Product Description
Jean Lorrah's novels have a loyal following, but her many fans are unaware that she's also written short stories. Here are all her best tales collected in one volume. The author provides a lively introduction, telling how she became first a science fiction fan and then a writer. She provides hints for aspiring writers, and shows the pitfalls in a writer's life. The theme of these seven stories is the power of the word -- a truly magical power that can be used for good or for evil. From outer space to the inner city, the characters in these tales of fantasy and science fiction all exhibit verve, flair, and the willingness to take responsibility for their own actions.Great reading from a great writer! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Doom or Unity -- Pick One
After a mysterious mutation divided the human race into Simes and Gens, the two kinds have lived in a deadly embrace of fear and hatred. To live, each Sime must kill a Gen every month, stripping this human being of vital life energy. Gens, being human, object and band together to keep the Simes from killing, while the Simes work together to capture and enslave Gens. Neither see the other as real people.

But there is another way, by which specially talented Simes can safely take life energy from willing Gens and give it to other Simes. Yet these channels are reviled by the bulk of Sime society as perverts, and are not even known by the free Gens.

However, a crisis is coming. Civilized Simes are outrunning their ability to raise Gens in captivity for the kill. A leading mathematician has demonstrated that it is impossible for civilization to continue to be based upon monthly kills -- and died trying to live on channel's transfer, convinced that he had to back his theory with his life. Some killer Simes are following his example and turning to the channels, but not quickly enough. It's decision time for all humanity -- embrace channel's transfer, or become extinct.

This novel has been out of print and almost impossible to find for far too long. But it's finally being reprinted as part of the Unity Trilogy by Meisha Merlin. If you missed out on the original printing, or your copy is crumbling like mine is, don't miss out on the chance to get this omnibus reissue, along with Ambrov Keon and House of Zeor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dedicated to Freedom
Risa Tigue was the daughter of a successful Norlea businessman, and well on the way to becoming a top-notch businesswoman in her own right -- until the day a hurricane turned her world upside-down. Her father died before her eyes, voiding the precious life-energy that every Sime must have. Risa herself survived only by draining her own supply of that life-energy to the limit, consuming it to give her the extra strength essential to get safely to shore. Now she must hunt a Gen, a member of the other half of humanity that provides life-energy.

That hunt puts her straight into the arms of an extraordinary individual -- a Gen like no other she had known. A Gen who is not drugged livestock or wild barbarian, but a man who speaks her own language and literally invites her into his shelter. A Gen who can give his life-energy and not die, but become stronger and healthier from the giving -- and who recognizes her as having the precious sub-mutation that makes his lifestyle possible. If only he can convince her to turn her back on the killer lifestyle she grew up with, he may yet save his imperiled community.

And that's just the beginning of an intricate dance of move and counter-move as Risa Tigue and Sergi ambrov Keon come to terms with one another and explore the meaning of freedom in a world where invisible chains bind everyone.

This novel has been out of print for years, and almost impossible to find, but Meisha Merlin is now reprinting it as part of the Unity Trilogy omnibus, along with House of Zeor and Zelerod's Doom. If you missed out on the original, or if your copy is crumbling like mine is, don't miss this opportunity to get the new edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jean Lorrah Writes In Jacqueline Lichtenberg's Universe
Ambrov means "dedicated to" -- and Keon means "Freedom".

Ambrov Keon belongs to a series of novels set in Jacqueline Lichtenberg's Sime~Gen Universe (not Sime/Gen anymore but for the web-based era, Sime~Gen) which will be reprinted.Ambrov Keon is part of the first trilogy which will be bound together under the title The Unity Trilogy, and available on amazon summer of 2003.Plans call for both hc and trade paperback editions because the fans have desperately wanted these books on acid free paper for years.Any changes in plan will be posted on the Sime~Gen Universe's website.

Risa Teague is a young adult woman who has just watched her father drown during a hurricane on the Mississippi River. She knows very well and precisely WHO she is -- a successful merchant's daughter, skilled and talented enough to take over her father's business and run it as well as he did-- but she has no clue in all creation of WHAT she is.

Stumbling away from the river's edge, groping blindly through the terrifying storm, she crashes into the life of a man who has just lost his best friend and admired leader to the storm. He saves her life, and in the process recognizes exactly WHAT she is.So he takes her home with him.

That's four strikes against any Romance developing between them -- and it's not love at first sight, believe me.

Read this novel and go with Risa Teague through the process of discovering WHAT she is, and just WHO this exasperating (and utterly irresistible) man is.

She's an honorable woman who can not and will not leave this man before paying her debt to him for saving her life. But she deeply and sincerely wants to get away -- she has a good life waiting for her, and wants no part of this man's business. She plots, and manipulates, connives and organizes until she's free of her obligation -- and then makes the most devastating discovery of all.

This is Jean Lorrah's writing at her best -- and if you've read Jean's Star Trek novels, you know that's going some! The Sime~Gen universe online has an active, growing and thriving fandom on simegen.com where you can read samples and whole novels free and pick up the new publication news and meet the authors personally.

Live Long and Prosper,

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice series, but this book is frustrating
I've really enjoyed the first couple of books in the Savage empire series - especially the first three books.

This fifth book is an exception though.

The first part of the book just continues some things started in the fourth book - and that's ok.

--- SPOILER ALERT ----

But the behavior of (mainly) Torio and Melissa in the handling of the bad guy Maldek is ridiculous.
Maldek had murdered and mutilated uncountable numbers of people (thousands) and was clearly still thinking that everyone around him is his possession to do with as he likes - but the group of heroes doesn't step in to help other (good) people attacking him - so of course he kills them too.
They even save his life when he is dying as a result of the confrontation.
And after that they continue with their stupidity by restoring his Powers and keeping him in charge of the land.

When he then (of course) tries to rape one of the heroes (Melissa) - they still keep him alive (Melissa being mad on her boyfriend Torio for almost killing the monster when he defended her) - and break up the love-couple (Torio, Melissa) to appoint Melissa as a guardian over Maldek - without any means to keep him in check, except her own powers (will she never be tired, never sleep?).
How can Torio leave his love Melissa behind with that monster?
Are we poor readers still supposed to see Melissa and Torio as sane people after this story?

I understand that keeping some enemies alive and some heroes in a situation that can be improved is useful for a writer of a series, but this (for me) was not an acceptable way to do it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Magic, adventure and suspense!
Nessie and the Celtic Maze, written by Lois June Wickstrom and Jean Lorrah and illustrated by Sara Silvestris Strand, offers the magic, adventure and suspense of scuba travels into a maze between Scottland and Canada, where monsters lurk and bravery is required to rescue a Princess in distress. That the Princess is herself a monster serves to heighten the intrigue. The authors' "trademark" science is artfully woven into this gripping story that pits a child's parental disobedience against acts of noble heroism. The book engages the reader from fascinating beginning to exhilarating end. Terry Verduin (pen name: V.R. Duin) ... Read more
