The principal objects which human punishments have in view are undoubtedly restraint and example; restraint, or removal, of an individual member whose vicious habits are likely to be prejudicial to the society'; and example, which by expressing the sense of the community with regard to a particular crime, and by associating more nearly and visibly crime and punishment, holds out a moral motive to dissuade others from the commission of it. ... Product Description
Around 1796, Mr. Malthus, an English gentleman, had finished reading a book that confidently predicted human life would continue to grow richer, more comfortable and more secure, and that nothing could stop the march of progress. He discussed this theme with his son, Thomas, and Thomas ardently disagreed with both his father and the book he had been reading, along with the entire idea of unending human progress. Mr. Malthus suggested that he write down his objections so that they could discuss them point-by-point.Not long after, Thomas returned with a rather long essay. His father read it and was so impressed that he urged his son to have it published.

And so, in 1798, Thomas Malthus' An Essay on Population appeared. Though it was attacked at the time and ridiculed for many years afterward, it has remained one of the most influential works in the English language on the general checks and balances of the world's population and its necessary control.

Volume 1 includes: Book I: "Of the Checks to the Population in the Less Civilised Parts of the World and in Past Times" and Book II: "Of the Checks to the Population in the Different States of Modern Europe."

ALSO AVAILABLE FROM COSIMO CLASSICS: Malthus' An Essay on Population-Vol. 2 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Second Edition
This is the second (1803) edition of Malthus' Essay on the Principle of Population, not the first (1798) edition. If you have already read the first edition, which is more commonly available, I would highly recommend getting the second edition, and reading it too,as the two editions are complementary works rather than duplicates of each other.Mathus really should have given the second edition an entirely new title, as it is in reality an entirely new work, although it is on the same subject. Either way, it is well worth your time and attention. ... Read more

Product Description
The Pickering Masters "Works of Thomas Robert Malthus" is the first and only collected edition of the works of this major thinker. Texts have been edited by an expert team to reflect the development of Malthus' thought. The collation of the texts of different editions of his major works show, both in small details and in the substantial development of the argument, the progression of the writer's ideas. Texts of the first and second editions of the "Principles of Political Economy" and of the second and sixth editions of the "Essay on the Principle of Population" have been collated and variant readings printed as footnotes. The first edition of Malthus' most famous book, the "Essay", is essentially a different work from the second and subsequent editions, and is here printed complete. ... Read more

Product Description
While millions face hunger, malnutrition, and starvation, the world's population is increasing by over 225,000 people per day, 80 million per year. In many countries, supplies of food and water are inadequate to support the population, so the world falls deeper and deeper into what economists call the "Malthusian trap," named for the writer whose work, more than any other, brought attention to the population dilemma. Philip Appleman's comprehensive introduction to Thomas Robert Malthus' seminal 1798 work traces the evolution of Malthus' idea and its validity through following generations.

The text is accompanied by explanatory annotations and excerpts from the revised edition (1803). Key eighteenth-century influences on Malthus are reprinted, including one by Benjamin Franklin.

Nine major assessments from the nineteenth century are reprinted, including—new to the Second Edition—those of Frances Pace and Harriet Martineau.

Contemporary commentary ranges widely through many schools of thought, from Lester R. Brown, Paul and Anne Ehrlich, and Garrett Hardin to Julian Simon and Pope Paul VI. All but one of the twenty-four selections are new to the Second Edition.

About the series: No other series of classic texts equals the caliber of the Norton Critical Editions. Each volume combines the most authoritative text available with the comprehensive pedagogical apparatus necessary to appreciate the work fully. Careful editing, first-rate translation, and thorough explanatory annotations allow each text to meet the highest literary standards while remaining accessible to students.
