Product Description
This work provides a look at Pope's relationship with the leading garden makers of his time. Forever planning and plotting for his own grotto and for his modest five acres in Twickenham, his ideas were also sought at many of the great estates. His importance to Lord Burlington at Chiswick, Henrietta Howard at Marble Hill, and, above all, to William Kent, the great designer is made abundantly clear. The author sets out to throw new light on her subject and show why Pope has been, and remains, so crucial to our landscape. ... Read more

Product Description
Pope's poetry has, for the most part, been taken on its own terms. Seen as a sophisticated commentary on the attitudes and values of Augustan England, it has been praised for its aesthetic complexity and its universal significance.

This book asks us to rethink such a way of understanding Pope. Refusing to accept Pope's version of reality, Laura Brown reads his poems not for what they claim to say, but for what they rationalize away or fail to recognize.

She sets out a new basis for defining the significance of his major works, arguing that they are bound up with the two key issues of the age: the interconnected developments of capitalism and imperialism. A close reading of Pope's poetry from Windsor-Forest to The Dunciad shows it to embody the conflicting impulses of early English mercantile capitalism; it is fascinated with the prizes of expansion, yet half aware of the violence that imperialism unleashes. ... Product Description

Like the miniatures of which Pope was so fond, the book is at once particular in its focus and wide-ranging in its conceptual scope. While drawing on recent feminist, historicist, and materialist criticism of Pope, as well as current theoretical work on the body, it also attends closely to the local ambiguities of the poet's texts and cultural milieu, details often lost to critical view. The result is a revitalized--and broadened--reading of Pope, and of our understanding of the processes of authorship. By focusing on the process by which ideas of authority and authenticity took shape at specific moments in Pope's career, Resemblance and Disgrace calls into question distinctions between theoretical abstractions and material details, between literary originality and critical derivation, following Pope's own example of rewriting intellectual boundaries as creative opportunities.

5-0 out of 5 stars So compassionate and wise!
Well I admit I found Pope very hard when i first had to read some of his verses on my course! And he seemed so hard and cruel and judgmental, not someone you would like as a friend. But this book has opened my eyes and now i can love him like the rest of humanity. This is a very understanding book and helps with the poems very strongly and well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous study of Pope

This book is a learned, compassionate and fascinating study
of how Pope's sense of embodiment makes its way into his
writing and his philosophy of civic "enlightenment."Part of
the 'new wave' of sharp 18th century scholars who appeared
on the scene over the last fifteen years,Deutsch, among others,
has helped to turn the field into a growing intellectual concern.
This book is foundational to anyone working on Augustan literature
and the "age of reason." ... Read more

Product Description
Alexander Pope (1688-1744) is regarded as the greatest English poet of the early eighteenth century, best known for his satirical verse and for his translation of Homer. Pope, who was born in London, was taught to read by his aunt and then sent to two surreptitious Catholic schools. He is the third most frequently quoted writer in the English language, after Shakespeare and Tennyson. Pope was a master of the heroic couplet. From early childhood he suffered numerous health problems, including Pott's disease (a form of tuberculosis affecting the spine) which deformed his body and stunted his growth. The Rape of the Lock is perhaps Pope's most popular poem. It is a mock-heroic epic, written to make fun of a high society quarrel between Arabella Fermor (the "Belinda" of the poem) and Lord Petre, who had snipped a lock of hair from her head without her permission. Among his other works are: An Essay on Criticism (1711), Elegy to the Memory of an Unfortunate Lady (1717), and Essay on Man (1734). ... Read more

Product Description
This is a lively and authoritative guide to the life Pope called 'a warfare upon earth'. Dr Rosslyn gives a sympatheticportrait of the poet who overcame the obscurity of his origins and the embarrassment of his deformity to become the uncrowned laureate of his age - and also make the largest literary fortune since Shakespeare's. She describes the mixture of passion and pragmatism that created poetry out of a legionof enemies (and a wide circle of distinguished friends), and pays tribute to the professionalism of a poet who thought no sacrifice too great for his art. ...
