This collection gathers in one place the essays that have done most to shape the modern critical discussion of the Confessio Amantis, and illustrates, by the choice of the landmarks of Gower criticism, how the study of the poem has evolved. It also provides representative examples of major approaches to the poem and selected studies of its most important aspects The essays provide a valuable indication of precisely what kinds of challenges the Confessio Amantishas posed for modern readers; they will provide the groundwork for all future study of the ConfessioEssays by: G.C. 3-0 out of 5 stars Great fun from one of the masters of horror....
It seems an amazing fact that the majority of actors who have tied their stars to horror have had personalities that couldn't be farther apart than the characters they played. Certainly, Peter Cushing may be the classic example of this. He often played unethical murderous characters in horror films and appeared as the hero in countless others, but he was one of the most soft-spoken gentleman one could ever meet. This book includes both of Cushing's books - written in the late 80s. His Autobiography and the follow up "Past Forgetting." The first is excellent, recounting his life and career from its early days to the present and includes many thoughtful anecdotes and his great love for his wife Helen shines through. The second part - Past Forgetting - is for fans only. It's not badly written or boring but contains little of substance and is not easily recalled. A disappointment after the first book, but then again - when you already told your life story, what are you supposed to do? Tell it again. Still, this is highly recommended for all fans of Cushing and Hammer films.

5-0 out of 5 stars Peter Cushing....A Love Story
Peter Cushing was fiercely devoted to his wife, Helen and this autobiography certainly drives that point home. The death of his wife in the early 1970's left Cushing in a deep state of mourning that he never really recovered from, in his own words, he spent the remaining years of his life after Helen's death, awaiting his own death.Cushing regales us with stories of his early years, his years in Hollywood, his eventual return to England and his association with Hammer and Amicus, but throughout the entire book, we never lose sight of the fact that Cushing was deeply in love with his wife. One seldom hears/reads of such devotion to one's spouse, but always the gentleman, Cushing gives us all a glimpse into what his world was really like and although it would have been nice to hear more tales of his Hammer/Amicus days, the fact that he opened his heart and bared his soul unashamedly is enough to make this book a must for any Cushing fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Helen, Too Little Hammer
Peter Cushing's two-volume autobiography, now conveniently combined into one volume, is indispensible reading to any Hammer fan like myself, who grew up looking forward to each new Cushing shocker. It is the essentialcompanion volume to Christopher Lee's autobiography "Tall, Dark &Gruesome". Mr. Cushing's considerable personal charm and famousgentlemanliness shines from these pages. For my own taste, I could haveused less on his great romance with Helen and more day-to-day off screen atHammer & Amicus, but other readers, especially women, will reactdifferently.Cushing was nothing if not madly in love with his wife, andher early death left a void nothing ever filled, though Cushing lived onpast her for over 20 years. The photos have been well & generouslyselected, and overall, the book is a pleasureable read about one of thenicest men ever to make a career scaring the pants off us. Those who knowPeter only as Grand Moff Tarkin in "Star Wars" will find a wealthof career that led to that pinnicle, and even his die-hard HammerFrankenstein & Van Helsing fans may not know he worked with Laurel& Hardy, Cary Grant and James Whale! It makes you feel like you'resitting in a lovely seaside cottage, sipping tea and nibbling cakes whilePeter regales you with tales from a life you may end up wishing you hadled. ... Read more

Product Description
This book offers a reassessment of the political philosophy of the British Idealists, a group of once influential and now neglected nineteenth-century Hegelian philosophers, whose work has been much misunderstood. Peter Nicholson focuses on F. H. Bradley's idea of morality and moral philosophy; T. H. Green's theory of the Common Good, of the social nature of rights, of freedom, and of state interference; and Bernard Bosanquet's notorious theory of the General Will. By examining the arguments offered by the Idealists and by their critics the author is able to penetrate the deep layers of hostile comment laid down by several generations of later writers and to show that these ideas, once properly understood, are not only defensible but interesting and important. ... Product Description
"Children and Adolescents in Trauma" presents a variety of creative approaches to working with young people in residential children's homes, secure or psychiatric units, and special schools. The contributors describe a wide range of approaches, including art therapy and literature, and how creative methods are applied in cases of abuse, trauma, violence, self-harm and identity development. They discuss the impact of abuse and mistreatment upon the mental health of 'looked after' children, drawing links between psychoanalytic theory and practice and the study of literature and the arts. This indispensable book provides useful insights and a fresh perspective for anyone working with traumatized children and adolescents, including social workers, psychotherapists, arts therapists, psychiatrists, counselors, psychologists and students in these fields. "Community, Culture and Change" encompasses a wide range of ideas and theoretical models related to communities and cultures as a whole, embracing key Therapeutic Community concepts such as collective responsibility, citizenship and empowerment, as well as multidisciplinary ways of working and the social origins of distress. The ways in which our social and therapeutic worlds are changing are illustrated by the innovative and creative work described in these books. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Eerie fun
This collection of monthlies offers a set of brief story lines, set in a world near that of Gaiman's Sandman - and with Gaiman on board as consultant, carries itself very well. The stories range from ironicly drol to dark and macabre. Plots and characters move easily from the real world (whatever that means) to dreamworld and back, and even the players' bodies adapt to the need at hand. This series doesn't stretch the range of the graphic novel the way Sandman did, but it does give the interested reader some very readable stories and characters.

1-0 out of 5 stars A vast disappointment
Comparing this book with Gaiman's Sandman is simply misleading. It has none of the light or spirit that characterizes his work.

5-0 out of 5 stars I didn't expect it to be this good . . .
but it is.It's really, really good. No, not as good as Neil Gaiman, but you couldn't have expected that. It's excellent, though. It's also a huge improvement on the first "Dreaming" anthology, Beyond The Shores of Night.Caitlin Kiernan (who wrote two story arcs in this collectionmade up of 3 issues each) is a worthy successor to the Sandmanuniverse--which is not an easy thing to be--and Peter Hogan (who wrote twoshort stories) is close.

I shall now discuss each story. The first is"Day's Work, Night's Rest" by someone whose name I don'tremember.I didn't really like this one.It started out trying to beserious (as far as I can tell), but ended up with a sort of black comedythat didn't work. And the art was really ugly.Next!

"Ice"by Peter Hogan.Ah, much better. This is the one where the story ofCluracan and his nemesis is resolved. We also get to see Nuala working asa barmaid in New York; she gets a visit from Lucien.I very much enjoyedHogan's characterization of the Cluracan, and the art issuperior.

Next is a 3-part story arc by Caitlin R. Kiernan, called"Souvenirs".It's about the Corinthian, a character I havealways found fascinating. And this story is fantastic.I honestly thinkit ranks up with some parts of Sandman; perhaps "Collectors",only more disturbing.(Yes, more disturbing than "Collectors". This story is not for the faint of heart.)Caitlin Kiernan has a lovelyand unique style. She invents words ("cricketwhisper") and makesextensive use of the word "and" to join together phrases andthoughts you wouldn't normally join together, creating startling,unconventional-sounding prose which somehow captures the moodperfectly.

Then there's another Kiernan story arc: An Unkindness ofOne.I didn't like this one as much, but it was still pretty cool. It'sabout Matthew becoming a man again temporarily, as Lucien becomes a ravenagain temporarily.I didn't get some of what was going on, but I think I'dhave enjoyed it a lot more if I kept up with "Swamp Thing". Kiernan's prose still shines.Something to note: The f-word is probablyused ten times as much in this one book than it was during the entire runof Sandman. :)

Lastly, another Peter Hogan story: My Year As A Man. This concerns Dream's raven Aristeas of Marmora (remember, "the onewho came back after he was a man again").As you may have figured outfrom the title, Aristeas spends a year as a man, then goes back to being araven. It's a moderately good story, but Peter Hogan really won me over byputting Thessaly in it--quite a bit younger, and now calling herselfHypata, but still Thessaly.I was thrilled to see her again.

Thiscollection far surpassed my expectations--particularly"Souvenirs".If you were devastated when you had no more Sandmanto read, definitely check this out!

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb comic!
Since Caitlin Kiernan took over The Dreaming it's been almost as good as The Sandman, as this collection will demonstrate. She's definitely one of the best writers at Vertigo today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Neil Gaiman it's not...
Well, I suppose that if every comic writer were going to be criticized for not being Neil Gaiman I'd have a very long night ahead of me indeed. But still, the fact that these are almost all characters that he created makethe comparisons more obvious. While Ms. Kiernan does a workable job withthe storylines and characters left hanging at the end of "TheWake," she just doesn't have the flair that Gaiman did. The biggestannoyance for me was that where Gaiman would hint at a million literary, mythological and pop culture references to be discovered like treasures onthe third or fourth reading in his comics, with Kiernan the ones thataren't immediately obvious (which are most of them) are nearly alwaysexplained within the story. But for anyone who may have found Gaiman'swriting too dense or obscure, they may prefer her method. I personallydon't. Still, it was nice to have something left of the Dreaming, even ifit's more like the Dreaming Lite. ... Read more

Product Description

In Love and Ethics, Peter Nicholson offers a comprehensive and accessible reading of Gower's Confessio, as well as a guide to the issues that it poses, linking all of the diverse elements of Gower's complex poem into a single broad view of its purpose and structure. Beginning with an investigation of the literary antecedents of the poem, the author then distinguishes the Confessio from its predecessors in order to discover what is most unique about it. In viewing the Confessio both as a poem and as a work of moral instruction, Love and Ethics illustrates the work's concern with the laws that govern human love, and its understanding of the elusiveness of moral certainty in a fallen world.

Intended for both specialists and non-specialists, Love and Ethics addresses many of the specific concerns of current Gower criticism, provides complete translations of all foreign quotation, and guides the novice reader through Gower's Middle English.

4-0 out of 5 stars Art and Eyebrows
Like many artists, Jack Nicholson has done some hideous things.Like some, he has insisted that they be kept quiet.

After reading this book it will be hard to enjoy him as an actor, but not impossible. One thing which does come through is his absolute devotion to his craft.

And then there's his eyebrows.

He has a natural demonic appearach because he has arched eyebrows. They make him look Satanic and maybe worse...

Enjoy the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Jack is a shining star in a world full of mediority
Not much more to be said. Very intelligent, charismatic, immaculate performer. Thanks Jack. Thanks for your inspiration.

3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't read it, but made it pretty
I designed the interior of this book, and did the 16 page inserts. I think Jack is great, and felt honored working on this project. I haven't read the book, though. I have too much respect for him as an actor and don't want toknow what he's like offscreen.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes and incorrect info in this book
In this book the author states that he interviewed me, included quotes as well.I never met nor talked with Mr. Thompson, even though he writes that he interviewed me in my "Palm Beach home". I've never lived inPalm Beach. He claims to have talked with my father. That meeting nevertook place.Alas, if this part of the book was fiction, where's thecredibility to prove that the rest is true?Too many "confidentialsources".Using that as a crutch you can say anything about anyone. I know the many truths in Jack Nicholsons real story and from what I cantell, Peter Thompson has fallen short on uncovering and perhaps evenknowing what the truth is.By the way, biologically speaking, I am Mr.Nicholson's half sister. ... The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
The eighteenth-century fascination with Greek and Roman antiquity followed the systematic excavation of the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy; and after 1750 a neoclassical style dominated all artistic fields. The titles here trace developments in mostly English-language works on painting, sculpture, architecture, music, theater, and other disciplines. Instructional works on musical instruments, catalogs of art objects, comic operas, and more are also included.

Excerpt: Peter Nicholson (20 July 1765, Prestonkirk, United Kingdom 18 June 1844) was a Scottish architect, mathematician and engineer. Largely self-taught, he was apprenticed to a cabinet maker but soon abandoned his trade in favour of teaching and writing. He practised as an architect but is best remembered for his theoretical work on the skew arch (he never actually constructed one himself), his invention of a draughtsman's instrument and his prolific writing on numerous practical subjects. Born in 1765 in the parish of Prestonkirk, East Lothian, Peter Nicholson was the son of a stonemason. Largely self-taught and excelling in the field of mathematics, he received only a rudimentary formal education, studying under a Mr Richardson, brother of architect George Richardson, at the local parish school from the age of nine until he left, aged 12, to assist his father in the family business. During this time he amused himself by making drawings and models of the numerous mills in the neighbourhood. However, finding stonemasonry not to his liking, he expressed the desire to be a cabinet-maker and so served a four-year apprenticeship at Linton, the principal village in the parish, then worked as a journeyman in Edinburgh before leaving for London in 1789 at the age of 24.
