Product Description
The world according to Kevin Murphy, Ireland's favorite househusband. A rapidly aging stay-at-home father, three adorable but rapidly growing daughters, and one rapidly executive wife. These are the ingredients of Kevin Murphy's hilarious weekly column in Ireland's bestselling newspaper, Sunday World. Week in, week out, he brings the understated art of househusbanding and all its zany happenings to vibrant, comic life. Now, for the first time, the very best of these columns have been brought together in "A Dad's Life," the definitive chronicle of how a one-time newspaperman copes with some of life's biggest challenges-fatherhood, parenting, hotpress management, and, yes, supermarket trolleys.

At every turn, his wit sparkles and his one-liners crackle with the intensity that only an authentically exhausted chef, nurse, and taximan can muster. Be it holidays from hell, Christmas migraines, foody fads, or tales from the teenies' twilight zone, Murphy excels at bringing us front line dispatches from the modern battleground of suburban family life. If journalism is literature in a hurry, this is the Harley Davidson version. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Once I picked it up and started to read, I couldnt put it..
THE REPOSITORY was a bit of a different read for me.I believe that it would be called, dark fantasy. Not that I don't like dark fantasy.I do.I just don't get to read it often enough.Adam gives usthe standard evil characters but adds an air of"anything is possible" thatis very charming.Once I'd picked it up and started to read, I couldn'tput it down until I was finished.

First off, the cover.Yes, I do noticethose things.I love good cover art and THE REPOSITORY has excellent coverart.Kevin Murphy, the cover artist, and Neil Seltzer, cover design, haveput together the perfect package that could sell this book on looksalone.

Though THE REPOSITORY is not the sort of book that has to get byon looks alone.THE REPOSITORY is a wonderful read.Thrilling. Enthralling. You will find yourself under a spell as Adam Niswandercleverly weaves you into his story. And what a story it is!

I supposethat you want a bit of a peek.Okay, open the pages and you will find; anancient fellowship, an evil witch, a gifted and kind man, Lucifer himself, and Ambrose Bierce.Just imagine. Can you?Well, if you can, you areAdam Niswander.

You are going to want this one.If you don't, I pickedup a thing or two when I went to New Orleans and I just might have todemonstrate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterful dark storytelling of magic realism
THE REPOSITORY is one of those books that you can't put down until youfind out how it all turns out, and once it's over you wish it wasn't. Thisis a real page-turner, with a background of epic scope, characters that aresimultaneously larger than life and all-too-human, and incredible pacing.Niswander tells a great story and he tells it well. His prose enters intopoetic beauty during the Wormwood-like chapter introductions, attributed toAmbrose Bierce in the form of a report to his dark master. And on top ofeverything else, the item itself is very handsomely made. This is a bookthat fans of fantasy and horror will be doing themselves a disservice tomiss

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant fictional of accouning of Satan's War
The Fellowship founded by Merlin consists of magicians dedicated to keeping Lucifer from destroying humanity.Over the past millennium, many dedicated individuals battled the evil minions of Lucifer.Though alwaysvictorious, the Fellowship members know their biggest fight is always thenext war because a loss means the end of mankind.

The powerful witchUrthane la Voisen, a former resident of Hell, has been slowly eroding theorganization for years. One of her mightiest successes was killing thesibling of Josiah, the librarian who maintains all the known books onmagic. However, Urthane failed to slay the unborn child of Josiah'ssister-in-law.When he was born, Randall was abandoned on the courthousesteps. He grows up in an orphanage. The lad has magical powers, but lacksformal training in their use. When a catastrophe strikes, the Fellowshipturn to Randall as their only hope to defeat Urthane.

THE REPOSITORYis a fascinating but chilling account of the eternal battle between Goodand Evil.Adam Niswader, author of the Shaman Cycle, has created a finework filled with interesting heroes and delightful villains. The storyline is so taut that readers will believe Mr. Niswader is chronicling realevents including those of the future. This novel is simply great storytelling.

Kevin J.Murphy has written a book that is incredible. It is not only inspirational in a way of letting people know how precious life is,but it magnifies peoples lives like myself. That is because it touches our lives on a very personal level.A very wonderful book. This man made me relive my own childhood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful!!
I was given this book as a gift from a friend. I brought it with me on a weekend trip and read it in one sitting, with a dinner break in between. It has given me new thoughts on life, how we percieve things in this world. If everyone was made to read Mr. Murphy's book, the world would be a better place. The honesty and approachability with which it is written is far superior to any memoir I have read in a long time. Especially recommended for anyone who has lost a parent, anyone who has had cancer in their family, and teenagers struggling with their relationships with their parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing
Once started I could not put this book down.I was totally mesmerized by the feelings of this son and his total love and feelings for his Father.I nevr knew my Father, but I lived thru the joys and the pain that the author experienced in his time with his Father.Well written -Deep from the heart ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very highly recommended
Police Chief Joe Weiss of the Lackenby police department hires Dr. Matthew Shea as an investigative consultant for a dollar a day plus expenses. Shea teaches a popular class at the local university on "Socio-Emotional Origins of Crime". Weiss once served on the New York City Police Department. Shea brings extensive investigative work and a degree in behavior sciences. Together they form an unbeatable team.

Shea tells his students that all crimes have a pattern, if only you closely enough. But Weiss can't find the pattern in a recent rash of murders; three people have died in two weeks, and Weiss hopes a fresh pair of eyes will help. Weiss assigns the nitty-gritty work to his department, thus freeing himself and Shea to examine the bigger picture.

The victims of the crimes have nothing in common. Different ethnic groups, male and female, economics and method of death separate them. Soon Shea realizes that the killer is staging the murders, making a victim look like she fought back, for example, when she was actually too drugged to do so. Then several of Shea's students unexpectedly complicate the investigation when they try to use techniques taught in the classroom on the streets.

An extraordinarily well constructed mystery, DEGREES OF MURDER will hold the reader's attention riveted as plenty of misdirection and suspects fill the tale with suspense. The setting of a university for the class and many of the cast of characters lends the tale a touch of authenticity, without pushing the envelope of possibility. Moreover, Murphy's background in military experience in security and police work lends the narrative voice a complexity and depth that marks it as a classic. DEGREES OF MURDER is going on my keeper shelf. Very highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A well thought out, old fashioned mystery
With a background in writing, military, and police work, Kevin P. Murphy brings his own special expertise to the world of mystery writing. He has written more than 800 pieces, published in newspapers, the web, and magazines. He won third place in the 1998 Ridgewriters Branch of the California Writers Club Screenplay competition with "Something Bright and Alien."

Set in Lackenby, Illinois, Police Chief Joe Weiss calls on his friend, Matt Shea, a behavioral sciences professor at State Line University when two murders occur. Shea is uniquely qualified to assist in the investigation, since his background consists of considerable experience in investigation. As the two search for identifiable patterns in the murders, more murders occur, and the only pattern that emerges is the lack of a pattern:

"`What it says to me, Matt," Weiss continued, "is that we're dealing with a person who has some reason for making things look different than they are, and that is our pattern so far. What's the matter, Matt?' Shea shook his head as he muttered, `There was something there for a second -- almost visible -- something you just said triggered a memory of something -- but I can't get it out where I can see it.'"

Murphy creates almost a modern day American Poirot, as Weiss and Shea puzzle their way through serial homicides. There is plenty of action to satisfy the reader; much of the trivial police work is handled by officers, leaving Weiss and Shea to formulate their theories. Murphy creates a clever twist and denouement, by placing the killer right smack under their noses. The final chapters contain the chase, which is suspenseful, intriguing, and just plain great entertainment. The university setting, with people's children at risk, makes a chilling setting.

Degrees Of Murder is a well thought out old fashioned mystery designed to keep the reader at the edge of their seat. We never know when the killer will strike next, and as we get to know the characters better, we as readers develop an emotional stake in the outcome. Matt Shea and Joe Weiss are friends, honorable men, and we want them to succeed. The killer is a hateful villain: secretive; soulless; and intent on creating pain and suffering for kicks.

There is a growing need for appropriate management of aquaticplants in rivers and canals, lakes and reservoirs, and drainagechannels and urban waterways. This management must be based on a soundknowledge of the ecology of freshwater plants, their distribution andthe different forms of control available including chemical, physical, biological and biomanipulation. This series of papers from over 20different countries was generated from the highly successful EuropeanWeed Research Society symposia on aquatic plant management, this beingthe ninth. The contributions provide a valuable insight into thecomplexities involved in managing aquatic systems, discussstate-of-the-art control techniques such as biomanipulation using fishand waterfowl and the use of straw, and deal with patterns of regrowthand recovery post-management. Careful consideration is given to theuse of chemicals, a practice which has come under scrutiny in recentyears. Underpinning the development of such control techniques is a growingbody of knowledge relating to the biology and ecology of water plants, including growth responses under different trophic conditions, theimpact of pollution, and aspects of photosynthesis. The authorship ofthe papers represents the collective wisdom of leading scientists andexperts from fisheries agencies, river authorities, natureconservation agencies, the agrochemical industry and both governmentaland non-governmental organisations. ... Product Description
This volume presents the first wide-ranging critical review of validity generalization (VG)--a method that has dominated the field since the publication of Schmidt and Hunter's (1977) paper "Development of a General Solution to the Problem of Validity Generalization." This paper and the work that followed had a profound impact on the science and practice of applied psychology. The research suggests that fundamental relationships among tests and criteria, and the constructs they represent are simpler and more regular than they appear.

Looking at the history of the VG model and its impact on personnel psychology, top scholars and leading researchers of the field review the accomplishments of the model, as well as the continuing controversies. Several chapters significantly extend the maximum likelihood estimation with existing models for meta analysis and VG. Reviewing 25 years of progress in the field, this volume shows how the model can be extended and applied to new problems and domains. This book will be important to researchers and graduate students in the areas of industrial organizational psychology and statistics.

Product Description
This volume chronicles the development of printmaking in America through the first half of the twentieth century. During this period of dramatic social and cultural change, printmaking served artists as a cost-effective means of communicating their observations and ideas. Woodcuts, etchings, and lithographs--many illustrated here--by artists such as Thomas Hart Benton, Childe Hassam, Edward Hopper, John Sloan, and Grant Wood addressed a variety of themes, including urbanization, small-town life, the Great Depression, the California landscape, and the two World Wars. The skyscraper, for instance, became a prime subject, admired for its roots in American architecture as well as its associations with national power. Prints frequently portrayed the city's inhabitants, often in crowded spaces where the distinctions between public and private life might become uncomfortably blurred. Depictions of the Depression of the 1930s suggest pessimism about the prospects for social justice in a capitalistic economy. Other prints demonstrate a heroic conception of industry and an idealized view of life in the nation's agrarian heartland. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WEST FORTY-SECOND STREET, NIGHT, 1922
The carving tools and dynamic artwork of American printmakers exist in their own special world, far from the media glare and public acceptance. Perhaps one of the ultimate "niche" arts, intaglio etching and aquatint prints are generally dismissed as "too modernistic", "too austere", "too intellectual", or "too kitsch" by the self-appointed Those Who Know Better. In 2005, two important print collections were promised as gifts to the Huntington Library and Art Gallery in San Marino, CA. "Pressed in Time: American Prints 1905-50" was the resulting exhibition (Oct 2007 - Jan 2008), intended to celebrate the donations and bring the larger existing collection to the public's attention. This book, featuring 54 plates and 5 illustrations, served as the exhibition catalog, and is an outstanding introduction to not only the Huntington collection but also to American printmaking in general.

If I have one complaint about this book (other than the pages being numbered by the binding rather than the edges), it would be that I wish more of the 82 artists represented in the show could have been included. While the show's highlights have indeed been captured for posterity, I'm sure curators Jessica Todd Smith and Kevin M.Murphy also wanted to keep costs down for what was sure not to be a runaway best-seller. According to Smith's introduction, this catalog was not meant to be a comprehensive survey, but to showcase the most visually striking images while representing a variety of print techniques. Much emphasis is given to the political and social engagement of prints depicting city life and city people, many produced by Modernists who were influenced by the Ashcan School. There is also a focus on the Regionalists who depicted rural life, rural people, and landscapes in their prints. The tone of the images ranges from pessimistic to idealistic, and from the wildly fantastic to the merely realistic. This book concludes with a complete exhibition checklist and a helpful glossary for those who wish to learn more about this fascinating, multi-faceted artform.

I would like to draw attention to two of the most exceptional artists featured in this catalog. If ever a printmaker could be described as "famous", Los Angeles artist Paul Landacre would be the one: his studio is now a Los Angeles historic-cultural monument. His black ink, anti-Romantic depictions of mountains, flora, and fauna were featured in many magazines and books from the 1920s to the 1950s. His three wood engravings (Coachella Valley, Death of a Forest, and The Press) in this book are among the most outstanding. The absolute very best, however, would be the John Taylor Arms masterpiece this review is entitled after. The ethereal, dreamlike late-night New York street scene is also part of this book's cover and must be seen to be believed. The misty luminosity and delicate, intricate detail of this work should change the mind of anyone who views the art of printmaking as dull and boring. Interestingly, most of Arms' work was based on European Gothic cathedrals and castles, so this piece is a true ground-breaker for both the artist and for contemporary printmaking.

I've returned to this book many times since making my purchase, and I never cease to be amazed at what's inside. We're told from the beginning that the bulk of the Huntington's print collection is from the second half of the twentieth century, so I will be looking forward to future volumes and exhibitions. Until then, "Pressed in Time: American Prints 1905-50" rates very high in the WOW factor and is highly recommended to those captivated by the subject, whether or not one viewed this exhibition. ... Product Description
The gender and racial composition of the American workforce is rapidly changing. As more women in particular enter the workforce and as they enter jobs that have traditionally been dominated by men, issues related to sex and gender in work settings have become increasingly important and complex. Research addressing sex and gender in the workplace is conducted in several distinct disciplines, ranging from psychology and sociology to management and economics. Further, books on gender at work often reflect either a more traditional management perspective or a more recent feminist perspective; rarely however, are these two orientations on women and work acknowledged within the same text. Thus, the principle goal of the book is to communicate a variety of social psychological literatures and research on gender issues that affect work behaviors to upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in applied psychology and business.
