Product Description

This intimate memoir of the tempestuous marriage between Jan Gabrial, a young, aspiring American writer, and British novelist Malcolm Lowry takes us through the highs and lows of this passionate, troubled relationship. Lowry began writing his best-known work, Under the Volcano, during their marriage, while the two were living in Mexico. He based the character of Yvonne on his wife. Now, for the first time, Jan Gabrial tells the true story of their lives during those heady years, and provides a compelling portrait of a troubled artist, a bright and independent young woman, their deep love and bitter struggles, and her positive role in the creation of his work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Equally as important as Pursued by Furies
I heard excerpts of this book at a symposium for Lowry in 1996. The person reading this memoir said it would only be available after Gabriel's death so I'm assuming she has passed on. I was very moved during the reading in 1996 and I was no less moved when I finally was able to read the entire book. Gabriel has a very poetic and flowing style of her own. She is very honest throughout the book as she writes about her tragic relationship with Lowry. This book won't make you happy but it will give you insight into their relationship that you can't find anywhere else. On that level, it is as equally important as Pursued by Furies. In the end, we get to see a sympathetic character in Jan Gabriel that counters Lowry's portrayal of her in Under the Volcano. We also get an insights on Lowry from the most important period of his creative life. ... Read more

Product Description
Although his literary reputation rests primarily on his novels, Malcolm Lowry (1909--57) considered himself to be a poet, and he composed an extensive poetic canon. No reliable edition of Lowry's poetry has been available until now. Increasing critical interest in all aspects of Lowry's life and work prompted the preparation of this complete edition of his poetry, in which the poems are located, identified, dated, arranged, collated, annotated and explicated by biographical, critical, and textual introductions. The sections of Lowry's text are chronologically arranged to reflect his artistic development and are preceded by short essays describing the specific issues raised by those poems. The opening section -- Lowry's poetic juvenilia -- reflects his fascination for the sea, as does the ensuing section, "The lighthouse invites the storm", his first collection of poetry, a sequence of related semi-autobiographical poems, which depicts the adventures of the characters Peter Gaunt and Vigil Forget. Lowry composed most of "The lighthouse" in Mexico; following it in this edition is a small group of uncollected Mexican poems. The next two sections of text -- Dollarton 1940--54: Selected poems 1947 and Dollarton 1940--54: Uncollected poems -- reflect and record the experience of Lowry's sojourn on the lower mainland, and its deep effect on him. All of the poems are fully annotated. The appendices contain sections of song lyrics and undated fragments, as well as a remarkably coherent group of love poems written between 1949 and Lowry's death in 1957. This edition provides Lowryans with ready access to the latest determinable authorial versions of, and the textual histories for, the canon's 490 poems, which range in date from 1925 to 1957. By using this edition, readers will be able to reconstruct every version of every Lowry poem. Product Description

Malcolm Lowry (1909-57), the influential British author and adventurer best known for his cult classic novel Under the Volcano, described Liverpool as "that terrible city whose main street is the ocean." Lowry was born on the Wirral side of the river Mersey, and his relationship to the Merseyside of his youth informs all of his writing, while Liverpool itself continued to hold tremendous significance for him--even though he never returned.

Published to conicide with Lowry's centenary, Malcolm Lowry showcases a variety of creative and critical approaches to Lowry and his work. Contributions from international scholars, creative writers, and visual artists--including Lowry's biographer, Gordon Bowker; poet and broadcaster Ian McMillan; and author Michael Turner--reveal Lowry's global presence and adventurous spirit, while contributors from the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada, and Mexico reflect both on Lowry's "voyage that never ends" and on their own journeys. Accompanying full-color illustrations demonstrate Lowry's influence on contemporary visual artists. Malcolm Lowry will be an indispensable companion for anyone interested in the legacy of this remarkably cosmopolitan creative icon.

Product Description
From 1939 to 1954, Malcolm Lowry lived and wrote in a shack near Dollarton, in North Vancouver. It was here that he revised and polished Under the Volcano until it was almost ready for publication, and here that he experienced his happiest and most productive years. His posthumously published works are filled with references to the landscape and lifestyle he enjoyed while living in BC.Now, for the first time, these Vancouver years are the focus of a Lowry study. The words and letters of AI Purdy, Earle Birney, George Robertson, and many others shed light on the great novelists's method of working, his view of the world and the fascinating, paradoxical character that was Malcolm Lowry. Extensively illustrated with photographs of people and places Lowry knew, Malcolm Lowry: Vancouver Days includes maps and a selected bibliography. ... Read more

Sherrill Grace's introductory essay describes the influence of Lowry's work on artists working in other media. She also includes an important letter from Lowry to the Norwegian writer Nordahl Grieg, published here, with annotations, for the first time.Jan Gabrial, Lowry's first wife, provides an intimate glimpse of Lowry in a biographical story which has been out of print for more than forty years, Hallvard Dahlie documents the connection between Lowry and Nordahl Grieg, and David Falk conjures up an image of Lowry "groping his way through a labyrinth of paper" in an attempt to salvage himself and his texts.Christine Pagnoulle considers the major Volcano translations, Hilda Thomas astutely relates Volcano to contemporary politics and writing, and Frederick Asals provides a valuable study of the evolution of the Volcano manuscript.Joan Mulholland illustrates the centrality of speech acts in a Lowry text, Sue Vice successfully locates Lowry within the vanguard of post-modernism, and Donald Jewison links Lowry with Elias Canetti, Jorge Louis Borges, and Umberto Eco.Cynthia Sugars returns Lowry's Dark as a Grave to the critical limelight, Victor Doyen chronicles the extraordinary gestation of Lowry's final work, October Ferry to Gabriola, and Elsa Linguanti argues that the stories in Hear us O Lord from heaven thy dwelling place are among the best of Lowry's work.Suzanne Kim analyses his creative process and the significant "figures" within Lowry's poems and Mark Ellis Thomas makes a convincing case for the need for further study of Lowry's poetry.Graham Collier, a British jazz composer, discusses the compositional similarities betweenLowry's texts and "free jazz"; Robert Kroetsch -- poet, novelist, and critic -- weaves the Lowry voice into his own "celebration of the anguish and ecstasy of creation."The suitability of Lowry's work to investigation by a variety of approaches and the array of international scholars who have contributed to this collection confirm Lowry's reputation as a major twentieth-century writer and make this book an exciting contribution to Lowry studies.

Product Description
From the beginning, John Sutherland recognized that his literary gifts lay in criticism rather than in poetry. His independence from the academy and his largely autodidactic training gave him a unique perspective as a critic of Canadian literature. What these letters document, beyond a purely personal struggle, is a period (1942-1956) of great importance in the development of Canadian poetry, and it is above all the nuts and bolts of that development that they bring into keen relief: the economics of publishing books and literary magazines in the days before The Canada Council, and the difficulty, if not the impossibility, of trying wholly to live a life in literature at that time. ... Product Description
Since the publication of "Under the Volcano in 1947, controversy has raged around the figure of Malcolm Lowry. Both the novels and their creator have remained enigmatic: is "Under the Volcano", his major work, a realist novel, autobiographical, sybolist? Is it best approached linguistically, psychoanalytically, when set in its cultural context? Lowry has also defied definitive comment, partly due to myths he propagated about himself, which help confuse the historicl record. In these essays, specially written for this collection to mark the eightieth anniversary of Lowry's birth, ten writers give their own angle on the man and his work, offering new views to counteract the old. The biographical area is reassessed by a contemporary of Lowry's and by an examination of the very methodology of biography. Lowry is compared with Joyce and with "The Lost Weekend", and read in terms of Mikhail Bakhtin. He is examined in relation to his many father - figures, and to the characteristics of his language. He is placed in the Modernist context, and his "Hear Us O Lord From Heaven Thy Dwelling Place" has its shapes examined. Fittingly finally, a poem is offered at his graveside. ... Read more
