5-0 out of 5 stars To read the past and make new literatureof it
Petrarch is a central figure in the story of Western Culture. His turning to ancient literature, his scholarship, textual analysis and literary works were a stepping stone to the Renaissance. His own literary projects vast and ambitious were perhaps less important than the interest he created in both the revival of ancient learning, and the turning to Nature as source for literary inspiration. His vast literary projects in which he intended to contend and in some way outdo his great masters, Cicero , Vergil and on the Christian side Augustine fell by and large flat. What remains of his that is somewhat read today is the Sonnets . In the biography Mann shows how for Petrarch the writing of them too was as much and even more a project of his literary ambition than of his life- love. Petrarch is a great scholar whose vast worlds of interests, and tremendously energetic mind inspired the generations who came after. This excellent study is a very good introduction to his life and work. ... Read more

Product Description
2006 REPRINT. Hardbound. Octavo. English Book. 547 p. front., facsim. London, New York, Oxford University Press, 1916. Petrarch is traditionally called the father of the Renaissance. He inspired humanist philosophy, which led to the intellectual flowering of the Renaissance. He believed in the immense moral and practical value of the study of ancient history and literature - that is, the study of human thought and action. While humanism later became associated with secularism, Petrarch was a devout Christian and did not see a conflict between realizing humanity's potential and having religious faith. A highly introspective man, he shaped the nascent humanist movement a great deal because many of the internal conflicts and musings expressed in his writings were seized upon by Renaissance humanist philosophers and argued continually for the next two hundred years Fiske's huge Petrarch Collection came as a bequethal to the Cornell University Library in 1905. He had started assembling it in Europe in 1881. The printed catalogue contains circa 5000 works, and cites size, pagination, devices and frequent annotations. A revised and expanded version was published in 1974 but it omits many of the longer notes (merely giving cross references to these); accordingly this earlier edition remains valuable. ... Product Description
This volume addresses one of the most far-reaching aspects of Petrarch research and interpretation: the essential interplay between Petrarch's texts and their material preparation and reception. The essays look at various facets of the interaction between Petrarchan philology and hermeneutics, working from the premise that in Petrarch's work philological issues are so authorially driven that we cannot in fact read or interpret him without understanding the relevant philological issues and reapplying them in our critical approach to his works. To read and interpret Petrarch, we must come to grips with the fundamentals of Petrarchan philology. This volume aims to show how a Petrarchan hermeneutics must be based on an understanding of Petrarchan philology. ... Read more
