Product Description
Susanna Moodie, nee Strickland (1803-1885) was a British-Canadian author who wrote about her experiences as a settler in Canada. She wrote her first children's book in 1822, and published other children's stories in London, including books about Spartacus and Jugurtha. In London she was also involved in the antislavery movement. She continued to write in Canada and her letters and journals contain valuable information about life in the colony. As a middle class Englishwoman she did not particularly enjoy "the bush", as she called it. She and her husband moved to Belleville in 1840, which she referred to as "the clearings". In 1852, she published Roughing it in the Bush, detailing her experiences on the farm in the 1830s. In 1853, she published Life in the Clearings Versus the Bush, about her time in Belleville. Her other works include Mark Hurdlestone (1853), Flora Lyndsay (1854), Matrimonial Speculations (1854), Geoffrey Moncton (1855), The World Before Them (1868), George Leatrim (1875), Life in the Backwoods (1887). ... Product Description
Using correspondence and personal papers as well as their published works, this biography tells the tale of two nineteenth century women who travelled to Canada expecting to make their fortunes and join the cream of colonial society only to face desperate privation: forest fires, wild animals, frostbite and starvation. Their fortitude and hard-won success as writers and the first chroniclers of the native flora made them icons of early Canadian literature. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Canada's Unsung "Bronte" Sisters
I cannot believe that these women are not as well known in Canada as the Bronte's are in the UK and are not part of the high school curriculum's reading list. They are part of Canada's early "literati". These talented literary sister's story is an amazing, touching, even inspiring story of our early pioneering women who faced unbelivible hardship in an unforgiving enviorment of the backwoods with only the hap hazard support (at least in finacial terms) of their husbands. Their struggle gives testament to the early european immigrants who had none of the support enjoyed today and faced a much harsher enviorment. Their spirit is to be admired by any new Canadian immigrant and a eye opener for the rest of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sisters in the Wilderness

Product Description
When Roughing It in the Bush was published in 1852, it created an international sensation, not only for Susanna Moodie’s “glowing narrative of personal incident,” but also for her firm determination to puncture the illusions European land-agents were circulating about life in Canada. This frank and fascinating chronicle details her harsh – and humorous – experiences in homesteading with her family in the woods of Upper Canada.

Part documentary, part psychological parable, Roughing It in the Bush is, above all, an honest account of how one woman coped not only in a new world, but, more importantly, with herself.

The New Canadian Library edition is an unabridged reprint of the complete original text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not quite a feminist
Where was this book in the bra-burner days of the 1960's and 1970's:The Feminine Mystique meets Moodie, Judy Chicago inviting Susanna to The Dinner Party?Barely begin reading and you will want to give a swift kick in the pants (and wish that she had done it) to her ever-absent husband who dragged her back from honest mud of the pioneer life to the Cheney's and Halliburton's of mid-nineteenth century western civilization.

We are frustrated that she doesn't speak up to those who take and trample over her.Speak up, woman!Don't let them get away with it!

Her daughter and granddaughter were historic photographers who set milestones.Where were they mentioned in my history books or Girl Scout handbooks?Roughing it in the Bush is about women's place and power, make no mistake about it, whether you like it or not.

I'm finding that with the eyes of the world on Canada, Alaska, and the Arctic suffering from rapid global climate change, books on this part of the world are becoming increasingly easier to find for those who seek the obscure, out-of-print titles being resurrected by reader inquiry and demand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless
I have read most or many chapters of this book.Since it is a report of a time and place and area of human endeavor and North American pioneering history that would remain in greater darkness were it not for Moodie (her husband, and her sister Traill too), this book is priceless and amazing. There were not many fully literate English gals in the undeveloped woods of Canada in 1832!What a treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Roughing It In The Bush - Amazing
I absolutely loved this book because Mrs. Moodie has an incredible ability to paint pictures and emotions in your mind and heart. The day to day history is vivid and exciting.I found it interesting to read first hand about the many places in the Kawarthas and Cobourg regions as they existed at the dawn of their settlement.Observing the interaction between the Americans and early Canadian immigrants was also valuable.A very eloquent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Journey with an early Canadian immigrant
For a great first hand account of the early Canadian immigrant experience read this book. The author is authentic and self depreciating in a subtle way.The places and people are real, and more important the thoughts of the author are the thoughts of the time but reveal a mind not different from our own.Bye the way, I find history books boring but loved this piece of our history.

1-0 out of 5 stars yuck - unlikeable, racist author
I came away from this with a very bad taste in my mouth.I don't find Mrs. Moodie very likeable at all.Her racism toward the Irish is really offensive, even judging her by the standards of her own day.The rest of the book is so-so -- some of the frontier experiences are interesting, but I found her personality so unlikeable that I cheered when her house caught fire. ...
