Product Description
An analysis on the system of finite complement clauses in early Modern English which is meant to be a contribution both to historical syntax and to the study of John Lyly's euphuistic language. Aims to offer clear exemplification of finite complement clauses during this decisive period. Preface This book is a revised version of a PhD dissertation submitted by Juan Carlos Garcia Lorenzo to the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) in April 2001. It examines an underresearched area, the grammar of complement clauses in Early Modern English (1500-1700), as illustrated in the prose of John Lyly. Prior to the diachronic analysis proper, concepts such as "complement clause" and "complementizer" are defined in Chapter 2; the discussion here, where the relevant literature is carefully assessed, will prove useful for historical and non historical linguists alike. Later chapters investigate in detail the syntax and semantics of complement clauses during the period under discussion and also the extralinguistic variables controlling their distribution across different syntactic environments. An exhaustive reference section, an index and twenty tables and charts complete the volume, which will no doubt become an important reference in the field of English historical linguistics. Teresa Fanego, PhD Professor of English Linguistics University of Santiago de Compostela November 2003 ... Read more

Product Description

His last known work and the only one to be written primarily in verse, The Woman in the Moon is among Lyly's most entertaining plays. Turning upon the construction of the female character, it has been read as highly misogynistic, and as a sixteenth-century feminist manifesto.  Newly edited from the first edition (1601), The Woman in the Moon will be of interest to all students of sixteenth-century drama. It is complemented by generous notes and commentary, as well as a full introduction and stage history.

Product Description
John Lyly, Shakespeare's forerunner in English comedy, wrote eight highly individual plays. This study of the plays, with each chapter devoted to a different play, concentrates on the courtly aspects of Lyly's work - he wrote all but one of his plays for court performance. In particular, it examines the relationship of Lylian drama to royal panegyric, a kind of writing which he did much to establish. However, the plays also present a parody of panegyric, and thus might also be said to have a counter-courtly aspect. The study also explores the ways in which Lyly uses "country" themes drawn from pastoral and Ovidian poetry to complicate his attitude towards the court and its culture. The plays included are: "Campaspe", "Endymion", "Galatea", "Mother Bombie", "Sappho and Phao", "Midas", "Love's Metamorphosis", and "the Woman on the Moon". ... Read more

Product Description
At a time when Shakespeare was still a struggling unknown, John Lyly (1554?-1606) was already the principal court dramatist and author of the period's best-selling prose work, the wonderfully elaborated and, in its day, much-imitated Euphues. To his contemporaries, Lyly was one of the major luminaries of the time; they would have been shocked by the totality of his later eclipse. A lack of modern editions meant that his work was neglected even by scholars. This edition brings his achievement before a wider audience, restoring him to his pivotal place in the English Renaissance. Three texts are included: a substantial extract from Euphues: The Anatomy of Wit, and the plays Campaspe (the first significant comedy of the English Renaissance) and Gallathea (which exercised a considerable influence on Shakespeare). The texts are edited from first editions; the extract from Euphues is the first modern spelling edition of the 1578 text. Leah Scragg's introduction and annotations contribute to the revaluation of this key figure in English literature. ... Read more

Product Description
John Lyly's "Euphues: The Anatomy of Wit and Euphues and his England", created a literary sensation in their own age, and had a profound influence on Elizabethan prose. This modern-spelling edition of the two works, the first for nearly a century, is designed to allow the twenty-first century reader access to this culturally significant text and to explore the fascination that it exerted. Attuned to the needs of both students and specialists, the text is edited from the earliest (complete) witnesses, richly annotated, and facilitates an understanding of Lyly's narrative technique by distinguishing typographically between narrative levels. The introduction explores the relationship between the dramatic and non-dramatic work, locating Lyly's highly influential plays in a wider context and Euphues' Latin poem in praise of Elizabeth I, translated for the first time, is discussed in an Appendix. A work of primary importance for students of Renaissance prose, this edition complements the on-going publication of Lyly's dramatic works in "The Revels Plays". ... Read more
