you may want to look at this! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars How to make Homemade Ammo
My husband thought this was really neat. It's not really what I was looking for, but I would buy it again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Typical Duncan Long Trash
Yet again we are confronted with a book that is Long on BS and short of useful info, much like every other Duncan Long book. The book is worthless for anything except starting a fire and is typical of the trash put out by Duncan Long.

1-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't tell you how to make ammo.
It tells you how to make improvized gunpowder (like you didn't already know), but no instructions on how to make brass cases, without which, there is nothing to reload or cache and there is no point owning anything other than musket...I bet the gun/ammo grabbers are quaking in their boots !

3-0 out of 5 stars A simple Know-How Book...
I'll make this short and sweet. This is a good book for learning how to make your own ammunition, but is not for the true beginner. This book does have some useful tips, but there are much easier ways to re-load than isprocessed here.Over-all, however, it is a well written book. ... Read more
