Product Description
In 1841, the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow heard the story of Acadian lovers, separated by the Expulsion and reunited at the end of their lives. He elaborated this simple tale into his long narrative poem, Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie. Published in 1847, it soon gained worldwide popularity. Longfellow offered Acadians a believable story about their ancestors. They adopted it as a true legend of their past. The tragic story of Evangeline and Gabriel has captivated Acadians and non-Acadians ever since. Evangeline, the dutiful 17-year-old daughter of an elderly Grand Pré farmer, is in love with Gabriel, the blacksmith's son. Before the two can exchange vows, British soldiers march into the village, burn it to the ground, order the villagers into ships, and send them far from their Nova Scotia homeland. In the mayhem, Evangeline witnesses her father's death from a broken heart and loses sight of Gabriel. Her desperate continent-wide search for her childhood sweetheart -- taking her from the cypress groves of Louisiana to a forest mission in the Ozark Mountains -- is one of the most affecting accounts of unfulfilled love ever written. Evangeline is a hero of mythic proportions. This sumptuously produced commemorative edition of Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie coincides with the 400th anniversary of the founding of Acadia. As well as the complete text of the poem, it features more than 40 engravings from an enchanting Victorian Evangeline published in 1866 by Bell and Daldy, London. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautifully illustrated and bound classic epic of American History
This tale nearly defines a people in the eyes of the world. The beauty of language, depth of feeling, drama, and pathos are unexcelled.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift or keepsake edition
This edition of Evangeline is a beautiful book that is ideal if you would like to give it as a gift (or keep for yourself). It is a hardcover, beautifully decorated with gold colored print and flower designs. The spine is cloth covered. The poem is laid out attractively inside on ivory colored pages, illustrated with many black and white etchings throughout.A note in the back of the book states that the illustrations are by several artists and were "first brought together" in an edition published in London in 1866.Also noted is that this edition "follows the text of the Minehaha Edition, published in New York by Van Cleve-Andrews in 1895." ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Be Forewarned
A friend and I toured Longfellow's home in Cambridge this past July and were absolutely delighted by the experience. The work they do to preserve his house and property is truly remarkable and I would strongly recommend it to anyone.Sadly, this is also where I picked up a copy of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: Selected Poems. They carried many attractive collections of Longfellow by reputable presses, but, foolishly, I was swayed by this handsomely bound volume which promised a broad collection of lyrics plus three lengthy narratives printed in their entirety.

Unfortunately, the volume is so badly edited, I have already urged the Longfellow house not to carry it!Indeed, there are several hundred errors and probably more imperfect pages than good ones.

Most routinely, there are uncountable typesetting or typographical glitches.Strophes within the same poem, for instance, are not consistently formatted or divided with an empty line - making for an awkward reading (see, for example, the confusing elision of Crashaw's motto with Longfellow's poem, A Psalm of Life, p. 53).In addition, spaces between words are often dropped or else extra spaces appear - I especially like those before punctuation which leave a comma or semicolon floating in the margin.

Of course, these are amusing, though minor, embarrassments. However, all too many errors are of grave consequence. The last six lines are missing [!] from The Courtship of Miles Standish (p. 110).As printed, the poem ends with a comma!!Also, six strophes are missing from the opening poem, The Builders. Some mistakes are utterly bizarre (strophes 10-12 of The Wreck of the Hesperus read "Oh fatherl...O fathert...O fartherl!," p. 66), and it is unimaginable that the editors would have missed them had they actually done an editor's work!Worst of all is the highly corrupt, Hiawatha.Dozens, about 60 by my count, of individual words are dropped at random throughout the text (ten instances alone between the bottom-half of 170 through p.172, for example).

As a scholar of music and poetry, my concern may be more intense than some - I have obsessively re-edited the entire volume for myself (making it quite serviceable for my purposes, however ugly!).Nevertheless, excepting someone who wants only a pretty souvenir for the mantle (perhaps, the intended customer of Castle Books - and their parent company, Book Sales, inc.), no one could remain unflustered while reading through this book. This relects badly on both the publishers and the editors, Johanna Brownell and Lisa Lipkin (why did it take two of them!?).Considering that Longfellow's poetry is well within the public domain, it is sad that someone wishing to own a collection of favorites should be duped into purchasing an attractive, yet often unreadable, volume. It certainly should not be sold on the premises of a first-rate, national institution that honors the very poet the publishing house treats so carelessly.

Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - The Song of Hiawatha is based on the legends and stories of many North American Indian tribes, but especially those of the Ojibway Indians of northern Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. They were collected by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, the reknowned historian, pioneer explorer, and geologist. He was superintendent of Indian affairs for Michigan from 1836 to 1841.Schoolcraft married Jane, O-bah-bahm-wawa-ge-zhe-go-qua (The Woman of the Sound Which the Stars Make Rushing Through the Sky), Johnston. Jane was a daughter of John Johnston, an early Irish fur trader, and O-shau-gus-coday-way-qua (The Woman of the Green Prairie), who was a daughter of Waub-o-jeeg (The White Fisher), who was Chief of the Ojibway tribe at La Pointe, Wisconsin.Jane and her mother are credited with having researched, authenticated, and compiled much of the material Schoolcraft included in his Algic Researches (1839) and a revision published in 1856 as The Myth of Hiawatha. It was this latter revision that Longfellow used as the basis for The Song of Hiawatha. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Longfellow's saga is pure New England Renaissance.
Although very popular in its day; Longfellow's "Song of Hiawatha" was later viewed to be superficial and saccharine. Where as Walt Whitman may have spoken with more of an organic American voice, Longfellow drew upon English Romantic models and looked to Norse and especially the Finnish epic or "edda" "Kalevala" for inspiration.

Not with standing; Longfellow's saga is pure New England Renaissance; touching upon values and aesthetics characteristic of Longfellow's circle: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Emerson and Thoreau.

The nature-painting of the "Song of Hiawatha" is outstanding; the poetry is full of quotables; and the over-arching message is profound.

5-0 out of 5 stars Haiwatha's tale
An undying tale.. legend... song... Wonderful poetry, the language is simply astounding! I have read the russian translation by Bounin, which was as remarkable as the original.

5-0 out of 5 stars The language/ rhythm is as mythical and lovely as the plot
A book for generations.Mine was published 1898 and given me by my mother whose father(b.1875) gave it to her.It goes to the heart of the Indian race, a people susceptible to mythology and magic as their last great hope. Read it with an open mind, imagination, and for its beauty.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great campfire book that really makes you think.
"The Song of Hiawatha" is the best book I have ever been exposed to.Every time I hear the wonderful rhyme of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, I begin to think of what this land was like before the Europeans conquered it.It is a wonderful tale of peace between nations and a great book to read to children. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hiawatha Returns!
Poor Hiawatha! For years, this great American poem of the 19th century has been relegated to the children's poetry shelves, where it lies languishing, despite several fine picture book editions of parts of it.Parodied almost upon publication, notably by Lewis Carroll, its heavy beat, taken from a Finnish epic, has been thought of as archsoporific. To use Shaw's phrase for late Ibsen drama, it has to be really DONE.And it is in this superb, unabriged recording. The producers and reader William Hootkins have trusted the poem itself, and Longfellow's intentions, not the parodists. The result? The restoration of an American classic, one of the first truly populist works in the canon of American poetry. The richness of the language and the stirring images, especially of Hiawatha and Mudgikeewis, are there to be revelled in.Should you ask me, is it worth it, is this reading worth the effort, I should say, Do but listen, do but stop and hear the heartbeats!Excellent, and very much needed! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Quaint history...
As an old Massachusetts man and a enthusiast of Mass. history, of course I am interested in Emerson, Holmes, Thoreau, Longfellow and company. Though, at first glance, Longfellow may seem a bit superficial and out-dated-in a stale New England way; he is actually quite heart-felt and poignant at times.

As for the New England way, that is all part of the charm-New England is like the "grandmother's attic" of America: full of quaint history.

Also see the "Song of Hiawatha", Emerson and Oliver Wendell Holmes.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Life is real , Life is earnest..
"Tell me not in mournful numbers/ Life is but an empty dream.......Life is real/ Life is earnest/ and the Grave is not the goal/ Dust thou art, To Dustreturnest/ Was not spoken of the soul."
This is from Longfellow's " Psalm to life" and has the kind of affirmative, willful strength that much English Victorian poetry( Henley's Invictus, Tennyson's 'Ulysses' ' Browning's "Rabbi Ibn Ben Ezra" )
Longfellow was the most highly esteemed poet of the nineteenth century . His long- poems were taught in American schools well into the middle of the twentieth century as American classics.I can remember going through 'Evangeline' and 'Hiawatha' and 'The Courtship of Miles Standish'( which is in this volume) in seventh and eighth grade.
Longellow's reputation declined drastically perhaps because of his quite conventional language, and style.
There is asolidity, and sobriety in his verse which did not win twentieth - century favor.
However I find many of his poems have insightful and telling. I think too he should be valued as one writes in a positive and dignified way about the country and culture of which he is a part.

5-0 out of 5 stars "All are the Architects of Fate...."
"Working in these walls of time,
Some with massive deeds and great,
Some with Ornaments of Rhyme"

These are the lines of the first verse of a powerfully written poem "The Builders" which, to me, seems to be about living a moral, honorable life on which to build a future for all of society.Such powerfull and truthfull words to live by.

On a whim, I recently pulled this book from my bookshelf to read(I have a copy in 'The Classic collectors edition' which I like mostly because it's prety decoration for my bookshelves. As a child I learned "Paul Revere's Ride" in school, but never learned the full depth of Longfellow's works. So refreshing are the realistic moralism of yesteryear, from a time when a persons works and deeds counted for something.

I was captivated by the brutality of "The Saga of king Olaf" as it recounted the brutal nordic kings' religious conquest of Scandanavia."Hiawatha's Song" swept me up into a tale of beauty of a time lost. The poetry of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is writen with a beauty and elegance and even excitement which conveys thier meaning in stunning clarity. As I read "Paul Revere's Ride" for the first time in over a decade I found myself speaking in the rythm of the hoofbeats of that steed Paul Revere rode.

These historic poems are truly great, and should be read and cherished by all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Longfellow:One of the true masters of rhyme poetry!
This slim paperback book from Dover Thrift Editions is an excellent starting place for those who are not familiar with the poetic works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It's inexpensive, a quick read (at only 84 pages), and contains much of Longfellow's most popular poems, plus some selected prose as well as a few more obscure works. Longfellow (1807-1882) was an absolute master of rhyme, meter, and the the actual SOUND of words, and he wrote with a strong sense of morality and ethics (one reason that he is gererally disregarded by modern poetry snobs, but loved by his faithful readers!). All in all, if you want to explore the poetic mind of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow for the first time, you can't go wrong with this book! Check out his masterful choice of words and imagery in poems like "The Christmas Bells", "The Slave's Dream", "Hymn to the Night", "A Psalm of Life", "The Building of the Ship", "The Reaper and the Flowers", "Excelsior", etc., etc., etc. Longfellow enthusiasts looking for a more complete or scholarly volume should check into some of the other Longfellow books offered on Amazon, particularly "The Complete Poetical Works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow", although I found "Complete's" small print, (in columns, like most modern Bibles) to be a bit rough on the eyes....Either way, explore this excellent master of rhyme!

4-0 out of 5 stars "Listen, my children, and you shall hear. . ."
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was one of the most noteworthy poets of the 19th century United States. "Favorite Poems" brings together selections from about 40 years' worth of his career. While some of the poems seem very dated -- due to their sentimentality and conventional structure -- the best of these poems remain rewarding and enjoyable.

The focus in this collection is on Longfellow's shorter poems. So his long poems "The Song of Hiawatha" and "Evangeline" are not included, and not even excerpted. But the volume does contain many of his most memorable pieces: "The Wreck of the Hesperus," "The Village Blacksmith," etc.

The longest poem in the collection is "The Courtship of Miles Standish," a mini-epic of more than 30 pages. "Courtship" is a fascinating poem about the colonial era Puritans, and offers a fascinating perspective on gender relations, race, religion, and other aspects of Puritan culture. "Courtship" makes for an interesting companion text for both actual Puritan era writings (like Mary Rowlandson's captivity narrative) and later literary works about that era (like Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible").

Another noteworthy poem is "The Slave's Dream," a somewhat romantic, but sympathetic view of an enslaved African-American. Also included is "Paul Revere's Ride," a wonderfully musical poem that, like "The Courtship of Miles Standish," looks back at American history. "Paul Revere's Ride" has a particularly impressive rhyme scheme to complement Longfellow's masterful use of meter. Yes, some of Longfellow's work may not seem very relevant to contemporary audiences. But "Favorite Poems" contains much that remains vital, and deserves a continuing readership both in and out of schools. ... Read more

Labour with what zeal we will,
Something still remains undone,
Something uncompleted still
Waits the rising of the sun.

From his youthful works to his final, mature poems, the breadth and beauty of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poetry is on display in this wonderful compilation. “A Psalm of Life,” which opens the collection, comes from Longfellow’s very first book, while “L’Envoi” captures the chill feel of oncoming death. Also included are the ever-popular “Evangeline,” “The Song of Hiawatha,” “The Wreck of the Hesperus,” and more.

5-0 out of 5 stars An American classic
Longfellow is not placed among the great poetic masters. But his great reputation in his lifetime does make a certain sense. For he wrote much poetry of strength and value. He is an American classic and if his too many long lines in 'Evangeline' and 'Hiawatha' put many to sleep they too at times inspired.

Poor Henry Wadsworth Longfellow -- not only do many
people get his name and the name of William Wordsworth
mixed up, but he seems "doomed" in "modern" times to
be labeled, filed, and forgotten as a "sentimental,
sing-song poet."What an injustice!This man was
considered to be the premier poet of his day, and while
it is true that fashions in taste change, it is not
true that deeper insight, once gained, is meant to be
brushed aside.Few people ever achieve deeper insight,
so we should listen sometimes to those who do.
There are many poems in this complete collection
which even modern academics may not be aware of.I was
surprised to learn that a modern academic admitted that
he had no idea of where the idea of "poetic inspiration"
came from [ancient Greece] though he could have probably
spouted quotes from Marx or Derrida line for line.We
have lost contact with the knowledge and culture, not
only of America's past, but of the world's cultural past.
Too much attention has been lost on Longfellow in
"immortalizing" him for the memorized poems.More
attention needs to be paid to him, especially in
these modern times, for his deeper insights, his
offering up of the Orphic, Pythagorean, and hermetic
traditions as well. As one modern critic has said of
him: "If Longfellow's achievements have been minimized
in our century, that is partly because students of
American literature have been less interested in the
conservative aesthetics of restraint than in the
comparatively radical-experimental aesthetics of
visionary romanticism." -- Lawrence Buell; "Introduction"
to _Selected Poems_ (Penguin Classics).Yet, moderns
are cutting themselves off from an even loftier
visionary past...one that extends back to ancient
times and has richly influenced the thought and

writings of many of the world's more profound
thinkers and poets.Longfellow was also a translator
of the work of other poets -- but we should understand
that we can tell something about a poet and his
thinking...and his being shaped by experience...in
his selection of the poems that he wishes to take the
time and effort to translate.
Thus, we should look carefully -- and listen
carefully - to Longfellow when he chooses to translate
"Coplas De Manrique" (from the Spanish). It is not
just everyone who would translate, or understand,
something like this: "But O, how false and full of guile/
That world, which wore so soft a smile/But to betray!/
She, that had been his friend before,/Now from the
fated monarch tore/Her charms away."
And the explanatory note which was printed with
the poem helps us to see why Longfellow chose it:
"In the language of his historian, 'Don Jorge Manrique,
in [this] elegant Ode, full of poetic beauties, rich
embellishments of genius, and high moral reflections,
mourned the death of his father as with a funeral hymn.
This praise is not exaggerated. The poem is a model
of its kind.Its conception is solemn and beautiful;
and, in accordance with it, the style moves on, --
calm, dignified, and majestic." (p. 27)
The poems I would suggest need fresh attention and
modern reading are: Coplas De Manrique; Endymion;
The Goblet of Life; Mezzo Cammin; The Occultation of
Orion; Gaspar Becerra; Suspiria; Prometheus; Enceladus;
Fata Morgana; The Haunted Chamber; Charles Sumner
[the thoughts expressed]; The Herons of Elmwood; Haroun
Al Raschid; Palingenesis; Hawthorne (May 23, 1864);
Three Friends of Mine (5 sonnets); The Descent of
the Muses; Keramos; Rondel (translation from Froissart);
Ovid In Exile (Tristia, Book III, Elegy X); from
the Seven Sonnets from Michael Angelo (To Vittoria
Colonna; Dante; Canzone); Jugurtha; Night; Hermes
Trismegistus; Possibilities; Dedication (before

the poem Michael Angelo).
There is much of wonder, solemnity, and grandeur
in Longfellow. As Albert Glover says in the
Introduction to this volume: "...Longfellow's work
remains noble in its dedication to ideals which
defy mere fashion. His voice is learned, tolerant,
compassionate, and courageous." (--Albert Glover,
"Introduction.")
Here are a few lines from "Endymion":
Like Dian's kiss, unasked, unsought,
Love gives itself, but is not bought;
Nor voice, nor sound betrays
Its deep, impassioned gaze.

It comes, -- the beautiful, the free,
The crown of all humanity, --
In silence and alone
To seek the elected one.
--Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Product Description

Volumes III and IV of this edition bring together all the extant letters of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow for the period 1844-1865, most of which have never before been published. These letters carry Longfellow through the remarkable period when he was gaining renown both at home and abroad as the poet laureate of America. His influence swelled with the publication of such works as Evangeline, The Song of Hiawatha, The Courtship of Miles Standish, and Part One of Tales of a Wayside Inn. During these twenty-two years his correspondence proliferated, reaching at least 4000 letters, of which 1500 are known to have survived and are reproduced in these two volumes.

The letters offer further insight not only into the poet's personal life but into his time as well. They document the manifold burdens placed on a popular man of letters, from responding to pleas for advice from unpublished poets to dealing with critical attacks on his own poetry to warding off the importunities of scores of admirers.

The letters further reveal a political interest not hitherto suspected in Longfellow. His exchanges with Senator Charles Sumner shed light on the political dramas of the day, including presidential elections, the Mexican War, the slavery controversy, the founding of the Republican party, and the Civil War. From a social viewpoint, the letters provide an absorbing account of the settled and elegant life of a member of the Boston-Cambridge upper class, into which Longfellow had moved with his marriage to Frances Appleton. They also reveal him as a warm-hearted family man, devoted to his wife and children and solicitous for the welfare of an unhappy brother, a widowed sister, and two wayward nephews.

The letters of Volume III span the publication of five volumes of verse, three anthologies, and a novel. They document the numerous private events that vied with literary production for Longfellow's attention, such as the birth of his six children and the complicated summer migrations to Nahant or Newport. They also follow Longfellow through his resignation from the liaryard professorship in 1854, which was prompted by a desire to devote himself more fully to writing.

Andrew Hilen, who is author of Longfellow and Scandinavia and Professor of English at the University of Washington, has included numerous contemporary photographs to illustrate the letters. His scrupulous annotations supply relevant identifications of individuals, explain allusions, and provide information regarding the addresses of letters, endorsements, postmarks, and the location of manuscripts.
