Product Description
Written in an extremely lucid, informative style with vivid graphics and illustrations, The Essential Guide to Your 401(k) objectively guides you through all the complexities and opportunities of 401(k) plans.

Nearly 35 million people have 401(k), 403(b) or other defined contribution plans, which have replaced more traditional pensions and Social Security as a primary source of retirement income. Yet few who have these plans, whose value can total hundreds of thousands, or even millions of dollars, truly understand the intricacies of these plans, the many benefits to exploit, and the many pitfalls to avoid.

Despite the reams of information available to people with these plans, many don't know which investments to make, how to determine if their investments are performing well, or the best choices to make when they change jobs, borrow against the plan, or retire and begin withdrawing from their account. Making the wrong choice can mean huge tax consequences, or even penalties. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I have an idea...!
Called 'American Dreams' it might have been justly titled 'American Commercial Trivia'. Each year from 1889 thru 1989 has a business idea explained in a few hundred words and stock archive photos.Of course, in some years not too much happens, the spread for 1956 covers the interstate highway program and 1935 gives a page to National Labor Relations Act and the AFL CIO.

A book of interesting ideas and products that have changed our lives explained in a superficial way.I would have expected something with more substance from The Wall Street Journal...'the daily diary of the American Dream! ... Read more

Kenneth Morris (1879-1937) was a Welsh author and theosophist. He lived in California from 1908 to 1930 as a member of staff of the Theosophical Society headquarters at Point Loma. The last seven years of his life were spent back in his native Wales, during which time he founded seven Welsh theosophical lodges. In the verdict of Ursula K. Le Guin, Morris appears as one of the three master prose stylists of fantasy in the 20th century, together with E. R. Eddison and J. R. R. Tolkien. His works include: The Fates of the Princes of Dyfed (1914), The Theosophical Path: Golden Threads in the Tapestry of History (1915-1916), The Three Bases of Poetry: A Study in English Verse (1917), The Crest-Wave of Evolution (1919-21), The Secret Mountain and Other Tales (1926) and Book of the Three Dragons (1930). ... Product Description
Some of the best-known modern painters in the American Northwest, the artists Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, Kenneth Callahan, and Guy Anderson have been called the leaders of a "Northwest School" since the 1940s. But a detailed investigation of their interactions from 1930 to 1954 shows the perception of these four artists as a cohesive group to be a myth. Northwest Mythologies offers a new analysis of their interactions and accomplishments, and places their art and ideologies in the larger context of American modernism.

Although the four artists exchanged ideas and shared common interests, they were close friends and colleagues for only a few years around the time of World War II. Each experimented with stylistic elements admired in the others’ painting, yet they produced distinctive, widely ranging bodies of work over their long careers. What fundamentally united these artists was their philosophical approach to artmaking, one that rested on humanism and their passionate belief in art as a moral pursuit.

Constructing a chronology from letters, interviews, and new analyses of their works, Northwest Mythologies reexamines the careers and complex friendships of Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, Kenneth Callahan, and Guy Anderson, and explores their different understandings of what it meant to be an artist. This book is the first study of the four painters to finely articulate their differences and achievements, and it presents a new view of their place in American art. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The book is anexcellent introduction to investing in Asia.
The book has chapters on Money, Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds, and Futures & Options. Each chapter is written very clearly and pictures are used frequently to simplify descriptions of complex economic and financialideas.

I would recommend this book to all of our customers who are justgetting started with investing in stocks or who would like to know moreabout more complicated investments such as mutual funds, futures andoptions.

Many books about investing in Asia are quickly made useless bythe gyrations in the volatile Asian markets.Unlike most such investmentbooks, the Asian Wall Street Journal/Asia Business News' Guide toUnderstanding Money & Investing in Asia focuses on explaining the basicfundamentals of investing. It should be classic introductory investmenttext for years to come.

3-0 out of 5 stars Compiler of the next edition should have a Ph.D. in a technology-related field...
Being a librarian for 33 years, it has been interesting and a lot of fun to have been an active participant in the "Information Age." Having "been there, done that" for much of the coverage, I find the content of this title quite dated, but still interesting to browse through and read.

The artwork, layout and design is simply fantastic. High school and middle school level readers will enjoy the humor -- illustrations of a ram's head to discuss random-access-memory; a picture of a cookie with a bite out of it for a discussion of a "byte"; an illustration of a plane crash for computer "crash"; and so forth.

I like the fact that the book is profusely illustrated as the color brings another dimension to content that, frankly, would be quite difficult to absorb as simple text. The book designers have done a good job of jazzing it up enough for users to want to pick it up and read, understand and absorb.

The author, strangely enough, is the CEO of the publishing company that produced the book and has a Ph.D. in English from Columbia University. While he prides himself on having written a number of books for the financial services industry and having developed "the first easy-to-read documents for the brokerage, banking, and telecommunications industries," he (and his company) would be better served by bringing in a co-author with a Ph.D. in the growing field of the History of Technology to help rewrite the text for a second, newer edition. And, I do hope they publish another edition !

3-0 out of 5 stars Good basic guide
This is a picture friendly small handbook that puts a happy face ont taxes. Its a small history book that feels like a TAXES FOR DUMMY book. Its a little too happy really for a subject that is not the most upbeat.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic guide - helps understand the vocabulary of taxes
First, this is NOT a tax manual. This small and colorful book is designed as a general introduction to the process and vocabulary of the various taxes we all pay under varying conditions of income and investment. It is not a current guide to assist you in tax planning.

It gives you a basic introduction to the kinds of taxes we pay at the federal and local levels, the IRS, "paying as you earn", the annual (federal) return (with a nice general overview of the general applicable forms), audits (shiver!), and a little overview of tax planning. But, again, this guide's purpose is to provide a general overview and to provide you with basic concepts and vocabulary.Think of this as a good introduction to the topic rather than a practical preparation guide and you will understand what this book is trying to do.

It has lots of color and every page also uses helpful illustrations of the forms and processes involved in the tax process.Great for young people trying to learn what they are facing as the goverment(s) remove large chunks of their income to keep us in whatever it is we think we have from the government(s).

1-0 out of 5 stars OBSOLETE
Tax laws have changed dramatically since 1995. A lot of the information in this book is irrelevant now. Does not include infomation on newer tax credits.

WSJ must introduce a new and updated edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Taxes in brief for beginners
This book was the right price and the right pace for a young person begining his or her life on their own.The Wall Street guide is comprehensive covering a quick history of taxes and then expounding uponthe present state of US tax codes and the IRS.This book won't help youfill out your taxes nor contain the most up todate codes but may help makethe frustration and confusion associated with filing much lest daunting andmore bearable ... Finally, a dictionary that unravels the insider jargon of investing and trading in wordsand pictureswe can all understand. In place of cryptic definitions that are often more intimidating than the words themselves, the Dictionary of Financial Terms provides truly helpful explanations of over 700 of the most commonly used, and most commonly misunderstood financial terms, using examples, illustrations, and complementary graphics to make the words meaningful as well as memorable.

Filled with helpful cross references that link related terms and concepts, the dictionary also lists the most important terms to know for online trading, investing in stocks and mutual funds, and analyzing investment performance. Special sections also clarify the differences between frequently confused terms: what is the difference between NASD, Nasdaq and OTC, anyway?

With dramatic changes in the financial markets occurring each day, it's getting more and more difficult to read the news, let alone the business sections of daily papers, without a handy guide to financial terms by your side. ... Read more

Product Description
This is the first book to focus on the ethic that Dietrich Bonhoeffer constructed during the 1930s - an ethic he crafted while playing a key role in Christian resistance to Nazism and an ethic still inspiring politically active Christians. The ethic of discipleship, this study argues, represents a reworking of the Christian faith so that it becomes actively opposed to totalitarianism. This book therefore adds a significant dimension to the published record concerning the German theologian and pastor executed in 1945 for conspiring to assassinate Hitler and overthrow the Third Reich.Since an ethic reflects more than a cognitive assent and has emotional and experiential dimensions, the author's approach is sociopsychological. drawing on the large documentary record of Bonhoeffer's family relations. Reductionism, however, is rejected in this book, which gives social psychology parity but not superiority - in understanding Bonhoeffer's religious quest and political dialogue. ... Read more

Product Description

Together with his brother Humberto, Daniel Ortega Saavedra masterminded the only victorious Latin American revolution since Fidel Castro’s in Cuba. Following the triumphant 1979 Nicaraguan revolution, Ortega was named coordinator of the governing junta, and then in 1984 was elected president by a landslide in the country’s first free presidential election. The future was full of promise.

Yet the United States was soon training, equipping, and financing a counterrevolutionary force inside Nicaragua while sabotaging its crippled economy. The result was a decade-long civil war. By 1990, Nicaraguans dutifully voted Ortega out and the preferred candidate of the United States in. And Nicaraguans grew poorer and sicker.

Then, in 2006, Daniel Ortega was reelected president. He was still defiantly left-wing and deeply committed to reclaiming the lost promise of the Revolution. Only time will tell if he succeeds, but he has positioned himself as an ally of Castro and Hugo Chávez, while life for many Nicaraguans is finally improving.

Unfinished Revolution is the first full-length biography of Daniel Ortega in any language. Drawing from a wealth of untapped sources, it tells the story of Nicaragua’s continuing struggle for liberation through the prism of the Revolution’s most emblematic yet enigmatic hero.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection
I'm very glad to have now belatedly acquainted myself with some of Kenneth Morris's fantasy fiction. The stories here are frequently based on traditional mythology and fairy tales, and Morris does quite well adapting them, reworking them, and retelling them in a suitably atmospheric manner. Fans of things like the Mabinogion will want to read these stories, as will those who like Lord Dunsany's work. It is also interesting to see how Morris, a Theosophist, expands upon and adapts Theosophy to his story-telling purposes, as well as uses the myths and stories as vehicles to teach Theosophical wisdom.
