4-0 out of 5 stars Really humourous book
Nightmare Abbey is absolutely wonderful for the most part. Love Peacock has a very witty and slightly subversive take on the concept of Romanticism. His attacks on the melancholy aspects of the period areespecially amusing, the owner of Nightmare Abbey who only employs servantswith depressing looks, and even more depressing names is brilliantlywritten. The only downside to the novel is the dialogue which I found quitedifficult in comparison to the main narrative, but it was definately worththe effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most humorous books ever
This is easily one of the funniest books I have ever read. Two separate novels from one of the premier wits and classical scholars of the last century, both dealing with contemporary figures, mildly disguised, andcontemporary issues.

If you find Gothic novels far too over the top, ordelight in parody of the likes of Byron, Coleridge, and Shelley, you'lllove this book, which includes touching descriptions of British landscapealong with its heavy dose of good-natured mockery.

The introduction andfootnotes are gems as well.If only the complete run of Peacock novelswere in print in this fashion.

A must for anyone interested inRomanticism, British history, and good fun! ... Read more

Book Description
Thomas Love Peacock (1785-1866) was an English satirist and author. Peacock was a close friend of Percy Bysshe Shelley and they influenced each other's work. He wrote satirical novels, each with the same basic setting - characters at a table discussing and criticizing the philosophical opinions of the day. He worked for the British East India Company. His own place in literature is pre-eminently that of a satirist. That he has nevertheless been the favourite only of the few is owing partly to the highly intellectual quality of his work, but mainly to his lack of ordinary qualifications of the novelist, all pretension to which he entirely disclaims. He has no plot, little human interest, and no consistent delineation of character. His personages are mere puppets, or, at best, incarnations of abstract qualities such as grace or beauty. His comedy is Aristophanic. He suffers from that dramatist's faults and, though not as daring in invention, shares many of his strengths. His works include Headlong Hall (1815), Nightmare Abbey (1818), Maid Marian (1822), The Misfortunes of Elphin (1829), Crotchet Castle (1831), and Gryll Grange (1861).Download Description
The baron was inflexible in his resolution not to let Matilda leave the castle. The letter, which announced to her the approaching fate of young Gamwell, filled her with grief, and increased the irksomeness of a privation which already preyed sufficiently on her spirits, and began to undermine her health. She had no longer the consolation of the society of her old friend Father Michael. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Read
This version of Robin Hood goes along pretty well with most of the traditional Robin Hood stories. One difference is that Robin, the Earl of Locksley and Huntington, actually squandered away his fortune and poached the King's deer for love of the hunt rather than out of necessity. His lands were then confiscated by King Henry and he was named outlaw for resisting arrest.
For those who like strong women characters, this Maid Marian (who's real name is Matilda) can use a sword, quarter-staff, and shoot a bow as well as Robin. She also loves to hunt and likes being out in Nature.
The only complaint I have is that some of the characters, Friar Tuck for instance, tend to be rather long winded.Other than that I enjoyed the book and recommend it to anyone interested in Robin Hood. ... Read more

Book Description
1910. English poet and satirist, friend and biographer of Percy Bysshe Shelley, Peacock is best remembered as one of the great satirists of the Romantic period. Early in his writing career he made use of the Arthurian legends, mainly for satire, amusement, and instruction. This volume contains letters that Peacock wrote either to intellectual bookseller Thomas Hookham who introduced him to Shelley, or to Shelley himself. ... Read more

Book Description
Mr. Glowry was a very consolate widower, with one small child. That child -- a son -- was named Scythrop, after a maternal ancestor who had hanged himself one rainy day in a fit of tedium. The coroner's jury eulogized him with the comprehensive phrase of felo de se -- on which account Mr. Glowry held his memory in high honor, and made a punchbowl of his skull.(Jacketless library hardcover.)Download Description
Nightmare Abbey, a venerable family-mansion, in a highly picturesque state of semi-dilapidation, pleasantly situated on a strip of dry land between the sea and the fens, at the verge of the county of Lincoln, had the honour to be the seat of Christopher Glowry, Esquire. This gentleman was naturally of an atrabilarious temperament, and much troubled with those phantoms of indigestion which are commonly called blue devils. ... Read more
