Product Description
In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the philosophy of John Stuart Mill has never been more relevant. Can we reconcile individual liberty with the demands of the common good? John Fitzpatrick argues that, properly understood, Mill's liberal utilitarianism can indeed support a system of rights rich enough to guarantee individual liberty. Combining fresh interpretations of Mill's writings on ethics, politics, and political economy with the historical Mill that can found in his autobiography, the book will be of substantial interest to a wide audience. ... Product Description
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things..."One of the foremost figures of Western intellectual thought in the late 19th century, John Stuart Mill offered up examinations of human rights, morality, personal and societal responsibilities, and the striving for individual happiness that continue to impact our philosophies, both private and political, to this day.In this essay-first published in Fraser's Magazine in February 1862, and later in Mill's 1868 book *Dissertations and Discussions*-the great philosopher considers the American Civil War while it was in progress, and deems it worth fighting for the emancipation of American slaves and to put an ending to the United States as a slave nation. One of the most stirringly moral arguments ever put forth to justify a war, this is also one of the most powerful and compelling arguments ever for human dignity and freedom as something worth fighting for.English philosopher and politician JOHN STUART MILL (1806-1873) served as an administrator in the East Indian Company from 1823 to 1858, and as a member of parliament from 1865 to 1868. Among his essays on a wide range of political and social thought are Principles of Political Economy (1848), Considerations on Representative Government* (1861), Utilitarianism (1863), and The Subjection of Women (1869). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read for Bad Times
This is a book to be read and reread every few years. With all the irrationality in the world today, this book gives one hope. It's hard to pick a favorate but I've reread the chapters on Marcus Aurelius and John Stuart Mill many times with great pleasure.Blanchard's ideas as well as his beautiful literary style and wonderful story telling are amazing. It's not often that a book about ideas is also a great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A triumph by this century's greatest rationalist
Brand Blanshard, twentieth-century philosophy's greatest exponent of rationalism, here turns his pen to an examination of reasonableness in action, as exemplified in the lives of Marcus Aurelius, John Stuart Mill,Ernest Renan, and (Blanshard's own favorite exemplar of the "rationaltemper") Henry Sidgwick. Though himself a rationalist, Blanshard wasnot under the illusion that only avowed rationalists could be reasonable,as his selection of examples clearly shows. In each essay, he presents alucid and sympathetic account of his subject's life and thought in aseamless combination that deserves to be called "philosophicalbiography."

While this volume is of course highly informative abouteach of its four subjects, it also of interest as regards Blanshard's ownthought. He was ninety-two years old when he wrote this delightful andhighly readable work, and his examinations of these four men distill alifetime of his own reflections on the role of reason in the ordering ofhuman affairs. A final chapter -- "The enemy: Prejudice" --summarizes his mature views on the nature and importance of the rationaltemper.

The entry under Blanshard's name in the _Oxford Companion toPhilosophy_ closes on an uncharacteristically personal note:"Blanshard's personal demeanour," writes the entry's author Prof.Peter H. Hare, "was one of extraordinary graciousness." Thatgraciousness, evident throughout his work, is especially so here, whereBlanshard deals less directly with philosophical questions and moredirectly with reasonableness as instantiated in actual human lives; hisgenerosity and sympathy (much neglected rational virtues!) are almostpalpable. If the rest of us could absorb something of his rational temperand spirit, our lives and the life of the world would undoubtedly betransformed for the better. And there is no better place to begin than thisvolume by a great man whose religion was the service of reason.

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy read of a complex topic, this is worth seeking.
Wow! Who'd have thought that an author could approach such a topic as "reasonableness" and render it so well-defined, so palatable and so attractive.By using four historical examples, with focus not primarily upon their philosophies, but more upon their lives, Blanshard is masterful. As a noted philosophical and social commentator in his own right, the author does an excellent job of inserting his own interpretation on the four subject persons, and upon their historical & intellectual significance.Last, and maybe most important, is Mr. Blanshard's ability to communicate clearly. As far-fetched as it may sound, this book is truly a page-turner!I'd recommend this to anyone who feels the need for a book that makes you go, "Hmmmm."At the very least, it will leave any reader with an increased appetite for more reasonableness in his/her own life. ... Product Description
In this well-researched, comprehensive study of J.S. Mill,Professor Habibi argues that the persistent, dominant theme of Mill'slife and work was his passionate belief in human improvement andprogress. Several Mill scholars recognize this; however, numerouswriters overlook his 'growth ethic', and this has led tomisunderstandings about his value system. This study defines andestablishes the importance of Mill's growth ethic and clears upmisinterpretations surrounding his notions of higher and lowerpleasures, positive and negative freedom, the status of children, thelegitimacy of authority, and support for British colonialism. Drawingfrom the entire corpus of Mill's writings, as well as the extensivesecondary literature, Habibi has written the most focused, sustainedanalysis of Mill's grand, leading principle.
This book will be useful to college students in philosophy andintellectual history as well as specialists in these fields. ... Read more

Product Description

More than two hundred years after his birth, and 150 years after the publication of his most famous essay On Liberty, John Stuart Mill remains one of the towering intellectual figures of the Western tradition. This book combines an up-to-date assessment of the philosophical legacy of Mill’s arguments, his complex version of liberalism and his account of the relationship between character and ethical and political commitment. Bringing together key international and interdisciplinary scholars, including Martha Nussbaum and Peter Singer, this book combines the latest insights of Mill scholarship with a long-term appraisal of the ways in which Mill’s work has been received and interpreted from the time of his death in 1873 to today.

The book offers compelling insights into Mill’s posthumous fate and reputation; his youthful political and intellectual activism; his views on the formation of character; the development of his thought on logic; his differences from his father and Bentham; his astonishingly prescient, environmentally sensitive and ‘green’ thought; his relation to virtue ethics; his conception of higher pleasures and its relation to his understanding of justice; his feminist thought and its place in contemporary debates and feminist discourses; his defence of free speech and its fundamental significance for his liberalism; and his continued contemporary relevance on a number of major issues.

This book will be of interest to students and scholars of Politics, Political Theory, Philosophy, History, English, Psychology, and also Cultural Studies, Empire studies, nationalism and ethnicity studies.

Editorial Review

Product Description
The work bearing the above title is an octavo volume, consisting of twenty-eight chapters, and five hundred and sixty pages. This is no great amount of print; but the amount of matter contained in it is prodigious, and the quality of that matter such as to require a full stretch of attention. Mr Mill gives his readers no superfluous sentences, scarcely even a superfluous word, above what is necessary to express his meaning briefly and clearly. Of such a book no complete abstract can be given in the space to which we are confined.

To students of philosophy--doubtless but a minority among the general circle of English readers--this work comes recommended by the strongest claims both of interest and instruction. It presents in direct antithesis two most conspicuous representatives of the modern speculative mind of England--Sir W. Hamilton and Mr John Stuart Mill.

Sir W. Hamilton has exercised powerful influence over the stream of thought during the present generation. The lectures on Logic and Metaphysics delivered by him at Edinburgh, for twenty years, determined the view taken of those subjects by a large number of aspiring young students, and determined that view for many of them permanently and irrevocably.[1] Several eminent teachers and writers of the present day are proud of considering themselves his disciples, enunciate his doctrines in greater or less proportion, and seldom contradict him without letting it be seen that they depart unwillingly from such a leader. Various new phrases and psychological illustrations have obtained footing in treatises of philosophy, chiefly from his authority. We do not number ourselves among his followers; but we think his influence on philosophy was in many ways beneficial. He kept up the idea of philosophy as a subject to be studied from its own points of view: a dignity which in earlier times it enjoyed, perhaps, to mischievous excess, but from which in recent times it has far too much receded--especially in England. He performed the great service of labouring strenuously to piece together the past traditions of philosophy, to re-discover those which had been allowed to drop into oblivion, and to make out the genealogy of opinions as far as negligent predecessors had still left the possibility of doing so.

Product Description
Wendy Donner contends here that recent commentators on John Stuart Mill's thought have focused on his notions of right and obligation and have not paid as much attention to his notion of the good. Mill, she maintains, rejects the quantitative hedonism of Bentham's philosophy in favor of an expanded qualitative version. In this book she provides an account of his complex views of the good and the ways in which these views unify his moral and political thought. ... Read more
