Product Description

A seminal work in Latin America’s modernismo movement, this first anthology of verse by José Martí is available in a complete English translation for the first time. This accessible, annotated edition includes a critical introduction, presented in both English and Spanish, which explores the volume’s historical and literary contexts and addresses issues of the translation. Composed after domestic separation from his wife and infant son, and after his second exile from Cuba due to his involvement in the Guerra Chiquita, the 15 poems that comprise the collection demonstrate a poet-hero whose revolutionary spirit would ultimately lead to his participation—and subsequent death—in the conflict that freed Cuba from the Spanish yoke.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Welcome English Addition to Jose Marti's Poetry
Jose Marti maintained a balance between his expression of paternal adoration for his young son and the violence and prolonged frustration involved in his cause, a free Cuba, as he welded these topics into exquisite poems. This first complete English edition of "Ismaelillo" can be experienced by lovers of poetry who do not read Spanish.

Poets, more than non-poets, are able to see to the heart of the words of poems. Tyler Fisher's extensive knowledge of Latin American and Spanish literature and his ability as a poet give a truer English voice to "Ismaelillo." Dr. Fisher has accomplished this translation with finesse, insight and passion. As a poet, I say, "Ole, Dr. Fisher!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Marti: Poet and Father
This book of Marti's poetry--a reissue of the Cuban poet's first published collection of 1882, written for his then 3-year-old son--has all the impulse of a father's love and the eloquence of a poet's imaginings. Many readers know Marti primarily--if not exclusively--for the lyrics of the song "Guantanamera"; yet there is far, far more. This excellent bilingual edition (kudos to Tyler Fisher, from this writer who grew up in a bilingual household!) brings us Marti's voice: simple and profound, lyrical and fiercely imaginative, domestic and universal, to enjoy through repeated readings. (I've had the book on my desk for months now.) And Marti's love for his son and his country are so pristine and powerful that we are captivated by its universal relevance. The side-by-side bilingual rendition allows a reader who may be linguistically challenged to clarify meaning and to enjoy the fluid cadences and rhyme schemes of the original. The introduction and notes are thorough. Finally, this book by Wings Press, is handsomely printed and bound, a beautiful reproduction of the first edition of 1882. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How would Marti's reaction be upon beholding what Cuba has become
Marti, also known to decent Cubans as "The Apostle," became one of Latin America's icons of classic literature, war patriot, compassionate human being, poet, brilliant writer and journalist.

A man of the times, he's venerated today by every grateful Cubano who embraces freedom, democracy and human dignity.

I wish I knew what his reaction would be if he sees our beloved country being raped, physically and morally destroyed, and its flag desecrated by a band of atrocious murderers, megalomaniacs and hatemongers.

Most certainly he'll experience anger, shame, or a wind that blows out the lamp of his powerful mind.

Product Description

López examines the role of José Martí’s writing on concepts of Cuban nationalism that fueled the 1895 colonial revolution against Spain and have since continued to inform conflicting and violently opposed visions of the Cuban nation. He examines how the same body of work has come to be equally championed by opposing sides in the ongoing battle between the Cuban nation-state, which under Castro has consistently claimed Martí as a crucial inspiration for its Marxist revolutionary government, and the diasporic communities in Miami and elsewhere who still honor Martí as a figure of hope for the Cuban nation in exile. He also shows how, more recently, Martí has become an international as well as national icon, as postcolonial and New Americanist scholars have appropriated parts of his writings and message for use in their own self-described “hemispheric” and even “planetary” critiques of Western imperialist projects in Latin America and beyond.
As the first study to examine the impact of Martí’s writings on both Cubans and Cuban Americans and to consider the ongoing polemic over Martí as part of the larger postcolonial problem of nation building, López’s study also considers the more general issue of literature within nationalist projects. He illuminates the common concepts and ideas that underlie the ongoing ideological chasm between the Cuban nation-state and the Cuban nation in exile and offers the possibility of a new way of reading and understanding notions of national identity that have historically both enabled and delimited the ways in which Latin Americans and U.S. Hispanics have understood and defined themselves.

Product Description
... 4-0 out of 5 stars My impression / From the back cover
This book appears to be carefully laid out to present the ideas of Jose Marti.Spanish is used on the left-hand page, English on the right, and the paragraphs are numbered for ease in matching them up.

From the back:

Revolutionary, hero of the Cuban War of Independence, poet, essayist, Jose Marti is a towering figure in the intellectual and political history of Spanish America. The thoughts gathered here in a bilingual edition show the breadth of his concerns as well as the depth and clarity of his intellect, and are still timely in the last quarter of the Twentieth Century.

Carlos Ripoll exiled himself from his native Cuba in 1960.He has lived in New York City since then, where he currently is Professor of Romance Languages at Queens College. In 1969 and 1971 he was awarded grants by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Research Center of the City University of New York to facilitate his work on Jose Marti.Professor Ripoll is the author of five books and many articles on the great Cuban thinker, as well as others on Latin American letters.
