3-0 out of 5 stars The average survival manual with nothing new in it.
This manual is okay, just nothing spectacular. Dated information (1993). Standard descriptions of firearms you could probably write yourself. I'd get Mel Tappans book instead. It was a much better read and although written alot earlier, I thought it was a much better book. Save your money, this one is kind of a disappointment. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Poor Man's Fort Knox
OK, I don't know what I was thinking. I bought the book thinking it would give me design ideas on building an inexpensive & secure safe in my home. Instead it tells me, "You don't need an expensive safe, you can buy an inexpensive one instead."
I should have read the reviews that Amazon.com supplies and saved myself the money. Thank goodness for [...]discounts so at least I didn't pay full price for it! Thanks, Amazon!

2-0 out of 5 stars Some useful info, but...
$8.00 for less than 50 pages. And what is contained in those pages amounts to not much more than a review of prices for certain companies' safes, some idea of how effective or not they are, and ... not much else.Oh, and the great way to save money on safes is to buy one used.No really earth-shattering secrets are contained here, unfortunately. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book - would help a new person to this rifle.
There are several ways that this book can be used. You can read the entire book sequentially or you can use this book as a good source book.I believe that this book is written well that it could be used either way. The reason that I mention that the book could be used for a new user is that - barrel twist rates and grain ammo is clearly to very well. Sure there are other sources for some of this information but this book should be a good source of basic knowledge for any owner of the Armorlite Rifle. I know that many people feel that this rifle is not a true rifle and have labeled this weapon and material as an Assault Rifle. This is very unfair. The first assault rifle from the Allied side of WWII was the M1 Carbine.

The subject matter is explained well and uses good basic English. There are some complex topics covered by the book but the material is very understandable. The illustrations are not technical but basic drawings that are similar to the front of the book. It is the content that is most important. I believe that this book could help a new owner understand what they have purchased or help refine a future purchase. The content can also help a collector on some of the earlier Colt models that were produced.

3-0 out of 5 stars AR-15/M16 Practical Guide
Info is a little old but I wanted it for maintenance, and that doesn't change much over time. The price was right.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but dated
This book is a good primer on the AR-15 and M-16, and it's a decent book to flip through and browse around various different versions of the weapon while reading up on its history. For the price, it's got a decent amount of information and some good illustrations. My main beef, however, is that this book was written over 15 years ago, well before the Brady Bill changed the playing field of assault rifles. It would be much more useful if there was information on the changing legality of pre- and post-ban AR-15/M-16s.I haven't read Long's other books, so maybe they cover this information.Although I find this is good, casual reading, I think it might be more practical to save your money and invest in a newer book by the same author.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Duncan Long knows what he is talking about!

This book is very informative, but like I've said many times - - - don't ever try to have complete privacy or you will end up living as a reclusive, cabin dwelling hermit somewhere. All jokes aside, this book spent a lot of time describing what might be coming down the path as far as the "new common" surveillance. And, also what we are currently dealing with in the ever present surveillance community.

This book laid some groundwork as far as what steps to take, and you do want some of your privacy or you wouldn't be reading this review. And,even the simplest things like ditching those "free" savings cards, and store "club cards" that promise a price reduction when used...And, of course deleting yourself from the social networking sites like face book, myspace, and the dating sites are seemingly easy, but at the same time so personally freeing

Overall, I found this to be a great book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacking
The cover and foreword of this book seemed promising, but the bulk of the text failed to deliver. The book discusses major ways to protect one's privacy, from the home to the internet to the telephone.Unfortunately, however, often the advice is "don't write any email you wouldn't want posted publicly" or "when using the phone, act as though you are shouting onto a busy street with a megaphone."In short, the single best way to protect your privacy is never to communicate in the first place.Great, but not exactly helpful.

The author also discusses RFID tags at length; how they might be used to track your purchases, your physical whereabouts and movements, and how nefarious persons might locate expensive property on your person or within your home.He even explains how one might construct a Faraday Cage to keep such tags from being read by passers-by.The problem though is that Long never describes how to identify, remove, or destroy RFID tags on/within items (if this is even possible, which I know in some cases it is).Instead, the best solution is to keep such items in a foil-lined box (insert joke here).

By the final chapter of the book, it seems the author's purpose is simply to inform the reader that data miners and others hoping to compromise one's privacy are everywhere and the best course of action is simply not to reveal any information in the first place.A bit of a chilling read, but if you're looking for a how-to guide, there are better options.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Complete Description of the Three Guns
For some reason the three guns - MAC-10, TEC-9, and Uzi have captured the attention of Hollywood, the news media, and the anti-gun crowd. You see them in movies, usually in the hands of the bad guys. They are inexpensive stamped sheetmetal guns, which with the exception of the Uzi have not found significant favor with any of the world's armed forces.

The important thing to remember is that these guns are available on the civilian market, but they are not fully automatic sub-machine guns. They have effectively the same functionality as standard semi-automatic pistols, but they look mean. And to be sure, most of them have large capacity magazines which seems to annoy lots of the anti-gun crowd.

If you really want a machine gun, different rules apply and you probably don't need this book.

I have not read books by Duncan Long before, but I was quite impressed with this one. He clearly knows how to write, and has an amazing amount of background information on the guns, the companies that manufactured them, the various choices in ammunition and so on. I shall look for other books by him.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yhe Terrifying Three

Product Description
This carefully researched revised and updated edition of The AR-15/M16 Sourcebook offers fresh insight into why the AR-15/M16 rifle remains a favorite of soldiers, law enforcement officials, civilian shooters and self-defense experts. In it, Duncan Long takes another look at the history of the "black-rifle" from the bureaucratic blunders and military infighting that ruined its reliability during the Vietnam War to the modifications that transformed it into the most reliable weapon in the world. He also examines the many military and custom spinoffs of the firearm, including an invaluable listing of its various models, supplemented by an impressive collection of photos and illustrations. In addition, he covers grenade launchers, SAW versions, and experimental weapons systems and even gives a detailed assessment of the OICW and other firearms now being tested as replacements for the U.S. military's M16 and M4 carbine. An entire section of the book is devoted to the very newest accessories for the AR-15, with a hard look at which ones will enhance its capabilities-and which could get the shooter killed. In addition to offering advice on improving an AR-15 rifle, picking the best ammunition for it, and ensuring its reliability, Long presents simple techniques for creating a one-of-a-kind exotic weapon built around this rifle through the selection of parts and accessories now on the market (and where to get them). Finally, the book provides complete instructions on how to field-strip, detail strip, troubleshoot, and assemble an AR-15.Whether you want a weapon you can rely on to get you out of a tight spot or wish to build a super accurate target version of the AR-15, this is the most complete and up-to-date resource available on what many consider to be the best rifle ever made. ... Once I received this book, I had to flick thru it.......I couldn't put it down. There was so much stuff that I didn't know and even somethings I did, but didn't think they'd be in here.......they were.WOW great book for EVERY GUN OWNER AND ESPECIALLY AR-15, AR-10 AND AR's OWNERS in general.Yes.I highly recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Historical Reference for AR15 Rifles But Needs More Recent Updates on the Technical Sections (Second Half)
For new owners of the AR15 rifle who are looking for a good reference book for the historical evolution of the rifle and basic understanding of the parts and terminology, this is a good starting point. However, If you want to get the necessary detail to actually work on the rifle, I would recommend going to AR15.com to the get more current tips and guidance. This book was last revised in 2001 and a lot had changed since, including the expiration of the ban on assult rifles in 2004. It is enjoyable reading.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs or Wants to know?
If you are interested in a long detailed history of the rifle and the grenade launcher variant, then you will like this book, as about 200 of 300 pages are devoted to these topics. If you are interested in care, maintenance and accessories, look elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars Badly in need of an update.
Generally the book serves its purpose, as an overview of the Ruger pistol, it works, but it has a few problems.

Chapter one, history: This section has a few small but highly noticeable errors such as conflating Springfield Armory, Inc., the company and the Springfield Armory, the government installation.

Chapter two, variations: fine so far as I can tell, but of course the book was published in 1988, so quite a bit has happened since then!

Chapter three, maintenance: Fine so far as it goes, but doesn't have anything on the Mark three which has several complications added to takedown.

Chapter four, accessories: By nature this section was outdated as soon as it was published, but now it's almost embarrassing; some of the equipment in this section might be found in a museum.

Chapter five, ammunition: Nothing wrong here.

If you own a Mark two, this book still has value, especially considering it's price, but if you own a mark three your money might be better spent elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ruger Mark Standard model
I believe this product is accurate pertaining to the pistol models. Indexed well.
A good history of the company, and of the creators. Excellent data references
pertaining to each model; and diagrams associated to the models. A good read and
well worth the purchase price.

Frank Baum's original Wizard of Oz story, presenting many different takes on the elements of the story, answering questions never answered in the original work. "The Adventures of Glinda Gale" is a solid addition to any fiction collection and for anyone looking for a twist on Oz.
