5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Star Trek novels
The story opens with the Enterprise locked in battle with a Klingon ship. Although the battle is fierce and there are many casualties aboard the Enterprise, the Klingon ship is destroyed. One of the more serious casualties is a young officer named Carl Remington. He stays at his post and fires the weapons that save the Enterprise. His wounds are neurological and so severe that there appears to be no hope.
However, a new technique has been developed on Vulcan that can cure previously fatal neurological damage. Spock is aware of it because his mother Amanda is currently undergoing the treatment. Therefore, Captain Kirk immediately sets course for Vulcan so that Spock can be near his mother and Remington can have a chance at life.
The Enterprise arrives at Vulcan and Remington is placed in stasis to allow the healing to occur. Remington and the wife of a Vulcan physician are both killed when an unknown saboteur causes their stasis fields to fail. This sets Captain Kirk off on a detecting trek by setting himself up as the next target. His plan succeeds and he barely avoids being killed by both a predatory animal and a predatory plant.
What makes this story so superb is the great deal of new information about Vulcan and the culture. We also learn about Spock's childhood and how he reprogrammed a school computer to give students who have tormented him poor grades. There is also a great deal of information about the mental marriage bonds between Vulcans and about how justice is meted out on Vulcan. T'Pau, the powerful matriarch introduced in the original series episode "Amok Time" plays a leading role as Captain Kirk interviews her as a possible suspect in the murders.
This is one of the very best Star Trek novels, the genre is never better when it explores cultures and the acts of races found on other planets.

5-0 out of 5 stars The title story alone deserves five stars!
Take your favorite Darkover novel, compress it into a few pages but leave all the emotional impact in place -- that's "The Keeper's Price."I notice that MZB and Lisa Waters kept coming back to Hilary Castamir's charcter, and I wish there had been a novel about her.:)

Leaving aside the brilliance of the title masterpiece, the rest of the collection is strong and well-organized.Even the stories I didn't like as much at first ("A Simple Dream" comes to mind, as does "Ambassador to Corresanti") have grown on me.I've read and re-read this collection probably twenty times in the past year.I still want to read it over again. These are wonderful stories!

I also appreciated how well-organized this collection and _Sword of Chaos_ were, and wish the anthologies had continued to print stories in approximate chronological order.

Oh well. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader
The planet that these people live on has a mutated humanity, split into two dominant forms, the Simes and the Gens.

The former exists as a type of energy vampire, using the others as a food and energy source.

When a wealthy young man's girlfriend turns into a Gen, he realises that something is wrong, and tries to save her rather than sell her into slavery, basically.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lichtenberg is the queen of character-driven drama
I first read this novel in high school, and it left quite an impression. The world of Sime/Gen is split into two groups. The dominant Simes who must kill and drain the energy fields of Gens to survive, and Gens, who are bred like cattle. Both Races are humanoid, except Simes have tentacle like appendages which come from their forearms when they are 'hungry.'

Rimon Farris is a son of a Gen breeder, a man who breeds and 'harvests's Gens to sell on the Sime market. When Rimon's girlfriend Kadi matures and develops Gen characteristics, Rimon will do anything to save her from the auction block.

This is an excellent series, sure to delight fans of science fiction and character-driven drama. The Sime/Gen conflict is interesting and creates believable tension throughout. Don't miss this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone who cares about others
First Channel covers the beginnings of a new way of cooperation in a future world of impossible strifes and distrusts. When Rimon discovers his girl has 'turned out wrong', he risks his life to save her - and finds outthat she is the one capable of saving him. How they work out a new life ina hostile land, gather around them a few others who prefer cooperation overkilling, and found a new way of life is a good read on many levels:frontier adventure, relationship adventure , and learning to challenge oldassumptions.

I read it about twice a year, just for the joy of it.

4-0 out of 5 stars This series should be reprinted!!!
I also read these books in years past. Both the channel series and the dashau series.I would like to get my hands on copies again and reread. They were inventive, with great character development.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant,InsightfulSeries;Extends the Reiki/Aikido concepts
The Sime-Gens Novels were the most innovative I have ever read. i wish they would return to print so that I could give them to others to read ... Read more
