4-0 out of 5 stars "Destroyer" author tries something new
The Digger series was a short-lived attempt by Warren Murphy (of Destroyer fame) to start a new book franchise. After just three novels, he switched publishers and re-started the series under the name Trace. Trace was essentially identical in every way, except for the character names.

Digger is about an investigator who works for a life insurance company. He drinks vodka pretty much 24/7 and sleeps with every attractive woman he can get his hands on (which is quite a few). He's not terribly bright and his girl friend (a part time hooker) solves the case in pretty much every story.

What makes the series is the humor and there is plenty of it. It takes a while for this book to get going but by the second half, the laughs start coming and it is a very entertaining read. This is not high art by any stretch of the imagination but if you're a fan of Warren Murphy or smart aleck humor then you should give it a try. ... Read more

Beer for breakfast, that's how the brother-in-law of the President of the United States starts his day. Beer is his food, his fuel, and his future, if not his finale. His sudsy philosophy immersed him in a continuing controversy, embarrassing the White House, and making him a media personality. It is also giving him some very lucrative consulting jobs for foreign governments. Like the Libyans. They want his help in obtaining plutonium . . . For peaceful purposes, of course . . . a Holy War against Israel being the furthest thing from their minds. Suddenly good old Bobby Jack is missing. And the list of suspects seems endless. "Yes," Smith said, "he is taking over the city. He is giving an open invitation to organized crime to move its operations into Bay City. He's opening the piers so that contraband can move in and out easily, so drugs can flow freely. Mob interests are coming from all over the country . . . setting up cutting rooms and jewelry factories for stolen diamonds . . . printing facilities for counterfeit stock certificates and securities . . . major counting rooms for what may become the nation's biggest illegal gambling operations. It'll be the crime capital of the U.S. within a few months!" "Well, there's capitalism at work again. Proving that our system works best," Remo said. " . . . And we want you and Chiun to keep him alive. Of course, he won't know who you are or who you work for," Smith said. "Or why. Which includes us, as usual. But that's OK, if we can't kill him with kindness, then we'll CURE him," Remo said. "Let's not get into that," Smith gasped. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Remo hits a new low.
It's a Destroyer novel so I wasn't expecting great literature, but "Holy Mother" has got to be one of low points in the adventures of Remo Williams. While most books in the series will give a little peek into the background of the "bad guys" to show where their motivations come from. "Holy Mother" goes into great, and at some points unneeded, detail into the histories of the most minor of charters andbad guys. This kind of detail just comes off as obvious padding. Other obvious padding that took place is the repetitive descriptions of the "Holy Mother's" servants, I can remember at least three times where their skills were mentioned. It just gets repetitive after a while.

There is also no suspense with this book at all. As the entire plot is given away in the back cover blurb. That much would have made the book a little more enjoyable, but when you know who the enemy is and what they are after before you even open the book it just takes some of the fun out of it.

There are a couple of things about "Holy Mother" that I liked. They are starting to age the charters a bit Smith now has a assistant (I realize that this is not new to "holy Mother" but this is the first Destroyer book I have read in a while). Chiun according to Remo is ill and maybe dieing, we have started to see weakness in what up till now has been the infallible master. There was also a subplot running through the book that will probably lead to some great conflict, but what that may be I do not know. ( I am sure that if I were a bit more up to date with The Destroyer that I would have gotten more out of the developments of this subplot but it was all lost on me).

Overall an OK book at best. If you want to get into The Destroyer series "Holy Mother" is not the book for you. It would be best to start with one in the ones numbered in the high teens back when Murphy & Sapir where in command and not the hack ghost that Gold Eagle has on the job now.

1-0 out of 5 stars Onholy Mess
The Destroyer started in 1971 as an action series that had more going for it than any other series. I have been a devoted reader since the beginning but if I didn't know that next year Tor Books will be publishing The Destroyer then this horrid book would be the last one I would buy. This author started out with some promise but that promise died quickly. There is no Remo and Chiun in this book. There is a little Remo, less Chiun, and even less Smitty. The book is all about the bad guys and they are pathetic. If you are a completist then buy this book and the next one and then wait patiently for the return of the REAL Destroyer next April. Jim Mullaney and one of the series creators, Warren Murphy, have reclaimed control of the books from Gold Eagle and they promise to bring back the characters we have lived with for decades.

1-0 out of 5 stars The End is Near...for Gold Eagle
Just when I had hopes that the Gold Eagle era of The Destroyer series would end well, the penultimate book, Holy Mother, was released. Skip this one. Trust me.

This rush job is in serious need of both editing and revision.

I'll probably pick up Dragon Bones because I've read almost every Destroyer book, but I don't have high hopes for it.

I trust the new publisher will do a much better job with the future books. I also understand there may be another Destroyer movie in the works. Things are looking up for the franchise as Gold Eagle flutters away. ... Read more

Something's rotten in the garbage business -- and CURE is ready to take out the trash . . .

IF IT LOOKS LIKE TROUBLE AND SMELLS LIKE TROUBLE . . .

Mayana -- a South American country known only for a mass cult suicide -- is poised to become the salvation of a trash-choked globe. An ingenious new device called the Vaporizer can turn garbage into thin air and trash into cash for the beleaguered nation. And what could be a more beauteous sight for a global environmental summit than barges piled high with the world's smelly refuse parading through Mayana's harbor.

Actually, Dr. Harold Smith smells trouble, and with the U.S. President headed for the summit, he dispatches Remo and Chiun to the scene, posing as garbage scientists. And not a moment too soon, since torpedoes are sinking garbage scows left and right, leaving a stinking mess and a huge crisis. It's clear that nobody -- including a Japanese industrialist, anex-Soviet premier turned peacenik environmental tree hugger, and the president of Mayana himself -- can be trusted, specially when the Destroyer uncovers a diabolical plot of global domination that promises to totally trash the free world . . . ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Waste Not, Want Not (Destroyer #130)
Jim Mullaney already had his reputation as an enjoyable author and one of the all-time BEST of the Destroyer scribes;but this effort seals that rep in spades.

The plot is another of those great satires that the series is famous for, replete with broad characterisations of certain attitudes common for Our Times. Remo and Chiun are of course,Remo and Chiun, just the way we fans like `em. The garbage pile Our Heroes find themselves mired in this outing ( quite literally) is the type that Destroyer fans delight in,with scams to reveal, designs of avarice to wreck, and truths to be told.

I don`t want to ruin anyone`s enjoyment with a specific reveal; (that`s the Hell of reviewing!)so I shall restrain myself here, but suffice to say that after reading The Destroyer for over 25 years,I know what I`m talking about when I speak of it. This does not disappoint.

Wesley Pruiss is a misunderstood and misled publishing entrepreneur. The dirtier his little magazine gets, the more money he makes. There seems to be no limit to the dirt of the money. His full-color monthly, called Gross, soon spawns a chain of raunchy nightclubs ("Grossouts") and now a spectacular motion picture was being planned. Disgusting. UnAmerican, even. Enter Remo and Chiun. Not to destroy, but the protect! Disgusting, but very American. Who'd want to kill a dirty publisher? Why worry about the rottenest, most depraved publication in history? Because of the oil industry and their concern over the growth of solar energy, obviously. Oil makes the world go'round. It'd be perverse to think otherwise. . . . as you'll quickly learn in this thirty-sixth volume in the violent chronicle of the Destroyer, the invincible shatterer of worlds from Sinanju. ...
