Product Description
"The next best thing to not having a brother (as I do not) is to have Brothers."
Gay Talese

Here is a tapestry of stories about the complex and unique relationship that exists between brothers. In this book, some of our finest authors take an unvarnished look at how brothers admire and admonish, revere and revile, connect and compete, love and war with each other. With hearts and minds wide open, and, in some cases, with laugh-out-loud humor, the writers tackle a topic that is as old as the Bible and yet has been, heretofore, overlooked.

Contributors range in age from twenty-four to eighty-four, and their stories from comic to tragic. Brothers examines and explores the experiences of love and loyalty and loss, of altruism and anger, of competition and compassion—the confluence of things that conspire to form the unique nature of what it is to be and to have a brother.

“Brother.” One of our eternal and quintessential terms of endearment. Tobias Wolff writes, “The good luck of having a brother is partly the luck of having stories to tell.” David Kaczynski, brother of “The Unabomber”: “I’ll start with the premise that a brother shows you who you are—and also who you are not. He’s an image of the self, at one remove . . . You are a ‘we’ with your brother before you are a ‘we’ with any other.” Mikal Gilmore refers to brotherhood as a “fidelity born of blood.”

We’ve heard that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. But where do the apples fall in relation to each other? And are we, in fact, our brothers’ keepers, after all?

These stories address those questions and more, and are, like the relationships, full of intimacy and pain, joy and rage, burdens and blessings, humor and humanity. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars brilliant compilation
In many ways, this book changed my conception of family. The complexity of sibling relationships is perhaps the least discussed and most complicated of all family dynamics. While there has been much written on the topic of sisters, this book is bold and rare.

Of course, the writers (Gilmore, Wolff(s), Menaker & McCourt, to name a few) are sublimely talented. Their investigations of these unexamined and universally experienced territories are fascinating. Some speak of competition and complexity (see Kazinski) while others depict great loyalty and love. None of the stories in this book are predictable or saccharine sweet. This book is gem, one which I highly recommend to anyone who has a brother, father or son.

4-0 out of 5 stars Siblings
Moving and refreshing narratives by multiple male authors who are talented and accomplished in many fields, and who have had mixed or tension filled relationships with their brothers. The writing is surprisingly robust and encompasses a wide range of emotional experiences.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Brother Book YET
This books amazed me. I couldn't put it down.I loved the 26 stories about love and rivalry between brothers.Amazed that one brother read a full page story in a newspaper and knew that it was his own brother that HE was the bad, very bad brother. He turned in him which made him sad but I would have too, so would you.

Are you a brother by the same mother? Are you a sister of a brother by different fathers? Are you a wife to a husband and also a brother and sister (if you are that is sick) ?

This book will change your life! When Penthouse interviewed me they summarized the interview with..."Whether or not you have a brother, whether or not you have a mother, sister or father you'll enjoy the entertaining, affecting tales collected here." --Penthouse (June 2009)

Ted and I would dress up pretty.Very pretty. He would put on red shiny high heels and cry for the dog to stop barking (our dog, a Newfoundland...BIG BIG dog.....didn't like shiny red high heels...black were okay). Sorry(I degress).

Ted battled and boozed, worshiped, envied, argue and will one day die in prison for his shameful acts. Try not to think of your own brother. Your brother will never do what my brother did so don't worry. Be more worried about your mother using a cucumber.

Edited by Andrew "The Book Man" Blauner, is somewhat titled as 26 Stories of Love and Rivalry.Bi the end of the book you will wish upon a star that there were a single word for that fraternal somewhat and whatnot emotion ("love"?). I hope this last sentence made sense to you...it did to Ted in his mind.

There was nothing gay about (I use gay as in the 1930's happy happy way...happy) the brothers growing up and dressing up.It was a wonderful, funny, complex, crazy-[...], relationship between brothers.

At times this book is down-right potty-mouthed.Some three and four and even five character words are used. I recommend you do not read this book to your children as a bedtime story.

His younger brother relates how he used to push Ted on a swing in the backyard and Ted would yell (loudly) higher Higher HIGHER now Now NOW or I will bomb your [...].At the highest Ted would JUMP out of the swing and launch himself into the sky yelling "I am an astronaut and you are not!!!" but then he would land on the rocks and cry while still all dressed up and in red shiny high heels. He wanted to beat gravity but just couldn't.

Later in life Ted and his brother both married Bambi.Bambi was an eyeful. She too would wear red shiny high heeled shoes with jeans, dresses, PJ's, and swim suits. She was hot.HOT I say.Ted and Dave would get drunk and fall under the table singing songs about how they both loved Bambi.I cannot repeat the lyrics here. Some of the songs were disgusting in nature. You will need to buy the book to see the uncensored songs starting at page 387.

I was choked up and after reading the book wanted to meet Bambi (not the gay happy brothers...). I located her in Wyoming and we met at Disney World.Yes, she still wears the red shiny high heels shoes. I love Bambi.I am going to publish a book titled "Bambi In Red Shiny High Heels - I Love Her - So Will You".My book will be on Amazon and will sell more than the Bible bless his soul. Please pre-order today!Don't buy Too Fat To Fish.Who wants a fishing book?
