He then told Lady Cicely there were more reasons than he chose to mention: go he must, and would; and he implored her not to let the affair drop. In short, he was sad but resolved, and she found she must go on with it, or break faith with him. She took her desk, and wrote a letter concluding the bargain for him. She stipulated for half the year's fee in advance. She read Dr. Staines the letter. ... Read more

"Nor would it be polite or generous; but this of yours is a deep grief, and alarms me for you. Shall I tell you how I know? You often yawn and often sigh; when these two things come together at your age they are signs of a heavy grief; then it comes out that you have lost your relish for things that once pleased you. The first day I came here you told me your garden had been neglected of late, and you blushed in saying so. ... Read more

" I'll just finish this delicious cup of coffee," thought he, "and then I'll tell you, my lady." "While he was slowly sipping said cup, Lucy looked up and said graciously to him, " How silly Mr. Talboys was last night—was he not, dear?"" Talboys ? silly ? what 1 do you know ? Why, what on earth do you mean?"" Silly is a harsh word—injudicious then—praising me a tort et a travers, and was downright ill bred—was discourteous to another of our guests, Mr. Dodd."" Confound Mr. Dodd! I wish I had never invited him.""So do I. If you remember, I dissuaded you."" I do remember now. What! you don't like him either?"" There you are mistaken, dear. I esteem Mr. Dodd highly, and Miss Dodd too, in spite of her manifest defects ; but in making up parties, however small, we should choose our guests with reference to each other, not merely to ourselves. Now forgive me, it was clear beforehand that Mr. Talboys and the Dodds, especially Miss Dodd, would never coalesce; hence my objection in inviting them; but you overruled me—with a rod of iron, dear.""Yes; but why? because you gave me such a bad reason ; you never said a word about this incongruity."" But it was in my mind all the time.""Then why didn't it come out?""Because—because something else would come out instead. As if one gave one's real reasons for things!! Now,uncle, dear, you allow me great liberties, but would it have been quite the thing for me to lecture you upon the selection of your own convives f" Why, you have ended by do... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars "She was born to be your destruction."

This is a breezy, rather light romance about the dashing, heroic David Dodd and his love for the not very interested Lucy Fountain. Lucy has a few suitors engaged in trying to win her hand ("all my pests" she calls them), but actually would rather be just left alone. But Nature must have her way, and David shows her a love and devotion that not even she can resist for long. Charles Reade always researched his novels as thoroughly as some historians do their subjects, and one of the issues that comes in for Reade's examination here is banking; at one point he gives a 40-page history lesson on some past banking practices in England. Reade's judgment when it came to these discourses was always clouded, and they are best just skipped. Some of the drawing room conversations are quite humorous and delightful, but the novel is at best only a mild "entertainment" (even Reade thought the incidents in the book didn't amount to much, and promised more substance in the sequel he was already writing, HARD CASH). ...
