4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read!
I have been an L.M. Montgomery fan since I was 10 years old. Now, as an adult, I think I appreciate her even more.Though the Anne books will always be my favorite, I had to read this simply for knowing it was the author's own favorite.

Despite some reviews calling this book condescending, unlikely, or overly sweet, I saw it almost as a reflection of my own childhood amongst my own group of siblings and friends - only set 100 years earlier. You must keep in mind these are stories written for children and no doubt meant to be a role model for them to be happy to do what is right.

What Montgomery never fails to do is create characters.Like Anne Shirley, she creates characters that become real to her readers, that makes us happy to know them in literature and sort of wistful not to know them in reality. The Story Girl creates a group of characters that play off of one another and that grow more likeable in the reader's eye with every turn of the page.I appreciate rather than resent the continual reminder that while The Story Girl is not beautiful, she is captivating - it gives the average girl something to aspire to.

The stories that The Story Girl tells are humorous and clever, and while written for children, Montgomery always manages to throw in some humor that an adult can appreciate and enjoy.I couldn't put this book down and will likely read it again and again in years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books
Listen. Those of you who were calling it infantile when it refers to the children. Have you ever read Dickens? Now THAT makes me cringe, some of the things they say.

4-0 out of 5 stars Real life, but sweeter
Like most Lucy Maud Montgomery stories, The Story Girl is about what life is really like, only slightly sweeter and more magical. She captures childhood in all of its intricacies and makes the reader care for the characters like they're her own childhood friends. You may not close this book having learned anything new about life or having developed any new ideas, but you will close it having made new memories that will feel as dear as your own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely...just lovely
LM Montgomery said herself that this was her most favorite book of all her works, and i just have to agree. although this is not my favorite land setting, the story just flows smoothly and naturally; flawless. the story girl will enchant everyone, her witty mind and bewitching voice, she is a wonderful story teller. everyday is an adventure for the children: Beverly (the one is telling the story), Felix, Cecily, Felicity, Sara Ray and the Story Girl; always learning something new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
This book was probably written for young people. But Montgomery has an excelent knack of describing children's life on a farm in the late 1800's and putting it into a very interesting novel. I would suggest Montgomery's books as a must read ... Read more

Product Description
This volume of Lucy Maud Montgomery's journals records a time of great change and upheaval both in Montgomery's life and in society. When she wrote the first entry in this volume she had recently become a world-famous author, having published Anne of Green Gables in 1908. Here we become privyto her response to the death of her grandmother, her marriage and honeymoon trip to Scotland and England, and her departure from Prince Edward Island to the new restrictions of her life as the wife of a Presbyterian minister in an Ontario village. Montgomery reveals the intensities of friendships, the minutiae of homemaking, and the joys of motherhood along with the traumas of a disturbed marriage. By turns tart and sentimental, sharp-sighted and anxiety-ridden, L.M. Montgomery provides a compelling record of her remarkable life against abackground -- both social and literary -- of a tumultuous period in Canadian history. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Distasteful side of a famous author
To me, Volume II of this famous children's author's diary was an extraordinarily disappointing revelation of her character.I had read Volume I, which depicts L.M. from a young girl to age 37, and basically, I enjoyed that - however, L.M.'s groans about, and growing martyrdom over, caring for elderly grandmother, did begin to wear on me.

Still, that was not nearly so bad as getting to know more about the deepening of L.M.'s possessive, frequently selfish and self-obsessed nature as is revealed in Volume II.For example, there's L.M.'s obsessive re-recounting of her relationships with old flames while copying out her old journals; the judgmental attitude toward persons in her household and many other people (except toward those who she favors with affection). Her obsession with HERSELF, and how circumstances affect HER, is something unpleasant to read.

She is also somewhat vain. Her journal entry on her 45th birthday notes that no one could take her for a woman above 30 years of age.Huh.Her photographs tell an entirely different story.

I felt that L.M.'s emphatic mourning of the death of her dearest woman friend and cousin, Frede, was unbalanced (and to give L.M. credit, she admits in the pages of this journal that she almost always carries most of her emotions a bit too far.)While I pitied her as she recounted dealing with her husband's mental breakdowns, the distaste she reveals for him during the first onset of his illness, and utter lack of sympathy for the man's sufferings was really quite cold, although she did always do her duty toward him.

I still admire L.M.'s journal writing when it has to do with the natural world and her wonder over it.(Her absorbing interest and understanding of the natural world must be why THE BLUE CASTLE is such a terrific book.) And her character depictions and various stories can still be crisply on point; amusing, or touching, or all of these. It's when she's describing her feelings about negative circumstances in her life and the people around her - her relatives and friends and even just acquaintances - that another, less charitable and more self-obsessed side is revealed and all that charm is utterly lost.I felt I'd learned sides of this author that I wish I'd left undiscovered. The editor(s) of these journals give wholehearted admiration to L.M. Montgomery both as an author and as a person, but I'm afraid I can't.

5-0 out of 5 stars The journals
This is a fabulous work.As a teenager, I read all the novels published by L.M. Montgomery and absolutely loved them. The journals, though, add another dimension to her writing.I have read all 4 volumes of the published journals (supposedly there is one more to come) multiple times. These books offer a fascinating look into the upper middle class life style from the late 1800s to the mid 1930s when the author passed away. Some of issues she covers:
-a powerful look at World War I from the view of Ontario resident
-childbirth in the days before pain killers (she said a toothache was worse)
-her awe at scientific advance (when vitamins were discovered she realized why she was always so lethargic all winter)
-her husband's mental illness in the days before drugs
-meeting the who's who of Canada at the time
Absolutely fascinating for anyone who loves history!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Montgomery's Journals
VolumeII is easily the best of Maud's journals; it is the one that I "dip" into whenever I have a few moments or need a bedtime book andconsequently is starting to show some wear and tear. It covers the most dramatic points in her life--her marriage, birth of her sons, the discovery of her husband's mental illness, and the death of her best friend, as well as her most prolific years as a writer. She hasn't yet begun to hide as much in her journals, which makes the third and fourth volumes frustrating to read. Since anyone reading the second volume will probably go on to read them all, I should say here that third volume was rather tedious with the lawsuits and maid problems, and number four, though weirdly compelling, was painful to read as herimminent breakdown is all to evident--it is like watching a train wreck in slow motion. I wonder if the journals of her last years will ever be published-- I understand that there are problems with people still living, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book....
This book is fantastic! If you liked the previous "journals", you'll adore this one. It's more in-depth, full of emotion and a wonderful look at LM Montgomery's life at an incredibly interesting time in history. Can't wait to get to the next volume!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent insight into one of canada's most loved writers
These journals put the writing of this rather amazing woman into a newlight. It gives the joy she has given millions a new more brilliant glow. They are abridged, but the emotion of what was taken out is still present. It makes her prose inspirational by comparison to her experiences and heremotions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, but missing books....
Lovely collection, but... the title makes you think that it's complete, and it's not.I haven't checked over the other parts, but in the Anne collection, Anne of Windy Poplars and Anne of Ingleside are mysteriously missing.Wonderful for the price, but where are the missing books?

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly innocent
This series of books is a joy to read. Each morning when I walk my dogs, my Kindle treats me to a few more chapters, read aloud into my headphones.

The tales of Anne's adventures are fresh, sweet and innocent. One is whisked back to simpler times, transported by the graphic descriptions of everything around.

An Amazon review -

In 'Anne's House of Dreams', we are introduced to a whole new atmosphere. No longer is Anne running dreamily into magical forests and delighting in fairy brooks, listening to the whispers of the trees or playacting as a Fair Maiden with her childhood friends. The fairy-tale, static forests of Avonlea are replaced with a vast sea, salty breezes and spicy scents of seagrass in the air. Whereas the previous books were stuffy and melancholic, this book is wonderfully refreshing and light. Instead of feeling that everything is going to end (growing older, beloved characters dying, leaving Green Gables and Avonlea), we find ourself anticipating Anne's new life as a married woman.

And the plot construction! I've never read an Anne series with a plot so tight and focused. The twist at the end concerning Leslie's husband was the cream of the crop, and I've also enjoyed the beautiful life-story of Captain Jim. Even Anne and Gilbert are involved into this snug plot. They are mostly the benefactors of the events: Gilbert's idea to cure Leslie's husband and Anne's idea to have Captain Jim's life-story written down.

Product Description
Anne of Green Gables. L.M. Montgomery was inspired to write this great classic, by a number of things. One piece inspiration came from an old piece of paper that she had written when she was young, in which she described a couple that had been accidentally sent an orphan girl instead of the expected boy, deciding to keep her anyway. Montgomery also pulled from more young memories, taking from her experiences in Prince Edward Island.Amazon.com Review
When Marilla Cuthbert's brother, Matthew, returns home to Green Gables with a chatty redheaded orphan girl, Marilla exclaims, "But we asked for a boy. We have no use for a girl." It's not long, though, before the Cuthberts can't imagine how they could ever do without young Anne of Green Gables--but not for the original reasons they sought an orphan. Somewhere between the time Anne "confesses" to losing Marilla's amethyst pin (which she never took) in hopes of being allowed to go to a picnic, and when Anne accidentally dyes her hated carrot-red hair green, Marilla says to Matthew, "One thing's for certain, no house that Anne's in will ever be dull." And no book that she's in will be, either. This adapted version of the classic, Anne of Green Gables, introduces younger readers to the irrepressible heroine of L.M. Montgomery's many stories. Adapter M.C. Helldorfer includes only a few of Anne's mirthful and poignant adventures, yet manages to capture the freshness of one of children's literature's spunkiest, most beloved characters. There's just enough to make beginning readers want more--luckily, there's a lot more in the originals! Illustrator Ellen Beier creates vibrant pictures to portray the beauty of the land around Green Gables and the spirited nature of Anne herself. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great classic for children
I first read the abridged version of Anne of Green Gables from my school library as a kid. I read it because I really liked the summary given at the back. But after sometime I forgot all about it. When my sister bought the unabridged version of this book I started reading this book with a renewed interest and greater understanding about the plot and character.
Marilla and Mathew have lived in the Green Gables for as long as most of the people of Avonlea remember. Marilla persuades Mathew to send for a boy from the orphanage to help in their farm. But they are surprised when a talkative 12 year old girl with an overactive imagination arrives instead of the boy they had sent for. Red-headed Anne with her hot temper and romantic ideas causes havoc in the peaceful society of Avonlea. But with her jovial and good nature she soon wins over the practical minded people of Avonlea.
Anne ,the protagonist of the book has an overactive imagination which get her into scrapes many a time. She loves romantic namesand instantly flares up if any one teases her about her hair. She is headstrong and mostly jumps into things without thinking twice. Though she is liable to get into trouble but she does try to get out of them by telling lies.
Marilla, who has no experience in bringing up children,is always brisk in her mannerisms and is practical minded.
Mathew is the shy and introvert brother of Marilla. Though he lives in mortal fear of young girls he develops an instant likeness for Anne. Mathew though rarely goes against Marilla's wishes is ever ready to twist some rules for Anne's happiness. He is a hard working man and is happy to handle the farm on his own. He has an unwavering belief in Anne.
I think Anne as a character reminded me a lot of myself as a kid, with an unecessarily overeactive imagination.Though the book starts with the right speed but by the end of the book it becomes a little too fast, so much so that the reader tends to lose the track of time in the book. Like most books it's not the only the story which makes a book readable but also how the story is told. Montgomery takes a simple story of the everyday life a young orphan girl and manages to win the heart of the readers. The simple yet humorous way the writer tells the story keep the reader interested in story right through the book. Though there are other books on similar themes like the Anne of Green Gables but this book is unique in itself. While reading the book the reader would never feel as if they had read something like this before. The author stuck to the story right through the book. The storyline is not lost anywhere in between the book. Maybe that's what is special about this book- the author manages to tell such a simple story without once wavering from the plot. The readers would never feel that any character is bland. The author has defined all characters of the book so finely that the reader can almost imagine how a characters looks, walks or talks. The author has accomplished to make her characters breathe for the readers. All characters have their interesting points from the nosey Rachel Lynde to the practical Marilla.
Something that I didn't like about this book is that the author made the main character a little too perfect. Anne seems to be liked by most of the characters in the books which seems a little too unrealistic as even the best of people are not liked by many. Indeed the author has shown all most all of her characters as saintly people . But I recommend the people to read this book at least once.
What I liked best in the book was the innocence of the main protagonist of the book. Though she is gets into a lot of scrapes but she never intentionally breaks the rules. The humorous yet fascinating way in which the author has described the antics of Anne won the book for me. Anne has managed to win my heart by her romantic ideas and far fetched imagination.

Recommended?

I would like to recommend it to all children over the age of eleven and to all adults who want to refresh their childhood memories. It is a really good book for light reading. The story connects with all of at one point or the other. Be it the regular scrapes we got into when we were children or the absurd ideas we had about various things. Mrs Lynde could remind the readers of their nosey yet good natured neighbour. This book teaches us take pleasure in simple things in life and to put people before riches.
Some other similar books I recommend are the Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and What Katy Did by Susan Coolidge. Though these two books are different from the Anne of Green Gables in many respects but they all relate to the everyday lives of young girls. While Little Women is about the five March sisters who learn to live happily even in poverty while their father has gone off to the war, What Katy Did is about the tomboyish twelve year old Katy Carr who learns to happily face the adversities of life. Those who liked this book may also like to read the other parts of the book which follows Anne's story in various stages of her life. Though the other books are too are good but my firm favourite is the Anne series. Maybe this is so that I am a bit partial towards books written with humour in it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Anne of Green Gables
I like all of the Anne books I have read so far, my least being Rainbow Valley. I like Anne's humor - chatty and and peppy- and I like most of the characters. I give the entire series four stars. I just finished House of Dreams, and it may have been my favorite in all. I really like Anne of Green Gables.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Anne of Green Gables
Anne of Green Gables is the story that comes to mind when I think about the books I read alone as a child.

There are very few in the readers world that are unfamiliar with this story. The movies made were fantastic and Megan Follows the perfect choice to play Anne with an E, but nothing can compare to the original story.

I picked up Anne of Green Gables because I was challenged on Twitter to pick up a book I loved and read it, instead of picking up a book I should be reading. I read half of the book in a single evening, devouring it with the same satisfaction that I would my mom's potato salad or my grandmothers Texas cake.

My favorite scene in the book is when Anne, just after her performance at White Sands, speaks to the girls and talks about how she likes being just Anne of Green Gables. I'm a person who loves and cherishes home and that, I think, is why I love this book so much. Anne understood me as a child, a teenager and as an adult. She was my literary kindred spirit, as I'm sure she was countless others as well.

One last thing before I wrap this sentimental review up. I still own the 1983 Junior Illustrated Edition of Anne of Green Gables. This is the only book I've read the story in. It's spine is broken and some of the pages are loose and stained with fingerprints or sustained water damage. The illustrations inspire memories of their own, laying on the top bunk of the bunk bed in my grandparents basement, sitting on the big, green chair in my parents living room, eating a sandwich at the battered, scuffed dining table. Each illustration felt like an old friend had emerged from the shadows of my memory and waved hello, and just like that, once again, Anne has inspired my dramatic imagination to flare again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic!
Anne of Green Gables is one of my all-time favorite books! I'm re-visiting some old classics from my youth this summer, and L.M. Montgomery's beautiful series about the "Anne girl" is at the top of my list. The story is well-known and loved - purely by mistake, plucky orphan Anne Shirley comes to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. They wanted a boy to help with the farm work, but what they got was a charmingly verbose little girl who quickly makes a place for herself in their lives. Anne gets into so much trouble that it would be nearly impossible to chronicle in a review without retelling the whole story, so suffice it to say that she is definitely the queen of the caper!

Anne Shirley is wonderfully relatable - she is a smart and creative girl, full of spirit and amazingly introspective for someone her age. Anne is a unique and entertaining character in a novel full of interesting characters - I want to be Anne Shirley when I grow up! From Marilla and Matthew to their curmudgeonly neighbor Rachel Lynde, Montgomery created a fascinating cast of characters that are impossible to forget.

L.M. Montgomery crafted a true masterpiece with Anne of Green Gables. The story is timeless and the setting is meticulously illustrated with a graceful use of words and phrases. The writing is simply delightful - there is true magic between the covers of this book!

"Mrs Rachel Lynde lived just where the Avonlea main road dipped into a little hollow, fringed with alders and ladies' eardrops, and traversed by a brook that had its source away back in the woods of the old Cuthbert place; it was reputed to be an intricate, headlong brook in its earlier course through those woods, with dark secrets of pool and cascade; but by the time it reached Lynde's Hollow it was a quiet, well-constructed little stream, for not even a brook could run past Rachel Lynde's door without due regard for decency and decorum; it probably was conscious that Mrs Rachel was sitting at her window, keeping a sharp eye on everything that passed, from brooks and children up, and that if she noticed anything odd or out of place she would never rest until she had ferreted out the whys and wherefores thereof."

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I rest my case - Montgomery's own words are the only ones that do the story justice. Pick-up Anne of Green Gables immediately if not sooner for a real adventure!

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh, what a perfect novel!
This book will always stand out in my memory as the first book that ever made me cry - and while hundreds of other books have brought me to tears since then, even in re-reading this book nothing makes me cry harder than this one! Re-reading this has given me such pleasure, that I think I will have to re-read the whole series! In fact, I don't know how far I ever made it in the series, I don't think I have read them all, to be honest. I am looking forward to this project! This book just fills me with such joy! What a perfect delight it has been to re-acquaint myself with Anne Shirley. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Charming warm story
"Anne of Windy Willows" by L.M. Montgomery

L.M. Montgomery continues a fine story of Anne, the freckled red-haired orphan on the edge of womanhood, sustained by her romance with Gilbert. In this book, even more than ever, Anne shows her cheerful side and finds a way around the difficulties, bravely facing "another bend in the road" until she makes many new friends out of enemies.

I have found this book to be hard to put down. Anne's personality sparkled through every page - the kind, helpful and romantic Anne that always manages to see the best in people.

The book is full of great scenery and unforgettable characters. For me, Little Elizabeth and Rebecca Dew were the most enchanting. Little Elizabeth reminded me of Anne a lot with her appreciation for nature and beauty, her believing in the better Tomorrow.Rebecca Dew seemed like a tough "tomato" on the outside, but inside she was a "kindred spirit".

"Anne of Windy Willows" is a true classic that is not to be forgotten with time.

"Anne of Windy Willows" is a sequel to "Anne of Green Gables", "Anne of Avonlea" and "Anne of the Island". In "Anne's House of Dreams" and "Anne of Ingleside" admirers of Anne can follow her into her marriage with Gilbert.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne on Her Own...
"Anne of Windy Willows" is the fascinating fourth book in L.M. Montgomery's superb "Anne of Green Gables" series.Anne Shirley, fresh from college and newly engaged, moves to Summerside, Prince Edward Island, to be principal and teacher at the high school. This book is better known to American readers as the renamed and slightly edited "Anne of Windy Poplars."

Anne lives at Windy Willows, an old house with an entirely suitable personality, owned by two widows, Aunt Kate and Aunt Chatty, and kept by their opinionated cook and maid, Rebecca Dew.Anne's new job comes with challenges, including the subversive opposition of the powerful Pringle clan, her mysteriously antagonistic fellow teacher Katherine Brooke, and the neglected neighbor child Elizabeth Grayson. The narrative is episodic, as Anne encounters a variety of interesting characters, and includes a couple of eerie ghost stories.Fiancee Gilbert Blythe is off stage at medical school, the audience for long letters by Anne that carry much of the narrative.Vacation visits to Green Gables keep Anne's treasured foster family and friends in the picture.

This Anne of Windy Willows is well worth knowing.Grown into attractive womanhood and secure in Gilbert's love, the good-hearted Anne is newly self-aware of her ability to affect the people around her through her sympathetic personality and her ability to share friendship. With increasing confidence and sometimes unintended and hilarious effects, Anne will seek to influence for good purpose the lives of the needy souls she meets.

"Anne of Windy Willows" was written 15 years after "Rilla of Ingleside."Montgomery seamlessly integrates this novel into the series, giving us a rich portrait of a young and independent Anne before the responsibilities of wife and mother began to change her life.Montgomery indulges in just a few foreshadowings that will be recognized by Anne fans.

"Anne of Windy Willows" is very highly recommended to her fans of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne's three years at Windy Willows, Summerside
"Anne of Windy Willows" is the English title of "Anne of Windy Poplars," because apparently the concept of a Canadian tree was too much for their English brethren (remember, these are the same people who changed Harry Potter's philosopher's stone into a sorcerer's stone). This is definitely the most atypical book in the Anne of Green Gables Series by Lucy Maud Montgomery. Although it is sold as the fourth book in the series it was actually one of the last one written, originally being published in 1936. Anne Shirley, B.A., has taken a job away from Green Gables and as Principal of Summerside High School for three years while she waits for Gilbert Blythe to finish medical school so they can get married. So Gilbert is only present when Anne writes to him as Redmond College in Kingsport (although Montgomery tactfully omits the romantic part of her letters). However, despite these oddities, "Anne of Windy Willows" has sort of become the second most significant novel in the series since it provides the foundation for both sequels to the "Anne of Green Gables" movies, both the 1940's "Anne of Windy Poplars" (with Anne Shirley playing Anne Shirley) and the 1987 "Anne of Avonlea." The latter purports to cover the second through fourth volumes in the Green Gables series, but clearly it is this one that readers will most recognize when they watch.

Anne's adventures as a teacher in a town where the haughty Pringle family aligns against her is but one of the three major plotlines in the novel. There are also Anne's experiences at Windy Poplars on Spook's Lane, where the figure of Rebecca Drew figures largely in Anne's correspondence, along with Aunt Chatty and Aunt Kate. Then there is the mystery of little Elizabeth Grayson, who has been looking forward to Tomorrow as long as she can remember. You see, her mother died when she was born and her heartbroken father has gone off in search of Yesterday. Of course, Anne Shirley is no more likely to put up with something so wrong any more than she would Jen Pringle's fake illness or Katharine Brooke's sourness. There are also visits home each summer to visit Marilla and Mrs. Rachel back at Green Gables. Consequently, "Anne of Windy Willows" is not just an afterthought from Montgomery, who manages to make it fit into the grand scheme of Anne Shirley's life. But let's face the truth here: Anne Shirley as a mother is not the "real" Anne, so going back and reading about her continued misadventures before she married Gilbert is just fine ... Read more

"As a child, Montgomery learned many stories from her great aunt Mary Lawson. She later used these in The Story Girl and The Golden Road.

Montgomery married on July 5th 1911 and left Prince Edward Island. She arrived at Leaskdale, Ontario in October, where her husband served as the minister of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church. She began work on this novel on April 30th, 1912, and gave birth to her first son on July 7th. She finished the novel on May 21, 1913, saying "I have been too hurried and stinted for time. I have had to write it at high pressure, all the time nervously expecting some interruption". The book was published on September 1st. It was dedicated to Mary Lawson." -Wikipedia. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne's House of Dreams
This is my definete favorite of "Anne of Green Gables." My favorite characaters were the Fords and Capt. Jim. Anne and Gilbert were great, too (who would have known that Anne married the person who called her 'carrots'?!). I liked the entire story-line, and it wasn't boring or pushed or anything. "Anne of Green Gables" is one of my favorite series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne and Gilbert, Together At Last...
"Anne's House of Dreams" is the fifth book in Lucy Maud Montgomery's superb "Anne of Green Gables" series. At long last, Anne and Gilbert return to Avonlea, she from three years as principal and teacher at Summerside, he from medical school, for a wedding among family and friends at Green Gables. They will begin their married life at the remote village of Glen St. Mary, in the seaside cottage that will become Anne's house of dreams.

In Glen St. Mary, Anne and Gilbert will make new friends: their beautiful but embittered neighbor Leslie Moore, the ancient lighthouse keeper and storyteller Captain Jim, and the abrasive but good-hearted spinster Cornelia Bryant.Anne's talent for deep friendships will be put to the test as the unique stories of each of her friends play out in "House of Dreams."

Anne and Gilbert will learn new roles, she as wife, housekeeper, and mother, he as husband, father, and as the new doctor in town. They will experience their first argument, over one of Gilbert's patients, and their first tragedy as a couple, regarding their first child. However, their love for each other will carry them, and the reader, to real joy in the life they will make together.

Thanks to Montgomery's superb prose and honest characterization, Anne is as irresistable in her newly married life as she has been in earlier books."Anne's House of Dreams" is very highly recommended to her fans of all ages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Anne Has New Dreams
Anne's House of Dreams is the fifth book in L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series. The book begins with Anne and Gilbert's wedding at Green Gables, and chronicles the first few years of their lives together through happiness and hardship.

Despite the fact that Anne and Gilbert finally seem to get their happy ending in Anne's House of Dreams, some of the magic of the earlier books is lost in this novel. I can't really put my finger on any one thing and say, "that's it - that's where it went wrong," but something is definitely missing.

Anne, of course, is still Anne - a young woman with a enviable zest for life, who seems to touch the lives of everyone around her - but one thing has changed: she's forsaken her creative dreams for a set of different dreams. It was a switch from the Anne I've come to know and love, and I didn't really care for it. Montgomery has also created another fabulously eccentric cast of characters, but they don't seem as well-drawn as past characters.

Thankfully Montgomery's writing is still beautiful. She was a master of descriptive and lyrical fiction:
"The garret was a shadowy, suggestive, delightful place, as all garrets should be. Through the open window, by which Anne sat, blew the sweet, scented, sun-warm air of the August afternoon; outside, poplar boughs rustled and tossed in the wind; beyond them were the woods, where Lover's Lane wound it's enchanted path, and the old apple orchard, which still bore it's rosy harvests munificently." Can't you just picture it? The one thing that remains wonderful about this series is Montgomery's wonderful style of writing.

Although it is not my favorite, Anne's House of Dreams is still worth reading. This novel has lost a little of the "feel" of the earlier books, but still makes a good addition to Anne's story.

5-0 out of 5 stars What I was looking for, exactly!
I am so very, very pleased that the book that was sent to me is identical to the cover shown on the product page! When I was younger, I only got the first 4 books of the series, and have only held off on purchasing the final 4 until I could find the matching cover style. I am VERY pleased with the book, as it is precisely in the condition it was described to be, and have the cover art I was looking for!

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne's House of Dreams
For those who love Anne of Green Gables, this book is one to cherish. It is the fifth book in the series. In the books between Green Gables and House of Dreams, Anne grows up, quarrels with Gilbert, goes to school, teaches, makes up with Gilbert, and gets engaged. In House of Dreams, Anne and Gilbert finally get married and settle down with a small medical practice in a cove on Prince Edward Island. They meet an interesting old lighthouse keeper with many stories to tell, Anne makes friends with Gilbert's patients and the townspeople, and gets pregnant. This is a marvelous love story, and one of the best of the series. I have been reading and re-reading these books since I was a child. I own the whole set, some in first editions, some in reading copies for friends. If you have read Anne of Green Gables, you will definitely love this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not in chronological order
I love Anne of Green Gables, but it was difficult to read them in order with this collection. Also, I could not find "Anne of Windy Poplars," or "Anne of Ingleside" in the collection.

2-0 out of 5 stars Font very difficult to read
I love the Anne books. But this compilation does not have the standard Kindle font.It looks like it was done on an old manual typewriter.I deleted the compilation, and went back for the individual books. They're fine (and free).

2-0 out of 5 stars Love the Book - hate the kindle book
I've read the Anne of Green Gables collection years ago and thought I would enjoy reading it again now.I purchased the kindle book and opened it.From there - things were awful. The font is tiny so it has to be adjusted to a much larger font then all of the other books I have purchased. The books as they are listed in the front of the kindle book are not in order. Anne of Avonlea was the first book listed and Anne of Green Gables was second. Then the font is much more difficult to read than the font than the normal type font used for books.
Although I would love to read the Anne of Green Gables Collection again - I think that I will either have to buy regular books or borrow them from the library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Anne of Windy Poplars
I'm still on Anne of Green Gables, but so far have not noticed the omissions of text (including Anne's prayer) that I noticed elsewhere. One thing I don't care for in this version is that it only shows chapter numbers, not names, but at least they are active links and if I had to choose one, I'd rather have full text than chapter titles. -- Of course, Anne of Windy Poplars is missing. I assume that is because it wasn't published until 1936 and is not in public domain yet. It also isn't offered separately for Kindle at this point, but hopefully if enough of us let the publisher know of our interest we can remedy that situation before long!

March 19, 2010: I am at a loss as to the problems people are referring to about the font and the order of the books. I have a Kindle 1, so maybe that is making a difference. Whatever it is, my fonts are fine and the books are proper order. It is true though that Anne of Ingleside is missing. Since that was published in 1939 the problem is most likely the same as with Anne of Windy Poplars. -- You might want to download the sample and make up your own mind about the font and what is and isn't included. I continue to be very pleased with it. :-)

March 20, 2010: Now I see what the problem is. There are two compilations. One has a purple cover and costs $1.00 and the other has a full color cover and costs 99 cents. For some reason, the reviews for the two different compilations have been merged and show up in both places. My review refers to the $1.00 edition with the purple cover. I checked out the sample for the other edition and it really DOES seem to be a mess. So, the negative reviews probably refer to that edition. ... Read more
