Product Description
Ancient Greek thought is the essential wellspring fromwhich the intellectual, ethical, and political civilization of theWest draws and to which, even today, we repeatedly return. In morethan sixty essays by an international team of scholars, this volumeexplores the full breadth and reach of Greek thought--investigatingwhat the Greeks knew as well as what they thought about what theyknew, and what they believed, invented, and understood about theconditions and possibilities of knowing. Calling attention to thecharacteristic reflexivity of Greek thought, the analysis in this bookreminds us of what our own reflections owe to theirs.

In sections devoted to philosophy, politics, the pursuit ofknowledge, major thinkers, and schools of thought, this work shows usthe Greeks looking at themselves, establishing the terms forunderstanding life, language, production, and action. The authorsevoke not history, but the stories the Greeks told themselves abouthistory; not their poetry, but their poetics; not their speeches, buttheir rhetoric. Essays that survey political, scientific, andphilosophical ideas, such as those on Utopia and the Critique ofPolitics, Observation and Research, and Ethics; others on specificfields from Astronomy and History to Mathematics and Medicine; newperspectives on major figures, from Anaxagoras to Zeno of Elea;studies of core traditions from the Milesians to the various versionsof Platonism: together these offer a sense of the unquenchable thirstfor knowledge that marked Greek civilization--and that Aristotleconsidered a natural and universal trait of humankind. With thirty-twopages of color illustrations, this work conveys the splendor andvitality of the Greek intellectual adventure. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent !!!
Me as a great lover of Ancient Greek culture & history, I really liked reading this book. When I took it from the shelf in a bookstore in Amsterdam I was with my classmate, when he saw what I had in my hands, the first thing he said was "I guess you just founded your dreambook" And my dreambook it surely was.

On first hand I though that the book would be about the Greek philosophy, but that was a very misplaces thought. In fact the book is so much more wider of scale. It will take everything into the research and tries to explain the Greek thinking not only from of a philopsopcal side (although there is a bog part on that to) but more from of the general idea thoughts. It will tell you what Greek thought about a huge scale of things and topics.

So when you want to get into the mind of an Ancient Greek, and who doesn't !!! (remember that was The reason for Socrates to die, since he was looing forward to meet Hesiod & Homer) Then surely this is your book.

So be a good person and take Machiavelli's advise that a firm knowlegde of our (and then I speak of us Europeans) own Classical inheritage is absolutely crucial in life for true and read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of Classical Greek Thought
Jacques Brunschwig's book is heavy reading. This is not to say that the writing is difficult to read but that the book contains so much information that it is physically heavy. At around 1024 pages, this book is an encyclopedia of essays about almost all aspects of Greek philosophy and history. This book was translated from French and it is great that the essays are now available to the english speaking reader. The book is divied into sections such as The Pursuit of Knowledge, Major Figures, and Currents of Thought. This is useful because since it would be nearly impossible to read the book from cover to cover, it allows the reader to find sections that interest them. I read one essay every night. In a little over a month I had a better understanding of Greek philosophy than ever before. The Currents of Thought section is very interesting because it discusses the various philosophies that appeared throughout Greek history. The book not only contains great essays, but beautiful color photographs and pictures as well. This book is a good introduction to Greek philosophy or a reference on the subject. It is an excellent value for the amount of information it contains. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Slight on mystery, but it's all about the characters
I've always loved and re-read Barbara Paul's very short series of Golden Opera Age cozies. The mysteries are usually slight, and if judged as mysteries, fail miserably. The killer always takes a back seat and is revealed in one of those moments that Lionel Twain derides in "Murder By Death."

Instead, what has always made these books fun is the cast of amateur detectives, the most glittering names on the 1910s Metropolitan Opera roster. Farrar, Caruso, Scotti, Amato, Destinn, and their boss Gatti-Casazza. The characterizations are guaranteed to be way out of whack, but whatever. It's still fun. I'm predisposed to like these books anyway because I've collected the recordings of these artists and they're as well-played on my ipod as anything of more recent years.

While the other two opera books of Paul's are light-hearted and fun, this one had a more somber tone, and throughout I often felt more sad than amused. It's 1920, and Amato's voice isn't what it once was (his 1921 recordings attest to that). Farrar has the young and sexy specter of Maria Jeritza looming over her shoulder for the next season. Caruso has to share roles with new arrival Beniamino Gigli while suffering ill health. He hemorrhages blood during a performance of L'Elisir d'Amore and his condition a topic of conversation among the others throughout the book. Destinn is changed by her wartime house arrest on her Czech estate, bitter and apathetic. The gay and frivolous pre-war theater world is gone forever, and a scene between Farrar and David Belasco emphasizes the theme of this book, which is about final curtains and graceful retirements after years of fierce dedication and stardom.

So the peppy, fun reads of Prima Donna At Large and A Cadenza For Caruso don't apply to this last installment, but if one has an affection for the era and its celebrities, then this book doesn't disappoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Barbara Paul winner
An ailing Caruso, with the aid of several other stars of the Metropolitan Opera House, tries to track down a killer who has a nasty habit of doing away with the chorus members.

Anyone who enjoys a neat murder plot, set against a carefully researched background, will find this book well worth reading.

Ms Paul has crafted another interesting mystery, and more: she has brought her historical characters back to vivid life. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Gossip and Nothing More!
I have been a fan of the Mandrells for many years, and have followed their personal and professional lives for quite some time.Having met all of the Mandrells on several occasions, I know that most of the information contained in this book is false. The author apparently didn't get his information from credible sources.Although some of the info is true, the majority of it reads like he ripped it from the headlines of grocery store tabloids. The Mandrells are a strong family, who has certainly seen their share of heartache with failed marriages and Barbara's accident, but they remain true to their roots and supportive of each other. This book tries to stir up pain regarding the family, and is not worth the money to burn it.

1-0 out of 5 stars False and unjustified material based upon rumors and heresay
Knowing the Mandrells personally makes this book seem like a compilation of tabloid rumors. This book is filled with false and unjustifed rumors and heresay based upon reporters' opinions and great lies, claiming them to be true. The book does not do justice to Barbara Mandrell or her family ... 4-0 out of 5 stars odd characters give the book a decent grade
'You Have the Right To Remain Silent' is a quadruple ritualistic murder mystery featuring NYPD Detective Sergeant Marian Larch. She's fed up with all of the politics in police work and on the verge of quitting throughout the book. The characters are original and show some depth. The mystery itself is unique, including a motive that I still think is a little off, but...most murderers are a little off as well. I give this book a "B-"

WAR WORLD

Lodon-Kamaria, a planet in a perpetual state of war.No one in the Federation of United Worlds knew what the Londonites and Kamarians were fighting about, nor, in the normal course of events, would anyone have cared. But this was a world rich in alphidium, the most precious substance in the galaxy - and so, Lodon-Kamaria would have to become a member of the Federation. And it was up to the Diplomatic Corps team, nicknamed the Anglo-Saxon Invaders, to do the recruiting.

It should have been an easy assignment.Either make peace between the Lodonites and Kamarians, or figure out which side would be easier to deal with and see that it won the war. That would have been the reasonable, rational approach. But on a world where everyone is insane, reason just doesn't apply...!
