Product Description

Pemba knows she's not crazy. But who is that looking out at her through her mirror's eye? And why is the apparition calling her "friend"? Her real friends are back home in Brooklyn, not in the old colonial house in Colchester, Connecticut, where none of this would have happened if Daddy were still alive. But now all Pemba has is Mom and that strange old man, Abraham. Maybe he's the crazy one.

Thank goodness for Pemba's Playlist and the journal she keeps. There are so many answers deep inside that music. So much is revealed in Pemba's poetry -- the bops she writes and those coming through her iPod. Phyllis, an 18th-century slave girl, has answers too. But Phyllis's reality billows out from her visits to Pemba, visits that transform both girls in ways neither expected.

In this supernatural tale, the voices of these two characters entwine to put a new spin on a paranormal story. As a mystery unfolds, many truths are revealed-- about honesty, freedom, redemption, and friendship.

Excerpt:

Miles of highway and nothin

but trees.Mom's movin me to Nowhere,

CT when I used to live in the center of the universe:

Brooklyn, NY.This must be some kind of evil curse. . . .

I'm journalin like my hand's on fire, ear buds blarin:

~Pemba

The truth everywhere evident:

my days are numbered in our happy home.

The only home I know.

Both in here and out there, I am invisible. . .

~Phyllis

5-0 out of 5 stars Lyrical and Moving
What a wonderful ghost story! Pemba's lyrics and visions, her connection with the ghost in the old New England house she and her mother have come to live in, are just exquisite. I love the connection she makes with the past; I love how slippery reality can be as Pemba slips into visions and memories that aren't hers- and I love that she knows she's not crazy- that she perseveres in finding out the house's secret, no matter what. I just love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Granddaughters really enjoyed this
It's so hard for me to pick books that my 13 year old twin granddaughters will enjoy, but this was a winner.Ghost stories seem to hit the right buttons and this one was a quick and fun read for them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too
Pemba is a young girl who only has her mother now. Her father passed away, and so they moved away from her friends in Brooklyn to an old colonial house in Colchester, Connecticut.

There is a very strange old man named Abraham here, and Pemba thinks he is the crazy one - but she isn't so sure about herself anymore.

Pemba and a slave girl from the 18th-century, Phyllis, become intertwined, and Phyllis visits Pemba in a supernatural way. These visits change both girls in many different ways.

I recommend PEMBA'S SONG for anyone who loves a great supernatural story. It is a new twist on the paranormal. It isnt the conventional, cookie-cutter ghost story, but one of mystery, friendship, freedom, and truth.

This is a great book to read and almost gives you a new understanding of what people have went through and the limits of true friendship.

Read it! It's a nice change in paranormal and supernatural stories!

Product Description
A faithful little dog must survive on his own in the wild in this evocative tale of loss and reunion from acclaimed poet Marilyn Nelson and the inimitable Timothy Basil Ering.

Abba Jacob is a monk who lives on a far, far away island with his loyal rat terrier, Snook. Every day, from the wee hours of dawn till the sun sets over the sea, Snook keeps Abba Jacob company as he prays or works, tending the gardens or fixing the plumbing of the little hermitage he calls home. But when the two are separated by a ferocious storm, Snook must learn to fend for himself in the wild, all alone in a world of fierceness and wonder. Will he ever again hear the loving voice that he waits for? Simply and lyrically told by award-winning poet Marilyn Nelson and beautifully illustrated by Timothy Basil Ering with wit, warmth, and affection for the natural world, this captivating tale of friendship lost and found conveys the power of faith against all odds. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Miss Crandall's School for Young Ladies & Little Misses of Color
When I learned that Ms Alexander was the inagural poet I was curious about her so I bought the book. I was pleased with the book and its interesting history about the education of blacks in America.

I was introduced to the book by Dr. Irene Hall, co-founder of Discovery Charter School in Newark, NJ, my Alternate Route Instructor, who had her students read the book prior to Pres. Obama's inaguration. She told us about the book and it's historical importance; therefore when I purchased it I knew what I was getting.

I must say I was not disappointed. The book was well written and put together to make such a sobering series of event interesting.

Prudence Crandall, a young schoolteacher with a Quaker upbringing, started a boarding school for female students in Canterbury, Connecticut in 1831.Although the townspeople had helped to establish the school, their support soon changed into outrage when Ms. Crandall accepted a young African American woman from Boston. Outrage led to withdrawal of the white students as Ms. Crandall admitted a second student of color, and by early 1833 the school had only black girls in attendance.

Efforts by the townspeople to close the school intensified as they arrested and briefly jailed Ms. Crandall, harassed the students, stopped selling provisions to the school, and ultimately ransacked the building and set it on fire.Although the town succeeded in closing the school, Ms. Crandall continued to speak out about social justice across the country, and ultimately the town of Canterbury made reparations for their wrongful actions.

Elizabeth Alexander (poet for the 2009 inauguration of President Obama) and Marilyn Nelson (poet laureate of the state of Connecticut, 2002-06), use a series of carefully-crafted and beautiful sonnets to relate the story of Prudence Crandall and her students. The uncertainties of leaving home for a boarding school, the joys of gaining new knowledge, the frustration in encountering resistance from the town, and the fears of experiencing harassment are all captured in the powerful verses.Floyd Cooper's moving illustrations work extremely well in helping the reader to interpret the poems. This unique book of poetry provides teachers and parents with a new opportunity for teaching important lessons about discrimination, education, and U.S. history.

5-0 out of 5 stars translation of ethereal poems by contemporary Scandinavian woman poet
Light and sometimes dimness is like a participant and sometimes like a record or register for what happens, which can be any part of life--desire, remembrance, an interchange with someone or just a look at someone, a private moment. From the prose-poem "The First Spring's Shadow"--"A sun that pling, pling leaps out between the dark trees and hits the chrome of the bicycles...What isn't clear is the shadow..."; from "Right There in the Smoke"--"spoons, teacups, knives/drop/out of my hands/and fall into lead white/out of every/fixed meaning..."; and the opening of "The Move"--"Can everything burn, can everything give light..." Not every poem explicitly mentions light, subtly hints at its import, or almost imperceptibly uses it as a metaphor. But in every poem, most evidently in those where light figures, Pedersen sets a tone and finds a careful balance intimating that there are dimensions something like a thirteen month out of ordinary time giving sensible life a special fullness and poignancy. ... Product Description

Since its birth in the 1960s, the study of popular culture has come a long way in defining its object, its purpose, and its place in academe. Emerging along the margins of a scholarly establishment that initially dismissed anything popular as unworthy of serious study-trivial, formulaic, easily digestible, escapist-early practitioners of the discipline stubbornly set about creating the theoretical and methodological framework upon which a deeper understanding could be founded. Through seminal essays that document the maturation of the field as it gradually made headway toward legitimacy, Popular Culture Theory and Methodology provides students of popular culture with both the historical context and the critical apparatus required for further growth.
For all its progress, the study of popular culture remains a site of healthy questioning. What exactly is popular culture? How should it be studied? What forces come together in producing, disseminating, and consuming it? Is it always conformist, or has it the power to subvert, refashion, resist, and destabilize the status quo? How does it differ from folk culture, mass culture, commercial culture? Is the line between "high" and "low" merely arbitrary? Do the popular arts have a distinctive aesthetics? This collection offers a wide range of responses to these and similar questions. Edited by Harold E. Hinds, Jr., Marilyn F. Motz, and Angela M. S. Nelson, Popular Culture Theory and Methodology charts some of the key turning points in the "culture wars" and leads us through the central debates in this fast developing discipline. Authors of the more than two dozen studies, several of which are newly published here include John Cawelti, Russel B. Nye, Ray B. Browne, Fred E. H. Schroeder, John Fiske, Lawrence Mintz, David Feldman, Roger Rollin, Harold Schechter, S. Elizabeth Bird, and Harold E. Hinds, Jr. A valuable bibliography completes the volume.
