5-0 out of 5 stars Three works of Jewish interest
These works were originally published as part of a cooperative effort between the Jewish content book- centered website 'Nextbook' and Schocken books. The whole series is edited by Jonathan Rosen.
Goldstein rereads the story of Spinoza and perhaps makes him more Jewish in his thought than he truly was. Pinsky retells the story of Biblical David in aless worshipful way than many religious Jews would approve of. Nuland looks at the Rambam's legacy as a doctor and stacks it up against modern medical knowledge. I would not say any of the works is a masterwork, but all three are highly interesting and worthwhile reads. ... Read more

Product Description
The Turnpike. The Parkway. The Shore. Malls. Mobsters. Bad accents. No other state in America elicits reaction quite like New Jersey. Though the Garden State has risen to the top of pop culture consciousness, its significant and diverse literary culture has gone sorely under the radar--until now.

What's Your Exit? A Literary Detour through New Jersey is a collection of contemporary fiction, poetry, and essay inspired by a place that piques the curiosity of all who have set foot in it...and those who haven't. Themes of family, friendship, sex, love, fear, nostalgia and longing populate this anthology, which features forty-nine writers whose visions of the Jersey landscape are as eclectic and beautiful, and as unnerving and mysterious and bold as the place that unites them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars an artfully curated representation of NJ's long-standing literary tradtion.
In this post-Sopranos age where New Jersey is most often seen through the lens of reality tv shows littered with big hair, acrylic nails and orange tans, this anthology is a much needed reminder that the "armpit of America" has long been an epicenter of literary activity, from Walt Whitman to the beat poets to to current greats like Joyce Carol Oates, Robert Pinsky and Tom Perotta. Editors Joe Vallese and Alica Beale, both talented emerging writers and New Jersey natives, have put together a superb collection of work by established and new writers, organized by theme, genre and, of course, exits off the turnpike and the parkway. Anyone who has ever lived, visited, or driven through New Jersey (the rest of the state doesn't smell like the turnpike, we swear!) should pick up a copy of this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Catrina2005!
Purchased a book from Catrina2005 not for the price but because the proceeds were going towards a worthy cause.

Thanks so much!

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect companion for a post-breakup pity party
This little treasure can lead you through the gamut of emotions.I keep it on my nightstand, crawling into it when I'm feeling unloved and alone. There's something about the physical bookitself -- small, thin, with the poems printed on beautiful deckle-edged paper in an elegant font -- that invites you to pick it up, hold it.The poetry within is mournful, painful, emotional -- a fine accompaniment for a bout of miserable introspection.A wide variety of poets are represented -- from Ben Johnson to Robert Frost, Shakespeare to Sylvia Plath. My personal favorite poem in the collection:Elizabeth Bishop's villanelle that begins "The art of losing isn't hard to master;/ so many things seem filled with the intent/ to be lost that their loss is no disaster. . . ."Despite this, the collection includes a number of very eloquent descriptions of the desperation of losing a love and the disaster of lost love. This is one of my favorite (and most frequently-read) collections of poetry.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Collection
The Handbook of Heartbreak has a wonderful collection of poems. Some very touching and personal ones. I related very well to some of the poetry included in this collection- a very nice piece to read over some free time, but I think it would have been even more wonderful if it had a few morepieces of poetry in it. ...
