2-0 out of 5 stars Skip This Visit to Whitehorn
Maddie Kincaid is a barrel-racing cowgirl and a very good one. Then a freak accident during a competition injured Maddie, taking her out of the rodeo world for a least a month.Alone, she goes home to Whitehorn, Montana to stay with her brother. Her brother, recently married, asked a friend, Dr. Noah Martin, to check up on her while they were on their honeymoon. The moment they met sparks flew and both had their own personal demons causing them to fight their attractions.

This story/plot had so much potential and it fell miserably flat. The prologue and the first 3 chapters were the best part of this book. The rest was nothing but a bother just to get to a lackluster ending. And I usually love the endings of most romance novels.First the heroine kept saying that she was a levelheaded, mature female despite her youthful age.But you question that when she kept making stupid, irrational decisions that could easily hurt herself or someone else at every opportunity.I just could not like or respect her.The hero wasn't so bad.He cooked, cleaned, rich and little bit dominating. But he had some commitment issues. So, with our heroine, he finds that he attracted to her, but vowed not to make a move towards his friend's sister and of course, they succumb to their passion about a few chapters in and immediately regret it afterwards. If this was real life, I would actually believe that they would divorce eventually.(And I normally don't think that after a read a romance). The hero didn't even tell her that was divorced and the heroine knew he was hiding something. It appears that they seem more in lust than in love. How they fell in love and realize the fact in a week is beyond me.

It was not all bad.The writing was well done. Some of the scenes were funny and the emotions were well received. However, I found it to be a waste of reading time and money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sucking my will to live
This book is painful to read.

The heroine is one dimensional and difficult to empathize with in her constant baseless and ludicrous fights over nothing.

And in all my life, living around America, I've never heard anyone speak like she does. The colloquialisms intended to lend flavor and accent to the country western character were cartoon-like and unbelievable. It's as though the author created her heroine after watching Doris Day's portrayal of Calamity Jane, not realizing it was intended to be an amusing caricature for a 1950s audience.

Yosemite Sam in a dress would have seemed more authentic as a contemporary American woman.

Come to think of it, the author *did* describe how short the character was.Sufferin succotash! It *was* Yosemite Sam!

5-0 out of 5 stars Noah and Maddie-SPOILERS
Favorite scene with Maddie-
Putting a stop to Nurse Connie Adams.

Favorite scene with Noah-
Being asked to join the hospital board.

Together-
The ending after Maddie puts a stop to Nurse Connie Adams.

What did you like about Maddie-
Her love for her horse.

What didn't you like about Maddie-
Her selfishness.Only thinking about herself and taking stupid risks.

What did you like about Noah-
Putting up with someone like Maddie, although I did question why.

What didn't you like about Noah-
Not telling Maddie about Felicia, at least not yet.Being a loner and complaining about having to check up on Maddie. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Super history of the nation's most beautiful highway!
If you were ever interested in finding out more about how highways were built before the Interstate system, this is the book for you!The Merritt Parkway and its extension the Wilber Cross Parkway remain marvelous designs to this day and are still enjoyable to travel on during every season. If you are from Connecticut or nearby New York, this book offers a wonderful historically perspective. The photographs are large and clear and the pages of the book are a good weight. In addition to being a good read, this book promoted a lot of family converstion about the history of the road.My great-Grandfather, for example, was the first person to ever drive over the Sikorsky Bridge built to connect the Merritt Parkway to the Boston Post Road in Milford, CT.This made the book seem all the more personal to me knowing that my family had played a part in Connecticut's history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating 19th Century Travel Accounts
A history of how the road began plus wonderful firsthand accounts from the writings of people who traveled the road in it's heyday. Find out what is was like to ride in a carriage or wagon, and partake of the hospitality of taverns in the early to mid 19th century. Find out also what it was like to take a nostalgia trip on the road when it had fallen out of favor due to competition with railroads and traffic was scarce. Eerily reminiscent of today's Route 66 nostalgia buffs who gaze upon the ruins of old cafes and gas stations and think about days gone by. On the National Road in the 1870s, travelers could meditate on the ruins of taverns, smithies and toll gates. Some of the selected writers have a real gift for language and will touch your heart.

There are maps and illustrations throughout the book. The maps are not detailed enough to use for attempting to drive the road today, to the extent that it's possible. There is a chapter toward the end about a modern-day trip down the road. It is not detailed enough to use as a guide but may very well pique your interest enough to seek out such a guide. I know I'm intrigued enough to see if one exists. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Evalutaion
This book is much better interesting than other books that I've had before in other history classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inventive approach (vol. 2)
I am developing a course in the History of Technology in America for my local community college, and find this book an invaluable resource. There is a hard-back one-volume edition as well as a soft-cover two-volume edition available. The authors hail from Harvard, Yale and MIT, with backgrounds in history, politics and technology.

This is an American history with a difference. While the student and instructor will find the basic chronological outline of American history that is familiar, the development of themes here often draws in much more explicitly than the normal text the issues of technological innovation, scientific discovery, manufacturing and business development as engines for growth and progress in the course of American history. The authors state in their introduction that Americans 'have long considered this penchant for innovation a distinguishing feature of their culture and history.'

Technology in terms discussed here is hardly confined to the modern age.For example, very early in the text the authors state that the development of maize/corn 'was perhaps the most important plant-breeding achievement of all time' - the creation of a stable staple food crop that was adaptable and resilient spurred the growth of civilisation in dramatic ways. Technology includes that related to architecture (from the earliest buildings in the Native American cultures to modern skyscrapers, bridges and underground complexes), agriculture (the aforementioned maize development being but the earliest of these examples), transportation technologies (from canals to railroads to automobiles and aircraft), medical technologies (from early hygiene and vaccine developments to modern pharmaceutical and genetic innovations), information technology (telegraph and telephone to digital and internet), and much more.

History is naturally selective, and any history text is going to have to walk the fine line between being thorough in development and being comprehensive in scope. The whole work weighs in at well over 1100 pages (inclusive of index and appendices), which is a lot of material for a two-semester course that will include supplemental readings. As an overview of American history, it hits the high points well and develops many sidelines of interest. My own particular teaching responsibilities for this will be to students who are primarily interested in technical education - this method of developing American history has more appeal for this audience, given its more direct applicability to their courses of study.

In the two volume edition, the first volume covers the pre-Columbian scene in the Americas through to the era of Reconstruction following the Civil War; the second volume goes through the presidency of the current George W. Bush, and includes issues of 9-11 and the issues of ongoing wars against terrorists. There are CD-ROM supplements that come with the books, which include many helpful elements for the students, as well as some multi-media offerings. These are keyed to chapters in the text.

The text is written in an interesting and informative manner, with appropriate use of humour and wit as situations permit. For example, from the text on the exhibition in London's Crystal Palace in 1851, the authors write:

'Among the winners was the New York firm of Day and Newell, manufacturers of locks. In one of the more flamboyant competitions, an employee of Day and Newell successfully picked the locks of several well-known English lock makers, while an English locksmith failed to pick Day and Newell's locks. The American won a cash prize for his efforts, while the Bank of England, whose vault he opened, subsequently placed an order with Day and Newell for a new set of locks.'

The text is supplemented by a very generous sampling of graphics, pictures, woodcuts, maps, charts and other colourful elements.Every page has some element of colour and something to make it visually interesting apart from the text.

This is a wonderful book for undergraduate courses in American history as well as for general readers who want to refresh their knowledge of American history.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed!!! too general!!!!
I usually dont write reviews even though sometimes it's a bad product but I really am very disappointed with this book. The author did a very poor job!! this book would only be helpful for someone who had never and I really mean who had never taken a multiple choice test before. This book did not live up to its standard at advertised by the author.Through out the book, the author only briefly mentioned some techniques and never again elaborate on it.

The techniques(not much) listed can be find over the internet! That's another great disappointment. It was soooooo general that it doesn't worth the $15.It's only 76 pages and the author spend the first 50% elaborating on how well the book might be, but the other 50% just quick general (too general) points.

I also bought other books along with the mastering multiple choice by stephen merritt for a lesser price and the content of the multiple choice portion for those books came out to be greatly explain and very good.

the reason I am so upset is because the other books i bought ranging $5-$8 and they have such good content and info comparing to the mastering multiple choice by stephen merritt. If you dont see a new edition come out, don't buy this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quick read...Could be cheaper that $15
The good thing about this book is that it was a quick 45 minute read. I thought it might contain more information than it did since it came highly recommended on a professional exam forum. That being said, there really isn't any magical or new method for taking a multiple choice exam. The book clearly states that at the beginning. The techniques quickly taught in the book stem from introducing the reader to the reason for multiple choice exams.

I think the $15 price tag I paid was a tad expensive given that the book was about 25 pages. I feel the book could be more succinct, therefore less pages and cheaper as some paragraphs rambled on.

In conclusion, the book helped me reinstate my faith in the test-taking principles I knew while I learnt 2 other points I wished I knew while still at university.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
If you have trouble with the multiple choice format, and if studying for this type of exam is a challenge, this is the book for you. Quick read with great insight and very specific approaches to improving your test taking skill.

3-0 out of 5 stars disappointed!
The title of this book, 'Body Of Evidence', led me to believe that there was some suspense or mystery to these somewhat weak tales of romance. I was wrong. The murder is simply the means to bring the two lovers together. The attempts at detailing any investigation are very superficial and would never lead to an arrest in the real world. Then there are the characters, particularly in Jackie Merritt's tale. They are actually annoying.Who would ever love someone who always wimpers and tells you she is not attracted to you?Justine Davis' selection is well written but cannot save the book. I will apologize to Pickart because I was too bored to start her episode. The idea of following a murder from the beginning of the investigation until the verdict was compelling, but it was too hastily thrown together for my liking. ... Product Description

In the tradition of great American rags to riches stories, Seven Iron Men weaves together the history of how the seven Merritt brothers discovered iron ore on the Mesabi Range. In 1890 they were poised to become one of the wealthiest families in America but lost it all to industrialist John D. Rockefeller.

“The tale of their long and furious quest makes for one of the most melodramatic stories in American history. . . . The Merritts leap from the chronicle in all the colors of life—especially Lon, the king of them all, with his maudlin poetizing, his childlike faith in mankind, and his incredible tropical hat. It is a tale full of thrills, shot with sardonic humors.” —H. L. Mencken, The Nation

“Certainly it is no small contribution to the history of the American people to unfold the tale of the discovery and development of those huge iron deposits of the Mesabi Range flanking much of Lake Superior. To these perhaps quite as much as to any other one factor the country owes its industrial supremacy in the ago of steel.” —New York Herald Tribune

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for anyone working with children
What is so wonderful about this book is that it contains explicit directions for reading activities that support the learning theories presented. It's not some esoteric treatise on reading problems, nor is it difficult to implement the activities described in this book.It also is progressive, so that more basic reading problems as well as higher-level problems are addressed equally.Furthermore, Crawley has also included some great hints on how learning can be supported in the home.On the whole, it is one of the most practical resources a reading teacher can have in his or her library.

Amazon.com Review
"The great glory of the Americans is in their wondrous contrivances," wrote Anthony Trollope in 1862. Even then, new technologies seemed to annihilate time and space. The first scheduled train ride, at 15 mph, was described as flying "on the wings of the wind," and the first transatlantic telegraph message was celebrated as an event of biblical proportions. Merritt Ierley, who looked at the development of household devices in The Comforts of Home, chronicles the technologies that have transformed our lives in transportation, communications, and entertainment, from the bicycle to the passenger airline, the telephone to the Internet, and the magic lantern to the DVD. Along the way, he describes how Americans have responded to these succession of wonders and offers insights into our mastery of complexity and the uncanny way each invention has presaged the next. --Lesley Reed ... Product Description
Proactive Risk Management provides product development teams and managers with a step-by-step process for managing innovation risk in an effective cross-functional manner. In addition to providing a formula, this book illuminates the rationale of managing project risks allowing project and product development managers to successfully adapt the process to their organizations and projects.

Proactive Risk Management's unique approach provides:

- A model of risk that is scalable to any size project or program and easily deployable as the risk management approach built into any product development or project management life cycle.

- Methods for identifying drivers (causes) of risks so you can manage root causes rather than the symptoms of risks.

- An appropriate quantification of the key factors of a risk that allows you to prioritize risks without introducing errors that render your numbers meaningless.

- A clear distinction between a risk and an issue and the different types of management they require.

- A vast array of supporting tools and strategies that support implementation of an effective project risk management program.

- Guidance on identifying and overcoming the organizational and cultural impediments that can block implementation of your risk management program.

Proactive Risk Management stands apart from much of the literature on project risk management in its practical, easy-to-use, fact-based approach to managing all of the risks associated with a project. The depth of actual how-to information and techniques provided here is not available anywhere else._____________________

Advance Praise for Proactive Risk Management:

"The authors present an easy-to-understand model and an easy-to-implement set of steps to successful risk management. This book should be required reading for project and product managers. I believe you can read it one day, implement it the next, and begin seeing results immediately. The model and approach presented here navigates the knife-edge between the obvious babbling and the philosophical musing that seems to dominate the risk management literature." Patrick Neal, Ph.D. PMP, Manager, Project Management Network, Agilent Technologies

"In our fast-paced environment, there is ever-increasing pressure to bring successful new products and services to market faster than before. This means that risk management is strategically important to the success of your project or venture. Proactive Risk Management provides proven techniques for assessing and avoiding risks before they hinder the results of your project. This excellent manual will be my standard reference on the subject from now on." Dr. Peter Maddern, Product Development Manager, Kimberly-Clark Europe

"Successfully managing complex product development projects -- and keeping effected customers, stakeholders and team members connected -- requires clear communication. In my experience as a leader of projects and project managers -- in Defense, Aerospace, Commercial Consumer Electronics, and Medical Devices/Bio Pharmaceuticals -- the most effective basis for that communication is risk identification and management. Proactive Risk Management provides an extremely practical guide to the tools, techniques, and strategies that best enable that risk-based communication. It is clear that identifying and accepting the "right" risks within a project can be a powerful competitive edge. Keep a copy of this book on your desk and in the hands of your teams - I will." Mike Shires, Vice President, Global Program Management, Baxter Healthcare

"This book clearly communicates the challenges of risk management in product development and provides simple, proven methods for addressing them. The authors' experience with managing risk in product development is clearly evidenced in their practical treatment of the subject. They take a holistic view of product development and illuminate the cross-functional nature of risk in product development. They then offer a straightforward procedure for managing risk and suggestions for implementing techniques in the real world." Kent Harmon, Director, Product Development Improvement, HPA Division, Texas Instruments

"You can read Proactive Risk Management, begin implementing strategies, and start seeing immediate results. For survival in these uncertain times, Smith and Merritt offer the straightforward procedures applicable to any product development project." Ruth Carter, Director of Program Management, InFocus Corporation

"Proactive Risk Management provides the right amount of depth and breadth in its discussion of ways to model, predict, measure, and control risks that arise in projects. It is written in a style that is easy to read and understand; a style that makes you eager to apply the knowledge to your own projects. I am sure that I will go back to it repeatedly for insights and tactics." Dr. J.M. Radovich, Director, Research & Development Fenwal Division, Baxter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, Applicable and Focused Read
This was a great book that I have already started to use; it helped to frame what a true program should look like but also provided room to insert some things that I already do - very valuable.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beginner's "Reader"
I really tuned into the title "Proactive" Risk Management -- expecting to learn some new and valuable risk management techniques, and I relied heavily on other reviewer's comments; unfortunately, my take on this book is quite different from theirs -- and that's why I'm writing -- so that others won't be misled, as I was.

I was quite disappointed in this book; I feel like I wasted my money.Normally I read such books very carefully; highlighting interesting and/or important points, and take lots of notes; however, this book is almost un-marked, and I took no notes.

As a PMP-certified project manager, I like to see books such as this relate their material to the Project Management Institute (PMI)'s PMBOK.

The authors made passing reference to the PMBOK early in Chapter 1, but that was about it; they didn't specifically relate their content to PMI's PMBOK, and given PMI's stature as industry standard, I consider that to be a significant omission.

If you're new to the area of risk management, and want an easy-to-read "How-To," you might enjoy this book.

However, if you're an experienced project/risk manager, I'd recommend you buy something else.

As for me, I'll put it on my bookshelf, where it will probably simply gather dust. I found this book to be merely a "re-hash" of other material, with little information that that I didn't already know, i.e., "lightweight," a beginner's introductory "Reader".

5-0 out of 5 stars Giood coverage, and practical
I liked the coverage, and felt the book was of practical value.
It wasn't just a lecture, teaching generic terms, it explained how to use the concepts and what to avoid.

Plan ahead. What can go wrong that I can do something about, and plan for that well in advance.Concentrate on 7-10 things that can be managed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly practical
This is one of the best books I have read in a long time on the important topic of risk management. The treatment of the standard risk model is complete, easy to follow, and very practical. Some of the other bonuses include organization/facilitation tips for risk identification workshops, and proposals for tools and reporting formats. The material will quickly lend itself to practical applications in the work place for those who are interested in improving the risk identification and management practices in their organizations.
Possible improvements to the book could include more technical examples related to product development (the book uses the risk of `heart attack' as an example throughout the book), and a CD with electronic versions of the tools and reports that are proposed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Informative
Over the years, I have encountered nearly every kind of risk in software projects.I found the suggestions in this book for risk analysis and risk management to be simple, clear, and actionable.

If you're a project manager or a team leader, you need to read this book or one very much like it.Otherwise, you're likely to lead a project without knowing or controlling its risks.

If you are not in a leadership position, use the concepts in this book to evaluate your leaders. That way, you can find out early how things are likely to turn out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Coyote's Cry (the Coltons)
If you have ever read any of these stories. You would know that they are the best. The series is written by different Authors, they all do an excellent job with the stories. So it is hard to tell you about just this one. So if you ever come across any of "The Coltons" buy them and read them. It took me awhile but I found them all (I hope). If it is possible I would like to read more if they could write some. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Text book purchase.
One of the most SUPERB all-around transactions I've had on Amazon.com -- super fleet shipment; clean copy in excellent condition; no fuss or follow-ups on order whatsoever.Straightforward and hassle-free -- everything expected and more from an on-line transaction.TERRIFIC!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Collection of Milton Available
This is the best collection of Milton works available that I know of: sturdy, with thick white pages offering ample room for note taking, numerous footnotes, rare works such as Christian Doctrine (which is extremely interesting)and writings from people who knew Milton. Nothing more needs be said. The price, $40 something, is insanely cheap if you consider how much you're paying per work - probably comes out to a couple dollars each.

A lifetime of Milton resides between the durable covers of this book, inexhaustible hours with one of the greatest writers of the English language. Truly, this is one of the most enjoyable books I own.

5-0 out of 5 stars A COLLEGE TEXT I"D BUY AGAIN
Coming from someone who was so frugal that my choice of major in college was influenced by the fact I could find most required reading for a dual degree in philosophy and English literature in the library rather than pay my hard earned money for books that were not worthy.... this is my strongest possible recommendation:This was one of the few texts I actually shelled out money for in college without regret and would even purchase AGAIN! ( My copy was destoryed by Hurricane Isabel) I have fond memories of studying Milton, and when he seemed at his most confusing the notes in this text were wonderfully clear.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best edition
Others have suggested the Norton is the edition for college students.I disagree. The Hughes edition is definitely worth the money. The notes arethe best -- in reading criticism on Milton, there's usually plenty ofreferences to Mr. Hughes's notations themselves. This is the standard, accepted text. This is the complete poems, with his Latin and Italianpoetry appearing ajacent to an English translation. There's a generousselection of Milton's prose, too.

Spend the wad and buy the book.Ifyou're reading this, then you're a bibliophile, no doubt. For the rest ofyour life wouldn't you prefer to have the best edition of Milton on yourshelf, or will you be satisified with a $9 Signet Classic?(I tossedmine.)

Check out the Dore Illustrations for PL, too.

BTW, afterreading Areopagitica, I believe that everything Jeffereson said was a debtto Milton.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Text to Own
This is still the most extensive, best-annotated, one-volume Milton set available. As the blurb above indicates, Hughes presents all the poems and prose in chronological sequence, so it is easy to trace the great poet'sincreasing facility, and later mastery, in both areas. We start withMilton, the fifteen-year-old student, translating Psalms from the Hebrew aswell as passages from the love poems of Ovid and Properius. We then followhim to Cambridge, where he really starts assimilating all his classicalstudies, first fashioning imitative Latin elegies followed by his firstpoems of native genius, "On the Morning of Christ's Nativity,""On Shakespeare," "L'Allegro and Il Penseroso."

Hughe's edition is invaluable as a tool for students, scholars, or generalreaders. The notes never get in the way of the text, but will lead thereader to relevant sources should he/she desire to learn more about a givenallusion or want morebackground. If the reader is patient, and actuallyreads all the material that comes before "Paradise Lost", he/shewill be rewarded with a richer understanding of Milton's magnum opus. Please be advised that if you have made it that far, don't stop there."Paradise Regained" and "Sampson Agonistes" arepowerful examples of epic poetry as well. I personally feel that"Paradise Regained" has had almost as large an impact on modernfiction in particular (Dostoevsky and Flaubert are prime examples)as has"Paradise Lost."

Blake said that Milton was of Satan's partywithout knowing it. Actually Milton's prose does open up some interestingpossibilities in that sphere. In "Areopagitica" he advocates forthe necessity of evil. He was, as history has amply recorded, hardly adefender of central authority. He was emphatic about individual liberty andwouldn't be dictated to by Pope or King.

There are several short earlybiographies of the poet at the end of the book. All paint a portrait of anidiosyncratic genius who suffered numerous setbacks both physical andpolitical, particularly in his last decades. He was an extraordinarilybrave man, who has taken some heat from Virginia Woolf and later feministsfor his "ill use" of his daughters, who, the line goes, he keptin ignorance and near slavery so that they could aid him as ameneunsesafter he went blind. If such detractorshad actually done any wide readingon the subject (Shawcrosse is an excellent source) they would not have madesuch charges. Though not what could be described as a "lovingfather," Milton certainly never inveighed against his daughters toremain "indentured" to him, nor did he subvert any marriage plansthey arranged (none were forced into "arranged marriages" either, though the practice was still common in that era). He didn't tutor them inthe Languages he asked them to transcribe, per se. But this begs thequestion, if they were'nt taught Latin, Greek and Hebrew, how would theyhave been able to act as scribes in those languages in the first place?

I'm sorry to see that this volume is now almost $100. In this day oflarge trade paperbacks, perhaps a more affordable edition will beforthcoming. ... Read more

Product Description
The Golden Gate Bridge is a marvel of engineering and architecture considered by many to be one of the world's most beautiful bridges, its picturesque vistas favored by photographers, artists, visitors to San Francisco, and almost everyone else. When naysayers said it couldn't be built, Joseph Strauss and a team of visionaries spun 80,000 miles of wire and riveted nearly 900,000 tons of steel into gossamer wings, spanning for the first time an immense gulf and linking the Pacific coast.
In black-and-white photography, Historic
Photos of the Golden Gate Bridge details the history of the bridge from its design and construction to recent times. Nearly 200 rarely seen images offer a compelling look at the bridge, from the days when the treacherous currents of the Golden Gate could be crossed only by boat to the rise of the bridge as a national landmark. This book is sure to delight both those who dream of the impossible and those who live to make it happen. ... Read more
