Product Description

All things work together . . . Come to me, all who are weary . . . Trust in the Lord with all your heart . . . The hairs of your head have all been counted . . . Mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.

Despite decades of preaching experience, it was just a few years ago that best-selling author Robert J. Morgan (Then Sings My Soul) began to note the magnitude and frequent use of the word "all" in the Bible. Upon closer inspection, it appears to amplify many of God’s greatest truths, commands, and promises nearly six thousand times, proving itself to be what Morgan calls "the largest little word in the world."

My All in All is the fruit of his unique study, a 365-day devotional that will assure readers of God’s purposes, power, and grace time and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique Devotional
What a unique devotional!Author Robert Morgan let's us look over his shoulder as he studies out the word "All" in the Bible. He shares his insights in short devotionals, one throughout the entire year. While he does quote Scripture in the devotion, he also sends the reader back to the Bible to get those "words of Life" for themselves. There are many new devotionals that came out for 2009, but for me, I chose All in All to use in my evening devotions.I highly recommend it.

Robert W. Morgan is one of the first persons to seriously investigate and research the mystery known as Sasquatch, or Bigfoot. Robert has spent many years conducting active Bigfoot field research, and he has amassed a considerable amount of knowledge and wisdom.

This CD set is for serious people wanting a face-to-face encounter with a legend. Robert gives the reader a step-by-step guide to follow.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Base
I found this book to be pretty base. There is a segment where it is mentioned (someone's observation)that Bigfoot rolled around in sewage to disguise his odor.I just find a lot of concepts put out by the author as difficult to accept, if not very disgusting. This book was written with the sentiment (in my opinion) of someone sharing a beer with some drunk friends--just a loose attitude. If you like journalism supported by facts, professional writing, something to challenge your thinking, you probably will not enjoy this book. On the other hand, if you just want to read about Bigfoot theories from someone (in my opinion) who is on the fringe of society you might enjoy this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
The previous reviews of this book had a goodly number of stars, which I took to mean that it was high on the recommend list.

I feel it's necessary to add my opinion, to help other potential buyers understand what they may wish to order before
they complete the transaction. Yes, this is a field guide as opposed to a anecdotal report, though there are a few short stories the author uses to illustrate points. Perhaps Mr. Morgan really is an expert in this field of study, but I think the truly
useful suggestions he has to help advance someone's potential encounter with a 'forest giant person' could have been reduced to a
three page pamphlet instead of a 136 page book.

For me, as a student of the phenomenon of Bigfoot/Sasquatch, I look for solid, well-researched data about the subject that fits the standard set by books like 'The Walla Walla Bigfoot' by Vance Orchard or the excellent 'The Locals' by Thom Powell.

Serious students will find these two books to be more useful than Mr. Morgan's fanciful and overwrought field guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bigfoot

I am very pleased with my purchase of "Then Sings My Soul." The condition of my book was better than what I was expecting.Would order from this vendor again, for sure.

1-0 out of 5 stars Biased, and factually inaccurate
As a musician, music historian, theologian, and hymnologist, I found this book to be extremely biased as well as factually inaccurate. Not only does the author fail to give any kind of bibliography, he attempts to interweave his evangelical prejudice into the history of these hymns.Anyone seriously seeking to discover hymnology would do well to stay away from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful

5-0 out of 5 stars Very uplifting
This is a great book and really fills in the blanks, so to speak. Product Description
Designed to accompany and supplement the author's survey, Twentieth-Century Music: A History of Musical Style in Modern Europe and America, this selection of 29 works or groups of works by 24 composers covers a time span from 1903 to 1983.Since the music is characterized principally by its diversity - by the different schools and movements moving forward simultaneously - it poses special problems for those lacking extensive analytical experience. Therefore, Morgan has included, for each selection, an analytical essay in which he discusses the overall character of the music in question, avoiding special terminology and technical jargon wherever possible. All musical genres are represented and only complete works, movements or integral sections are included. To assist the reader, the book includes instructions on how to read a score and a chart of instrumental names and abbreviations. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good...not Great
The 20th Century was a very innovative time period in music. The influence of globalism and technology undeniably effected the musical atmosphere of the world in the 1900s. Yet Morgan seems far more concerned with atonalism and anti-classicism than the influence of jazz, popular music, recording technology, and even cinematography. While he does not fail to mention these influences, I believe that he did not emphasize their importances adequately. However, there is much to discuss in the world of 20th century music, and Morgan provides excellent insight into the topics that he chose to focus on. A good study of the era but not quite a great one.

Now available in trade paperback, bestselling author and pastor Robert Morgan helps readers explore the many character traits of Jesus through a deeper look at his many names.

Some believers know Jesus as a Healer, others as a Teacher. Some picture His simplicity, others His majesty. Each of these images and many others offer a glimpse of who Jesus is, but all of His names, collectively, reflect the many facets of His personality. In devotions accompanied by poems and hymns, this inspiring book helps readers discover what is truly in His name: comfort, peace, healing, and hope. Day by day, readers will develop a deeper understanding of the infinite characteristics and qualities of Jesus. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mmm Just OK
Overall I enjoyed the book.I was a little disappointed with some of the explanations of certain names, I felt the author could've written so much more in the space provided than he did.On the other hand, some of the explanations were pretty good.Fun to read for enjoyment but not as a learning tool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent devotional
A definitive devotional that uplifts. It makes you realize how wonderful the God that you place all of your trust in cares for you. Each name is a characteristic of God--defining his abilities in your life.

3-0 out of 5 stars Functional, but not outstanding
He Shall be Called by Robert J. Morgan is a devotional whose theme is the study of 150 names of Jesus. Each devotion is 1½ pages long and can be read fairly quickly. The meaning of each name of Jesus is evaluated in light of Scripture, and uses an illustration. Each devotion closes with a stanza from a hymn that relates to the specific name of Jesus referenced.

This book is neither an academic nor a theological study. The names of Jesus merely provide a framework for the devotional readings. This is effective in that it provides a sense of intellectual accomplishment, more than is experienced with other devotionals, but there is rarely any distinction made between two names if they are very similar to each other. For example, there are two different devotions based upon Revelation 19:16, which calls Jesus the "King of Kings and Lord of Lords." One devotion is on Jesus as the King of Kings, and another is on Jesus being the Lord of Lords, but the illustration and application are interchangeable. There is no discussion on what makes King of Kings different from Lord of Lords, nor if there is any difference. This would most definitely be done in a more academic study.

The stanzas from the hymns that conclude each devotion were amazing. Oftentimes they spoke to me much stronger than the devotions themselves. This could be good, in that they added to the quality of each devotion as a whole; but, if these stanzas were meant to reaffirm points already made, the reaffirmation is clearly stronger.

This book is functional, but not outstanding. Its strengths would be the power of the hymns it cites and the vivid quality of many of its illustrations. Its weakness would be that it does not provide robust evaluations of the names of Jesus. If a person is looking for a detailed study on the names of Jesus, this is not the book for him. If a person is looking for a devotional work centered loosely on the identity of Christ, I would recommend He Shall Be Called. -- R. Ben Armstrong, Christian Book Previews.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Stories behind each of the hymns we were raised on
This book is fantastic. Finally a book that gives us the stories behind the writer of each old hymn that we were raised on as children.
My particular favorite is "It is well with my soul." All songs are writtenbecause of personal experiences in people's lives and how Godhad a role in helping them through the trials. It has been a big help to me.I've bought several and given them away. I highly reccommend it.

Don't be misled by the subtitle of this book. It should say: 302 of the world's greatest hymn stories. It is volumes 1 & 2 complete and unabridged. This great compendium of the actual hymn scores, coupled with stories, is a must for those who love hymns and especially for choir directors and all church musicians. These stories can be shared in rehearsals and discussion or Bible study groups. And it is hardcover.A great collection. The only downside to this set is that v. 1 and 2 have just been bound together with separate title pages and separate indexes--no overall index. But for what it offers, this is truly a great book. Product Description
Twentieth Century Music is the third volume to appear in this series.Morgan divides his text into three chronological sections. Beginning with such giants as Mahler, Richard Strauss and Debussy, he discusses national movements, as represented by Charles Ives and Ralph Vaughan Williams; philosophical movements as various as the Schoenberg/Berg/Webern alliance or "les six"; and the giants who were "sui generis", such as Bartok and Stravinsky. The "isms" such as serialism, minimalism, indeterminism, the new romanticism and pluralism, are clearly delineated and the electronic boom of the last decades is defined. ... Read more

Customer Reviews (3)

3-0 out of 5 stars Outdated
Well written for what it is, but does it make sense to spend so little time on the last 55 years of the century? If anything, there should be more space as we get closer to the present, as there is more music being composed now than at any time in history.

5-0 out of 5 stars best overview of the century
Morgan's book is the best that I have found for an overview of the entire 20th century in "classical" music. He divides his analysis into 3 logical sections:

Part 1. Beyond Tonality:From 1900 to World War I

Part 2. Reconstruction and New Systems:Between the Wars

Part 3. Innovation and Fragmentation:From WWII to the Present

This allows for some nuance that a simple list of composers often misses. For instance, Schoenberg's "atonal revolution" is covered in Part 1, along with the "new tonalities" of Stravinsky and Bartok.Part 2 covers the origin of the "twelve-tone system," but makes clear that it did not become influential until years later with the "serial revolution" in France, led by Messiaen and Boulez, in Part 3.

As others have noted, Morgan is not as strong on the more recent period, partly because the book was published in 1991 and thus misses such phenomena as Schnittke's surge of popularity, especially in Russia and Europe, after the collapse of the Soviet regime.I recommend two other books along with Morgan:1) Gann's "American Music in the Twentieth-Century," which covers developments in the U.S. in greater detail, thus including for instance one of my favorites, Roger Reynolds, and 2) Griffiths' masterful "Modern Music and After," which begins after the Second World War.

5-0 out of 5 stars The History of Modern Music for The Layman
As we end the 20th century, we may not realize that 20th century music covers the same time span as the 19th century Romantic music period. Have we grasped the meaning of modern music. To do this one needs to understand the history as well as the dynamics of 20th century music. Here is a book that fills the bill. Not only does Mr. Morgan discuss the growth and change in 20th century music but he does it in it's historical context of our maturing as a world. For many the atonality of 20th century music is hard to grasp, especially when concert artists and orchestras continue to emphasize in their repatoire 19th century music. But as the world changes so will music. A book to awaken your interest in 20th century music and the composers who were the leaders of this period. ... Read more

Product Description

From the bestselling author of Gap Creek, comes a breathtaking collection of stories about the lives and history of the settlers of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Struggling to survive in an ancient mountain landscape that alternately thwarts their efforts and infuses them with joy and vitality, the strong-limbed and strong-willed people of the Blue Ridge Mountains undergo the transition from ploughshares to bulldozers -- from the Indian skirmishes of the post-Revoluationary War era to the trailer parks of the present day. In these eleven first-person narratives, Morgan visits the themes that matter to all people in all places: birth and death, love and loss, joy and sorrow, the necessity for remembrance and the inevitability of forgetting.

This is a moving tribute to that which is universal and eternal -- the majestic immutability of the earth and the heroic human struggle to live, love, and create new life. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Chronology of America
Robert Morgan's collection of eleven short stories spans over 200 years of American history. Each story is told in first-person point of view.Five of the stories are told by women, and the narrators range in age from about twelve to late eighties.Several of these stories are so well-written, they are sure to be included in short story anthologies.Morgan varies his style of writing throughout the collection, and he gives glimpses of life in the North Carolina mountains from pre-colonial days to the present.Along the way, he shows that though times may have changed, people remain pretty much the same. Two stories are especially powerful. "Watershed" and "Mack" were two of my favorites."Watershed" gives a unique look at life in the mountains when settlers were still challenging the Indians over the land."Mack" is set in the present and is narrated by an elderly man who suffers from a very weak heart. His story focuses on what he has learned from life and from his dog Mack. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has interest an in history, the South, and people in general. ... Read more

After the story, a suggested prayer guides children to receive Christ’s promise of salvation and everlasting life, while Lola invites them to sign and date a commemorative certificate, cementing this special moment in their memories.

Best-selling author Robert J. Morgan has told this story to children for years and personally witnessed hundreds of them in turn express faith in Jesus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kid friendly message of salvation
I have never written a review before but felt I needed to after reading this book to my children. This book is a great tool to explain to children how to become a Christian. My children loved the story and we talked indepth about the meaning of John 3:16. Thanks to the author for writing this book. It made a very serious topic easy for my children to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars God's plan of salvation clearly defined for your minds
Through creative storytelling, inviting illustrations and the occasional running rhyme, this book parallels a young girl's desire for a trip to a theme park with our opportunity to go to Heaven.

It begins with a young girl, Lola Mazola, begging her father for money to go to Happyland. The brochure tells of a wonderful place with rides, shows, lakes hotels, a water park and a zoo! But her daddy doesn't have the money. He tries to sell a painting so that she can go, but no one buys a painting that day.

The next day Lola goes to Sunday School where her teacher, who is also her Uncle Tom Tweed, teaches the class about John 3:16. He examines the verse little by little from the beginning, answering all the children's questions.

* WHO IS GOD? "He made trees and plants. Bees and ants. And fleas and seas and knees and peas. And bumblebees and chimpanzees." Though we can't see God, He is all around us and He loves us very much.
* WHAT IS THE WORLD? The planet earth and all that it contains, including you and me.
* WHO IS GOD'S SON? is: Jesus. Lola's uncle tells the class about Jesus' birth; how He grew up to be a man, a teacher and a preacher. "He was perfect. Perfectly perfect." Then he tells of Jesus' death and resurrection.
* WHY DID JESUS DIE AND RETURN TO LIFE? "For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish ..."
* WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO PERISH? The teacher talks about Heaven and how it is God's happy land; how it is so much better than here. "It's perfect. Perfectly perfect." "To perish means never getting to go to God's happy land."
* WHY WOULD WE BE PREVENTED FROM GOING TO HEAVEN? "Because we have all broken God's rules in the Bible ... But since Jesus died on the cross, God can forgive us ... Then we can go to His perfect place."
* HOW DO WE GET THIS FREE GIFT? We believe in Him.
* WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BELIEVE? Put your trust in Jesus to cover our sins and believe God wants us to spend eternity with Him. It also means living your life with Him as Lord, seeking to obey His commands.

Finally, Lola's uncle gives the class a sample prayer they can pray along with their own copy of John 3:16 to take home with them.

When Lola gets home, she is still upset about not being able to go to Happyland. That is, until Uncle Tom surprises her with a gift: $100! It's enough for her to go! As she packs her bags, she tells her father it's the nicest thing anyone has ever done for her. He reminds her: "Not quite ..." Her father opens his Bible to John 3:16 then tells Lola again of the gift God gave her: eternal life if she will believe in Jesus.

As bonus features, this book offers a letter to parents at the beginning and notes in the back for the whole family. A certificate is included for kids to sign and date when they choose to believe in Jesus. Finally, a "Now what?" section which offers four practical tips for helping believers grow their faith and relationship with Jesus.

What I Like:This is the first children's book I've seen that so clearly details God's plan of salvation in such a logical manner! I love the step-by-step (inductive) study of this verse. It's beautifully accurate and age-appropriate. The running rhymes and sporadic repetition are fun to read and hear! The illustrations by Glin Dibley are friendly and colorful. Finally, the front and back matter are excellent.

What I Dislike: This is not a dislike, but ... Scripture quotations are taken from the Holman Christian Standard Bible - a version likely unfamiliar to most. It was distracting and cumbersome at times because I've memorized John 3:16 in different, more common versions.

Overall Rating: Excellent

4-0 out of 5 stars Real Issues in Decsision Making
As both a former manager and an academic, I consider this a solid book about the realities of decision making in organizations. Its a short book but by no means simple. The reality of managerial decision making is that its a complex undertaking not given to simple rules or formulae. If you really want to think about what management entails I highly advise this book.If you just want some simple answers then find some best seller to keep you happy.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book for new managers
This book provided basic, down-to-earth advice in a readable format. As a veteran manager and decision-maker, I didn't find anything new here. But I have found the book particularly useful for coaching and mentoring.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Worst Book Written about Decision Making Ever!
Evidently the author couldn't make a decision on his own thoughts ...80% of the sentences of the text are cited from other sources. Not a single original idea from the author! This text was required reading for aManagement Critical Thinking and Decision Making class. You can be sure Iwill contact the dean to remove this book off the list. ...
