Product Description

Full woman, fleshly apple, hot moon,
thick smell of seaweed, crushed mud and light,
what obscure brilliance opens between your columns?
What ancient night does a man touch with his senses?

Loving is a journey with water and with stars,
with smothered air and abrupt storms of flour:
loving is a clash of lightning-bolts
and two bodies defeated by a single drop of honey.

The poetry of Pablo Neruda is beloved worldwide for its passion, humor, and exceptional accessibility. The nearly fifty poems selected for this collection and translated by Stephen Mitchell—widely praised for his original and definitive translations of spiritual writings and poetry—focus on Neruda's mature period, when the poet was in his fifties. A bilingual volume, with Neruda's original Spanish text facing Mitchell's English translation, it will bring Neruda's sensuous work to vibrant life for a whole new generation of readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I love Pablo Neruda. The translations were accurate and the book is well laid out. the spanish on one side and the english on the other. Not a love poem book though. More about all the beauty in the tangible world. i.e ode to salt

5-0 out of 5 stars This is specifically for the audio version!
I just rediscovered this gem in my storage trunk and if you love reading Neruda, you will love listening to his poems as well. Its a whole different experience. Close your eyes (but first hit 'play!), and prepare to be transported.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mitchell Does It Best
I am a true lover of the work of Pablo Neruda and have perused many
translated works of the famous Chilean poet.
Stephen Mitchell's translations are by far the most eloquent I have found.I feel they best convey the many moods of Pablo Neruda. The writer is able to capture the most intense feelings in the poet's writing better than any I have read.Thank you Stephen Mitchell.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can Neruda rate more than five
This is a lovely translation, but then I think of them all as good. There is no comparison for me to any other poet. Keep this or any of his books near your bed to understand the earth, sea, mountains, love, stones, earth, grace, redemption, cats, neighbors, friends, etc. The depth and breadth is expansive and this is a "sweet" book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure spirit, pure soul.
Having been interested in Neruda since seeing the movie "Il Postino," I've glanced at several collections for over 3 years, butnever took a book home for my own.Looking for a collection that contained"Ode to Laziness" (one of my favorite subjects), I found andpurchased Full Woman, Fleshly Apple, Hot Moon.I sat down in a big chairon a Sunday afternoon and opened it to the first page and the love affairstarted there. Usually, I read a book of poems randomly, just flipping hereand there, looking for whatever surprizes me.For some unknown reason, Istarted this book from the beginning with Mitchell's introduction, thenread the first poem.I couldn't help myself as I read one poem and thenanother till I had carefully read almost every one.Pure spirit, puresoul. Each poem is a love poem to the most simple, everyday, ordinarythings of this world--his suit, his socks, his watch--engaging us to see asheer web of grace that runs through out our lives.Put another way,Neruda sees and shows us a world that shimmers and loves us as fully as welove it.

Many thanks to S. Mitchell for creating this collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Tal vez tú no sabías, araucana...

5-0 out of 5 stars Un Poeta con mayúscula
Neruda sigue siendo uno de los grandes. Y este libro, uno de los clásicos indiscutibles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving/Conmovedor!
The "Veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada" is the best-selling book of poetry ever in the Spanish language and established Neruda as one of the great talents of the 20th century. Each of the 21 poems is touching, full of illusion and warmth, with an amazing use of imagery. The last two express loss and heartbreak in a breathtaking way.Poem #20 is perhaps the most famous:"Tonight I can write the saddest verse."

The "100 Sonetos," written many years later, contain some gems, though I much prefer the first book.Don't make the mistake of thinking that these were all written for the same woman -- they weren't!Neruda seduced many of his muses with his poetry.

5-0 out of 5 stars la palabra de amor

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read.
This is one of the first books of poetry that Neruda published back before the middle of the 20th century. It is an excellent and very recognized book - of poetry.I think the most important thing of Neruda is that he celebrated the goodness of poetry and good art.In that it is a way of enjoying life, and not gettting caught in the vanity or less popular ways of living or acting towards others (selfishness, greed etc).

This book is that.It is full of beauty. His poetry is one of the most recognized unversally, selling many copies (over amillion in spanish, and that was by 1956.

The most gratifying thing of this book and Neruda in general is the happiness, sadness - different emotions - that it depicts. And most importantly a work of quality. ... Read more

Product Description

Celebrating the works of a great Chilean poet, this collection offers a vibrant translation of Neruda’s sensual and erotic poetry. Famous for his politically engaged lyrics, the Nobel Laureate also wrote bold and sexual sonnets, and this compilation captures the spirit and verbal dexterity of the lesser-known genre. These sonnets from one of the most influential and beloved 20th-century poets accompany questions for discussion and lists of recommended readings and related websites.

Just to add to the former reviewer. These translations are also sometimes better that the Tapscott translation that is so much more common. Example from XII: "que oscura claridad se abre entre tus columnas" was translated (Tapscott) as

What secret clarity open through your columns

contrast with (Escobedo)

What dark clarity opens between your columns

- for my money only the second of these makes sense. I didn't get this line until I read this book's version.

No complaints about the poetry. Pablo Neruda works are wonderful. Mistakes in translation - example in Sonnet LXXXIX-The line should read:

1-0 out of 5 stars Belitt doesn't translate, he makes his own poems, and all Pablo's magic is gone
I bought this after reading some of Copper Canyon's books of Neruda's posthumous poetry. I'm fluent in Spanish, but can't find the books without translations here in the States. Simply put, while I loved Pablo's original words in this collection, it was anguishing to read these "translations," as they are more adaptations then anything else, and all of the original beauty and crystal poetic craft is lost. I'm going with the rest of Copper Canyon's series, I suggest you do the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliance Abounds
Pablo Neruda did not live an ordinary life.Neither was his death ordinary (technically he died of internal hemmorhaging, however he was murdered after supporting the first democratically elected communistleader... chock full of scandal). The first thing his widow did afterhearing of his death was running to her study and taking from his desk allthe poems that lay atop it (since he was known to write at least five poemsa day, they were plents). These are the poems that appear in this book...you will want to write a letter to Neruda's widow praising her for savingsome of the most beautiful work that Neruda did.His lyric quality andgraphic diction make this a collection of poetry you want to dedicateyourself to memorizing. The poetry buries itself in your heart and yousuddenly see new beauty springing around you.A must-buy. ... Product Description

Few writers are as integrally bound to a place as Pablo Neruda was to the landscape of Isla Negra on Chile’s coast. From his arrival there in the late 1930s to his death in 1973, Neruda captured Isla Negra in images fundamental to an understanding of his work. It was, according to Martin Espada, at Isla Negra where Neruda "in the company of his muse, walked alongside the source of his most lyrical inspiration, the sea...and discovered a new way of seeing, as the ocean became a living metaphor for the infinite riches of the world." The poems, selected from three volumes of Neruda’s work, are presented with photographs of Neruda and his house in an attractive gift format.

Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda , who died in 1973, remains one of the most influential voices in world literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another poetic triumph by Neruda
"Fully Empowered" is an outstanding volume of poetry by Pablo Neruda of Chile. The book has been translated into English by Alastair Reid, and is presented in a bilingual format, with the Spanish originals and English versions on facing pages.

Overall, I found Neruda's voice in this book to echo that of United States poet Walt Whitman (who could be seen as one of Neruda's 19th century poetic "ancestors"). Neruda's attentive poetic eye looks at both humanity and nature with reverence and compassion. His voice is often very tender. Like Whitman did in his work, Neruda often writes in the first person in this book.

Some of the most memorable selections in this book include "To Don Asterio Alarcon, Clocksmith of Valparaiso," in which Neruda finds dignity and transcendence in the work of the title figure; "Thistle," in which he celebrates "the blue thistle of Chile"; and "The People," a passionate tribute to all the working people of the world.

In "Summary," Neruda writes, ". . . my life was always / singing its way between joy and obligation." "Fully Empowered" marvelously embodies both Neruda's sense of moral duty and the joy that proceeds from his life's work.

This collection was published in 1962 (nine years before he was justlyawarded the Nobel Prize.)Here Neruda states his mission in a poem likeThe Poets Obligation: He will give voice to those who have no voice.Hewill speak for the downtrodden. The imagery of the sea is scintillating. The poem Fully Empowered also backs this stand. But amid the politicalstuff there are some beautiful lyric poems as well.To Sorrow is agorgeous poem.Short pieces like It is Born reflect a deeply sensitivepoet. This is classic Neruda.Viva Pablo Neruda! ... Fiftieth Anniversary Edition

Neruda was a kind of King Midas. Everything he touched turned to poetry, says Gabriel Garca Mrquez, who also considers the Chilean Nobel laureate "the greatest poet of the twentieth century, in any language." [The Fragrance of Guava, 1983]. The Canto General, thought by many of Neruda's most prominent critics to be the poet's masterpiece, is the stunning epic of an entire continent and its people. The Canto speaks of the destiny of Latin American peoples and the life of the poet himself. Without question, this is one of the most important and powerful long poems written in the modern period. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Books Of the 20th Centruy
How is there only one review for this? This is one of the greatest books of all-time. Neruda is one of my favorite poets and all of the reasons why are present in this text. I just learned that some people have a different impression of Neruda because they have only come across his more popular Odes and Twenty Love Songs and a Song of Despair. I like it all, but those are nowhere near the level of Canto General.

Canto General is an epic. I especially love the early passages about life on Earth before the conquistadors came. It's a complete historical account about the creation, the defilement and the restoration of the Americas. Neruda brings it all out full force in this book. I have read many passage out loud and have found myself actually winded from the unending power.

This translation is excellent. I can't compare it to others, but it's clean and seems to hit the mark really well. When reading it, I never question that it's anything but Neruda's voice. There is also a nice introduction. It also has a flap that can be used is a bookmark. It's very sturdy for a paperback.

Get this book. Each read opens new windows. Neruda is at the height of his powers here. There are wonderful passages, captivating sub-narratives, political revolts, and the poetry is unparalleled. It's actually hard to describe in words. When the mind is clear, it's some of the best poetry that there is.

Support local bookstores if you can.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of Latin American Literature
If you must read only one book from the Modern Latin American Literature (and this certainly would be a great mistake, if not a crime), then it should be this one. Canto General is a single poem, and yet it is acollection of poems. It is a historical epic, a social analysis, apolitical pamphlet, and a love sonnet. It is a song of Love and a song ofRevolt, a personal song as well as a universal one; a song which whisperstenderly in your ear, and a song that screams against injustice with a loudforceful voice. It is Pablo Neruda's song and it is Chile's song, but it istruly America's song, North and South.

Written in Neruda's lyrical andmellifluous style, Canto General speaks with passion, lucidity, and evenpremonition of the heavy burden of social injustice and the brutality oftyrannical rule. But it also speaks with overflowing sensuality of love(for women, for the people, for his country). It would be unconscionablenot to absorb and understand this book in its social and historicalcontext, yet it would be a great mistake to view it uniquely as a politicalwork of expression.

Read it to understand the Americas. Read it to revelin the beauty of its language. Read it to feel proud and to feel ashamed,to laugh and to cry. Read it in English (good), in Spanish (much better),or even in French (why not?)

I first read Canto General in French at theage of 15. I may since have forgotten some of the words in this book, butits impact and its spirit will probably remain with me for the rest of mylife.... ... Read more

"Teitelboim's biography may well serve as the most important reference on Neruda's life and spirit because he maintains a historical distance between the reader and his subject. Product Description

Pablo Neruda (1904–73) is one of Latin America’s best known poets, adored by readers for the passionate love lyrics written during his early years in his native Chile, and respected by critics for the dark, hypnotic verses he composed during his later, solitary years as a diplomat based in the Far East. As Dominic Moran shows in his concise biography of Neruda, rarely have the life and works of a writer been so intimately and dramatically bound up as they are in Neruda.

In Pablo Neruda, Moran takes a detailed and often critical look at this relationship, focusing as much on what the poetry sometimes strategically hides about Neruda the poet, the lover, and the political proselytizer, as what it reveals. Moran describes a life that was marked by an increasingly militant communism, the seeds of which can be traced to Neruda’s experiences in Spain during the early months of the Spanish Civil War. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Neruda became a literary torchbearer for the International Left, and he spent his final years campaigning to bring socialism to his beloved Chile. He  lived just long enough to see his hero Salvador Allende unseated by Augusto Pinochet’s bloody coup.

Pablo Neruda paints a fascinating picture of one of the most prodigiously gifted literary figures of the twentieth century. It will appeal to fans of Neruda’s verse who wish to learn more about the life behind it, as well as to readers interested in Latin American literature, politics, and history.
