Product Description
Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch wrote short stories, novels, criticism, and edited anthologies, including the Oxford Book series. He was Assistant Editor of the Liberal weekly The Speaker, and from 1912 until his death was Professor of English at Cambridge University.

Writing under the pen name "Q", Sir Arthur produced a variety of work, including adventure stories, historical fiction, satire, stories of the supernatural, and mysteries.

Dead Man's Rock was Q's first published novel. The genesis came from a curious bit of family lore, in which his great grandfather Richard had a key hanging from a beam, with instructions that no one should take it down till he returned.Richard was lost at sea during a war, and the key was never touched. What might it have unlocked? Hence the inspiration for the story. A family in poverty, great wealth to be unlocked by a key, two parties vying for it, and a curse on the treasure the key could unlock. ... Read more

Product Description
Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch (1863-1944), who often published under the pen-name of 'Q', was one of the giants of early twentieth-century literature and literary criticism. A novelist and poet who was also a Professor of English, he helped to form the literary tastes of generations of literary students and scholars who came after him. The freshness, enthusiasm and intellectual insight of his work is still evident in his writings nearly a century on. Cambridge University Press is delighted to reissue some of his key texts in this new edition. Quiller-Couch was born in Cornwall and educated at Newton Abbot College, Clifton College and Trinity College Oxford. These autobiographical writings, first published shortly after his death in 1944, describe his early years in Polperro and his educational experiences, ending with his choice of an academic career and the publication of his first novel. ... Yes; you shall have the whole tale. The first effect of the news of Harry¿s death in October last was simply to stun me. You may remember how once, years ago when we were children, we rode home together across the old Racecourse after a long day¿s skating, our skates swinging at our saddle-bows; how Harry challenged us to a gallop; and how, midway, the roan mare slipped down neck over crop on the frozen turf and hurled me clean against the face of a stone dyke. ... Product Description
Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch - who published much of hisfiction under the pseudonym 'Q' - was born in Cornwall in 1863, andthe county, its history, and its people were to have a markedinfluence on his life and writing. After moving to London to pursue awriting career, the author returned to his native county in 1892, andmaintained a permanent residence there until his death in 1944.

He established a reputation as a literary critic and editor, and wasalso a successful novelist: his final, unfinished novel, CASTLE D'OR,was completed by another writer with strong Cornish connections,Daphne du Maurier. Yet Quiller-Couch was also interested in the unseenand unknown, and this prompted him to turn his hand, time and again,to supernatural stories, which are scattered amongst his collectionsof short stories.

S.T. Joshi has now collected together the finest of Sir ArthurQuiller-Couch's weird tales. They range from the gently humorousdrolls 'Widdershins' and 'My Grandfather, Hendry Watty' to theoutright horror of 'The Haunted Dragoon' and 'The Legend of SirDinar', and include such classics of the supernatural as 'A Pair ofHands', 'The Seventh Man', and Quiller-Couch's best-known ghost story, the haunting 'The Roll-Call of the Reef'. In his introduction, Joshidiscusses the author's life and times, providing a fascinating look atthis most accomplished and respected writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb criticism of Shakespeare
While modern and technically enhanced criticism of Shakespeare has advanced, it always seemed to me that Arthur Quiller-Couch's criticism of Shakespeare, from an age of literacy that has passed, captures the essence, particularly in his concluding critique of The Tempest as Shakespeare's "majesty of art: we feel that we are greater than we know". ...
