Excerpt: Major Michael John O'Leary VC (29 September, 1890 2 August, 1961) was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. O'Leary achieved his award for single-handedly charging and destroying two German barricades defended by machine gun positions near the French village of Cuinchy, in a localised operation on the Western Front during the First World War. At the time of his action, O'Leary was a nine year veteran of the British armed forces and by the time he retired from the British Army in 1921, he had reached the rank of lieutenant. He served in the army again during the Second World War, although his later service was blighted by periods of ill-health. At his final retirement from the military in 1945, O'Leary was an Army major in command of a prisoner of war camp. Between the wars, O'Leary spent many years employed as a police officer in Canada and is sometimes considered to be a Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross. Following the Second World War he worked as a building contractor in London, where he died in 1961. O'Leary was born in 1890, one of four children of Daniel and Margaret O'Leary, who owned a farm at Inchigeela, near Macroom in County Cork, Ireland. Daniel O'Leary was a fervent Irish nationalist and keen sportsman who participated in competitive weightlifting and football. Aged 16 and unwilling to continue to work on his parent's land, Michael O'Leary joined the Royal Navy, serving at the shore establishment HMS Vivid...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1221761 ... The present volume has three objects in view: first, to present the life of Saint Patrick without writing a history of the national church which he founded or introducing irrelevant matter; secondly, to place his life and character before the reader as they have been handed down to us in the most ancient extant documents, without overcoating orwithholding anything in the originals; and, thirdly, to deliver to the public at as low a price as possible the original documents grouped together.

At first I had intended to present the Seven Lives of St. Patrick as published by Colgan; but, to my knowledge, there is no copy of the Acta Triadis Thaumaturgae" in this country, and the four lives which I have omitted that is, by Benignus, Patrick Junior, Eiselan the Wise, and Probus are of little consequence. The metrical life by St. Fiech is undoubtedly the most ancient and the most removed from saintly imaginings of miracles. The other two, that by Saint MacEvin and that by Jocelin, appear to have been elaborate compendiums of stories written in antecedent ages, and extant in their time, concerning Saint Patrick. Of the life by Saint Fiech I have made a rude translation corresponding with the original; of the Tripartite I have given Professor Hennessy's version; and of the extraordinary biography by Jocelin I reproduce, for the first time in this country, the rendering from Colgan by Mr. Swift, as published by the Hibernia Press Company, at Dublin, in 1809. Colgan's Latin version of the Life of Saint Patrick by Jocelin is given by the Bollandists, and may be seen in many libraries in this country; but the original Lives, as published at Louvain, are at the Irish College in Rome and at Trinity College, Dublin. A copy may be found elsewhere, but, if so, it is exceedingly valuable, forasmuch as it is exceedingly rare. The Life of Saint Patrick by Saint Fiech will convey an estimate of his character about the time of his death; the Tripartite life by Saint MacEvin will probably impart the notions of the eighth century; and the life by Jocelin will communicate the exaggerations of mediaeval times in the twelfth century. The public will thus have fairly placed before them the thoughts of ages about Saint Patrick through seven centuries after his death. I supply the reader with the Confession and Epistle attributed to Saint Patrick, though I incline to the opinion that they are the issue of an age subsequent to that of Ireland's Saint. The Chronotaxis or Chronological Table at the end of the book I have made out from the work by the Bollandists, which seems to have been preparedwith scholarly and judicious diligence.

Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Chocolate Touch
A very fun book to read, My grandson was thrilled to
have this book

4-0 out of 5 stars Child chocaholic recovers due to a marvelously magical intervention
Except for being "a pig about candy," John Midas is a pretty good kid. Unfortunately, his weakness for the sweet stuff, especially chocolate, is his downfall. Even after the family doctor explains that too much candy leaves little room for more healthful foods, John continues to scarf the stuff up. So when he finds a coin usable in a never-before-noticed candy store, he quickly picks up a box o' chocolates. After eating its one delicious piece, everything he consumes tastes like chocolate. With increasingly serious symptoms, John inadvertently endangers the life of a loved one and must take the right road to right his wrongs. The Chocolate Touch is a short, entertaining, predictable, 1950s era story about a boy whose obsession with candy leads to serious consequences. Also good: the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books by Betty Macdonald.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun and amusing retelling of King Midas
I got this book as part of a clearance bundle at Half Price Books. This is a short kid's book (beginning chapter book) that tackles the evils of candy and the results of selfish behavior. It was a fun read and I liked it.It is suitable for kids of all ages and adults will find it amusing too.

John loves candy, especially chocolate. He loves it to the point where his parents are getting concerned and are trying to get him to give up his candy habits. Then one day John finds a strange coin and stumbles upon a strange candy shop. The coin buys him a box of chocolates. When he opens that box it is not what he expected. Now everything tastes like chocolate and his affliction (at first a blessing) seems to be getting out of control.

This was a cute story with good illustrations. It is pretty short for a novel, as an adult it took me maybe 15 minutes to read it.The idea of everything tasting like chocolate and turning into chocolate is amusing and good for a few laughs.Overall a great retelling of the King Midas story that kids should be able to relate to well. The writing was straight forward and easy to read, very appropriate for the age group it was written for.

The book also teaches a good lesson about moderating the amount of candy you eat, not being greedy, and not being selfish. This was a fun book that I will be keeping around to read to my son when he gets older (he is only three now).

4-0 out of 5 stars A 4th Grade Student Review
I give the Chocolate Touch 4 stars. There is a boy named John and he LOVES chocolate, but he eat's too much chocolate and he get's the chocolate touch. I would recommend it to anyone who love's fantasy. In the end I wanted to keep reading. I wish the author would have stretched the story out a little more. P.S. don't eat the book,it will turn in to chocolate.

Do you like chocolate? If you do read this book. There is a boy whose name is John. It's really funny when John gets the chocolate touch. First John likes the chocolate touch and then he does not like it John found a coin and he thinks it looks funny. At the end of the book something sad happens to John's mom. It's also Susan's birthday and John did something funny at the party. If you love chocolate read this book and see why you need to eat other foods. This is an awesome book to read. If you were John you would want the chocolate touch gone too. Read this book and find out why? The author also teached us not to be so greedy. ~Orange Outlaw

3-0 out of 5 stars A Ten Year Olds Take on the Chocolate Touch
The Chocolate Touch is a book about a boy named John. John was a greedy boy who liked chocolate.Just like me, but I don't like it as much as he did.He was chocolate crazy; thank goodness I am not.John's mom and dad were named Mr. and Mrs. Midas. He also had a sister named Mary.John would get sick when he ate a lot of chocolate .So, he had to take medicine called tonic .One day when John was walking home from school he found a silver coin .It had a fat boy on one side and John's initials on the other side .It was a coin to a chocolate shop.He ran to it and got himself a box of chocolate.when he opened the box of chocolate he saw that there was only one piece of chocolate in it.When he got home he went to bed .Before he went to bed he ate the chocolate. The next morning he was brushing his teeth when he noticed that the toothpaste tasted like chocolate. He ate the toothpaste .Then, he was eating his breakfast and it tasted like chocolate. He then knew that everything he ate turned into chocolate.

Does religious experience come from God, or is it just the random firing of neurons in the brain? The Spiritual Brain proves that genuine, life-changing spiritual events can be documented. The authors make a convincing case for what many in science are loathe to consider---that it is God who creates our spiritual experiences, not the brain.

1-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the worst argued book I've ever read
I hoped to enjoy this book!If you don't already agree with them or have any knowledge or experience in any of the things talked about whatsoever, you're not going to get this book, because the logic jumps are just constant."Chimpanzees only spend 25% of their time socializing and that's why they're not good behavioral model for humans!"...So how much time do humans spend socializing?Oddly enough, this is never mentioned!"The fact that the mind can affect the body is proof that materialism is inadequate to explain it."...Why?No seriously, I do not get this.I might if they ever offered any evidence, but it's just assumed as unassailable fact."A woman seeing her surgeon cut into her head while she's unconscious is evidence that she experienced a true out of body near death experience."...Because of course a surgeon cutting your head is so unpredictable when that's what you're paying him for."The idea of a God module in the brain existing is totally inadequate to explaining the vast variety of religious experiences people experience."...Okay first off, I see absolutely nothing incompatible with a part of the brain designated to work with God and religion.Second off, why? This is a particularly frustrating instance because I can see the dim glimmer of a point under there, but it's buried under giant leaps of logic, so you never quite get it.

And of course, besides the logic jumps, the authors throw in random quotes from everyone on the planet pretty much every other page, in order to make sure you never get into a rhythm of reading them.I suppose it's reassuring in a sense that their writing style is as jumpy as their logic, but it makes it very hard to read at times.

In the end, I don't know if I could really call it a book on neuroscience so much as a poorly argued diatribe about materialism/atheism.The authors spend so much time on it that any actual neuroscience just gets buried under "And this is what the materialists say and they are bad and evil and wrong because we all believe in free will right?"(While I'm going "...wait where did you get them talking about free will from that and how exactly are you defining free will in this context anyway?", but that goes back to the logic gaps.)Don't buy this book for the neuroscience - or any science whatsoever, because as much as the authors accuse others of leaping to conclusions, they've got anti-logic springs strapped to their feet the entire book.If you want to read possibly the most illogical arguments I've ever seen against materialism, however, feel free.

3-0 out of 5 stars A neuroscientist's case for consciousness
This book delves into the research done regarding mystical experiences; the subjects were a group of Carmelite nuns. While I don't agree with the conclusions the book reaches, it makes for thought-provoking reading. The authors attempt to weave science and religion together but contrasting the materialist viewpoint ("the cosmos is all that ever was or ever will be" according to the late Carl Sagan) with neuroscientific findings that suggest that we are more than "computers made of meat".

3-0 out of 5 stars It's good but a little preachy
A lot of this is just opinion. I was hoping it would be more scientific since it's written by a doctor...

5-0 out of 5 stars a book to have
I was not sure if I would buy this book or not,but after buying it I see that it was a great gift to myself.
There are a lot of interesting facts and scientific datas that are easily explained and the author have done a lot of homework before writing it.
The narrator voice is clear and I felt confortable listening to him.
It is a great book to add to your library

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The subtitle "A neuroscientist's case for the existence of a soul" is extremely misleading. They never actually make a case. They never advance a hypothesis at all.All they've done is to fMRI images of nuns' brains while they meditate.

There are 200 pages of, frankly childish, bashing of a scientific school of thought that claims that the mind emerges from the brain. It gets so juvenile that they suggest obliquely that this school of thought is responsible for nazism, the Khmer rouge, and other genocide.

They seem to reject not only that specific scientific school of thought, but the idea that logic apply in the advancement of understanding. They seem to sincerely believe that slagging a particular hypothesis provides of proof for another. They never once actually describe their own thinking on what a soul is, how it arrises, where it comes from, or anything else.

Any six year old with an MRI machine could have done their research.

The one redeeming feature of the book is that the accounts of spiritual experiences are compelling. They describe the subjective nature of these experiences, and how they appear to be universal to humanity. This is quit interesting. If only they had done something more with it. ... Read more
