Product Description
This biography has two primary aims: the first, to bring Pope the man clearly to view, the second, to show how it was that Pope succeeded so triumphantly as a poet in his own lifetime, becoming celebrated throughout the Western world. Central to this investigation is the relationship between the creative genius and society. One researcher of this topic is Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi, who has formulated a theory, the "Systems Perspective", which attempts to explain how a creative work comes to be recognized. Beginning with the question "where is creativity"? (as opposed to "what is creativity"?), he explains that recognition is all because without it the public does not know the work exists. Looking at Pope in the light of this and what other psychologists have to say about creativity should enable the reader to see him as one of a family, along with Darwin, Freud, Stravinsky, and TS Eliot. ... Product Description

Written in 1727, this satirical volume was one of Alexander Pope’s contributions to the literary output of the legendary Scriblerus club, a circle of writers dedicated to mocking what they perceived as a culture of mediocrity and false learning prevalent in the arts and sciences. Taking the form of an ironic guide to writing bad verse, Pope’s tongue-in-cheek essay is wickedly funny in its lampooning of various pompous poetasters, and is essential reading for any budding writer wishing to avoid sinking to the unintentionally ridiculous and to instead to reach for the sublime. Several lesser-known pieces by other members of the Scriblerus club are also included.

4-0 out of 5 stars Something is screwy here with the price
Pope's Homer is a monument in 18th Century English poetry. Pope simply Latinizes the names and transforms Homer's dactylic hexameters into iambic pentameters. So, compared to Homer, Pope's lines (actually rhymed couplets) race.

But this edition is a Penguine paperback.ONE HUNDRED PLUS DOLLARS!I don't think so.I've seen this puppy in a book store when there was one around here.I think it was 14.95.Yes, there are notes at the end, but they are not worth over one hundred bucks.

So the recomendation is based on the value of the edition to someone interested in Pope's poetry who is studying 18th Century English Literature. You can certainly say Pope is more interesting here than in the "Rape of the Lock."You should certainly be able to find an copy that isn't this expensive.

Also if you are studying Joel Barlow Ambassador to the Barbery states, treaty maker, and derisively called "the poet of corn meal mush," it's time to study Pope along side his works. The Hasty Pudding, and the Columbiad are written by a man who is infused with Pope's poetry. Paned by British critics primarily for trying to out Pope, Pope, their judgement has stood with nary a defense of the American Poet by his countrymen.

If you want to by a Pope for fifty cents (you're interested just in the music of his translation), look for an old book club copy. The type is certainly larger and easier to read in the oversized volume, and there are some fantastic full page line illustrations scattered through it. ... Read more
