Product Description
From the luxury of London's wealthiest casinos to the poverty of an African shanty town, former Scotland Yard detective Roy Ranson has stuck relentlessly for 20 years to the trail of the missing Lord Lucan. Richard John Bingham, 7th Earl of Lucan, disappeared in 1974 after the vicious murder of his children's nanny and a near-fatal attack on his young wife, the Countess of Lucan. He has never been positively identified, despite a warrant for his arrest and a police hunt that has covered the world. Was Lord Lucan guilty of the cowardly attacks on the two innocent women that night? Or wrongly accused as he tried to save his wife from a mystery assailant who had already murdered the nanny Sandra Rivett? Is he alive and well, protected abroad by his many rich and powerful friends? Or dead at his own hands, and now lying beneath the murky waters of the English Channel? No one is closer to the truth than ex-Detective Chief Superintendent Roy Ranson, who led the original hunt for Lord Lucan. Never before has he revealed his full, authoritative knowledge of the case. With unique access to the Lucan inquiry, he disentangles the facts from the fiction.Roy Ranson's notable cases include the attempted kidnapping of Princess Anne and the theft of the Stone of Scone from Westminster Abbey. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Gripping Page Turner
A brilliant real page turner of a book. Written with great pace, with plenty of fascinating detail, the book starts by letting us to get to know Lord Lucan, the man, and the lifestyle he led. It moves on to dramatically reconstruct the murder itself and Lucan's subsequent disappearance. The book particularly excells when it moves on to searching for Lucan and thories about his disappearance are throughly examined and then rejected. The impression I gained was of thorough detective work leading to one inevitable conclusion.

It is a great story- and a true story. I could not put this book down. I lent it to my Mum and she was equally impressed. If you are interested in the Lord Lucan story- this is a must read book. ... Read more

Product Description

"... eminently readable, supple, and coherent... essential... " -- Choice

"... translated into English verse with great force and precision... " -- History

"There is... a very real need for a new poetic version, and Mr. Widdows has carried out the difficult task most creditably.... his translation is both accurate and readable, and in our age, so much kinder to baroque art than the ages that preceded it, he should have many readers." -- New York Review of Books

"On all counts this translation of the Pharsalia is a resounding success and will, one predicts, stand as the definitive English version. Readers... will welcome this verse edition by Widdows with its readability, accuracy, and, above all, its poetic sensibility.... Widdows' translation deserves acclaim, and both classicist and student of epic poetry in general will want this edition on their bookshelves... " -- Classical World

Told in a series of gripping, dramatic episodes, Widdows' powerful verse translation of Lucan's unfinished epic of the Roman civil war starts with the crossing of the Rubicon and ends with Caesar narrowly escaping death at the hands of the Egyptian army.

Product Description
Terry Culbert`s love of his Irish roots spawned this unusual look at the Irish-Canadian village which he grew up. Lucan, a half-hour north of London, Ontario, suffered a violent beginning with the massacre of five Donnelly family members in 1880. Those brutal slayings went unpunished. The first third of this book is Donnelly related, with many stories never published before. The retired television news journalist, photograper, and artist has filled his book with dozens of illustrations and photographs. The compilation of short stories not only includes The Donnellys, but village commerce, village life, sports, and music from past to present. Many of Terry`s stories focus on interesting characters and events that have contributed to Lucan`s rich history. Two and a half years in the making, Lucan: Home of The Donnellys is an engaging collection of Canadiana. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Putting the Donnelly Massacre in perspective with the town of Lucan.

The Donnelly (often referred to as the "Black Donnelys")Massacre,is the most famous true story of mayhem and murder in Canadian history. There is nothing that even remotely compares to it;even the famous Shoot-Out at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone ,Arizona. It happened at about the same time in a little town of Lucan,Ontario, about 20 miles north of London.
It is a story, which began in Tipperary,Ireland, and was carried to Canada. It involved long held religious and political animosities,Protestant and Catholic hatreds, fighting, drunkeness, barn burning, stage coach disputes, cattle theft, land squabbles, and just about everything that can surface when mayhem and murder continues for over thirty-five years, culminating in a Vigilante Committee of 35 or so of the community leaders, including the parish priest, leading citizens and even the Town Constable;brutally murdering 5family members,in the middle of the night of February 1880,and burning their home down with the multilated bodies in it. Though there was a witness ,a young lad, trials were held, but no convictions ever resulted. What happened on that awful night has such an effect on the town that nobody would even speak of it for generations, that is until a " pulp writer" with connections in the town,Thomas P.Kelley wrote a book in 1954,"The Black Donnellys" that brought the whole sorid story to light and sold millions of copies. This is probably the book that sold the most copies in Canadian history;and spawned several more over the years, all trying to separate the legend, fiction and truth of what happened and why.
What this author does is to write a history of the little town of Lucan, including that of the Donnellys, from the pioneer days up to the present time. The town did not become a "ghost town" as did so many such towns, but descendents of the people still live there, and many of the buildings still exist.130 years after the murders, while it is still a very sensitive topic, people are beginning to talk about it,though very cautiously and a small historical society is even creating a museum, including reference to it.
While this book gives some of the "Donnelly Stoy" ,there are several other books that tell much more.Three books," The Black Donnellys" by Thomas P Kelly," "Vengence of the Black Donnellys" also buy Thomas P.Kelley, and"The Donnelly Album" ,by Ray Fazakas are probably the three book that best tell the story, both from a fictional and true viewpoint.I wrote fairly extensive reviews on these three books on January 29,2006.There is also an excellent Website with lots of information and photographs.
There has also been plays, documentries, verse and songs recorded;but even though several attempts have been made or contemplated;the great movie that this story merits, still remains to be made. But someday it will.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Speedy international delivery, the description of the book was spot ion and also a gripping and acurateaccount of the Donnellys ... Read more

Product Description
Ever need a fact or quotation on Lucan? Designed for speechwriters, journalists, writers, researchers, students, professors, teachers, historians, academics, scrapbookers, trivia buffs and word lovers, this is the largest book ever created for this single word. It represents a compilation from a variety of sources with a linguistic emphasis on anything relating to the term "Lucan," including non-conventional usage and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities. The entries cover all parts of speech (noun, verb, adverb or adjective usage) as well as use in modern slang, pop culture, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in many unexpected examples for Lucan, since the editorial decision to include or exclude terms is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. Proceeds from this book are used to expand the content and coverage of Webster's Online Dictionary (www.websters-online-dictionary.org). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LUCAN - More Than A Book About A Boy Raised By Wolves.
Lucan is a book that spawned a short lived TV movie pilot and series that ran on the ABC network way back in the years 1977-78.Lucan was essentially about a boy lost in the wilds of Minnisota at a very young age who was raised by wolves.Found at age 10 years by hunters then captured by scientists he was forced back into human society. The buy named LUCAN by accident of him hearing a doctor say YOU CAN attempting to say YOU CAN it came out LUCAN which seemed as good a name as any other so it became his.

Well to make a long story short this book chronicles the first attempts of LUCAN to deal with being plunged into the politics and troubles of human society.Ok the idea is cool, the execution of the story a little hokey BUT, I am a severely disabled dude who was sort of forced out of himan society. For me LUCAN was like an inspiring empowering friend during my growing up.I like LUCAN was born and grew up on the outside of society and then was asked later to live within its rules. It was hard but LUCAN was my inspiration.I learned a lot about living in society from LUCAN.More than anything I learned it was worth trying to live in human society because of LUCAN.I will always owe a debt I can never repay to the writer of the book LUCAN and Kevin Brophy who played LUCAN on the 1977-78 TV series for lighting my path to my current great job and place in society.

Just in case you are wondering.Did I ever make it in society. Yes after 40 years of learning how to live in society at age 42 I have a job with the government as a software engineer.I am still a bit wild, certainly I am the strangest thing in the building where I work.I still have lots of minor issues but, its funny how I am well loved where I work dispite all the many things that make me way different.LUCAN was 20 years old in the TV movie in 1977 I was 18.I like thinking that somewhere in government LUCAN did well as I did and its working and making lots of money to live well.Hey its a disabled thing.Anyway buy the book its not the greatest writing but the story is filled with meaning and insights into the fight to live in this human society when your disability psychological makeup brain damage upbringing or other challenges make you so radically different from society you are forced to grow up outside it.Then only as you become an adult and must fend for yourself in human society are you asked to cope with the demands of life in the same human society you grew up outside of.This is the real message of LUCAN... Buy It NOW! ... Read more
